Sulton, Meyer, Rossell, Yokomizo
What topics, points, or ideas did you find important in the text?
What clues does Sultan give in the text to tackle a photographic project about another person?
What do you think about the argument Larry and his dad have about a picture of their mom?
I found it very interesting that the work was originally politically inspired. But we sense the intimacy between his family members despite such intentions. He also emphasize on the struggles that he encountered -- he forced himself to look into his parents’ house in a different perspective and dig out what is interesting. Sometimes for people and things that we are familiar with, we just take it for granted and stop discovering new things. And Sultan certainly struggled to find new inspirations as he kept finding his ideas “strained or foolish,” and he was so nervous about it that he missed out many wonderful moments of his life. He said only when he gave up on taking photos and started to enjoy it, things of value started to happen. I think it will be true for us, too. If we keep thinking about the photographic project, keep picturing how to photograph another person, our minds start to be self-restraint, and the thoughts get narrower and narrower. So maybe we should let it flow, and let the things happening between us and around us inspire us.
About the argument Larry and his dad have, I think it reflects a fundamental difference of thoughts between a photographer and someone whose photo was taken. If we let the model take the initiative of a photography project, he/she would like to show the ideal of them. They prefer a display of their perfect form, or rather, their dream, what they are supposed to be. But photographers think differently, they look forward to convey their idea through the means of an image, and the objects and people in the image are also carriers for the ideas.
But I also think both Sulton has a point. As he noticed, he saw his mother as a mother, while his father saw her as a wife. His father remembers when her mother was young and energetic and special to him, and therefore has a stronger opinion of what Sulton has shown -- old, weary, and typical. But it might be those characteristic of Sulton’s mother has made her familiar and dearly to him.
How does Pedro Meyer’s voice narration in the video impact the project? Would the photographs still work without his voice? What do you think about documenting illness with the camera?
I think it really helped the audience to understand the picture. Without the narration, while I still think the photos are touching, they will not be as touching as it is now. I think documenting illness is a very brave choice of the photographer, since it must be dreadful to see his parents slowly dying. I also think it is very brave of his parents, to know that they are becoming weaker and weaker each day, and still let photos to record those.
What did you find most interesting about the artists and the photographs? What was the least interesting about the ways of approaching "the other" in all these works?
I think what is most interesting is how the photographers approach people in the place of their “natural habitat,” and make them interesting. I am amazed how comfortable Sulton’s parents seem in front of his camera. I also think Shizuka Yokomizo’s work is incredibly powerful -- those people all appear firm and strong. They seemingly have no control of the lights, and what is around the people. I am extremely curious about how Yokomizo makes her objects stand out -- unlike Daniella Rosell, she cannot even arrange the objects around them, she also has very few choices of angles. I really want to learn from her and integrate those into my own project. I was less interested in Daniella Rosell’s picture since they are less relatable to me. The photos of Rosell are clearly staged and deliberate, which are not particularly attracting to me.

Besides my personal opinion for Larry Sulton’s photo, what blew me away within thephoto is that the old lady was watching and smiling at the photographer in a friendly way. In contrast, her husband did not care about taking a picture or being pictured himself. The photo itself has an unknown message to the viewer or watcher; namely, I guess the primary concept for the photo is that the photographer requested the old man to show his face to the camera. He may have said to him “whatever dude, I do not care, let me watch the baseball game alone.” Further, what seemed extremely attractive to me in the photo is that the environment clearly looks suitable in how the view it was pictured fundamentally. Another significant thing to mention here that I enjoyed of the view is that the viewer initially is drawn to the old woman, but the photographer also includes background elements such as the curtain and the Tv’s shelf with the pretty flowers. Lastly, the photographer did a nice job of telling that there was an unknown story behind the photo, and it is up to the viewer to determine what that story is.

I didn't enjoy this talk very much as most of her work was contemporary and that is not the type of photography I enjoy. I didn't understand most of the her ideas and couldn't connect with the images. I did like her commercial portraits though and found it interesting when she talked about her experiences working on commission.
