That One Goal
Summary: Rafaella Fernández, an ambitious soccer player in one of the most famous soccer clubs in the world, Real Madrid, is excited for her most important match in her career. Rafaella, determined than ever before, knows that she will score a goal that she will always remember.
A young woman sat in a chair in the Real Madrid Soccer Club. The young woman was a soccer player for the over 18 Girls Soccer team. This was the last practice until their big game in Melbourne Australia. is one of the strongest players in the team, but that doesn’t stop her from feeling absolutely terrified for the game. Rafaella felt a tap on her shoulder. She turned around and her eyes met her soccer coach, Mr. Ricardo Mendez.
Coach Mendez smiled. “Excited for the game, amigo? I have no doubt that you will make me proud.” He said, smiling proudly. ‘Well, the game is in a few days. You must rest. The club is about to close now.”
Rafaella stood up. She had lost track of time. Rafaella got her Nike sports bag from under the wooden table and swung it over her shoulder. “Bye, Coach Mendez. I will try my best.” With one last smile at her coach, she left the club.
*……….*
When Rafaella got home, she saw her mother immediately. Her mother was very talkative about Rafaella’s appearance…but not in a good way.
She was immediately made fussed over by her mother, about her muddy clothes, her messy hair, her disgusting odour, there was no end. Rafaella rolled her eyes as her mother fussed on. Seriously…?
“Mama, seriously. This is not necessary. I will go have a shower.”
Her mother ignored what Rafaella said. “Rafaella! What did I tell you about not getting your clothes dirty? Ugh, where did I go wrong with you?” She said with an unapproving frown. “Oh well…come along, child. Go have a long bath.”
Rafaella walked along the many corridors of her family’s house. Well…it wasn’t really a house, more of a manor.as she walked, she saw many chandeliers on the ceiling, every single one of them decorated as elegantly as it possibly could. Her family was one of the wealthiest in all of Spain. The estate that her family currently lived in was so huge that Rafaella can’t even gauge how big it is. Rafaella always had everything she wanted, as a single child, her parents made sure to fulfil her every desire.
Rafaella Fernández was always a type of girl who some people would call a ‘tomboy.’ Her mother had always wanted her to be an elegant, posh and fashionable lady like her. That was never going to happen. Ever
On her way to her room, Rafaella saw a maid with a vacuum in her hand, cleaning the rich purple carpet. When the maid saw Rafaella, she did a quick curtsey and resumed her cleaning. Rafaella always terrible when servants bowed to curtseyed to her. She knew they got payed, and they were not treated badly by her family, she just didn’t want to be treated like she was in a higher class than them.
When Rafaella got to her room, she put all her soccer equipment on the floor beside her wardrobe. She strode to her reading table, where a single destroyed book lay. It was covered with brown stains, Rafaella had accidentally spilled coffee on it a few days ago. The book was a gift to her from her diseased grandmother. Every time she looked at the book, she felt terrible and a hole in her heart appeared. Why couldn’t for one she be a less clumsy person?
Rafaella picked up the book with a heavy heart and placed it on the bookshelf. The bookshelf was huge. All the books were set perfectly perpendicular.
Not wanting to hate herself right now, Rafaella strode to her bathroom. Like every part of her home, it was spotlessly clean and beautiful. It was adorned with cream and white tiles with paintings of flowers. There was a wide, white sink on the edge of her bathroom. On the middle of the bathroom was a cream, shiny bathtub, with electronic buttons on the sides that control the temperature of the water.
Rafaella got rid of her clothes and stepped in the bath tub. She turned on the water and set her water to the perfect temperature, Luke-warm. She sat down, hissing at the cold marble at her back. Rafaella lay her head down and closed her eyes, the water filling up quietly.
Rafaella is a twenty – year old woman who loves to play soccer. She played for Real Madrid since she was seven years old. The only soccer practices that she missed was when she twisted her ankle, other than that she was completely loyal and committed to her club. Real Madrid is one of the famous soccer club in the world.  All thanks to the most famous player, Cristiano Ronaldo. Real Madrid gets millions of sponsors from all around the world. From Emirates, Adidas… you name it. The club is never running out of money for equipment. Soccer is the only thing that Rafaella enjoys. She promised herself that she will never give up on soccer.
Rafaella still remembers her first audition to get into the Over 18 girl Soccer team. It was very tense, all the girls were determined to get in. She played to the best of her ability. All her soccer career depended on that moment. Rafaella got the ball in her possession many times. And she scored two goals against the other team of girls, who scored only one. The moment that they were supposed to get the result on who got in, was the most heart racing experience Rafaella ever had. She spent all her childhood and adolescence for that moment. When her coach said her name, her heart almost leaped out of her chest.
Tonight’s practice was the last until after the after the big game in Australia. Coach Mendez had made her team practice non-stop in the last few weeks. Coach is emphatic that they will win, the teams morale was very high.
Deciding she had a long bath, Rafaella stood up from the steaming water. She took a soft bathrobe from the hanger beside her tub. Rafaella put on the bathrobe and went to her room to get ready for dinner.
*……….*
“When will you go to Melbourne, Cariño?” Mr. Fernández asked his daughter. Nudging his golden spectacle up his nose.
“My team and I will go to Melbourne two days from now, on Sunday.” Rafaella replied, smiling. Her father was much more supportive of her soccer career than her mother.
“Hmph,” Rafaella’s mother grunted. “I do not know why girls should be allowed to play sports. I find it ridiculous.”
Rafaella and her father exchanged smirks. Rafaella’s mother, apparently, saw their small exchange, because she frowned. “Sebastian! Are you on my side on not?”
“Por supuesto, estoy de tu lado, mi amor , Of course, I am on your side, my love.” Mr. Fernández said, assuring Rafaella’s mother, but he glanced at Rafaella jokingly.
“Well, Rafaella, do not think that I encourage your silly hobby that you call a career. What was so bad about being a proper lady like your mother? I have sacrificed everything to make you a proper lady. We could have gone dress shopping together, went to balls… But no, you decided to go and get yourself enrolled at a soccer club. You have no idea how much of an affect your silly behaviour has caused my reputation among my friends. Absolutely ridiculous I tell you…”
 *……….*
It was finally time for the match on Sunday. Rafaella stood in a line at the soccer pitch in the stadium in Melbourne. The game was about to start. There were many spectators on the stands, either cheering for Spain of Australia.
When she was about to leave for Melbourne, she received warm goodbyes from her parents. Her mother was openly sobbing in the airport as if Rafaella was about to walk into her death door. After her interrogation from her mother (if she had packed her things, if she will eat enough, if she had to come with Rafaella to Melbourne.) Rafaella finally went to her first game outside of Spain. Even though her mother mumbled her usual speech about her disapproval of girls playing sport. She still bid Rafaella goof luck.
Rafaella’s team was starting first. Rafaella and Fiorella were kicking off. The referee blew his whistle and the game started. Rafaella could not even process her actions. She was playing better than she had ever before. She was passing to her team mates, her team mates passing to her, Rafaella intercepting the ball from the other team.
It all happened fast and soon Rafaella was running at full speed towards the goals. Twenty meters…fifteen meters…ten metres…five metres…and….GOAL!
The stands went wild. Rafaella threw her hands up in victory, her heart bursting with pride. Rafaella then got squashed by her teammates. All the girls were hugging her and some kissing her on the cheek.
This was the moment that she would not even give to the King of Dubai. This was the moment that she will keep treasured in her heart for eternity.
Another team member squashed her in a hug.

A very busy week
This past week was perhaps the busiest I’ve been since I started at Heinz Field. With the Luke Bryan Concert only a few days away and the 4th of July right around the corner and the soccer game right after that, last week was chalk full of meetings, deadlines, phone conference calls, long hours and lots of coffee.
On Monday I had a phone conference call with representatives from Heineken - the sponsors of the upcoming International Champions Cup soccer match on July 25th at Heinz Field. My bosses and I went over all of the details regarding the soccer game as well as Heineken’s sponsorship activation activity.
Tuesday I was working out the final in-house details regarding the 4th of July while contacting our sponsors for that regarding their on-site set-ups.
Wednesday I  was busy hammering out a detailed map of the Y108 pre-Luke Bryan concert event, “Crash Our Party”. I designed a detail map layout, contacted the sponsors about their setups and designed, laminated and cut out credentials for the Y108 radio staff as well as the vendors and media passes.
On Friday, I had another meeting with Aramark about the sale of alcohol for the Luke Bryan concert. I also finished the final adjustments to the “ Crash Our Party” map and created a details sheet with a timeline that outlines everything needed for the Luke Bryan concert, similar to how I did for the Chesney concert.
Overall it was a good week. I learned a lot and kept busy. Its safe to say that I love this internship and it has been an invaluable experience for me.
