History

The public gardens around the St Pancras Old Church were opened in 1877,after the churchyard was closed for burials in 1850.The gardens are made up of part of the old churchyard for the church of St Pancras,enlarged in 1800,and a separate burial ground for St Giles-in-the-Fields,added 1803.It was a preferred burial place for Catholics,with an area devoted to French émigrés.The burial ground and churchyard were partially destroyed by the development of the Midland Railway;the company formed a cutting in 1865 for the construction of the railway lines from St Pancras Station.The clearances of tombs and bodies was highly controversial and caused considerable protest;the graves were dug up at night,behind screens,a process overseen by Thomas Hardy,then an apprentice architect,and many years later recorded in a poem,‘The Levelled Churchyard’(1882).The grandest tombs survived,including the tomb to Sir John Soane(d 1837)and his wife(d 1815),but others were moved.The ground was levelled and the headstones were placed in mounds or around the walls.In 1875 the remaining land was acquired by the St Pancras Vestry for use as public space,and the gardens were opened to the public in June 1877;Baroness Burdett-Coutts laid the foundation stone of the monument she had presented,to commemorate the graves disturbed in the construction of the railway.The gardens were laid out in their present form in 1890-1 by the Vestry,in conjunction with the Midlands Railway Company. Angela Georgina Burdett, suo jure Baroness Burdett-Coutts(1814-1906)was a prominent philanthropist who is estimated to have given away between £3 and £4 million.As described by her biographer Edna Healey,in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography,Burdett-Coutts set a new standard in philanthropy:prompt and practical,her charity was given with style and without condescension.In her time she was an honoured institution and most of her enterprises bore lasting fruit.Even her visionary schemes that did not survive–Columbia market and Columbia Square–served as models for the shopping precincts and housing estates of a later era.In the breadth and sincerity of her sympathies and in the variety of her social and intellectual interests she has had no rival among philanthropists before or since.Her example not only provided an immense stimulus to charitable work among the rich and fashionable but also suggested solutions to many social problems.She was the first woman to be given a peerage,in 1871,and was thus described by Edward VII:‘after my mother the most remarkable woman in the country’.Burdett-Coutts lived with her companion and partner Hannah Brown for 52 years,after whose death,she married her protégé,William Lehman Ashmead Bartlett;it was called the ‘mad marriage’ by Queen Victoria,for Burdett-Coutts was 66,and Bartlett 29. Burdett-Coutts commissioned this memorial to commemorate a diverse group of people whose graves had been destroyed by the development of the railway.Among the names included on the memorial is that of the Chevalier d’Eon,who was a celebrated French spy and diplomat in the eighteenth century.The Chevalier lived the first part of their life as a man and the latter as a woman.Their gender was widely speculated about,and they were written about in many satires and pamphlets.D’Eon used female pronouns in later life,and signed their name as Mademoiselle d’Eon. Numerous other significant historic figures are noted on the memorial, including Sir Edward Walpole, Sir John Soane, and sculptor Thomas Flaxman, whose tomb (q.v.) stands nearby. The burial of Sidly Effendi, the Turkish Ambassador, presumably a Muslim, is quite unusual. In line with Burdett-Coutts’s humanitarian principles, a special dedication is made to the ‘memory of those whose graves are now unseen, or the record of whose names may have become obliterated’.

Memorial sundial,1877-1879.Designed by George Highton of Brixton for Baroness Burdett-Coutts, and manufactured by H Daniel and Co,cemetery masons of Highgate;relief carvings by Signor Facigna.MATERIALS:constructed from Portland stone,with marble and granite dressings and mosaic detail,a red Mansfield stone base and wrought ironwork.DESCRIPTION:the memorial is a tall square shaft in decorated Gothic style,standing on a square plinth and a three-tiered octagonal base.The shaft has angle colonnettes in pink and grey granite,which rise on each side to a trefoil head to a recessed panel with inscriptions in applied lettering.Four tall,richly-moulded gables surround a crocketed spire with corner pinnacles.The SW side faces the entrance to the gardens.The trefoil contains a marble plaque beneath a relief carving of St Pancras with a palm and book,above a marble panel with a two-part inscription:the first is the beatitudes from St Matthew V,3-9 (verses 4 and 5 in reversed order),and the second is a religious poem,the author of which is unknown.In the gable above is an iron sundial,with the words ‘TEMPUS EDAX RERUM’ –time devours all things.The SE and NW sides have relief carvings of Morning,represented by a woman with a cockerel upon her head,and Night,represented by a robed figure with a star and crescent moon. Amongst people commemorated is the Chevalier d'Eon (1728 – 1810) , an 18th century French spy, diplomat and freemason whose gender transition was recognised in French and English law.

For 33 years, from 1777, d'Éon dressed as a woman, claiming to have been female at birth. Doctors who examined d'Éon's body after d'Éon's death discovered that d'Éon would have actually been designated male at birth.

Beloved by the local blues community, Gray's long career included stints performing with Chicago stars Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Junior Wells.

A musician for more than 80 years, Gray performed throughout the United States, Europe and Japan. His festival performances included 39 appearances at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival as well as engagements at the Montreux Jazz Festival, the prominent King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas, and the Chicago and Baton Rouge blues festivals.

“Henry’s music has put smiles on thousands of faces and will continue to enrich us all for many years to come,” said Grammy-winning Baton Rouge blues artist Chris Thomas King.

A Chicago resident from 1946 to 1968, Gray worked with many of the city’s classic blues artists, including Jimmy Reed, Jimmy Rogers, James Cotton and his fellow Louisiana natives Buddy Guy, Little Walter Jacobs and Morris Pejoe.

“To play Henry’s boogie-woogie style, you had to have that left hand like a hammer,” said Rob Payer, the host of blues, rhythm-and-blues and jazz programs at WBRH-FM. “He was also a gentleman, always so sweet and affable.”

Playing blues and rock ’n’ roll standards as well as his original songs, Gray typically performed a mix of joyfully up-tempo selections and heart-wrenching blues. His many honors included the National Endowment for the Arts’ National Heritage Fellowship Award he received in 2006. The Memphis-based Blues Foundation inducted Gray into its Hall of Fame in 2017, the same year it inducted Mavis Staples. In 1998, Gray received a best traditional blues album Grammy nomination for “A Tribute to Howlin’ Wolf.”

Although Gray’s 1998 performance in Paris for Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger’s 55th birthday wasn’t a formal honor, it said much about his place in American music. Playing for the blues-loving British rock stars was a fun gig, Gray said, but the partying Stones wouldn’t let him get any rest.

“Kept me woke four days,” he told The Advocate in 1999. “They can’t sleep and they ain’t go let you sleep — not if they like you. They down to earth, good people, but they just crazy.”

Incidents such as the 1989 tornado strike that destroyed his house in north Baton Rouge and the city bus that crashed into his car in Chicago in 1951 earned Gray his nickname — Lucky Man. He served in the South Pacific during World War II and survived the 2016 flood that affected thousands of Baton Rouge area households. Floodwaters ruined his home, electric piano, clothes and 1994 Ford Crown Victoria. After his rescue by boat, looters stole the safe where Gray stored documents and valuables, including his Grammy-nominee medallion.

Born Jan. 19, 1925, in Kenner, Gray grew up in the East Baton Rouge Parish community of Alsen. A woman in his neighborhood taught him to play blues piano. His religious parents disapproved until his father realized Henry could earn money playing music.

Following his service in the U.S. Army during World War II, Gray returned to Louisiana, but didn’t stay long.

“I don’t pick no cotton, I don’t grow no corn, I don’t plow no mule,” he said. “My daddy put me out there, wanted me to chop corn. I cut my own good foot. I did it on purpose! I picked 60 pounds of cotton in my life, said that was it.”

In 1946, Gray moved to Chicago, a destination city for African Americans who left the South and brought the blues with them. He found a mentor in Big Maceo Merriweather, one of the city’s great piano men. “I was playing some blues, but not like I play now,” Gray said. “He showed me the fundamentals of the blues.”

Gray spent 12 of his 22 years in Chicago playing piano in blues star Howlin’ Wolf’s band.

“I was playing with Little Walter, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed, a boy called Morris Pejoe, Elmore James, Sonny Boy Williamson,” Gray said in 1999. “See, I was playing with all of the big guys. I was making my money, too. I had plenty of work. Every night if I wanted to.”

In 1968, Gray left Wolf’s band and returned to Louisiana. He disputed accounts that Wolf fired him due to his drinking.

“That was over a woman,” Gray insisted. “I walked away. I went back to Baton Rouge. I was just as important as Howlin’ Wolf. That’s the way I felt. He may have been Howlin’ Wolf, but I was Henry Gray.”

In Baton Rouge, Gray worked in his family’s fish market and later as a roofer for the East Baton Rouge Parish school system.

Gray recorded for several record labels, including Chess Records in Chicago, APO, Telarc Blues, Bluebeat, Hightone, Wolf, Blind Pig and Lucky Cat. Three of his recordings are featured on the 1992 MCA box set “Chess Blues.”

In 2004, Gray released the DVD “Henry Gray & the Cats: Live in Paris.” The French audience treated his performance as if it were a classical recital in a world-class concert hall.

“Everywhere I go over there, they love the blues,” Gray said.

Gray is also featured with Dr. John in the Clint Eastwood-directed “Piano Blues,” an episode of the Martin Scorsese-produced 2003 PBS series, “The Blues.”

A songwriter as well as a singer and pianist, Gray’s original songs on his 2009 album, “Times Are Gettin’ Hard,” include “Barack Obama Boogie,” his homage to the first African American president. “He’s my man,” Gray sings. “If he can’t do it, can’t nobody can.”

Gray’s recordings include 2015’s “The Henry Gray/Bob Corritore Sessions, Vol. 1: Blues Won’t Let Me Take My Rest” ‎and 2017’s “92.” Grammy-winning zydeco artist Terrance Simien, co-producer of “92,” met Gray at the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans.

“Just him and his piano,” Simien recalled. “Huge crowds gathered around him every time he played.”

Even while Gray appeared at festivals around the world, he played regularly at the Piccadilly cafeteria on Baton Rouge's Government Street for more than a decade. In his early 90s, Gray gigged at the Time Out Lounge every Tuesday for nearly three years. He refused to stop performing there despite a collapsed lung and a mild heart attack he experienced in quick succession.

Henry gave "it all he can every time,” said Time Out Lounge co-owner Kathleen Byers. “He’s a treasure to me. He should be a treasure to every person in Baton Rouge.”

“I’m going to stay playing my piano,” Gray vowed. “I got to take care of my own business.”

In a 1993 interview, Gray expressed his belief that blues as a musical genre would endure.

“Every person who’s ever been through anything, they’ve gotten the blues,” he said.

The Geography of Partisan Prejudice

In early March, The Atlantic published a guide to the most—and least—politically open-minded counties in America. Amanda Ripley, Rekha Tenjarla, and Angela Y. He teamed up with PredictWise, a polling and analytics firm, to create a ranking of counties in the U.S. based on partisan prejudice (or what researchers call “affective polarization”).

The results were surprising in several ways, they found. “In general, the most politically intolerant Americans, according to the analysis, tend to be whiter, more highly educated, older, more urban, and more partisan themselves.”

In its analysis, PredictWise used multilevel regression with post-stratification (MRP), a method that has lots of promise in estimating public opinion within states from national survey data. However, this method should be used with great care and attention to detail. In particular, the method has been shown to produce estimates that are highly variable when sample sizes are small, as demonstrated in this 2017 paper by Matthew K. Buttice and Benjamin Highton.

In my view, a substantial issue with the methodology is that the sample size used in this study (N=2,000) indeed seems too small to detect real differences in partisan prejudice between states, much less differences between counties. This might explain why levels of partisan prejudice appear to differ so greatly between counties in North Carolina and South Carolina. It seems highly unlikely that partisan prejudices respect the Carolina border in such a way, yet that is exactly what the results suggest. Consider further that if states are sampled in proportion to population, something like 60 North Carolinians were likely included in this sample. That doesn’t seem nearly enough to make any strong claims about the state as a whole, much less the 100 counties the state is comprised of, without making some grand statistical assumptions. Even with a method such as MRP, it’s unlikely there’s enough coverage here to generalize findings to all 3,007 U.S. counties. I’d be interested to see confidence intervals around the estimates of partisan prejudice for both states and counties—I suspect they are quite wide. The data produced here are at best interesting “guesses” derived from small data, and the level of confidence in these results seems largely overstated.

Another thought to consider, mentioned only briefly in the article, is that these results might also be reflective of who is currently in the White House. Educated, white liberals might feel more hostility than usual toward conservatives given Donald Trump’s election, while conservatives might feel more motivated to prove that they are reasonable and fair voters. I wonder whether the findings might have been totally different in 2012 or would be entirely different if this was conducted again in 2021. Certainly, self-reported survey answers should always be interpreted in the context of the environment and time in which the survey was conducted.

Aside from my methodological concerns, I grew up in Davidson County, North Carolina, described in the article as being in the 4th percentile of partisan prejudice. I find this very difficult to believe. Many high-school friends decided to end our friendship when they learned I voted for Barack Obama, despite the fact that I did not end friendships when classmates attempted to convince me that then–Senator Obama was the anti-Christ (You can’t make this stuff up!).

In short, I fear The Atlantic has erred in the publishing of this article. I am sure that the general finding that partisan prejudice is stronger among white, educated liberals on average among U.S. citizens in 2019 is reasonable. But I’m very skeptical that this can be used to draw conclusions about differences in partisan prejudice among states and counties.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful critique. Let me address your methodological concerns first: The study attempts to shed light on a poorly understood phenomenon—political tolerance—and discover how it varies from place to place. We started by asking our respondents 14 survey questions, such as how selfish and patriotic they would rate members of each party and how upset people would be if their offspring married a Democrat or a Republican (full survey here).

We then identified how individual-level demographics (such as education, age, and race) and the mix of our respondents’ neighborhoods relate to political tolerance. In this way, we created neighborhood “profiles” of political tolerance. Then we used a statistical trick: projecting this profile onto a massive data set including roughly 250,000,000 Americans. This large baseline data set, built using commercial voter files, includes millions of combinations of factors and has been carefully curated by PredictWise over the past four years.

This trick prevents us from having to collect survey data in every county in the U.S.—something which would cost well north of $15 million and is therefore unfeasible for news outlets. As you point out, this method (which we call Mr. P) has shown promise in estimating political opinion in smaller geographic areas. In fact, my co-founder David Rothschild and I have extensively published around the methodology in leading academic journals (here, here, and here).

In contrast to what you suggest in your note, however, our model does not attempt to identify state-level dynamics with an insufficient sample size. Instead, our assumption is that counties comprised of residents with similar demographic and neighborhood profiles will perform similarly on our political tolerance scale. In essence, we overcome the traditional limitations of small sample sizes by relying on our massive baseline dataset to identify the range of different neighborhood profiles within and across counties.

Our goal in this undertaking was to combine quantitative methods with qualitative reporting. Ultimately, we tried to find both quantitative and qualitative evidence in support of positions toward the top or bottom of our tolerance scale (examples here).

Yes, there are caveats to this analysis:

Our methods have limits, the most important of which we believe to be the difficulty of counting political partisans at the county level. For example, we want to know how many white, married Republicans over age 55 with a college education happen to live in suburban neighborhoods with a high mix of partisans and different age groups in, say, Wake County, North Carolina. No one knows this exact number. Our large-scale data set on all adult Americans attempts to estimate this number, but it can introduce bias due to the slightly different ways Republicans and Democrats are counted across states (more here).

Our analysis is based on 2018 data, and we absolutely believe results need to be seen within the context of that time. The same is true for any poll or study on dynamic political attitudes.

We might miss county-level peculiarities beyond demographics and composition of neighborhoods, although we do think the data on neighborhood compositions offers a pretty good stand-in for such peculiarities. For example, Americans who live in politically segregated neighborhoods—something our model picks up—are less likely to have politically cross-cutting conversations at the grocery store than Americans who live in politically diverse neighborhoods.

Having access to a combination of novel survey methods, analytics, modern computing, and very large baseline data sets allowed us to take a first crack at mapping the variation in political tolerance, an important (and under-addressed) subject. We hope to have started useful debates around what causes political tolerance and how more tolerance can be cultivated. We believe this is the first step in igniting a virtuous circle of replication, additional data collection, and more analyses, each one getting us closer to the truth.

Time's' Wounds

Chapter 37 Meredith sat under a large tree in her parent͛s garden in Devon. Hamilton͛s ashes were buried beside her under a scots pine she had planted. He loved plants and trees. The roof garden had had slowly died under her care. She just didn͛t have the knack that he had for them. His funeral had been how she had wanted their wedding, small and intimate. The select few they had invited to the wedding were there to mourn him, the priest who had married them had performed the funeral service and been there to comfort her when she had been handed his ashes in a plain rosewood box. She couldn͛t face their flat after the funeral. Her parents had packed everything up and had her things moved to their family home. The sale had gone through last week. She just had to decide what she wanted to do with her life. London held too many painful memories for her to be there anymore. Her boss had been sad to see her go but had understood her reasons and promised a sparkling reference when she needed one. In her listlessness she had wondered into the local museum one day last month, where they were celebrating Jane Austin and her contemporaries and everything Georgian. After sitting through a seminar by a lecturer from the local university she had engaged him in conversation on its subject, ambiguous women in Georgian England. Jane had been mentioned as the disgraced first wife of the Marquis of Stafford. Apparently she had been cast down for infidelity and attacking a family member, she had ended her time in bedlam after the Marquis had had their marriage annulled and her daughter packed off to distant relative to raise. Meredith had thought the lecturer had been badly offended when she had disagreed with his theory that Jane had been treated badly and did not deserve her treatment. Meredith had asked him if his views would change if he discovered she was a manipulative bitch that deserved everything she got. Meredith had not forgotten their friend that Jane had sent to the institution herself. The lecturer had tracked Meredith down a few days later to ask her opinion on another aspect. He had remarked that she was extraordinarily informed about the period. She had smiled and had tea with him in her parent͛s front living room. He had returned almost every day since then to talk to her. ͚Meredith? There͛s a man here to see you.͛ Her father broke into her thoughts. He had been a quiet, steady rock for her since Hamilton had died. Where her mother had clucked and bickered over everything he had quietly handed her a whisky and waited for her to talk, or not as she pleased. He had been the one to find her at all hours of the night sobbing her heart out and screaming about injustice to the sky by Hamilton͛s grave. He had taken her into his arms and let her cry herself into exhaustion and put her back to bed. He stood before her now with a middle aged man in a savile row suit. She pushed herself up from the grassy ground and, brushing her hands on her jeans, shook the man hand. ͚Miss Meredith Lacy?͛ ͚Mrs Hamilton now. I was married three months ago.͛ ͚Many congratulations. I am Jefferson Highton from Smith, Smith and Jones in London.͛ ͚A lawyer? What͛s this about?͛ Her mind reeled. Was there a problem with Hamilton͛s will? It had been very strait forward leaving everything to her. Maybe it was to do with the flat? ͚Well it͛s rather strange madam. We have had these papers in our possession for about two hundred years. It was left with strict instructions that it be delivered at this address on this date into the hands of Miss Meredith Lacy only, by a very important client of ours.͛ ͚May I ask who the client is?' ͚The Earl of Bybrook madam.͛ Meredith stopped breathing. Robert? Robert had left her a letter? But how? He had died before she had left. She had been at the reading of his will, surly anything he had wanted to give her would have been given then. But then Robert had known nothing of where she and the others had come from. He had his suspicions, she knew had had, but he had never discovered the whole. She took the packet the lawyer held out to her. ͚I must admit the firm was curious to see if you actually existed madam. They shall be curious to know how a lady from 1820 would know of you.͛ Meredith could hear the question in his voice but she had no inclination to tell this man her story. ͚A lady you said?͛ ͚Yes madam. The mother and guardian of the duke at the time. I believe he was very young when the title came to him, she managed his affairs until he was twenty one I believe.͛ ͚I see. Well I have no idea. Thank you for delivering it to me. Do I owe you anything for your time?͛ ͚No madam. The current Earl is an extremely generous employer. He shall be disappointed that you could not end his curiosity.͛ The man sounded disappointed for himself as well. She could imagine, he had probably had this curious package waiting patiently in a box since he had started at his firm. She thought he probably was one of the high flyers in the business but had brought it here over junior staff just to satisfy his curiosity. He left her in the garden staring the package. What could Ruth have sent her? It was an ingenious way of getting a message to her. Meredith was just sorry that it only went one way. She could never right back to her friend. Returning to her place next to her husband she broke the seal on the packet and flicked through the package. There were pictures and letters. It was a time capsule of Ruth, Robert, Mary and James. It held details of their lives and their growing families until Ruth͛s death in 1864. They had all lived very happy and full lives. Blinking back tears she pulled a letter at random from the pile of papers before her. My darling Meredith, I got married today. I know me, married? Who knew? But he͛s a good man. He͛s a gentleman down here in Bybrook. He has been very kind to Robert and I. I think I love him but then I thought I loved Nigel and look how that ended. At least this one married me. I͛ll take each day as it comes and live each day like it͛s my last. Robert has grown like a weed. He͛s five now and loves nature. I am constantly finding him and Martin (my husband) down by the pond looking for newts and frogs. Martin is teaching him how to identify trees. They have even started a little herb and vegetable garden. It is such a comfort to see Robert frolicking in the garden, safe and happy. We visited Henri and the Earl this morning. The hydrangea is flourishing and Robert planted a matching plant over Henri to honour the occasion. I miss them sorely especially on days like today. But I feel them with me when I feel I need them. Mary and James had twins last month. A boy and girl, Simon Robert and Henrietta Meredith. They are gorgeous little sprogs and Geoffrey is so protective of them. He lays between their cots and growls at anyone who comes into the room. It really is endearing to see. Like something out of peter pan. Though I can͛t see Geoffrey taking a bonnet and being called nana well. They adopted little Sarah when Jane was taken to bedlam. The poor girl was very quiet and withdrawn when they took her on. The poor dear, I hate to think what negligence Jane forced on the creature. Jane͛s other child went with her to the grave on the occasion of his birth. We placed him next to Robert and Henri. It wasn͛t the child͛s fault his mother was vile. He has a buddleia to watch grow about him and love from heaven. There is not a day goes by that we don͛t miss you and Hamilton. Mary and I get together sometimes and hope that you made it home. James was devastated that he did not get to you both before those ruffians threw you into the river. He dived in after you but could not find you. He still askes the constables if they have any word of you but I think he had come to the conclusion that you and Hamilton are gone. He brought us all to his family home near Bristol for a memorial service. It was beautiful. Hamilton͛s brother brought a couple of seeds from Hamilton͛s garden and planted them. Mary told me she entwined them when they sprouted. I hope this finds you both well and happy. I imagine that Hamilton eventually got his way and made you his wife though every time I imagine your wedding it͛s different. It just doesn͛t seem right that Mary and I are not there to fuss over you and get riotously drunk at the after party and embarrass you for your big day. I hope you know that wherever we are now we were with you on your happiest day. Never forget us as we will never forget get you. All my love in friendship Ruth. Meredith was dry eyed as she read the letter through again. She hadn͛t realised how hungry for news she had been of her friends. She was glad that little Sarah had gone to Mary and James. The couple had an unending capacity to love. She flicked through the documents before her and found an old picture, a photograph of an aging Mary and James surrounded by a large group of people. Meredith realised they were their children and grandchildren. By the looks of it Mary and James had had five children, Sarah and at the time of the picture, 1860, seven grandchildren. There was a similar picture of Ruth with a man she assumed was Martin, a tall strapping man that looked like Ruth͛s dad must be Robert. Ruth had had three other children, a boy and two girls, they all looked happy and healthy. Giving Hamilton a pat and gathering the papers she returned to her parent͛s Tudor house. They had given her a number of rooms on one side of the building. The room she used as a sitting room was dominated by a huge inglenook fireplace with a blown up photo of her and Hamilton when they had been out in the park one day. He was hugging her, his bright green eyes crinkled in laughter while she nuzzled his cheek, a look of amused adoration in her eyes. Walking over to her desk she rifled through the draws until she found what she was looking for. Two large but old fashioned frames. She slipped the pictures of Ruth and Mary into each and hung them either side of her wedding picture with Hamilton. Standing back she admired her work. Seeing her friends so happy she made a decision. She couldn͛t go on living in the past. She would not forget it, the past had made her but she had to move on or fade away.
