So, what I'm getting from your energy is that you're manifesting openness, vulnerability, and honesty. Do you have thoughts on ai art? Honestly I don't want to live in a world where a ton of our media is generated by a computer without someone's voice behind it. Not to mention Google image search is unbearable now with all the ai pieces that show up. And don't even get me started with the deepfake issue. It feels we're heading for a very dystopian time with ai art

I'm the ai art ask person. Not sure if you've seen it already but Sora is a newly released ai model that turns text to video. It's intensely scary and has major implications on how video footage could be used as evidence in court

Fundamentally, I think AI is just a tool. Similar to how other technologies have allowed artists to create art more easily and lowered the barrier of entry to making art, I think AI can help artists and non-artists express their ideas more easily and more fully. AIs are fundamentally a technical tool- they’re great at mimicking things or blending different concepts together, but that’s all they can really do. They’re not good at coming up with ideas that will resonate with people, or creating captivating and believable characters, or tapping into the cultural zeitgeist- they still need an artist to direct them and to come up with the concept. So in that sense, I don’t think using an AI is that different from writers who use ghostwriters or artists who have apprentices who actually make their work or artists who create work that has a low level of technique, or animators who use computer programs instead of animating by hand. Technique has never really been the thing that makes pieces art. Pieces are art because of what they have to say, and I don't think AI will be able to create emotionally resonant work without a voice behind it, at least not any time soon.

That said, as you've pointed out, AI is already a problem, and it's going to get worse if we don't start regulating it from now. I think it's likely that big corporations will try to cut costs by using AI to create mostly decent work instead of hiring humans to do work that's actually good or resonant. I think it's likely that we'll see a lot more junk content that starts to clutter up our entertainment landscape, the way that bots have overrun social media platforms. I think we'll probably need some kind of hard-coded way to identify a piece of media as being AI-created so that we can know if something is a deepfake or not, but our AI tech is moving much faster than our verification tech is right now. I think we need to start creating legislation that determines what people can and cannot legally use AI for, but given that (in the US, at least) our Congress is an average age of 58 and our next president will be at least 78, I don't think it's going to happen as quickly as it needs to.
