one of the reasons why it’s acceptable to racebend a white character but not to whitewash a character of color, beyond the obvious reasons why whitewashing is wrong, is that white is treated so much as the default that turning a character into a person of color is adding something whereas whitewashing often detracts from the story. think about how many characters of color have backstories in which their race is an essential part of whatever events take place, and then think about how many white characters have backstories in which their whiteness matters at all

#anyway i always roll my eyes when people are like 'you shouldn't change old characters you should make new ones'#especially in comics #like nvm that you are Constantly doing far worse things than making a formerly white character a poc #MAYBE poc/queer people/disabled people/etc wouldnt be so annoyed if you hadnt shut them out of the industry in the first place!!!#fans aren't hurting you by drawing fanart and campaigning for new interpretations of characters #in like movies and shit #like that's the thing! usually it's not even the main universe!#but okay yeah throw a fit that some people want to see peter parker as a south asian kid or a latino #yeah yell at them that their established fave can't be gay or trans and they should make their own queer characters #because the fact that there are so few minority characters is totallyyyyy because those minorities are just #what. too lazy and untalented to put in the work?#and not that creative industries have made and still do make an effort to exclude them
