In Cincinnati this summer I was able to see Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration. This is artist Mark Loughney’s series of graphite and ink portraits of fellow inmates. “Pyrrhic Defeat” 2014-present. The title is perfect. I had to remind myself of the reference and the definition, as in, “Pyrrhic victory: a victory or goal achieved at too great a cost.” #markloughney

I visited the monumental show at PS 1, Marking Time : Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration, which features works made by people in prisons and work by nonincarcerated artists concerned with state repression, erasure, and imprisonment. Here’s a selection of hundreds of drawings by Mark Loughney.

AT PS1, MARK LOUGHNEY’S PORTRAITS CAPTURE THE SAMENESS THAT PRISON IMPOSES
THE DAILY PIC: Today I post my last Pic from the important “Marking Time” show of prison-themed and prison-made art at PS1. (Although I could keep posting fine works from it for at least the rest of this week, if other shows were not beckoning.) My final image shows just a few of the 20-minute portraits that Mark Loughney has drawn of inmates in the Pennsylvania prison where he is still being held.
The relentless repetition of his documentary task can’t fail to evoke the relentless unfolding of days in a prison. Like all good portraits, Loughney’s individuate their sitters, but the flattening sameness of prison life, meant to turn prisoners into numbers, feels like it wins out in the end.
Laughney’s installation will remind the art world of the repetitive tasks taken on by On Kawara, Tehching Hsieh or even Hanne Darboven.  But they could have made any kind of art, on any subject, anywhere and anytime they wanted. Laughney’s shall we say distinctly more limited options give his repetitions a whole different heft.

Artist Research: Mark Loughney
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before he went to prison, Mark Loughney used water colours and acrylics to create bright, playful portraits of his favourite musicians. After he entered prison, he began to draw what was around him, but instead of depicting the bars and razor wire, he focused on the people.

Five Hundred Faces of Mass Incarceration
Five Hundred Faces of Mass Incarceration
Before he went to prison, Mark Loughney used watercolors and acrylics to create bright, playful portraits of his favorite musicians. His early work features Trey Anastasio and Grace Potter and Snoop Dogg, all smiling and content, deep into their guitars and joints. But then Loughney committed a crime that even now, years later, he can barely explain.
In 2012, when he was thirty-five and…

Friends with Masks
For these drawings, I was inspired by a few artists. I started these drawing as practice for my painting, which depicts myself wearing a mask. However after doing some further research on some artists given to me by Sylvia, I decided to make them into something different.
For these, I was inspired by Joanna Hopkins’ piece “Am error has Occurred”, Don Bachardy and Mark Loughney.

Each of my friends sent photos of themselves wearing masks for me to practice drawing (inspired by Mark Loughney and Don Bachardys tonal portrait drawings). Around these drawings, I have included some images that remind me of the person I have drawn. Most of my friends from home, I haven’t seen since Christmas, some I haven’t seen since last March. In Joanna Hopkins piece “An error has occured” the interactive piece requires human interaction to function. We all need human interaction to function, and without my friends, I would not be able to function. This collection of drawings is probably the first time all my friends have been “together” since last March, but it is important to remember that this will pass eventually. That thought alone has helped probably a lot of people through these lockdowns 😊
(As you can tell, me and my friends are crushing on The Vision atm)
