A collection of sketches, scribbles, and studies from the last couple months! Not much explanation to go along with these except for the last one, which is specifically one of the holos Speedy took himself that's mentioned in this post.
Bonus:
Tumblr media
A special guest appearance by Shaw who's about had it with the transferred natborns he's suddenly having to work with. Technically not a Sundown character, but didn't want to leave him out. Lol

In honor of Disability Pride Month, here's part 4 of a look at some of the characters in the Sundown story that have disabilities! Last up is Master Golana Eeridos.
Golana has muscular weakness in her lower back, hips, and legs that predominantly manifests on her left side. This weakness was the result of a severe injury she received while out on an assignment with her Master when she was 16.
Force healing and physical therapy were able to expedite her recovery after the injury, but it still took a year before she was able to reliably walk on her own with the assistance of a cane. Adjusting to her new circumstances was very difficult, and she found herself having less and less energy as time went on.
Hoping to find something to take her mind off of things as she recovered, Golana turned to the arts. Weaving was especially calming to her, and she began spending much of her time honing her abilities to weave using the Force. It wasn’t long before her skill caught the attention of the Master Jedi Artisans, and they began training her in advanced techniques. Golana thrived under their tutelage, and the emphasis on Force weaving eventually had an unforeseen beneficial side effect. Learning Force weaving greatly honed her Force sense and gave her highly refined control and precision. This allowed her to learn how to passively support herself using the Force, and greatly reduced her pain and fatigue. She still relied on her cane for additional support, but she was now able to do more with less energy.
Further building on these new skills, Golana invented her own lightsaber technique that relied on maneuvering the saber with the Force and had an emphasis on a solid stance and limited footwork. This resulted in lightning fast reflexes and the ability to reliably defend in all directions without having to exert too much energy.
These were all skills that Golana was able to teach Nitsani when she took her as her Padawan. Golana’s unique experiences and techniques made her the perfect to fit to help Nitsani learn how to navigate her own disabilities.
Additional note:
The “level” Nitsani is training with is supposed to be similar to a Spirit Level, but instead of being used in construction it’s designed to be a puzzle game that helps younglings improve their Force sense. The youngling must sense the positions of the bubbles and then use the Force to rotate the level until the bubbles correctly align. Having to work with liquids and solids at the same time is an excellent mental exercise and requires the younglings to not rely heavily on their traditional senses.

Some random scribble scratching! Sundown are sent to investigate a lot of different things, including places like ancient ruins that are rumored to have Force connections.

In honor of Disability Pride Month, here's part 3 of a look at some of the characters in the Sundown story that have disabilities! Next up is Nitsani.
Nitsani was born with a condition that causes chronic inflammation and stiffness around the joints in her hands, arms, and shoulders. The condition got progressively worse as she aged, affecting more areas more frequently.
While living at the temple, her symptoms were well managed through a combination of Force physical therapy and traditional medicine. And, under the tutelage of Master Eeridos, she was taught specific Force techniques to help reduce strain and lower fatigue.
After being deployed with Sundown Squad, however, her condition began to change. The assignment necessitated being away from the temple for extended periods of time, and required far more physical exertion than she was used to due to the nature of their missions. Being away from the temple meant she had less access to Force therapy and had to rely on herself for Force-based treatment. She still had full access to her medications, but the lack of additional therapy slowly began to make managing her condition more difficult.
Ultimately, Nitsani became more susceptible to injury and found herself in pain over seemingly innocuous things (like accidentally stretching wrong). Because of this, she'd often end up in the medbay for additional treatment. And consistently, she'd run into Knox who was also there for treatment. Knox wasn't there due to any chronic conditions, but his specialty in hand-to-hand combat and general propensity for being a bit impulsive meant he was a medbay regular. Nitsani and Knox eventually started calling each other their "ice pack buddy" since they were in there together so frequently.

A doodle of Kess that I decided to finish and turn into a study of sorts! He’s listening to Nitsani try to delicately and politely explain to a very assertive delegate that his policies are dumb as hell.

Here's some concept drawings I've been working on for the upcoming episode script The Storm Within! The episode will include a handful of complete illustrations, but here's some of the comps I did to get a feel for the scenes. The episode includes flashbacks to an earlier mission, so you'll get to see the squad in their original commando gear, too! From top to bottom, the images are: Drums disobeying orders for the first time ever, Drums continuing to disobey orders, Drums having a "No good, very bad day", and Drums having a "No good, very bad day" part two.

Some doodles of the squad training the ottas how to wear a saddle for the first time! Thea and Noddle got the concept quickly. Riggs immediately decided she wanted nothing to do with it.

Sometimes the best thing to do when you have a long layover at a random spaceport is to find a nearby rooftop with an awesome view and go eat snacks up there. Bonus points if it's near the port so you can watch the ships taxi in and out.

Sketch Dump #3! Some more unfinished works including: the squad on a mission planetside (this was before the ottas were big enough to ride, so they were still hoofing it on the ankle express lol), Speedy performing one of his infamous "trick shots" with dramatic backlighting, and a study of Nitsani with Riggs that I ended up using to mess around with her new outfit design.

And here's the last one, Sketch Dump #5! This was a short experiment I did to test out some features and mess around with the formatting of the episodes. This thing is only 21 seconds long but I learned so much trying to make it. Lol
And here's a still of that first frame:

Sketch Dump #2! Another collection of random sketches including: the squad about to accompany a team of ARF troopers and their AT-RTs on a mission, Speedy being dramatic, and a tiny hint at the plot of one of the heavier story arcs in the series.

Here are some new profile pics for the squad that I'm using in an upcoming piece! I spruced up Kess and Speedy's old ones and made new ones for everyone else. The icons will be kinda small in the final thing so I wanted to post the full-sized ones too. <3
Some little tidbits about these:
Speedy took all of these pictures except his own.
Kess would have kept the default profile pic on his account forever if Speedy hadn't finally made him change it (Kess normally doesn't like having his picture taken, so Speedy went out of his way to get a good candid of him instead).
Drums can also be a little iffy sometimes about having his picture taken, but he liked this one because it was of his left side.
Knox and Speedy had to take, like, 30 separate photos before they got Noodle and Thea to sit long enough to get Knox's pic.
The sign behind Chigba says "Must be this tall to ride". Lol

Sketch Dump #4! This one is a collection of one of the first groups of story boards I did back in 2020 to try and mess around with how to organize the boards. It features the squad on a mission to retrieve some data from a downed LAAT, as well as one of the first iterations of how the squad met the ATVs (at this point they weren't even called ottas yet; they actually had a very different design when I started). It's also the first instance of the bag of Cracker Puffs which has somehow managed to make its way into other pieces when other things from these boards didn't. Lol Basically this whole thing was just a giant experiment.

Here's a little sneak peek at the chat animation I've been working on! When completed, it will be interactive and viewers will be able to press a button to progress the dialogue at their own pace. It's a simpler animation test to make sure all the functionality I want for the interface will work before I start using it for the actual episodes. Didn't want to start animating full scenes only to realize something wouldn't work. Lol So keep an eye out for the final thing to see what Speedy is on about. ;D

Second Anniversary Asks # 1 — @gaeasun
Transcript under the cut!
Gaeasun: Hi Nitsani, I really love tea too! Do you have a recommendation for me?
Nitsani: Hi there! Yes, we have a whole bunch!
Nitsani: I’m not sure what kind of tea you’re into, but if you like milder tea, my personal favorite is Gatalentan tea.
Nitsani: It’s smooth and sweet, but also has awesome calming properties.
Nitsani: So definitely don’t drink it if you’re planning to go anywhere, you’ll be too sleepy to function. Lol
Nitsani: We’ve also recently gotten into drinking Devaronian honey tea, that one goes great with biscuits.
Nitsani: Oh, berry tea is also a good one!
Speedy: u just gonna skip over the snapping tea?
Nitsani: Well, yeah, I didn’t want to suggest the tea that could destroy their taste buds. Lol
Nitsani: Fine, ok. There’s also this one called Snapping Tea.
Nitsani: It has these little pearls that you drop in hot water and they pop and snap as they get mixed in, it’s cool.
Nitsani: However . . . Turns out it’s spicy.
Knox: Like, really spicy lol
Nitsani: Chigba loves it, and apparently Dugs have an incredible tolerance for spicy stuff that humans just do not have.
Nitsani: Basically, Knox tried it and his mouth went numb for three and a half hours.
Knox: It was horrible, I loved it. 😂
Nitsani: So, if you want to drink something you’ll immediately regret, then go for Snapping Tea.

So Nitsani has the special box of teas and snacks. whats everyones least favorite type of tea and what’s their favorite? How many types, on average, can you find in her box?
Thank you for asking about the tea box! <3
Nitsani's tea chest has room for eight tea canisters (they're two inches in diameter and two inches deep) and she always has all eight filled. Once each member of the squad figures out what tea they like the best, then she dedicates one canister to each person. The other canisters are then filled with any flavors they're all test driving.
Kess likes good-old-fashioned black tea with some honey/nectar tossed in. He prefers a smoother flavor so he doesn't let it steep too long.
Speedy likes a special kind of tea that's black tea mixed with mild citrus flavors that has a distinct smoky flavor (think bohea tea). The tea has a pretty intense flavor so it can't be steeped too long, but he likes the boldness of it.
Knox likes black tea but prefers it sweeter or with milk. He's not a fan of bitter teas at all, so he'll load it with sugar or honey if it's too bitter. He once tried Speedy's favorite flavor and declared "There's not enough sugar in the galaxy to make that not taste like a campfire".
Drums' favorite is a blend of herbal tea, cinnamon, and vanilla. He loves the flavor but it's also decaf so he can drink it if he's having trouble sleeping.
Nitsani is a fan of Gatalentan Tea for its smooth flavor and calming properties. It's her tea of choice before starting meditation. She also loves green teas.
Chigba loves spicy tea (think masala chai) with full-bodied flavor. The tea has to have distinct flavor otherwise she'll say "it's just hot water".
If you ask any of them what kind of tea is their least favorite, they will all, without hesitation, say "that spice tea we picked up on Taanab." The squad stopped at the spaceport on Taanab to restock on supplies for the ottas and took a spin through a local grocer before heading out. The tea they bought was advertised as being "Rated the #1 tea brand three years running." As it turns out, the tea was rated #1 among Chagrians... a species renowned for their miserable sense of taste. The tea itself smelled amazing but somehow ended up tasting like wilted kale.
