Imani
Grabbing my purse I got up from my seat and headed towards the door after my Anatomy class was dismissed. I had nothing to do for the rest of the day so I was going home to take a much needed and wanted nap.
“Imani, hold up,” I heard from behind me when I got outside the classroom. I turned around to see this boy Malcolm from my class coming up to me.
Now I would be lying if I said Malcolm wasn’t fine as fuck, he’s actually the best looking guy in my class. He’s a good 6′2. we’re just about the same complexion and you could tell he played sports for most of his life by his build. He looked like a basketball player in my opinion He kept his facial hair minimal and his hair cut low.
“Hey Malcolm, what’s up?”
“I’m going to be honest, I was half asleep in there and don’t know what the fuck he was talking about.” He said making us both laugh. “Can you study with me today so I won’t go home completely fucked up in the head? I mean that’s if it’s cool, I know you got a boyfriend I don’t want to cause problems for you.”
“Well the boyfriend thing isn’t a problem but I live in Jersey City and I don’t wanna be stuck in that rush hour traffic.” I told him. I had to commute an hour every time I had class because the damn school I go to had to be in Piscataway. The drive in itself is annoying, I damn sure wasn’t about to be stuck in traffic.
“I live out there too so we’re good on that.”
“You live in Jersey City?” I asked a little surprised.
“Yeah my mother thinks it would be better for me to live out here but this shit is boring.” He said with a chuckle.
“I know what you mean.”
“Well if it’s cool with you we could just meet up somewhere, grab something to eat then go to my house.” When he suggested his house I raised my eyebrow at him. “No like that, I mean to just study. We can sit right at the kitchen counter if you want to.”
Laughing I put my hand up for him to calm down. “It’s fine Malcolm, if I had a problem with it I would’ve said no. Where do you want to eat at?”
“Well since you’re helping me out by studying with me, you can pick and it’ll be my treat.”
“Are you sure about that? My taste can be a little costly.” I told him being half way serious.
“Yeah I think I can tell,” he said while poking the Chanel tote I was carrying.
“I’ll keep it simple, you like the cheesecake factory?”
“Yeah that’s fine, it’s in Newport right?”
“Right,” We walked outside together and he walked me over to my car. I thought it was because he was being nice but come to find out it was his black Porsche Panamera executive parked next to my car.
“I always wondered whose car this was,” I told him while I went around to the driver’s side of my car.
“Graduation gift from my pops, don’t look so shocked. It’s not like you’re riding in something simple. A person driving what looks to be a brand new Jaguar shouldn’t be so surprised.
I looked at the brand new Jaguar XJ my dad got me as a graduation gift. I still had the Benz he bought me when I graduated high school so I don’t know why he felt the need to buy me a new car but I wasn’t complaining.
“Let’s just say your father wasn’t the only one buying big graduation gifts.” We both got in our cars and pulled off one after the other.
Once we got to the restaurant we ordered our food and drinks while getting to know each other a little bit. Malcolm actually had me impressed with him. He graduated summa cum laude from Rutgers University where he played basketball for two years before getting injured. Just like me he was studying to become a surgeon. His reasoning was because of his family, his grandfather and father both worked at The Valley Hospital in Ridgewood. His father is the head of Neuro while his granddad is the chief of surgery.
I was actually surprised by his background because he didn’t come off like a typical rich boy. The way he carried himself didn’t exactly match how I would think someone with his type of family would act. It’s obvious he was a nice guy but he had this edge to him that told me he wasn’t a punk.
“Have you always wanted to be a surgeon?” I asked him after the waiter sat our food down and walked away.
“Nah, basketball was supposed to be my break but I fucked my knee up sophomore year. Medical school was going to be my backup if I didn’t get drafted but I didn’t even make it to the damn draft.” He answered while shaking his head. “What about you?”
“Well I wanted to be a pediatrician but then I decided to specialize in surgery.”
“What kind?”
“Pediatrics definitely but I’m stuck on choosing Neonatal or Prenatal. Do you know what you’re specializing in?”
“Gynecologic Oncology, I like the idea of helping women.”
“Mhm sure,” I chuckled. “Are you single?”
“Yeah, school takes up a lot of my time and most of the females I meet act like they can’t handle it.” He answered.
“I know what you mean by that.” I shook my head thinking about Kason. Besides the night Darnell got shot I haven’t spoken to him since we broke up. As far as I’m concerned we don’t have shit to talk about, and if he’s still in contact with my so-called sister we really have no reason to talk.
“Why are you single Imani? When we first met I remember you saying you were in a relationship.”
“Well, he decided that school was taking too much of my time and he cheated. He didn’t physically sleep with somebody but spending time around his ex was enough for me to chuck up the deuces.”
“That’s understandable; this medical school shit is no joke. We’re only first year and it’s stressful as fuck, nobody needs the added you don’t spend enough time with me bullshit.”
“Exactly, at least you understand what I mean.” It was refreshing to talk to somebody who understood what the hell I was going through. When my schedule started to change it’s not because I didn’t want to spend time with my man or be around; I’m working towards my career and nobody is about to stand in the way of that.
When we finished our food he volunteered to pay the bill and I let him do just that; it’s not like he can’t afford the shit. As we were leaving the restaurant I heard my name being called so I turned around and saw Heaven walking over to me.
Rolling my eyes I turned back around and kept walking. I don’t know what the hell she was calling my name for, we don’t have a damn thing to say to each other.
“You know that girl?” Malcolm asked. Before I could answer my hand was being grabbed from behind. I turned around with a frown on my face and snatched my hand away.
“I know you heard me call your name,” Heaven said to me folding her arms across her chest.
“I did and I ignored you for a reason.”
“So you can’t talk to me now Imani?”
“We don’t have shit to talk about. Our mother is buried, I don’t fuck with you or the rest of that family and Kason is no longer mine; so we don’t have shit to talk about. Bye,”
She sucked her teeth then looked at Malcolm and smiled. “Mhmm, I see why you’re acting funny. You moved on huh? Does Kay know? He might like to hear about this, I know your ass wasn’t all innocent.”
“Girl if you don’t go somewhere with this bullshit. I don’t give a fuck about what Kason knows, we’re not together so if you want to run along like a dumb bitch and tell him some shit oh well.”
“Oh I definitely will let him know that his precious Imani is a ho just like the rest of these bitches. I see how it is,”
Laughing I shook my head because this girl is a complete idiot. It’s funny because she thinks she’s making me look dumb when she’s really telling on herself. I didn’t know if Kason was still talking to her or fucking with her but I just got my answer; he’s not. If he was she wouldn’t be pressed about telling him anything about me. The fact that she feels the need to go and tell him anything means she’s trying to clear a path for herself so she wants to make sure I’m completely gone.
“How many times do I have to tell you broads that I’m far from stupid?” I questioned while I continued to laugh. “Tell that man whatever you want to it won’t change the fact that he does not want you.”
“What?” She looked at me confused.
“You heard me, if you had him you wouldn’t be thinking about me. Go ahead and run your mouth to him, the most you will get is a fuck or his dick in your mouth because he’ll be pissed at me. He will never be with you, get over it.” I told her then looked at Malcolm. “Let’s go we have some studying to do.” I gave Heaven another smile before Malcolm and I walked off leaving her there looking stupid.
If she’s dumb like I figure her to be she’s going to tell Kason just to be spiteful. Knowing him the way I do, I can expect a pop up from that nigga at some point. If he doesn’t pop up the next time I do see him which will be Christmas since Millz wants to have everybody at she and Trouble’s new house he’s going to say something to me. Either way I’m going to hear about this shit and I’m going to have to hear his damn mouth, I already know it.

Kason
“So what you think?” I asked Trouble as he looked around my space.
After months of hard work, ripping and running I was finally ready to open my barbershop. I came up with the idea back in January and decided I wasn’t going to tell anybody about it until I was done. This was the first thing I could say I did by myself; don’t get me wrong when it comes to the street shit I pull my own weight but I was in that shit because of my cousin and despite anything I knew he would always be there to back me up. I pride myself on being a grown ass man and part of being that is stepping out on your own so that’s what I’m doing. Plus Imani would always be in my ear about cleaning my money and this was the perfect start.
“This is dope, why didn’t you tell me you were doing this shit?”
“I didn’t tell anybody, I wanted to do it by myself.”
“So nobody knows you have this?”
“I mean, your girl knows and that’s only because she hooked me up with a contractor and a designer. Lucky for me her contracts have confidentiality agreements so she couldn’t say shit about it. You know she can’t hold water usually.”
“I know what you mean,” he chuckled. “So Imani doesn’t know about this?”
“Nah, I wanted to surprise her. A lot of the time I was gone I was working on this, all of that shit wasn’t about Heaven.”
“Speaking of her, you deaded that shit right?”
‘Yeah I don’t talk to her anymore,” I told him honestly.
When Imani broke up with me I immediately cut off all contact with Heaven. It took me a minute to realize why what I was doing was fucked up. Now that I do I’m trying to be on the right track. Focusing on my business and giving Imani her space so that when the right time presents its self we can try to make shit work.
“Good; so when do you officially open up?”
“Two weeks, we’re about to start promo heavy. It’s already going to be packed just off the strength of me anyway, plus look where we’re at.”
“Yeah I see, you feel comfortable up here? You know these hill niggas are unpredictable.”
“This is where I’m from, these niggas know me and they know better.” I put my barbershop on the block we grew up on because this where most of the clientele I expect to have lives anyway. Plus a lot of the barbers I hired are from around here. I put my ear out and found out who was the best at this barber shit and found some people that were perfect.
“Well I’m proud of you nigga, anything you need you know I got you.”
“Just put the word out, that’s all I need.”
“I got you. What’s next after this?”
“More man, just keep opening up as many as I can handle. I’m working on a laundromat too, it’s two blocks away. That shit will be opened in two months.”
“Word? That’s what’s up, you on your shit.”
“Thanks man, I’m trying to be like you one day.”
“What you mean?”
“Nigga you’re set for life, I mean I know I’m good but not like you are.”
“That’s investments man, just buy the right stocks and you’re good to go.”
“I hear you, I’ll look into it.” I said just as my phone was ringing. Pulling it out my pocket I sucked my teeth when I saw it was Heaven calling me. I haven’t talked to her in weeks so I don’t know why she was calling me now.
“What?” I asked harshly when I answered.
“Damn, excuse me nigga do you have an attitude.” She snapped at me.
“What you want man? I told you not to call me.”
“You know what Kason fuck you, I called you to let you know your bitch was moving on and had a new nigga and you coming at my neck!”
“Wait what the fuck you talking about?” I didn’t hear shit past new nigga.
“Oh that got your attention right? You get on my damn nerves,”
“I don’t give a fuck, what are you talking about? Who got a new nigga?”
“Your precious little boo Imani, I saw her all over that nigga in the mall and when I approached her about how she had you looking she said fuck you. You’re nothing special you’re only what her family made you.”
“The fuck?” I was pissed off; I know she was mad but she was kicking my back in like that?
“Yup, but you wanna cut me off for that bit-“ I hung up the phone then punched the wall putting a fucking whole in it.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?”
“I gotta go,”
“What happened? Who called you?”
“It doesn’t even matter I just need to get the fuck outta here before I destroy my own shit and gotta pay for it.”
“Aight come on but calm your ass down, face red as shit.” We left the shop and I locked it up while Trouble went his own way. I hopped in my car and sped all way down to Imani’s apartment building.
When I got to her building I went inside and went straight to the elevators not even bothering to stop at the front desk. I didn’t give a fuck either; they can call security if they want to. Shit, they might need it with how I’m feeling.
As soon as I got to her door I was banging on that shit like I was the police. If the front desk didn’t call security, one of these nosey ass neighbors damn sure was going to.
“Hold on!” I heard her yelling. Once the door opened a little bit I forced my way inside then slammed the door so hard it made two pictures on the wall drop. “What the fuck is wrong with you?!” She shouted at me.
“SO YOU ALL OVER NIGGAS AT THE MALL AND SHIT! YOU GOT A NEW NIGGA OR SOMETHING!” I barked at her.
“You need to calm the fuck down; you’re doing way too much right now!”
“Nah I’m not doing enough! I dropped that bitch! I haven’t talked to her, I haven’t been fucking with anybody sense you put my ass out but you got niggas hanging all over you! THEN YOU KICKING MY FUCKIN BACK IN!”
“WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?” She shouted back.
“Why the fuck am I hearing about you all hugged up on somebody at the muthafuckin’ mall?”
“Oh my God,” She threw her hands up in the air then fall back down at her side. “So that bitch went back and told you she saw me huh?” She chuckled. “I knew you were going to do this. What do you want me to say Kason? I wasn’t hugged on anybody so she lied to you.”
“Who were you with?”
“Why does that matter?”
“Because I said it do, who the fuck was it? Don’t play with me; you know how the fuck I give it up. If I gotta find the fuck out on my own then I will and you don’t want that shit.”
“Somebody from my class, we got something to eat then we- hold the fuck up, why am I explaining myself to you. We’re not together so whatever I do is not your business. I should slap you for coming in here for coming at me over what that bitch said when she’s one of the reasons we’re not together in the first place. So y’all still talking? You still besties with that bum?”
“No, I don’t talk that bitch and I haven’t since we broke up. She called me when I was with my cousin, I answered to see what the fuck she wanted and she told me she saw you. Now who the fuck were you with!” I shouted stepping into her face.
“None of your fuckin business that’s who.”
Grabbing her neck I slammed her against the wall. “Imani,” I stared her in the eyes. “If you think you’re about to move on with the next nigga and ride off into the fuckin’ sunset you got me fucked up. You’re mind, I told you that shit a long time ago and I’m not letting the next nigga get you.” I let her go then walked to the bedroom snatching up her phone.
Knowing she didn’t have a lock on it I went to her messages and the first thing I saw was a nigga named Malcolm. The message was from him talking about how much he appreciated her helping him study and she should let him take her out again.
I took one look at his number and memorized it. She came walking in the room just as I was dropping the phone on the bed.
“You gotta go, they called security and I’m not about to get put out behind your dumb ass.”
“They at the door?”
“Yes and what the hell were you doing with my phone?”
“Nothing,” I walked out the room and she was behind. It was a nigga dressed in a black suit standing at the door.
“Sir we need you to leave the premises we’ve been having noise complaints.” He said looking at me.
“Whatever man,” I looked at Imani was shaking her head. “I’ll see you later,”
“No you won’t,”
“Yeah aight,” I walked out her apartment chuckling. If she thought she wasn’t about to see me she had shit fucked up; ole boy was too.
“Good lookin’, this shit is dope.” I told my cousin while I admired the Rolex watch he got me. He actually got all of us a Rolex, something about the shit is simple and he didn’t have to do much thinking.
“It’s nothing you’re welcome.” He said before taking his shot on his pool table.
“How the fuck did she get all of this shit set up within a week?” Haze asked. I was wondering the same thing. Usually it takes people a couple of months to really get settled. Millz had their house set up like they’ve been here for a minute.
“Her company works with some moving company and you know she has hell decorators working for her. What she couldn’t do they did, she was at this bitch all day every day for the last few days.” Trouble answered. “When she says she’s going to do some shit she gets it done.”
“This room included? I’m surprised she let your ass have a man cave, I halfway expected her to turn into her closet.” Vick said. The basement was this niggas own personal man cave equipped with a fully stocked bar, big ass flat screen, pool table and some more shit.
“We made a deal that she would get the bigger closet if I got my own room. This shit is dope but it’s nothing compared to how my shit is going to be in the house I’m building.”
“She still doesn’t know?” I asked him. He’s been talking about this big ass mansion he’s supposed to be building for Millz but he wasn’t telling her about it yet.
“Nah I’m waiting until that shit done and full furnished. Then I can give her this shit,” He pulled a ring box out of his pocket and opened it.
“Goddamn,” Haze shouted as he snatched the box to get a closer look.
“Nigga give me that shit back,” Trouble snatched it back. “You think she’ll like it?”
“Hell yeah, and the way you keep describing that house she’s going to love that shit too. You know she’s spoiled as fuck,” Vick laughed “It doesn’t even matter if the shit is expensive she’s happy as shit either way.”
“You’re right; I didn’t know how she was going to react about that truck. You know she’s used to pushing a Benz or something like that. She flipped about that shit, she was excited as hell.” For Christmas Trouble didn’t just spoil their kids, Karma included since Millz had her living with them; he bought Millz a brand new 2017 Infiniti QX80. That bad boy had a bad ass custom black and purple paint job with the matching inerior.
“It aint a Benz but it’s still a $60,000 truck; besides she aint stuck up like that. She’ll appreciate the small shit besides she knew you got her that because of the kids. It aint like she only got two or only one y’all need the room. When G-Wagons come with more than 4 seats then you can upgrade.” Vick said.
“True, she was more concerned about the boys anyway.”
“Is Dyce good he been off all day,” I asked. I noticed Dyce wasn’t acting like his normal self. He was always more reserved and quiet than Darius but he was really distant today.
“His father aint here,” Trouble said and I nodded my head understanding. “It’s crazy how he understands that shit right now.”
“That little nigga is going to be a genius mark my words.” Vick added in. I was about to take my shot in the game when Imani came storming down the stairs and over to me.
“WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU DO THAT TO HIM!” She shouted in my face then pushed me.
“I don’t know what you talking about.” I told her, straight up lying. I knew exactly what she was talking about. I had the number traced and found out quite a few things about that nigga Malcolm. That information led me to finding him and we had a little chat.
“Don’t play with me, you broke his fuckin’ nose and dislocated his jaw Kason. What the fuck is wrong with you?”
“Listen, I don’t know what you’re talking about Imani.” I said again and her hand went across my face so fast it shocked me.
“What the fuck,” I grabbed her throat and Trouble stepped in the middle of us. Haze grabbed her but she was trying to fight against him as if she was ready to box my ass.
“You are a fuckin’ psycho! Why would you do that to him? We’re broken up you can’t fight everybody that comes near me!”
“I don’t give a fuck about what you’re saying right now I’m more stuck on you slapping me. You know we don’t get down like that, I might grab you up but I aint never slapped or hit you!” I threw the pool stick I had in my hand across the room.
I was pissed off; I watched my mother get beat on and in turn let her punk ass nigga beat on me too. Imani knows I don’t play that hitting shit, I don’t put my hands on her I would never. Not because of her family, not because of anything besides the fact that I respect her ass too much to put her through the same shit I watched my mother go through.
“Relax man, chill!” Trouble shouted at me.
“Man fuck her!”
“Fuck me? Nigga fuck you, you’re wrong. You had no reason to do that to him! Over what Kason? Because I went and ate with him it’s not that deep!”
“Nah but him calling you a bitch that’s not worth the drama is!” I argued back and just like I knew she would she felt stupid. “I approached the nigga about staying away from you, and he got slick at the mouth about you so I rocked his shit. Know what the fuck you going off for before you start running your mouth.” I pushed past Trouble then went upstairs so I could get my shit and leave. I had to leave, if I didn’t  I was going to end up putting my hands on that girl and I didn’t want that.
“What’s wrong with you?” Millz asked when she saw me getting my coat from the closet in the hallway.
“Nothing, I’m out thanks for the food, I’ll see y’all alter.” I gave her a quick hug then left the house.
“Kason!” I heard Imani calling my name just as I got to my car. I turned around to see her coming over to me. “Listen, I’m sorry alright. It’s just when he face timed me and told me what you did then I saw his face it pissed me off. That’s no excuse though but I just wanted you to know that I am sorry.”
“It’s whatever Imani,”
“No it’s not, I shouldn’t have hit you. That was doing too much, especially knowing what you went through. I was wrong alright.”
“Cool,”
“That’s all you’re going to say?”
“What else do you want me to say? You just came at my neck over the next nigga; I don’t care what he did. I might be a little off but I’m not out of control and you know it so if the nigga got rocked it was his fault.”
“You’re right and I’m sorry okay.” She said before turning to walk away.
“How long are we going to do this shit?” I asked making her stop in her tracks. “I’m tired of this shit man.”
“Tired of what?” She asked after turning towards me.
“This bullshit between us; I know I did some fucked up shit but I never touched her all we did was chill. She was just familiar aight, that doesn’t excuse but I’m sorry for hurting you. I’m sorry for sneaking behind your back; I’m sorry for all that shit.”
“I accept your apology. Kason I don’t want to do this anymore either but you gotta understand that school comes first. I’m going to be gone a lot of days, I’m gonna have long nights. I’m choosing a very time consuming career. If this is going to work you can’t go running to another girl just because I’m busy.”
“I know, I hear you and I won’t.” I grabbed one of her belt hoops pulling her close to me then kissed her on the lips. “I missed you.”
“I missed you too,” she responded before kissing me again. I was a second away from pulling her ass in this truck when a car sped up the street then stopped in front of the house so hard the tires screeched. Imani and I looked over confused until we saw Nicki get out of her car with that girl Raven along with her.
“What the hell are they doing here?” Imani asked rhetorically. When they started going up the front steps of the house I sucked my teeth. I knew exactly why she was here; Trouble still had Malachi. Now I’m not opposed to her wanting her child but poppin’ up on him and Millz isn’t the way to go about it.
“Aww shit,” I mumbled when Nicki started banging on the door. I already knew some shit was about to pop off. Niggas can’t get through one damn holiday without some nonsense.
