Montana is about as far away from New York as someone can really get. And maybe he doesn't get the joke that she buys "Pete" a Castle made of reclaimed stone, but here they are. Two hundred acres of wooded hills a few hours away from a town so small that it really isn't even on a map. There's the lake and the forest under the watchful eyes of the mountains. There's fish in the rivers and the lake, elk and deer and the occasional moose.

There's the gardens and orchards she maintains for medicinal and nutritional value, but's the wild-flowers she wanders through, uncultivated and bright. They make a good life for him, just Frank and Beth and his service dog. One where he can lay the Punisher to rest beside his family.

Beth hopes against hope that it's enough.

It had been a flippant little question, something to distract him from the stitches she was putting in above his eye, which required her to be nestled between his thighs in a vaguely awkward position. First, she hadn't expected him to answer her at all. Just a little snort of his that would normally be followed by a shake of his head and him telling her she's something else. And as if by rote, she wouldn't answer because she already knows that's true. She's something not really alien but not really human either. Second, she wasn't prepared by the honesty or the little niggle of hurt that comes afterwards. She sets the suturing needle and tiny scissors down beside him once she's tied the thread off, and tries to keep her feelings out of her face and from her voice. She doesn't really succeed. "On one hand, Castle, dat's very sweet of you to say. On da oddah..." On the other, would it be so terrible? Is she so repellent that he can't imagine wanting to see her for more than free and question-exempt triage? The answer is what she's known all of her life. She's not the kind of girl you stay for. So... she beats him to the proverbial punch. "What makes you t'ink I'm so easy to pin down?"

In no circumstances could she have heard what she thought she had. It had to be a trick of her brain or her ears, some combination between the two that sets the rise of panic flooding through her system because she doesn't really know how to answer it. And that flash of feeling is painted exquisitely across her features. A touch of hurt if it was a joke. A touch of sorrow for whatever comes next that has her throat rising and falling in a swallow, and then, eventually a smile that doesn't quite reach her eyes and has them closing, has her turning her head down to the counter where she has coffee and pancakes for them. "Yeah..."

And even if this wasn't a joke, he's not just teasing her, she can think only of the hundreds of reasons why he should be. She picks up her cup to take a sip. Her hands are shaking. And when she speaks? Her voice is just barely above a whisper. She's fighting to speak as plain English as she can, a thing that is never easy for her. "I think it's... a good name. Strong one. When ya say it out loud, you can imagine something straight out of a fairy tale, something really beautiful. And it can be. But really, it's this big and rambling thing, meant to protect the people from terrible things. And it suits you, Frank. Because you're all these things. To the point I worry about you more than maybe anyone else I know. Because you don't back down, no matter how bleak things are. And it has nothing to do with you being a marine, it's just the man you are, the one you've made of yourself." There's a little pause and she chokes up a little. "But if...if you're asking what I think you are...You... you don't wanna do that to yourself. You're a man of your word, and I think your honour and integrity are two of my favourite things about you. If you married me, you'd mean it. But that also means that eventually...when you realised you'd made a mistake, that you were lonely and you were hurt, you'd be...stuck with me." She shakes her head and blinks the wet from her lashes. "I'm not the kind of girl people stay for. I'm a mistake and maybe an aberration. You know the things I can do, that I am capable of. Could you really see yourself living with that? They want people like me to be on government lists, or better yet, locked away where we can't hurt anyone. What if you wanted to have more children? I-I can't give them to you. And I...I want you to be happy. You deserve some peace and quiet in your life, with someone you love and who can make you feel glad to be there, that makes you feel like you're living your best life. And I don't know if I'm that person." She can't help herself, and she doesn't know why she can't seem to keep herself from talking. Or maybe she just needs him to say something, to stop the spinning gears in her head. "I don' know if I will ever be good enough to be Elizabeth Castle. But what I do know is if something happened to you because of me? I couldn't live with myself."
