MLB roundup: Astros hit 5 homers, Verlander wins No. 200

Martin Maldonado finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle, and the visiting Houston Astros slugged five home runs to salvage the finale of their showdown series with the Oakland Athletics with a 9-4 victory on Sunday.

The Astros moved back ahead of Oakland by one game in the American League West after the Athletics pulled even by claiming the opening two games of the three-game weekend set.

Houston rallied from an early two-run deficit with a four-run third inning. After Oakland pulled even in the bottom of the third, the Astros moved back on top in the fourth. Yuli Gurriel, Evan Gattis, Maldonado, Alex Bregman and Marwin Gonzalez went deep for Houston.

Justin Verlander (12-8) was the beneficiary of the power surge, recording his 200th career victory. Verlander allowed three home runs, two to Khris Davis, and gave up four runs in 5 1/3 innings, but the run support he received was ample.

Mets 8, Phillies 2

Amed Rosario had three RBIs, including a two-run single that capped a four-run second inning and catapulted the New York to a win over Philadelphia in the Little League Classic at Williamsport, Pa.

Winning the annual game at the site of the Little League World Series gave the Mets a series win in an unusual five-game set between the teams, who played the first four games at Philadelphia. The Mets have won eight of 12. The Phillies have lost six of 10.

Jason Vargas (3-8) gave up two runs in 5 1/3 innings for the win.

Dodgers 12, Mariners 1

Clayton Kershaw pitched seven strong innings to earn the 150th win of his career as visiting Los Angeles defeated Seattle.

Enrique Hernandez and Justin Turner hit home runs for the resurgent Dodgers, who took two of three games in the interleague series.

Kershaw (6-5), the three-time National League Cy Young Award winner who has struggled with injuries this season, allowed one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out seven.

Pirates 2, Cubs 1 (11 innings)

Adam Frazier hit a two-out, walk-off homer in the 11th inning to give Pittsburgh a split of its four-game series against visiting Chicago.

Frazier’s third career walk-off hit and fifth homer of this season came against Cubs reliever Brandon Kintzler (1-3).

In each game of the series, the Cubs scored one run — on solo homers by Ian Happ, Ben Zobrist and Kyle Schwarber, who got his second of the series Sunday. They won the first two games 1-0 before dropping the last two by scores of 3-1 and 2-1.

Indians 8, Orioles 0

Melky Cabrera hit a grand slam during a six-run fourth inning that broke the game open for Cleveland against visiting Baltimore.

The Indians won two of three in the series and finished the season with a 5-2 record versus the slumping Orioles, who fell back to 50 games under .500 at 37-87.

Cleveland starter Mike Clevinger (9-7) continued to be a riddle that the Baltimore offense couldn’t solve. He threw six shutout innings, extending his streak of scoreless frames against the Orioles to 24, dating back to 2017.

Diamondbacks 4, Padres 3

A.J. Pollock homered with one out in the top of the ninth as Arizona rallied to defeat host San Diego and take three of four games in the series.

Daniel Descalso had tied the game at 3 with his career-best, 11th homer of the season in the top of the eighth inning against Padres rookie reliever Trey Wingenter. Descalso’s drive to right just cleared the leap of Padres right fielder Travis Jankowski.

The win kept the Diamondbacks a half-game ahead of the Colorado Rockies in the National League West. Arizona completed a nine-game road trip with a 5-4 record.

Rangers 4, Angels 2

Rougned Odor had four RBIs, including a three-run home run through a driving rain shower in the seventh inning, to rally Texas over visiting Los Angeles.

Matt Moore (3-6) pitched an inning of scoreless relief to pick up the victory in a game twice delayed by rain. Rangers starter Yovani Gallardo gave up two runs on six hits over six innings with a walk and six strikeouts.

Shin-Soo Choo had three hits for the Rangers, who won three of four games in the series and are 14-8 since July 27.

Brewers 2, Cardinals 1

Jhoulys Chacin went six innings to defeat St. Louis for the first time in eight career decisions as visiting Milwaukee held on for a narrow victory.

Mike Moustakas, whom the Brewers acquired near the trade deadline, hit a two-run double in the third inning to supply the offense, as Milwaukee ended a three-game losing streak.

The Brewers also climbed back over St. Louis for second place in the National League Central standings. It was only the second loss in the Cardinals’ last 12 games.

Yankees 10, Blue Jays 2

Greg Bird capped a six-run first inning with his second career grand slam as New York completed a three-game sweep of visiting Toronto.

The Yankees lost shortstop Didi Gregorius to a bruised left heel that could send him to the disabled list. Gregorius was injured when he collided with Toronto first baseman Kendry Morales after hitting an RBI single in the first inning.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons was ejected for arguing a play at first base. Toronto has lost four in a row and 10 of 14.

Marlins 12, Nationals 1

Jose Urena, pitching while appealing a suspension issued by Major League Baseball, tossed a two-hitter as Miami defeated host Washington.

Urena hit red-hot Atlanta Braves left fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. with the first pitch of Wednesday’s game, drawing a six-game ban from MLB. However, while on appeal, Urena held Washington to a pair of doubles and two walks while pitching the first complete game of his career.

Miami’s Starlin Castro went 5-for-6 with three runs for the first five-hit game of his career. Teammate J.T. Realmuto went 2-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs, and 28-year-old rookie Isaac Galloway went 3-for-5 with a single, double and his first major league homer.

Rays 2, Red Sox 0

Joey Wendle and C.J. Cron hit home runs, and five Tampa Bay pitchers combined for a two-hitter against host Boston.

It was just the fifth time the Red Sox were shut out this season and the first time since being blanked 5-0 at Detroit on July 21. The loss snapped a 13-game win streak in day games for Boston and also was just the second loss in 12 games at Fenway Park for the Red Sox.

Rays rookie Jalen Beeks (2-1) took over with two outs in the second for fellow rookie reliever Diego Castillo, who was making his first career start. Beeks pitched four innings of one-hit shutout relief to pick up the win, walking two and striking out three. Castillo became Tampa Bay’s 16th starting pitcher this season, extending the team’s single-season record.

Rockies 4, Braves 2

DJ LeMahieu homered for the second consecutive game, and visiting Colorado beat Atlanta to complete a four-game series sweep.

The second baseman, who delivered what turned out to be the winning homer in the 10th inning on Saturday, started a decisive two-run rally in the third inning with another solo shot, his 11th, into left-center field. The Rockies tacked on another run on Nolan Arenado’s RBI single for a 3-1 lead.

The win gave Colorado its first four-game sweep in Atlanta and its first four-game sweep over the Braves since 2016 at Coors Field.

Twins 5, Tigers 4

Eddie Rosario blasted a go-ahead solo homer in the eighth, Max Kepler and Jake Cave also homered as host Minnesota edged Detroit.

Rosario drove in two runs for the Twins, who took three of four in the series. Tyler Austin had two hits and scored a run.

Rosario jumped on a high 0-2 fastball from Alex Wilson (1-4) leading off the inning. His 22nd long ball of the year made a winner out of Trevor Hildenberger (3-3), who recorded the last four outs.

Reds 11, Giants 4

Cincinnati completed a winning homestand with a three-game sweep of San Francisco.

Eugenio Suarez and Jose Peraza belted home runs while Billy Hamilton smacked two triples, helping the Reds win the season series 4-2 over the Giants and wrap up a 5-4 homestand.

The Giants, meanwhile, saw their hopes of making a late run at a National League wild-card berth dim a bit with a fourth consecutive loss. San Francisco infielder Chase D’Arnaud made his major league pitching debut in the eighth inning, allowing no runs and one hit.

White Sox 7, Royals 6

Omar Narvaez delivered the tiebreaking single and also hit a solo homer to help Chicago edge visiting Kansas City and take two of three games in the series.

Avisail Garcia belted a three-run homer and Tim Anderson added a two-run blast as the White Sox won for the fourth time in their past five games.

Whit Merrifield hit a three-run shot, Ryan O’Hearn smacked a two-run blast and Alex Gordon hit a solo homer for the Royals. Jorge Bonifacio went 3-for-4 but Salvador Perez struck out in all five at-bats — the last time to end the game.

Javon Patterson Is Ole Miss Nominee For Allstate AFCA Good Works Team

Ole Miss junior offensive lineman Javon Patterson is among the nominees for the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, announced Monday by the American Football Coaches Association.

Since 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® has brought together a select group of college football players from across the country to honor their dedication to volunteerism and enriching the lives of others.

A native of Petal, Mississippi, Patterson has been heavily involved in the Oxford community since arriving to Ole Miss in spring 2015. He has mentored children with the Marks Project and Reading with the Rebels programs, has helped local families with meals at holiday time, visited patients in hospitals, assisted with flood relief in Baton Rouge and South Carolina, volunteered with a blood drive and a “Caps for Kids” program. He is also a member of the NCAA Division I Football Recruiting Ad Hoc Working Group.

On the field, Patterson has been a valuable starter in the interior of the offensive line during his first two seasons in the Red and Blue. He was the only Rebel lineman to start every game last season (nine at left guard, three at center), while helping the Rebels lead the SEC in passing yards and achieve big wins over No. 11 Georgia and No. 8 Texas A&M. As a true freshman in 2015, his efforts contributed to the Rebels shattering most of the single-season offensive records and making the school’s first Sugar Bowl appearance (and win) since 1970.

“After looking at the bios of the 146 nominees we received for 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, it really shows that there are great football student-athletes all over this country who just don’t care what happens between the sidelines, but they also care about their community and giving back to others,” Todd Berry, AFCA Executive Director said. “The AFCA has been proud to partner with Allstate these past 10 years to honor football players who give more of themselves to help others in need.

Comprised of 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA, the final roster of 22 award recipients will be unveiled in September. From the nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® members and prominent college football media members will select the 2017 Good Works Team®. Two-time national champion, Heisman Trophy winner and 2009 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® member Tim Tebow will headline the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® voting panel.

“As a former Good Works Team member, I’m proud to join Allstate for the second year in a row to recognize student-athletes who share my passion for making a difference,” says Tebow. “This award shines a light on the good works players are doing off the field and in the community, and the lives that they’re changing.”

In addition to Tebow and Clarkson, the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® selection panel members includes: former Good Works Team® members Zaid Abdul-Aleem (Duke, 1994 team), Matt Stinchcomb (Georgia, 1997, 1998 teams), Brian Brenberg (St. Thomas, 2001 team), Mike Proman (Amherst, 2002 team) and Wes Counts (Middle Tennessee State, 1999 team); media members Kirk Herbstreit (ESPN), Blair Kerkhoff (Kansas City Star) and Paul Myerberg (USA TODAY); current AFCA President and University of Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez; 2001 AFCA President and current athletic director at Virginia Union University Joe Taylor.

Ole Miss Baseball #ProRebs Update

Ole Miss Baseball has a history of student-athletes playing professionally following their careers as Rebels. Currently, nine former Rebels are on Major League Baseball rosters, while 25 others are working their way up through the minor leagues. Throughout the summer, OleMissSports.com will update Rebel fans about the current #ProRebs making their mark on professional baseball diamonds across the country.

With Major League Baseball on its All-Star Break, 2007 second round draft pick Zack Cozart will start for the National League in Tuesdaynight’s (July 11) MLB All-Star Game at 7 p.m. CT on FOX.

Major League Baseball Rebels

#30 Anthony Alford | CF | Toronto Blue Jays After spending five seasons in the Minors, Anthony Alford was called up by the Toronto Blue Jays on May 19. Four days later, he smacked a double for his first career MLB hit. However, he suffered a broken wrist later in the game and is currently on the disabled list after undergoing surgery. Despite never putting on an Ole Miss baseball uniform, Alford was a defensive back for the Rebel football team. As a sophomore in 2014, he played in the team’s first four games as a backup safety and punt returner before deciding to pursue his professional baseball career. #7 Chris Coghlan | 3B/LF | Toronto Blue Jays Since being called up to Toronto on April 14, the 2006 first round pick has played in 36 games for the Blue Jays totaling 75 at-bats. Coghlan has 15 hits, seven runs scored, one home run, and five RBI for Toronto. He was placed on the 10-day DL on June 16 due to a left wrist contusion.

#2 Zack Cozart | SS | Cincinnati Reds In his sixth season as the Reds’ starting shortstop, Cozart has had his best year yet on many levels. Tuesday night (July 11), he will start the 2017 MLB All-Star Game for the National League, in what is his first All-Star nod. The 2007 second round pick finished the first half of the season second among all shortstops in baseball with a .941 OPS. He hit nine home runs, 18 doubles, six triples, and drove in 35 runs for the Reds totaling a .316 clip in the first half. The Memphis, Tennessee native received more than 1.9 million fan votes to lead all National League shortstops, fending off Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager and the large Los Angeles market. #31 Lance Lynn | RHP | St. Louis Cardinals The St. Louis Cardinals 2008 first round pick, Lynn is in his fifth season as a member of the rotation. In 18 starts in the first half of the 2017 season, Lynn is 7-6 with a 3.61 ERA. The righty has struck out 93 batters in 102.1 innings pitched, holding opponents to a .210 clip. He most recently threw seven scoreless innings against the Mets (July 9) allowing only three hits. The Cardinals are 43-45 at the break, 5.5 games out of first in the NL Central race. #31 Drew Pomeranz | LHP | Boston Red Sox The 2016 All-Star selection, Pomeranz has helped the Red Sox to 50 wins thus far, leading the AL East division by 3.5 games over the Yankees. The fifth overall pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, the southpaw has been a key piece to Boston’s rotation, totaling a 9-4 record and 3.60 ERA thus far. The Collierville, Tennessee native is one of the top strikeout pitchers in the AL and all of baseball, with 98 Ks in just 90 innings pitched. His last three outings have all resulted in victories, including a four-hit performance against the Twins (June 27), and back-to-back wins within the division against Toronto (July 2) and Tampa Bay (July 7). Making his debut in 2011, Pomeranz is a seven-year MLB veteran.

#14 Alex Presley | OF | Detroit Tigers After receiving the call up to Detroit back on May 28, Presley has appeared in 21 games batting at a .286 clip. The Monroe, Louisiana native has nine RBI, three steals and seven runs scored for the Tigers. He finished the first half of the season on a high note, driving in four runs over his final three games. Against San Francisco (July 6), he had a pair of RBI singles, and followed that with a two-RBI double at Cleveland (July 9). (VIDEO – July 6: Presley’s two RBI singles against Giants)

#7 Seth Smith | RF | Baltimore Orioles A 2004 second round pick, Smith has solidified himself as the starting right fielder for Baltimore. Through 65 games, the Jackson, Mississippi native is hitting .259 with nine home runs and 20 RBI. His 12 doubles rank fifth on the club, and he’s sixth overall in hits with 56. He turned it up as of late at the plate, driving in two runs off a double back on July 2 against Tampa Bay, and totaled five hits in a three-game set at Minnesota (July 6-8) prior to the All-Star break.

#32 Stuart Turner | C | Cincinnati Reds After going on a rehab assignment to the Louisville Bats (AAA), Turner was activated from the 10-day DL on June 18, and has been with the Reds ever since. Overall, the 2013 third round pick has played in 15 games for Cincinnati this season. The Eunice, Louisiana native has three RBI and six hits in 34 at-bats.

#19 Bobby Wahl | RHP | Oakland Athletics Since making seven appearances for Oakland, Wahl went on the 10-day DL on May 24, and has yet to return to action.

Minor League Baseball Rebels

#15 Will Allen | 1B | Lakeland Flying Tigers (A-Advanced – Detroit Tigers The former captain on the 2014 College World Series team, Allen is in his third professional season in the Detroit organization. In 61 games with the Flying Tigers this season, the Gainesville, Florida native is hitting .221 with eight home runs, second-best on the team. His 27 RBI are third-most on the club.

#30 Aaron Barrett | RHP | Syracuse Chiefs (AAA – Washington Nationals) Barrett is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, which caused him to miss the entire 2016 season. In 2014 and 2015, the former Rebel appeared in a total of 90 games out of the bullpen for the Washington Nationals. He is currently assigned to the team’s Triple-A affiliate, the Syracuse Chiefs, as he works on making his return to the mound.

#20 Austin Bousfield | CF | San Antonio Missions (AA – San Diego Padres) The third 2014 All-American part of the Rebels’ run to Omaha, Bousfield is in the midst of his fourth season playing professional baseball. He has played 62 games this season between the San Antonio Missions and the Lake Elsinore Storm. He’s hitting a ta .244 clip with two home runs and 18 RBI.

#36 Matt Crouse | LHP | Erie Seawolves (AA – Detroit Tigers) A 2011 pick in the draft, Crouse has spent a majority of the season with the Seawolves (AA). He got called up to Toledo (AAA) for a spot start, and remained there for five games, where he went 1-2 with a 5.93 ERA. However, his performance in Erie has been impressive, totaling a 5-2 record and 4.50 ERA in 11 starts. Combined, the southpaw is 6-4 this season with 62 strikeouts in 87.1 innings.

#23 Chris Ellis | RHP | Springfield Cardinals (AA – St. Louis Cardinals) A former member of the Atlanta Braves organization, Ellis has split his 2017 season between Memphis (AAA) and Springield (AA). In his 11 games in Memphis, the Birmingham, Alabama native went 2-3 in 32 innings. He’s currently 1-4 with a 4.55 ERA in Springfield.

#32 David Goforth | RHP | Colorado Springs Sky Sox (AAA – Milwaukee Brewers) A 2011 seventh round pick, Goforth has one appearance with the Brewers this season. The rest of his time has come with the Sky Sox, where he has a 4.40 ERA in 31 games. The Meridian, Mississippi native has five shutouts for Colorado Springs, and has struck out 22.

#11 Henri Lartigue | C | Lakewood BlueClaws (A – Philadelphia Phillies) Lartigue has shown improvements from his first season in professional baseball to now, totaling 33 RBI off 29 extra-base hits. His .446 slugging clip is second-best on the club, and he’s first on the BlueClaws in doubles (21). He’s been just as effective behind the plate, throwing out 11-of-19 (37 percent) baserunners.

#15 Braxton Lee | CF | Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (AA – Miami Marlins) The 2014 pick to the Tampa Bay Rays, Lee was involved in a trade back on June 26 that sent he and another minor leaguer to the Miami Marlins organization in exchange for Adeiny Hechavarria. In his 67 games with the Biscuits, Lee was one of the top hitters in the league with a .321 clip. He remains in the Southern League with the Jumbo Shrimp, and has maintained that success thus far with a .366 average in Jacksonville. In just 12 games with his new team, Lee has eight RBI off three extra-base hits and nine runs scored.

#59 Mike Mayers | RHP | Memphis Redbirds (AAA – St. Louis Cardinals) Mayers was recalled from Memphis on June 25 and made two appearances for the Cardinals, one at Arizona (June 29), and most recently against the Nationals (July 2). Since, he’s been optioned back to Memphis, where he’s 5-6 on the year with a 3.71 ERA. The 2013 third round pick was recently named the organization’s minor league pitcher of the month for June, where he went 2-1 with a 0.72 ERA in in 25 innings pitched.

#8 Errol Robinson | SS | Great Lakes Loons (A – Los Angeles Dodgers) In just three months, the Ole Miss fan favorite has made a quick climb to the Tulsa Drillers (AA), where he’s currently hitting .270 in nine games. After starting the season in the Great Lakes (A), the 2016 sixth round pick was promoted to Rancho Cocamonga (A-Advanced) on June 9, before receiving the call-up to AA just 20 days later on June 29. Overall, Robinson is hitting .266 in 2017 with 22 RBI, 18 extra-base hits and 11 steals.

#18 Cody Satterwhite | RHP | Syracuse Chiefs (AAA – Washington Nationals) Satterwhite has spent his 2017 season with the Chiefs in Syracuse, where he’s appeared in 15 games with a 4.18 ERA. The 2008 second round pick has struck out 27 batters in 32.1 innings, and has a 1-3 record.

#17 Wyatt Short | LHP | South Bend Cubs (A – Chicago Cubs) The former Ole Miss closer has spent his season with South Bend (A), where he is 2-3 with a 3.32 ERA in 38 innings pitched. A 13th round selection to the Cubs last summer, Short has amassed 40 strikeouts in just 38 innings, and leads the team with eight saves.

#30 Chad Smith | RHP | Greensboro Grasshoppers (A – Miami Marlins) In 20 games for Greensboro, Smith is 3-0 with a 1.67 ERA. The righty is 2-for-2 in save opportunites and has struck out 26 opposing batters in 27 frames, holding opponents to a .200 clip. The McCalla, Alabama native has allowed just two earned runs in his last 14 appearances, totaling 20 strikeouts in span.

#32 Matt Snyder | 1B | Trenton Thunder (AA – New York Yankees) After being assigned to Trenton back in early May, Snyder played in three games with the Thunder before being placed on the disabled list. He has not returned to play since May 11.

#40 Matt Tracy | LHP | Chattanooga Lookouts (AA – Minnesota Twins) A 2011 pick to the Yankees, Tracy was promoted to Rochester (AAA) on June 11, where he spent eight days. He was then promoted again on June 23 and spent another six days with the club, totaling a 2-2 record and 7.64 ERA in the two stints. He’s appeared in 13 games for Chattanooga, and has a 4.04 ERA and 3-4 record in 62.1 innings. Tracy was placed on the 7-day DL July 6.

#18 Christian Trent | LHP | Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (A – Milwaukee Brewers) Trent has not made an appearance this season. Last year, the former Rebel ace spent time between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Brewers’ rookie league team in Arizona. He was taken in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.

#49 Jacob Waguespack | RHP | Clearwater Threshers (A-Advanced – Philadelphia Phillies) A free agent, Waguespack has played in 21 games for Clearwater this season. In 53.1 innings, the righty is 5-3 with a 2.53 ERA. He’s started seven games, and has one save. The Waco, Texas native has struck out 57 batters, and held opposing hitters to a .234 clip.

#18 Scott Weathersby | RHP | Lancaster JetHawks (A-Advanced – Houston Astros) The 2015 10th round pick to the Astros, Weathersby was recently announced as the new Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Campus Director at Ole Miss.

#12 J.B. Woodman | CF | Lansing Lugnuts (A – Toronto Blue Jays) A second round pick to the Blue Jays, Woodman has played in 65 games for Lansing. He’s hitting .242 with 32 RBI and 21 extra-base hits (13 doubles, three triples, five home runs). The Orlando, Florida native has 14 multi-hit, and nine multi-RBI games in 2017.

#10 Austin Wright | LHP | Hartford Yard Goats (AA – Colorado Rockies) Wright made seven appearances for the Hartford Yard Goats this season before going on the Colorado Rockies’ restricted list, which allows the team to retain his contract rights when he returns to baseball. He last pitched on April 23, tossing a scoreless inning.

#11 Alex Yarbrough | 2B | Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (AA – Miami Marlins) The Miami Marlins claimed Yarbrough off waivers during the offseason, assigning him to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. In 75 games, the 2014 fourth round pick is hitting .239 with 27 RBI. The Allen, Texas native has 19 extra-base hits with 10 doubles, five triples and four long balls.

#25 David Parkinson | LHP | Williamsport Crosscutters (A-Short – Philadelphia Phillies) Since being drafted by the Phillies in the 12th round of the MLB Draft back on June 14, Parkinson has appeared in one game for Williamsport. He threw one inning in that game, allowing a run off two hits with two strikeouts.

#4 Tate Blackman | 2B | Great Falls Voyagers (Rookie – Chicago White Sox) A 13th round pick to the White Sox, Blackman has appeared in 16 games thus far, hitting .185 with three RBI. The Orlando, Florida native has drawn 10 walks and stolen one base for the Voyagers.

#48 Colby Bortles | 3B | Connecticut Tigers (A-Short – Detroit Tigers) A 22nd round pick to the Tigers, Bortles has seen action in 10 games for Connecticut, hitting .265 thus far. The Orlando, Florida native is six RBI off nine hits, and has scored six runs for the Tigers.

#37 Kyle Watson | OF | Bristol Pirates (Rookie – Pittsburgh Pirates) A 37th round pick to the Pirates, Watson has played in six games for Bristol with a .278 clip. The Southaven, Mississippi native has one RBI and two doubles early on in his professional career.

Rawlings Named to Rimington Trophy Fall Watch List

Ole Miss junior Sean Rawlings has been named to the fall watch list for the 2017 Rimington Trophy, announced Tuesday.

The Rimington Trophy recognizes the best center in Division I college football. In order to create this list, the Rimington Trophy committee accepted nominations from programs across the country that submitted their current starting centers for consideration.

Rawlings, who hails from Madison, Mississippi, has played in 21 games with 15 starts over the first two seasons of his Ole Miss career. He started seven games at right tackle and one at center a year ago and is a favorite to be the team’s full-time center entering his junior campaign. He was an SEC All-Freshman pick by Gridironnow.com in 2015 when he started seven games at right tackle and helped the Rebels return to the Sugar Bowl for the first time since 1970.

He is one of eight SEC centers and 70 total men on the watch list.

While more than a dozen All-America teams are selected annually, the Rimington Trophy committee uses these three prestigious teams to determine a winner:

Walter Camp Foundation (WCF) Sporting News (SN) Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) Because the selectors of these three All-America teams can place centers in a “mix” of offensive linemen that includes guards and tackles, their 11-man first teams can often have two centers. The Rimington Trophy committee’s policy is to count all players that play primarily the center position for their respective teams as centers, even though they may be listed as guards or tackles on the All- America teams.

The center with the most first-team votes will be determined the winner. If there is a tie with first-team votes, then the center with the most second-team votes will win. If there is still a tie, the winner will be determined by a majority vote from the Rimington Trophy committee. The winner will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy Presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, January 13, 2018.

About the Rimington Trophy

The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the Most Outstanding Center in NCAA Division FBS College Football. Since its inception, the Rimington Trophy has raised over $2.9 million for the cystic fibrosis community. The award is overseen by the Boomer Esiason Foundation, which is committed to finding a cure for cystic fibrosis and has raised over $130 million for the fight against cystic fibrosis.

Dave Rimington, the award’s namesake, was a consensus first team All-American center at the University of Nebraska in 1981 and 1982, during which time he became the Outland Trophy’s only double winner as the nation’s finest college interior lineman.

Jordan Rodgers, Cole Cubelic and Tom Hart to Call SEC Saturday Night on SEC Network

SEC Saturday Night, the franchise that features SEC Network’s marquee college football game each Saturday, will have a new broadcasting team this season. Former SEC starting quarterback Jordan Rodgers and offensive lineman Cole Cubelic, both who were team captains, will be the analysts, with Rodgers in the booth and Cubelic at field level. Familiar SEC voice Tom Hart will call the play-by-play each week. The trio takes over for Brent Musburger, Jesse Palmer, and Kaylee Hartung who called games for the franchise last season. Palmer remains with ESPN and his role this college football season will be announced soon. Rodgers’ Role Expanded Rodgers moves to a regular game analyst position following a successful first year with SEC Network. During his rookie year, Rodgers was a game analyst on multiple SEC game telecasts, including at Auburn, Kentucky, Tennessee and, his alma mater, Vanderbilt. The California-native rounded out his network experience with regular studio work, appearing regularly on SEC Now, the network’s daily news and information program. Rodgers capped off his first season appearing on the network’s coverage of the SEC Championship game and the College Football Playoff Semifinal at the Chick-fil-A Bowl, including the live Finebaum Film Room presentation as Alabama defeated Washington to advance to the College Football Playoff National Championship. “This past year has been a blast,” said Rodgers. “I am thankful that SEC Network afforded me a variety of opportunities which has set me up for an expanded role in my second year. Tom and Cole are great broadcasters and even better guys. I have watched them for years and look forward to working and learning from the both of them throughout the year. “Overall, there is very little in my life I enjoy more than college football. Now as a game analyst, I look forward to traveling throughout the SEC, being around the best college football atmosphere each week and providing fans my own perspective of the game.” In addition to his prominent position on SEC Saturday Night, Rodgers will continue to appear on SEC Now throughout the season in addition to other SEC Network and ESPN programming and platforms. Hart and Cubelic are SEC Network, Broadcast Veterans Hart and Cubelic join SEC Saturday Night with a wealth of college football broadcast experience, most notably with SEC Network since its launch in August 2014. After spending their first two seasons with other broadcast partners, Hart and Cubelic called games together throughout the 2016 season, which concluded in Nashville, Tenn., at the Music City Bowl where the SEC was victorious, as Tennessee defeated Nebraska. Throughout their careers, the two have worked games in nearly every single SEC stadium.

Prior to SEC Network, Hart and Cubelic called college football games on a variety of ESPN’s networks. Today, both continue to be utilized across ESPN’s networks, including ABC, during the college football season in addition to their regular SEC Network roles. “Jordan, Tom and Cole will be a great compliment to each other,” said SEC Network coordinating producer Steve Ackels. “Tom’s extensive knowledge of the overall production allows him to be our leader in the booth, dictating the action while setting up Jordan and Cole to inform, educate and entertain the viewers. Then, with Jordan and Cole’s knowledge of the league as players combined with their preparation as analysts, SEC Saturday Night will be a great telecast once again this season.” More about Jordan Rodgers Rodgers quarterbacked the Vanderbilt football team during the 2011 and 2012 seasons, following a two-year stint at Butte College (California). In his two years leading the Commodores, he amassed more than 4,000 passing yards and threw 24 touchdowns. In his first season, he led the team to a Liberty Bowl appearance and followed that up with a Music City Bowl, becoming the first quarterback in team history to lead the Commodores to back-to-back bowls. Rodgers an offensive co-caption during his final season and was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

After Vanderbilt, Rodgers spent time with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Miami Dolphins. He starred in ABC’s The Bachelorette in 2016.

More about Cole Cubelic Cubelic played at Auburn from 1996 through 2000, including being voted a permanent team captain of the 2000 squad that went on to win the SEC West. Cubelic has been a popular voice in SEC country for more than 15 years, having begun his broadcasting career shortly after he finished his playing career. During his ESPN/SEC Network career, the Alabama native has been engulfed in college football coverage year around, including multiple bowl games, pro days and spring games to his regular season work.

Cubelic connects with fans on a daily basis as he hosts The Cube Show each weekday on WUMP in North Alabama. He resides in Alabama with his wife, daughter and son. More about Tom Hart In addition to his college football work, Hart has been one of ESPN and SEC Network’s regular play-by-play voices in each of the college sport’s seasons over the last three years, calling basketball and baseball games following the football season. His work in both sports is extended beyond the regular season, having called the SEC Men’s Basketball Championship, SEC Baseball Championship, the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship and College World Series. Hart has also been heard on ESPN Radio’s coverage of MLB and NFL.

Hart joined ESPN with extensive experience, including appearing on Atlanta Braves games for four years. Additionally, he has previously worked at Big Ten Network, CBS College Sports and Fox Sports Radio. Hart is a native of Columbia, Mo., and graduated from the University of Missouri. He now resides in Atlanta, Ga., with his wife and three children.
