"I was a little reluctant to work with [Mariah], because I enjoyed her, but I wasn't a fan....I didn't feel like, I want her to sing my songs...So when we actually met--she came with the....big entourage and the whole deal, private jet....I was like, here we go. And then we actually got in the studio with her....She was the most focused, savvy--particularly savvy. She knew her way around the hook like nothing else. Like....you would go to a chord and she'd go, 'No, that's not going to work for Top 40.' Or you'd put a beat in and she'd go, 'No, the hip-hop crowd won't like that.' .... She was so aware of who her audience was....what they wanted, what they expected, and what she wanted it to be. I turned into the biggest Mariah fan, me and Terry [Lewis] both, and I still am to this day."
