Kull är typ som Disneyland. Fast utan Disneyland.

drop of the sea- chapter two
Tumblr media
So, I didn't think that I'd get any attention on this fic but some of you guys liked it, which I am super happy about! Enjoy :)
Note: also cuz im a dummy, i made a mistake on the last chapter, which i fixed. I mentioned that Aslaug is still alive, but she in fact, quite dead. My apologies LOL
Prologue, Chapter One
* * *
Maja.
Much had changed since she had last been in Kattegat. Queen Aslaug had been murdered by the shieldmaiden Lagertha, Bjorn Ironside’s mother, when she had taken control of the town. This left Maja feeling conflicted. She had looked up to Lagertha and her legendary fighting skills. She wanted to be Lagertha. However, killing Queen Aslaug, a defenseless woman whose crown had been taken, was something that did not sit right with Maja. All in the name of revenge. She did not understand. She could not understand.
Seeing the Ragnarssons, especially Ivar, sent memories flooding back into her mind. Johan had reminded her that she used to play with Ivar the most when she was a child, and even defended him from the teasing and the taunts that he would receive. Maja smiled at the memory as she recalled. Would he remember? Would he know? When she saw him that night at the feast she saw how he had grown up into a fine young man. Leaning back in his seat, clearly bored, Maja noticed how handsome he was. His shoulders were broad and strong and his features were sharp, his jaw clenched as if he was in pain (Maja knew he was). His rich, dark brown hair was long, unbraided. His eyes were as blue and deep as the ocean and she felt as though she could drown in them. When he looked at her however, she felt them pierce into her, cold like ice. Maja knew he must be hurting from the loss of his mother, and she could certainly see it in his eyes, despite him pretending to be bored and uninterested in what was going on.
When Maja was sitting down during the feast, she felt as though she had eyes watching her. Surely enough, she looked towards the table at the front of the hall to see Ivar and his blue eyes watching her. He had a curious look on his face, almost as if he was memorizing her every move. Maja looked away quickly, feeling her cheeks burning. In an effort to forget the watchful gaze of Ivar, she talked to Inga and Johan but she felt the burning of his blue eyes on her. She turned to look at him again, and sure enough, he was still looking at her. This time Maja met and held his gaze, wanting to show him that she wasn’t intimidated. She saw Ivar’s fist clench and his eyes flashed in anger. Maja wanted to get up and ask him what was wrong, she wanted to take his hand in hers and let him know that it would be okay, whatever that meant. Suddenly, Ivar moved down from his seat to the ground, and he crawled away from the feast. Slightly disappointed, Maja sighed and looked down at the table, wondering why he had looked so upset.
‘’Gods, Ivar sure seemed interested in you.’’ Johan observed, giving her a little nudge, ‘’You ought to be careful, I hear he is fucking crazy.’’ He ended with a laugh, but Maja didn’t find it funny.
‘’Shut up Johan,’’ She muttered, ‘’ You know he just lost his mother.’’ Johan said nothing in response, merely raised his eyebrows in question of his defensiveness and moved on.
‘’You remember playing with him as a child?’’ Maja’s brother asked in an effort to change the subject. Maja nodded.
‘’Yes I do...now that I think of it, more comes to mind.’’ It was like a door had opened in her mind, and memories from ten years ago came flooding through, threatening to drown her. She looked at Ivar’s empty seat, debating inwardly whether she should speak to him tomorrow. She wanted to but a certain nervousness welled up in her belly. She had heard rumours about Ivar; that he was crazy, ruthless, unhinged. Didn’t even get on with his own brothers sometimes. Was that someone that Maja wanted to reconnect with? As if having read her mind, Johan asked her the same question.
‘’Maja, I’m being serious. I’ve heard things about Ivar. I don’t think you should try and get involved with him.’’ Now it was Maja’s turn to raise her eyebrows.
‘’Well, once we arrive in England I’ll have to be involved with him if I want to be a part of the real action.’’ Maja replied, half joking, ‘’Johan, calm yourself.’’
‘’Don’t underestimate Ivar Ragnarsson,’’ Johan warned, putting a hand on Maja’s arm, ‘’I know he’s only a cripple, but he has dangerous brothers.’’ Maja snorted. She supposed Johan was warning her about them finding out about her Saxon background. Many Vikings had given her trouble over it, but she could easily show them exactly how much Viking was in her.
‘’I think Ivar is the most dangerous one of them all, don’t you?’’ Maja returned after a moment of thought. ‘If I’m going to be careful about any of those brothers, it will be him.’’
Ivar.
In an effort to keep up with his brothers, Ivar was using his hooks to claw at the ground as he dragged himself across the grass. He winced slightly at the pain in his legs that plagued him day in and day out, but he quickly forgot it when he approached a group of warriors training in a clearing. Ubbe had made him come along to look at the preparations being made for the trip to England, and the rest of the Ragnarssons had come along. As usual, the brothers got distracted by the combat training that was taking place. Upon looking up, Ivar recognized Maja, who was sparring with another shieldmaiden. Rather than her dress from last night, the girl was dressed in pants and leather armor. She held a dagger in one hand and a sword in the other, and as she moved her short hair swayed from side to side. Almost mesmerized, Ivar watched intently as Hvitserk sat him down on a stump. Maja and the other woman danced back and forth, taking practiced slow motions with their weapons. Upon seeing Ivar and his brothers, the two women ceased.
‘’Sons of Ragnar,’’ Maja greeted, twirling her sword and taking a deep bow. Whether she was mocking them or not, she gave them a cheeky smile, ‘’Here for a little combat practice?’’ Ivar exchanged a look with his brothers and a pang of usual resentment and anger hit him, just as it did whenever he was reminded of his inability to stand, walk, or to fight. He pushed it away.
‘’Yes we are,’’ Hvitserk began, ‘’We hear that you are a gifted shieldmaiden.’’ Maja looked at her friend and then back at Hvitserk, suppressing a laugh.
‘’I’m alright.’’ She replied in a teasing tone, ‘’Why do you ask?’’ Hvitserk looked at Ubbe quickly.
‘’We want to see it first hand,’’ Hvitserk explained, ‘’Spar with Ubbe, he’s the best of us...for now.’’ He added at the end, giving his brother a shove. Ubbe nodded and stepped forward, unsheathing only his axe from his belt, apparently thinking that he would not need his sword. Maja looked him up and down and gave the oldest brother a crooked smile before she looked at her friends.
‘’Very well.’’ Maja responded, her shoulders shrugging. Ivar wanted to laugh. She knew how to act casual and undisturbed, that was for sure. Maja turned, but not before giving Ivar a side-long glance as she strode to one end of the clearing. Ubbe shifted his axe from hand to hand, watching the girl as she readied herself. Seeing the two standing there, Ivar felt a sense of apprehension. Maja was much smaller than Ubbe. Her build lighter, legs and arms shorter. Could she really be able to put up a fight against Ivar’s brother? The look on Maja’s face told a different story. She looked unfazed, a confident smile ghosting her face.
‘’Come on then,’’ Ubbe goaded, ‘’Make a move.’’ He held his axe up in a readied position, but he too seemed quite confident, probably assuming this would be an easy fight. Maja raised an eyebrow and moved her sword to rest on her other arm, pointing the edge to Ubbe as she ran to him. At a speed that took Ivar by surprise, her sword flashed out to Ubbe in several powerful jabs that he skillfully dodged. Ivar chuckled as he saw the look of confidence drain from Ubbe’s eyes. Maja spun to meet Ubbe’s axe with her sword, and Ubbe seemed to regain his senses as he drew his own sword, throwing the axe to the ground.
‘’Smart!’’ Maja called out teasingly as her sword clashed against his time and time again. Ivar was amazed. Maja moved at lightning speed and although Ubbe was fast, he struggled to keep up. Weaving in and around the tall Ragnarsson, Maja met his every blow. The way she fought was as fluid and beautiful as dancing, and Ivar was mesmerized by the sheer power of her blows. Ubbe kept backing up, barely managing to avoid her attacks, but he managed to land a hit with his fist and Maja went sprawling down. Seeing this, Ivar felt his heart leap up into his throat, but Maja stayed low and spun at an inhuman speed, cutting Ubbe’s leg with her knife. Wincing, Ubbe attacked again, but Maja was jumping from place to place, still out of his reach. Wielding both her knife and sword in one hand, she used them as one weapon to attack Ubbe, who just barely avoided a knife to the back. Ubbe finally managed to shove Maja back, sword at her throat as he disarmed her own sword, but Maja seemed unbothered. Her knife made do as she used it to feign a stab to the stomach and use Ubbe’s body weight against himself as she swung out his legs from underneath him. Ubbe was skilled enough to recover quickly and to meet Maja yet again with a clash of his sword. Ivar and his brothers stared at the two as they continued their dance. Ivar, who usually tried his best to seem unimpressed, found his mouth open as he watched Maja. Her moves were so quick and calculated, as if she had practiced this particular fight for years and years. Her face was contorted into a scowl, eyes narrowed. Finally, she managed to disarm Ubbe when she rushed at him, and with a last spin she held her dagger to his throat. Ubbe was left panting a he held his hands up in defeat.
‘’Alright, alright! The fight is yours.’’ Ubbe declared, a small smile forming on his lips. Chest heaving as well, Maja lowered the dagger from Ubbe’s neck and grinned.
‘’That was a good fight.’’ She exclaimed. She held out her hand to the brother, giving him a hopeful look. Ubbe laughed and took it, giving her a warm smile.
‘’You are quite good, I must admit.’’ Ubbe observed in a jokingly begrudging tone and Maja beamed. Hvitserk shared a look with Ivar, seemingly shocked at what had just unfolded.
‘’By Thor, I want to kick Ubbe’s ass like that!’’ Hvitserk cried, making his way over to take part in some of his own combat practice. Maja laughed and shook her head, sheathing her weapons as the two brothers agreed to spar. Ivar watched as Maja cast a look in his direction. After a moment of what seemed she was debating whether or not to do it, she approached him.
‘’Ivar the Boneless,’’ Maja mused. She was there right beside him, talking to him, after all these years, ‘’Do you remember me?’’ She leaned against a nearby tree, giving him a steady look. Ivar produced a cocky smile as he turned his upper body to look at the girl.
‘’I do actually,’’ Ivar responded, leaning closer to Maja, ‘’I remember how you would bring me rocks to play with and….defend me from the other children. I appreciated your pity when I was a child.’’ Maja looked surprised, her eyes widening.
‘’Pity?’’ She questioned, shaking her head, ‘’Ivar, you are too cynical. I was a child, just trying to defend my friend.’’ She gave him a little nudge with her elbow, a cheeky smile growing on her lips. Ivar suppressed the smile that he himself felt coming on and instead rolled his eyes, ignoring the soaring feeling in his chest when she touched him.
‘’Whatever you say,’’ Ivar scoffed, ‘’I don’t need your pity now.’’
‘’Ivar,’’ Maja grew more serious, ‘’Calm down, I’m not here to give you pity, although your mother is dead because of Lagertha so…’’ she trailed off, ‘’It would only be right.’’ Ivar stared at her. If anyone else had said that to him he knew he would have been sent into a rage at the mention of his mother, but he burst out laughing instead. Maja grinned, but looked relieved that Ivar hadn’t gotten angry.
‘’You’re right actually,’’ He chuckled, managing to forget the rage that usually came about when he thought of the death of his mother. ‘’Well, now that we have both grown up, it is nice to see that you fight like you actually have Viking blood.’’ Ivar watched Maja’s face carefully at this subtle jab. Her brown eyes narrowed but she seemed relatively unaffected.
‘’Yes well it’s the only way some will forget that 17 years ago I was born in England.’’ Maja quipped back. Ivar chuckled and nodded, holding his hands up.
‘’Don’t worry, I have nothing against Saxons Maja.’’ This seemed to get under Maja’s skin. A look of annoyance grazed her usually calm face.
‘’I’m not a Saxon, you just saw me prove that.’’ She hissed. Maja was giving Ivar a look that he knew would make any man nervous.
‘’Nothing wrong with being a Saxon!’’ Ivar said cheekily, enjoying the fact that he was able to break through Maja’s confident exterior. The girl only rolled her eyes and looked away to watch Hvitserk and Ubbe who were still sparring. After a moment of silence, Ivar asked; ‘’I’m assuming you are ready to kill some Saxons, are you not?’’ Still not looking at him she nodded.
‘’Of course,’’ She sounded a bit annoyed at this point, ‘’I’m here to help you get revenge for the death of your father.’’ She paused suddenly and then turned to meet his gaze. ‘’ And I’m here to defend you, once again.’’ Now it was her turn to laugh and Ivar’s to be annoyed.
‘’Defend me? I don’t need defending.’’ Ivar protested.
‘’I’m teasing Ivar,’’ Maja promised, ‘’I’m smart too you know. I’m very aware that you’re the most dangerous Lothbrok.’’ Sending a wink in Ivar’s direction, she sauntered away, leaving Ivar the Boneless staring as she walked away. Watching her walk away left Ivar with mixed emotions. Here was someone he hadn’t seen in ten years, and yet he felt drawn to her, like he needed her, but he knew that nothing good could come with this useless attachment. Ivar thought of Margrethe, the slave he had wanted only because his brothers wanted her, and he feared what would happen to him if Maja ever had the same reaction to him. Still, the thought of Maja tugged at his heart, and he wished he could stand up and run after her.

MIDSOMMAR (2019)
Starring Florence Pugh, Will Poulter, Jack Reynor, William Jackson Harper, Liv Mjönes, Anna Åström, Julia Ragnarsson, Isabelle Grill, Louise Peterhoff, Archie Madekwe, Björn Andrésen, Henrik Norlén, Gunnell Fred, Anki Larsson, Vilhelm Blomgren, Ellora Torchia, Austin R. Grant, Johan Matton, Rebecka Johnston, Levente Puczkó-Smith and Mats Blomgren.
Screenplay by Ari Aster.
Directed by Ari Aster.
Distributed by A24. 145 minutes. Rated R.
I’m reluctant to give a review of Midsommar. The people that I have warned since watching the film a week ago have fallen into two categories. Those disinterested in horror films nod, and agree, this is not the film to venture into the horror genre. They thank me for the warning and don’t think about it again.
The other category of friends, those who enjoy horror films, get a twinkle in their eyes when I mention phrases like “horrifyingly graphic” and “nightmare inducing.” They thank me for my frank analysis and ask when the film is being released, credit card in hand, ready to experience the horrific, small, Swedish village cult for themselves.
I took my kid, a 17-year-old film student, as my guest. She can legally see rated R films on her own, has watched and appreciated films like A Clockwork Orange and Pulp Fiction. As we finished Midsommar, we sat in silence, mouths agape, watching the credits move by. We were not alone. About half of the audience had the same response. The other half were outside talking about the film as we finally felt able to walk out.
She then went on to ask if there was a line that one had to cross, psychologically, to create a film like this. Worse, that a group of people, the studio, agreed to create something so horrific. It’s an interesting question that some other non-horror viewing friends have mentioned. Where do you draw the line between entertainment and insanity? For me, Midsommar teetered on the edge of this line.
Florence Pugh, one of my favorite current actresses (Outlaw King, Fighting with My Family) plays Dani, a very well-written young woman with family difficulties and anxiety. She is articulate about her feelings yet overthinks her relationship with her boyfriend of three-and-a-half years, Christian – played by Jack Reynor.
She senses the unspoken tension but is so in need of the relationship that she rationalizes his distance and poor behavior, both signs of his desire – but inability – to break up with Dani. Christian is that guy – the one who acts kind and supportive to Dani’s face, but rolls his eyes at her frequent texts. He has told his friends of his need to break up with her for nearly a year. She deserves so much better but is too committed in the relationship to see any fault in Christian.
Instead of breaking up with Dani, Christian takes the coward’s way out. He invites Dani to join him and his three friends (Mark, Josh, and Pelle) on their trip to Sweden. Pelle had invited the three friends to his rural village for their unique Midsommar festival. While he initially appears put out by the additional guest, he quickly makes Dani feel very welcome to join in on the experience.
While the early story is dominated by tragedy, it becomes rapidly apparent that the dialogue is swift, smart, and humorous. The audience also quickly catches on that they are being pulled along on an odd, unsettling, slow observational journey.
The visitors from outside of the community (including Dani, Christian, Mark, and Josh) are being led to believe that villager behaviors are culturally driven and thus able to be excused by cultural differences. Only the audience can see the big picture and know that things are terribly wrong. By the time the characters, individually, figure out what is going on, it is too late and one by one, we watch the remaining characters disappear. Question is, where do they go? And the bigger question is why?
I’ve not watched director Ari Aster’s 2018 Hereditary, but I know it got a lot of people talking. While I understand that they are different, with Hereditary said to be more frightening and traditional to the horror genre, I am not in a hurry to watch it after my Midsommar experience.
Which is a shame, because Midsommar was beautifully filmed, had smart dialogue, well-developed characters, stunning editing, and surprising special effects. But the visuals and cult-focused plot points were so unsettling that a week out from my screening, I continue to feel queasy if I focus in on the visual details. I will have to think twice before watching another Ari Aster film and I am NEVER going to Sweden.

Örnsberg - I Love You
Tumblr media
The latest track from Johan Ragnarsson’s Örnsberg, the Stockholm artist presents “I Love You”. Saturated with its dreamy sustain, the track with its soft, Balearic flows, saunters in the warmth of its beachy textures. With the gulls calling and the sound of the water crashing, “I Love You” is complimented by the gentle romantic of its coaxing vocal tone. Completing with the flourish of its fading guitar solo, Örnsberg’s stellar track is a long for that summer saudade as he explains:
“The song is about missing someone; someone you can’t let go of; someone who has affected your life. Even though you know you may never see that one someone again, you know you will never forget them.”
