The goal was not actually building a legendary landmark sports car. William Lyons’ SS cars had built the rapid SS 90 & 100 sports cars until 1940, but by 1945 Lyons was more interested in fast luxury sedans. Up to that time, SS/Jaguar had used engines, stock or modified, from Coventry’s Standard Motor Co. Standard’s engines did the job and were ultimately brought in-house, but Lyon’s had loftier goals - a 100mph sedan (very rare in those days) powered by engines #Jaguar designed. - As hostilities wound down, Lyons’ team, Walter Hassan, Bill Heynes, Harry Weslake & co., began working on Jaguar’s own engine - which became the famous twin-cam XK. Before the XK was installed in the company’s new MkV sedan (the company’s main product and first postwar design), Lyons and Co. decided it needed more production testing - hence the company designed the XK120, using some components from the MkIV, as a limited-run roadster to showcase it. - Both the 120 and the MkV debuted at the London show in 1948 - the MkV, still powered by the old Standard-derived six, was very nice and a big seller, but the XK120 was a bona fide superstar - too good to be a 200-car run; which meant considerable work to get it ready for volume production. - At first, the #XK120 was only a roadster. The car proved very popular - but especially so in America - 80+% of XK120s went to the states, where they cost $4K to start, a huge amount of money in 1949, but worth every cent to people who wanted to be as chic as Clark Gable. When the Attlee Govenrment devalued the Pound that September as part of the Breton Woods agreement (among many factors), the profit margins on exported XK120s soared. What Americans wanted from Jaguar, they’d get, and they wanted a coupe. - The FHC (Fixed-head coupe) arrived in 1951, just as the MkVII, Lyons’ XK-powered super sedan, was coming on line. Two years later it was joined by a four-place convertible (the Drophead coupe). The coupe added a great deal of civility to the XK, which was already a sports car that was relatively easy to live with - as good at 10mph as 100. The FHC turned the roadster into a continent-eating GT, quiet and contained but just as potent. https://www.instagram.com/oldmotors/p/BxAV33Vlndf/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ct8o68hhpr7v

Is the rarest Jaguar ever made coming to Pebble Beach?
One of the all-time great Jaguar cars is the XK120. Over 12,000 examples were built between 1948 and 1954. With the 3.4-liter straight-six engine under the hood, an XK120 could reach a top speed of nearly 125 miles per hour. They were offered as roadsters, drophead coupes, and fixed-head coupes as well. There's one version, however, that's been... from PerformanceJunk Feed http://ift.tt/2uovOmi via IFTTT from PerformanceJunk Feed http://ift.tt/2wtekXl via IFTTT from PerformanceJunk Feed http://ift.tt/2fsyJHV via IFTTT from PerformanceJunk Feed http://ift.tt/2up5lVK via IFTTT from PerformanceJunk Feed http://ift.tt/2wtRwqb via IFTTT from PerformanceJunk Feed http://ift.tt/2vjbCFl via IFTTT from Performance Junk Blogger Feed 4 http://ift.tt/2hKAi4Q via IFTTT
