(In no particular order)
1) Zulu ?? South Africa – The Zulu tribe is popular outside Africa. They’ve been featured in music, documentaries and movies. Shaka the Zulu was a warrior king whose popularity is well spread. Famous Zulus, Lucky Dube, Nasty C, black Coffee etc.
2) Yoruba ?? Nigeria – The Yorubas are globally known for their history, culture, art and literature. Fela, Wole Soyinka, Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, David Oyelowo, John Boyega, Anthony Joshua etc are a few Yorubas who have taken their culture to the world. The Yoruba culture has been featured in many Hollywood movies.
3) Masai ?? Kenya – The Masai are perhaps one of the most documented tribes in Africa, with alot of documentaries shown about them and books written about their culture.
They are known for their traditional clothing and hunting skills
4) Hausa ?? Nigeria – The hausas are very popular. Often known as the Igbos of the North, The richest black man in the world Aliko Dangote is Hausa along with his brother from the same state Kano Abdulsamad Rabiu (BUA). Their culture has also been well written about and have featured in a few Hollywood movies including the Amazon prime series were a woman was seen eating Tuwo shinkafa.
5) Igbo ?? Nigeria – The Igbos are undeniably known world wide. Chinua Achebe wrote about the Igbo culture alot. They are known for their history, culture and literature.

Chinwetalu Ejiofor, Zain Asher, Ckay, Flavour, Chimamanda, phyno, P-square are Igbos who have taken their culture to the world. Igbo are known in Nollywood movies.
6) Swahili ?? Tanzania – This tribe have phenomenal spread their language in East Africa and a few central African nations.
In the 70s, their language was part of the African-American black pride movement been pushed forward.
7) Edo/Bini ?? Nigeria – The Binis are perhaps the culture in Africa with the most famous artworks outside Egypt.
Binis are known for their history, culture and art/architecture.
The famous Benin bronze, ivory and brass artworks are known globally. The country Benin republic gets their name from them. Benin art and culture have been featured in Hollywood movies including black panther. Many Nigerian cultures have roots in Benin. The bronze mask of Queen Idia is perhaps the most famous mask in Africa and one of the most famous in the world. Popular Edos are Kamaru Usman, Rema, Odion Jude Ighalo, Victor Osimhen, Dave, Sam Loco Efe etc.
Asante Ghana – This tribe are known for their history and culture. Popular American hip hop artist was named after this tribe Asante. Their Kente is perhaps the most popular African attire outside of Africa and were known to be masters of the gold craft.
9) The Fulani – This nomadic tribes are known for their history and culture. They are predominantly in West Africa and are found in 18 African countries. Most In Nigeria ??
Popular Fulanis or people with Fulani ancestry are Muhammadu and Aisha Buhari, Tafawa Balewa,
10) Berbers/Amazigh – They are predominantly found in North Africa. They are predominantly found in Morocco ?? and Algeria ?? They known for their use of silver silver. Their culture and history well documented and have a unique language and writing system that traces back to ancient Egypt. Books are currently being written about them including a book titled salt by Haitian-American Pascaline Brodeur.
Disclaimer: Every African tribe and culture is beautiful, unique and important. No one culture is more important than the other. This only highlights tribes known outside the continent overall, this doesn’t mean there aren’t other cultures that aren’t known.

Local Names: Erhe – Urhobo; Iwo – Itsekiri; Ehuru – Igbo; Ariwo – Yoruba; Gujiya dan miya – Hausa; Ukposa – Bini
Consists of: Shell and seed
Parts Used: Seed
Uses: condiment in soups, combined to make spice blends for peppersoup
2. Gbafilo
Other names: Rough-skinned/ Grey/ Guinea plum
Botanical name: Chrysobalanus icaco
Local Names: Gbafilo/ Gbafilor– Itsekiri And out of interest, in Brazil, it is known as Grageru or Abageru
Consists of: Sandpaper like shell and kernel
Parts Used: kernel
Uses: condiment in soups, combined to make spice blends for peppersoup
3. Grains of Selim
The fruits are narrow, slightly torulose, dark brown or black, about 2in. long, borne many (separate carpels) together on a stout peduncle (The Useful Plants of West Africa)
Other names: African/ Guinea/ Ethiopian Pepper
Botanical name: Xylopia Aethiopica
Local Names: Urheri – Urhobo; Unien – Bini; Atta – Ibibio/Efik; Uda – Igbo; Eeru – Yoruba
Consists of: Skin and seeds. The seeds are bitter
Parts Used: both – the skin is used more often, ground and added to soups or bruised and used whole
Uses: condiment in soups, combined to make spice blends for peppersoup, added to agbo (bitters), put in water to purify it, added to palm wine as a flavourer.
4. Uziza
Other names: Bush Pepper, Guinea cubebs, West African Black Peppers
Botanical name: Piper Guineense
Local Names: Edusa – Ibibio; Eti-nkeni – Efik; Uziza – Igbo; Iyere – Yoruba
Consists of: Dried black berries
Uses: condiment used in soups, rice, etc
5. Alligator Pepper
Other names: Grains of Paradise
Botanical name: Aframomum Melegueta
Local Names: Ehie ado – Bini; Ntuen – Efik; Ose oji/ okwa – Igbo; Oburo – Yoruba
Consists of: Skin and seeds. The seeds are aromatic and pungent, with some strains of cardamom flavour
Parts Used: the seeds are ground and added to soups, stews; also chewed with kolanuts where it produces a numbing effect
Uses: condiment in soups, combined to make spice blends for peppersoup, added to agbo (bitters), put in water to purify it, added to palm wine as a flavourer.
6. Tetrapleura Tetraptera
Other names: Prekese [Ghana]
Botanical name: Aframomum Melegueta
Local Names: Aridan – Yoruba; Edem Inang – Efik; Ighimiakhie – Bini; Usho usho – Igbo
Consists of: long winged fruit pods, two hardy, two soft and sweet edible wings.
Parts Used: soft wings are edible and used
Uses: ground for soups, roasted and ground for soups and sauces. Ground pulp is sometimes added to palm wine to flavour it.
7. Umilo, Omilo
Other names: Cocoplum [Caribbean]
Botanical name: Chrysobalanus icaco
Local Names: Omilo/ Umilo – Itsekiri

Now let us get the origin of the 4 Market days in Igbo Tradition. The 4 market days comprises the EKE, ORIE, AFOR and Nkwo who is the last born child, they were originated from NRI during the region of Eze Nrijiofor 1 (1300-1390 AD) and the Fifth on the chronology of the Nri traditional throne or Succession. During this period, 4 wise men visited the palace of Eze nrijiofor and pretended to be deaf and dump and never said their names nether their mission to the palace on arrival, each came with Nkata which literally means Basket, they were taken to the visitors chamber by the Adamma who was the king's servant, later in the evening, the Eze Nrijiofor went to see them but they didn't respond warmly to him and also didn't acknowledge his greetings. Oji (kolanut) was presented to them but they didn't alter a word in acceptance or rejection of the kolanut (oji), late in the night, Eze nrijiofor 's soothsayer sent a rat to disturbed their sleep when the rat went to the first basket belonged to EKE and started to nibble at it, Orie woke up and called " EKE wake up! A rat is trying to get your basket" eventually, EKE woke up the rat ran away, the rat repeated the trickish manner to other baskets to ascertain their names "Anuta Akara Eze". In the morning, Eze nrijiofor went to them and started performing the Oji ututu on that process, he mentioned their names by saying Eke taa oji, Orie taa Oji, Afor taa Oji and Nkwo taa Oji respectively, the visitors who were referred to as "Ndi biala eji ekwu okwu" were astonished and request for water to wash their hands and faces and accepted the kolanut offered by Eze Nrijiofor, after chewing the kolanut, they brought out ITE Ano ( four earth pots) to the king and directed him to keep them in front of NRI MENRI SHRINE outside the Obi or Obu (Palace) with each pot facing the Sun raise, EKE who was the spokesman told Eze Nrijiofor 1, that the pots were Sent down from Chukwu (God Almighty) He instructed Eze Nrijiofor and His people whom he ruled to observed those names daily as market days, during which they will be buying and selling. These market days are used in Igbo land to count IZU (Igbo native week) these four market days marks one Izu (1 week) in Igbo Calender. Tanks for hearing this history, I love u all.

Ọjị is a very important object and highly regarded aspect of igbo tradition and culture.
It is used to welcome guests, and is a symbol of friendship and good neighbourliness.
Ọjị is is used in prayers especially during large gatherings and celebrations as a symbol of respect and communion between man and his deities. It is the eldest man in the room who would break and pray with Oji. In the absence of a man a woman can break Oji but a man cannot eat these lobes .
Ndị ebe anyị sị na : “Ma okwu ga-adị mma, ma ọ ga-adị njọ, a ga-atara ya Ọjị.”
(whether a deliberation will have a good or bad outcome it has to be accorded a kola nut rite.)

Crime Fighting: Imo Govt renews campaign against use of illicit drugs
The Imo State Government says it has renewed the campaign against the use of illicit drugs, narcotics, and other harmful substances in the state.
The Special Adviser to Gov. Hope Uzodimma on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Chief Ezechukwu Ogbonna, disclosed this at a one-day enlightenment campaign against drug and substance abuse, addiction and trafficking held in Ihitteaforkwu, Ahiazu Mbaise LGA of the state, on Wednesday.
Our correspondent reports that the campaign was organised by Ogbonna, in collaboration with the Executive Director of the Coalition of Youth Alliance Movement (COYAM), High Chief Okwudiri Nwandu.
Ogbonna, who noted that mental health issues, crime and insecurity are linked to drug use, cautioned youths not to get involved in the use of illicit drugs and narcotics.
He said Uzodimma’s proactive knowledge of the negative consequences of drug abuse on youths was what informed his decision to create the Bureau of Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring.
He further disclosed that the campaign, which already took place at the Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA on Sunday, will take place in each of the 27 council areas of the state as his office will continue to educate young persons on the dangers of illicit drugs.
Speaking, Nwandu who is also an indigene of the community said they organised the health experts to come and check the health status of the people as early knowledge of one’s health condition will enable timely precautions to avoid complications.
He condemned the use of illicit drugs especially by the youths, adding that “only the living can plan the future “.
He promised to continuously partner with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Bureau of Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring in the fight against drug abuse.
Speaking on the theme, ‘Drug Abuse: Issues and Concepts ‘, NDLEA’s Head of Rehabilitation, Treatment & Counseling in Imo, Ugbede Chiamaka, Superintendent of Narcotics, explained that drug abuse includes the use of illicit drugs as well as the use of drugs without the prescription of qualified medical personnel.
She disclosed that some natural substances like kolanuts have negative effects on the consumers, adding that the negative consequences of drug abuse include madness, cancer of the lungs and mouth ulcer among other health challenges.
Also, NDLEA’s Deputy State Commander in charge of Operations and Training, Mr Lamuwa Shehu, called on parents not to expose their children early to alcohol intake but to watch them closely as they grow.

Alhassan Dantata was West Africa's richest man in the 1940s. He built the Kano Groundnut Pyramids & dealt in kolanuts. Each pyramid had 15,000 filled bags. He became a supplier to British trading companies via Kumasi, Ghana.
Alhassan Dantata opened an account with British Bank of West Africa (now First Bank) with 20 camel-loads of silver coins in Kano, Nigeria in 1929
His great grandson, Aliko Dangote is the World's Richest Black Man.

A lot of people dont know how to pray in tradition,so many people dont have elders at home that can teach them how to break kolanut or pour hot drinks to the ancestors .
When last have you called your ancestors in prayers or mention the names of your great grand parents during prayers or even acknowledge them in your life .
If you are honouring the white peoples gods and ancestors also honour the people that sacrificed their selves for you to be in existence.
You are busy calling saint paul ,saint peter, saint John and many of them to come and carry your request but forgot your own forefathers ,people that died while testing the right food for consumption ,many died while testing some leafs and roots for medical treatment ,our ancestors died while giving us freedom from the hands of the slave masters ,but has already been forgotten by this new generation 🥲 that rejects them and calls them evil but accepts the foreign ancestors and saint's in the bible as their intercessors.
Let us come back and acknowledge our tradition it can help us go a long way
If you cant pray in your native way you better start practicing until you become perfect.
