ICONS ONLY: Daniel Brühl Characters (2011 - 2021)
The criteria of this collection changed from iconic looks to favorites, so it ended up being a mix of both. I wanted to do a 3x3, so I kept it to a certain decade to limit the selection pool. It pains me that I had to cut Tony Balerdi, but he felt so out of place with this chaotic, feral bunch. Might just do a different one so I can make it up to him.

Mustache Miscalculation
Pairing: Lutz Heck/Dirk Brûleé
yes. dual daniel brühl but honestly a completely insane combination
Summary: Dr. Lutz Heck, Nazi zookeeper wackjob, goes on a children’s talk show hosted by the most insane man ever, Dirk Brûleé, to rehabilitate his entirely accurate image of being a horrible person. Lutz takes steps before the show to ensure Dirk will make this a positive interview, but he might have underestimated Dirk.

Excerpt:
“I want to be certain we’re on the same page,” Lutz says. The threat is silky and out of place in this loud room. Dirk’s brow furrows more, eyes darting between Lutz’s like he can’t quite believe what’s happening. He opens his mouth and Lutz presses his finger harder against his face. His breath is hot on Lutz’s skin, and a second idea comes to him. It’s not necessary, but it would be pleasing to shut this man up for just a little longer. Maybe it would drive his point home the rest of the way. Dirk needs to know who’s in charge here.

The Wild Kine of Araw
Genus : bovine
Name meaning : wild ox of Oromë
History : Legends claimed they were descendants from Oromë's personal herd of cattle, so they were named Kine of Araw (Araw being the sindarin form of Oromë). They were the quarry of Vorondil the hunter, an ancestor of the ruling stewards of Gondor, and it was he who cut the horn from a kine and made the Great horn out of it, that would later be used by Boromir before his death.
Description : They're barely described at all, save for a brief mention of 'wild white kine' in the appendices of the Lord of the rings, which seems to hint that eventually the Kine of Araw in middle Earth became a sub-species found only "near the Sea of Rhûn" as opposed to being pure Kine of Araw. Which is also supported by the consistent use of the phrase 'wild kine/ox' when describing the history of Boromir's horn. They're also said to be hardier and wilder than any other species of ox in middle Earth.
Influences : In an unpublished manuscript in the Bodleian library, tolkien likens the wild kine to aurochs, an extinct wild ox species that domestic cattle stem from.
Similar species to use as a reference :
Aurochs
"These are a little below the elephant in size, and of the appearance, color, and shape of a bull. Their strength and speed are extraordinary; they spare neither man nor wild beast which they have espied. These the Germans take with much pains in pits and kill them. The young men harden themselves with this exercise and practice themselves in this sort of hunting, and those who have slain the greatest number of them, having produced the horns in public, to serve as evidence, receive great praise." - Julius Caesar describing aurochs in his History of the Gallic War.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since aurochs had been extinct at the time tolkien lived and so little is mentioned about the wild Kine of Araw, its impossible to know how closely tolkien imagined the two species to look, however there are a number of breeds that still exist today that have similar colouring, confirmation and behaviour to both aurochs and wild kine of Araw.
Pajuna cattle
The closest living relative to aurochs in the world, certain lineages are thought to share similar colours and markings with the aurochs and they share the same forward facing horns. They're extremely hardy cattle that have adapted to harsh living conditions.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Heck cattle
Bred by Heinz and Lutz Heck to be a modern auroch in the 1920s - 1930s, they naturally share alot of traits with the aurochs, they are one of the largest breeds in the world and are extremely aggressive, but they are still smaller than an actual auroch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Indian Gaur
One of the largest and most aggressive breeds of wild cattle, if left undisturbed they are more wary of humans but when in regular / semi-regular contact with humans they become aggressive. They've been known to charge without provocation, kill domestic cattle in fights and there's even been reports of them killing tigers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chianina
The largest breed of cow in the world, and is also white which technically makes them closer to the canonical description of the wild kine of Araw than others mentioned. They are more docile than the others on this list, due to working closely with humans and being bred for farm work (pulling carts, ploughing etc)

This post (and maybe more like this in the future) was inspired by @outofangband 's amazing posts on the flora , fauna and general environments of Arda, please go check out their posts if you like this sort of thing.

How do all of the koopas feel about lutzs inconntinence?
Wendy: "Well... it's not my problem, so I don't really care, but I also don't want Luds to suffer from it... There's not much I can do to help. The only thing I can do is let him use my pads and other feminine hygiene products. I have plenty; I'm not afraid of running out or anything. He can use as many as he wants--It's perfectly fine with me. And I hope that helps."
Lemmy: "I don't really know how to answer that. I guess... I don't care? I mean--the fact that he has incontinence doesn't bother me or anything. I would never bully or tease him for having an accident if it occurred. Don't get me wrong, I DO want him to not have to suffer from it! But like... I don't actively think about the fact that he has it."
Jr: "Um... I don't fully understand what incontinence is. All I know is that it's not good, has something to do with his bladder, and it can't be cured. Even though I'm not sure what it means, I do feel bad that he has to deal with it. However, I consider Ludwig to be my friend, and I don't want him to be embarrassed by me asking him personal questions."
Morton: "I feel bad for him. I'm sure everyone's had an accident once or twice in their lives. It's humiliating. But he has to deal with them almost every day. If there was anything I could do to help, I would. Heck, I would even give myself incontinence if it meant that he wouldn't have to deal with it anymore!"
Iggy: "As much as it doesn't seem like it, I care a lot about Luds. I would never intentionally try to hurt or embarrass him. And as much as I love pranking and teasing people, I would never do anything involving his bladder issues. Mocking or taking advantage of someone for something they can't control is just straight up a dick move. There's no better way to put it. And anyone who does try to hurt or embarrass him because of it can go to hell."
Roy: "I love Ludwig more than anyone else in the world, and the fact that he has to put up with THAT makes me sad. Whenever we hang out or are in public areas, I do everything I can to prevent him from getting humiliated. And I always try to remind him, "It's just a little piss. Who cares? It could be worse!" ...The "It could be worse," part doesn't usually help... But still! Accidents happen, and it makes me sad seeing how upset he gets over it--especially considering how often it happens! If there was anything that could be done to fix it, I would sacrifice anything to make it happen. No one deserves to have to go through that, and especially not Luds."
Larry: "Uh....................... I don't really care." (:/)

The zookeepers wife (2017)
Tumblr media
The Zabinskis have many friends, among them a Jewish couple. Their first task, headed by Heck, now a captain and the Reich's newly appointed chief zoologist, is to kill off almost all the remaining animals "because they will not survive the winter." Heck had hidden the fact from Antonina that he wanted the animals for genetic experimentation. The German soldiers move into the zoo and take over spaces that once housed animals. Germany invades Poland months later and the bombings begin, traumatizing the family and animals. It is a sad day when the trucks arrive to take the best of the Warsaw Zoo's animals. Heck makes it a point to declare his nonpolitical status. Lutz Heck (Daniel Brhl), who heads the Berlin Zoo, visits the Zabinskis and convinces Antonina to persuade Jan to send him their best animals for safekeeping during the inevitable war that is looming over Europe. It seems like an idyllic existence for the Jan and Antonina, who work together as partners to run the zoo. Nonthreatening animals roam the zoo freely and a couple of small cats even sleep in the house with the family. In fact, the film opens with her helping to deliver a baby elephant. She is what we would today call an animal whisperer for her skills with animals in distress. Jan is the head of the zoo but Antonina is not afraid to get her hands dirty. Antonina Zabinski (Jessica Chastain) and her husband, Jan (Johan Heldenbergh), live with their son, Ryszard (Tim Radford and Val Maloku), in a villa at the Warsaw Zoo. The film opens not long before Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939. " The Zookeeper's Wife," the latest film from director Niki Caro ("Whale Rider"), is perhaps one of the most unknown historical dramas that took place during World War II and forms part of the canon of Holocaust films. The zookeepers wife movie trailer
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chastain’s fauna-friendly, marquee decency is attractive, sure, but the real work seems to have gone into her oft-unintelligible, Russian-inflected Polish squeak, which too often makes her sound like someone simultaneously defying Nazis and learning English.Īlso Read: Jessica Chastain's New NASA TV Series Slammed As 'Rip Off' of 'Hidden Figures'īeyond an understandable but ham-fisted effort in Angela Workman’s screenplay to make Antonina’s exploitation of Heck’s attraction to her a wedge in the couple’s marriage, “The Zookeeper’s Wife” segues into a straightforward good vs. Heck, played by Brühl with understated squirreliness, okays the idea with a dose of black humor: “A tref farm fed by Jewish garbage, right under their noses!” What he doesn’t know is what Jan and Antonina plan to do behind his back: smuggle back Jews from the ghetto along with the refuse, shelter them, secure them fake passports and get them out of Poland.īecause, really, what else are people so obviously good and honorable going to do? Therein lies the movie’s central problem - there’s little that’s compellingly complex and human about the Żabińskis regarding their herculean effort, and little to shade the Jewish characters beyond their role as herded protectees. Heck wants to transport the best back to Germany as part of an eugenics program to breed super-beasts, but the Żabińskis make a counteroffer: they’ll start a pig farm at the zoo to provide meat for soldiers, using as feed the garbage collected from the newly-formed Jewish ghettos. (The creatures that survived, that is we see many animal casualties among the freely roaming four-legged, while Nazi soldiers take potshots at others for sport.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do-more-than-a-little: pitchforking hay with husband Jan (an effectively solemn Johan Heldenbergh, “The Broken Circle Breakdown”), feeding a hippo, greeting the tigers, nurturing lion cubs inside their spacious home on the zoo’s grounds, and later that night, breaking free of a fancy dinner party - and its political talk of Hitler’s intentions - to tend to a suffocating newborn elephant.Īlso Read: MLB Star Matt Garza Pitches Abstinence to Jessica Chastain: 'It's the Best Contraceptive'Īlso at the party is the Berlin Zoo’s visiting head Lutz Heck (Daniel Brühl), who takes a liking to Antonina, enough so that when Germany invades Poland that fall, he reappears at the bomb-ravaged Warsaw site afterward, in the newly appointed position of Hitler’s chief zoologist, to offer to save the Żabińskis’ most prize animals. Turner”) - a magical strangeness.Ĭhastain’s becalmed, beatific Antonina tends to her menagerie of animals like a Dr. In the beginning, though, set in pre-invasion 1939, Caro gives the Żabińskis’ Warsaw Zoo - dazzlingly recreated by production designer Suzie Davies (“Mr. See Video: 'The Zookeeper's Wife' First Trailer Shows Jessica Chastain Defying the Nazisĭespite the best of intentions, “The Zookeeper’s Wife” and its antiseptic heroism is destined to be the type of movie with a simple message of caring for all God’s creatures, with an unsteady portrayal of the wretchedness of killing as it relates to animals and humans. It’s difficult enough to draw metaphor from the truth of unspeakable evil: in depicting the strange reality that the Żabińskis hid Jews in cages meant for animals (out of necessity) while outside the zoo, Jews were treated like non-humans by an oppressive regime, a whole discussion could be held about the limits of artistic representation when Hollywood deals with the Holocaust. But as refreshing as it is to see a woman in an Oskar Schindler-type role get her big movie due, the trappings of handsome blandness, tinny storytelling and thumbnail-sketch war terror prove too much for this story of a beauty fighting beastliness. “Whale Rider” director Niki Caro’s studiously rendered period epic puts a thickly accented Jessica Chastain front and center as Antonina Żabińska, since Diane Ackerman’s nonfiction book culled its history (and title) from access to Antonina’s diaries. In “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” a regrettable sense of the latter overtakes the former in telling of the Żabińskis, real-life married Polish animal caretakers who saved hundreds of Jews during their country’s Nazi occupation. Some tales are remarkable yet true, while others are meaningful yet dull.
