Not as much work done on HBG this week as I would have liked, but I *have* been figuring out how to make backgrounds with 3D fractals! (Which is a very big deal, because 3D fractals were some of the biggest inspirations for what HBG's backgrounds looked like to begin with.) Here's a few takes on materials for one, as well as one with focus blur.
Still figuring out taking out chunks of a fractal at a time from the fractal software (Mandelbulber) to Blender. Hopefully I can learn to import bigger shots like these:
Did a pretty ambitious 3D fractal render in Mandelbulber while I was out of town over the holidays. It seems like it took 3-4 days to fully render, but I had all the fancy visual effects turned way up, ratracted reflections & transparency, anti-aliasing by monte-carlo supersampling, and a bunch of other stuff. This is honestly more of a materials appearance test than anything else, the fractal itself is just the built in pseudo-kleinian on its default settings, since it creates a bunch of nice-looking spheres.
I am going to call this series of Mandelbulb 3D renders The Painted Caverns of Mars. Art from my story Mars Awaits set on Mars in the years 2078 and later. More to follow.
