Thinking about the Roci...
Tumblr media
I love that when my boy Jim named the ship “Rocinante” after his favorite childhood book, it reminded Amos of a woman that was good to him when he was younger who was named the same.
I love that Amos chose to immortalize her as the ship’s emblem when he painted the name on the side.
I love then that when the ship was legitimized, they kept Amos’ choice of decal as if the whole crew adopted this woman as their mascot and now she’s part of the Rocinante’s actual HUD and legal registration.
I love that the Rocinante, a symbol of justice and honor in the solar system, has a sex worker as its emblem and it’s not some vague “sexy lady” pirate logo that has little symbolic significance.
She’s a picture of a woman that meant something to Amos and the representation of a kindness that was given to him.
I love that the Roci still has Prax’s gardening panels lining every inch of the common recreational areas with plants even though he has left them for Ganymede.
I love that Alex treats her like an extension of himself and a valued other crew member. The Roci represents a freedom and purpose that Alex never thought he’d find after leaving the MCRN and his family fell apart.
I love that Naomi’s advanced engineering skills are vital to the operation of the Roci. And that when she wasn’t there for an extended period the boys could barely make it without her.
The Rocinante encapsulates the mission of Jim and the heart of Amos. She is an extension of Naomi’s genius with engineering and Alex’s piloting ability.
But more than that, the Rocinante is their home. The place where they all feel the most welcome and safe. The place where they all feel they can make a difference.
