[Album] Liela Moss kündigt neues Album "Internal Working Model" an!

Liela Moss teilt die neue Single "Vanishing Shadows", mit der die Engländerin das neue, dritte Album "Internal Working Model" ankündigt (13. Januar 2023 über Bella Union)!

Nach dem eindringlichen "My Name Is Safe in Your Mouth" (2018) und dem synthielastigen "Who the Power" (2020) strotzt "Internal Working Model" nur so vor Frustration über unsere entkoppelte Kultur, brennt aber auch vor dem Wunsch, sich wieder etwas mehr zu verbinden. Mit Moss' ausdrucksstarker Stimme, ist das Album mit seinen neun Synth-Rock-Dramen gleichzeitig zärtlich als auch angespannt - und entschlossen, die Positivität zu nutzen, wo immer sie zu finden ist.

“It’s like a carnival of good will”, erzählt Moss, die auch bei The Duke Spirit singt und gemeinsam mit Toby Butler im Synth-Rock-Projekt Roman Remains gründete. “We see the pretence, masquerade. Then the realness, the love. That’s why the word ‘empathy’ comes up so much and rolls around amongst the most menacing synths. It cannot be kept down, no matter the weight.”

Die neuen Songs entstanden dabei sehr organisch zwischen Moss und Kollaborateur Butler, die im Studio von einem modularen Synthesizer als "drittes Gehirn im Raum" unterstützt wurden: „There’s nothing new in that technology, but in terms of the way we’ve worked for years, working with an anonymous synth brain was a new kind of freedom.”

Auf der ersten Single "Vanishing Shadows" bildet die Gaststimme des Industrial-Elektro-Rockers Gary Numan die perfekte Ergänzung zu Moss' Sicht auf das Chaos der modernen Welt. “There’s a rapture to this bass synth groove; feels like there is something carrying the vocals away, kind of at a gallop.The atmosphere is threatening, but neither can it pin you down. Lyrically I’m thinking about the fear and the passion of irreversible decisions. I’m thinking about that in terms of love and in terms of the planet.”

Less than two years removed from the unveiling of her excellent debut solo album My Name Is Safe In Your Mouth (2018), Liela Moss has revealed that her follow-up effort Who The Power. “Atoms At Me” is the first single from the album and I’ve stuck it on repeat all morning.

“So much of being a musician and live performer is about projecting energy outward, which can be a beautiful and powerful thing,” The Duke Spirit vocalist explains in an official statement. “I experienced a good round of that over previous years, and now wanted to explore my fears of tipping the scales the other way: why should I continue to re-enact the narcissistic habits of our generation, desperate for validation, desperate for space, for ‘a platform’?”

If My Name Is Safe in Your Mouth offered a haunting snapshot of Moss’ restlessly intuitive instincts, Who the Power repurposes and refuels those instincts, standing as fertile testament to the potential in Moss’ self-possessed yet receptive way of working. As she puts it, “My offering is only mine. It lacks ubiquity. Crucially, it doesn't seek to rob from others. In actual fact it only has to feed three mouths, under the shelter they need, and provide enough time to nourish their minds so that they can in turn be in the productive service of others. It doesn't need to win to succeed. Just to be understood for what it is, is enough.” Now that’s a beautiful and powerful thing, indeed.

Liela Moss kündigt nach ihrem 2018er-Debütalbum "My Name Is Safe In Your Mouth" das neue Album "Who The Power" für den 03.08. via Bella Union an (digital only). Mit der Single "Atoms At Me" liefert die Engländerin einen ersten Vorgeschmack auf den Longplayer.

Auf dieser kritisiert die Frontsängerin der Londoner Band The Duke Spirit auf einem melancholischen Darkwave-Pop-Instrumental mit kontrollierter Wut unsere Konsumgesellschaft und sucht nach Möglichkeiten, dieser zu entfliehen. "As I consider letting the tension fall from my shoulders, I’m enjoying a dance of freedom as I reject the bullshit of our consumptive culture", erzählt die Britin.

"Atoms At Me" erscheint samt experimentellem, effektreichem Video, das von Lielas Nachbar und IYEARA-Sänger Paul O’Keeffe inszeniert wurde.

"Who The Power", das mit ihrem Lebenspartner und Produzenten Toby Butler im gemeinsamen Studio in Somerset enstand, ist ein Album voller synthgeladener Intensität und bietet eine eindringliche Momentaufnahme von Moss' unruhigem Innenleben, in der die persönliche Freiheit ganz groß geschrieben wird.

"We spent much of our time playing with vintage synths and drum machines, building a more visceral palette", führt Liela über den Arbeitsprozess am Album aus. "I wanted the album to convey a depth of field, to be multi-layered yet feel simple, and to groove.”

Mit dem neuen Song “Memories and Faces” gibt Liela Moss einen weiteren Vorgeschmack auf ihr Solodebüt “My Name Is Safe In Your Mouth”, welches am 09. November via Bella Union veröffentlicht wird. Klanglich ist der Song trotz sparsamen Charakter voller Emotionen und spannenden Melodien. Es hat eine Art erhabenen Klang, der elegant dahingleitet. Oder wie sie selber sagen würde: “Musically the song is inspired by some of those crawling tempos of Mezzanine-era Massive Attack, whilst I was also chasing a particular kind of a sparse majesty like you hear in Emmylou Harris's ‘Wrecking Ball’”. Das Video spielt mit starker Farbsättigung, Kontrast- und Negativ-Elementen sowie mit psychedelischen Anleihen. Zu dem Video fügt Liela Moss hinzu: “With this video I wanted to play with an idea of a personal memory loop of someone. Ren Rox and I thought about that obsessive quality of remembering, and what it looks like in your mind's eye. You replay, sometimes in colour sometimes in black and white. Often you recall them as they were in a photograph but other times with a less photographic visual quality, distant maybe, as if lost behind a veneer or tv glitch. Whilst all this was going on, I wanted to lie on the floor and pretend I was in a Roxy Music album cover. Just because!”

Liela Moss, ihres Zeichens Sängerin von The Duke Spirit, ist aktuell auf Solopfaden unterwegs und präsentiert mit “My Name Is Safe In Your Mouth” ihr Debütalbum, das am 09.11.2018 via Bella Union erscheinen wird. “The act of making this record has felt truly exotic for me by way of its minimalism”, so beschreibt die Britin den Prozess ihres ersten Solowerks. Klanglich taucht die Musikerin in neue Dream-Pop-Welten ein und präsentiert auf “My Name Is Safe In Your Mouth” wunderbar zarte Melodien, die einen großartiges Gegengewicht zum bisherigen, musikalischen Schaffen darstellen. Moss, die fast 14 Jahre lang eher in der Welt von großen Gitarrenriffs zu Hause war, zog sich für die Arbeit an dem Solomaterial in ihr Heimstudio in Somerset, UK zurück und konnte sich so voll und ganz auf das neue Projekt konzentrieren: “I was in my own modest studio, surrounded by deep rural Somerset, and building the album bit by bit over a year with just my producer and partner Toby Butler – with whom I co-wrote all the music. We worked to our own schedule and across all seasons. Staring out of the window singing, I would watch the changing natural phenomena around me and sing to the forms outside.”

Die magische Schauspiel der Natur in der direkten Umgebung des Studios hat maßgeblich die Arbeit an ihrem Debütalbum beeinflusst. Es kommt also nicht von ungefähr, dass Liela Moss hier mit bildstarker Lyrik begeistert und ihr ganzen Können als einzigartige Songwriterin aufzeigt: “I teased melody out from an abstract, day-dreaming space until I can honestly say I felt that I was attempting to sing Mother Nature into existence.” Mit “Wild As Fire” veröffentlicht Liela Moss den ersten Track samt Video vorab.
