Todo lo bien que se me da expresarme cuando compongo canciones y cuando me toca hablar de mí... no sé, me faltan las palabras. A ver por dónde empiezo. Supongo que diciendo que voy a cumplir cuarenta y tres años (aunque no los aparento) y que soy nativo de Hawaii. Y por nativo me refiero a nacido y criado allí. El mar y el viento de las islas corre por mis venas. (Al final sí que voy a tener creatividad.)

Me crie con mi hermana en una pequeña casa con nuestros padres y abuelos. Venimos de familia de pescadores así que no es que nos sobrara el dinero, pero estábamos siempre en comunión con la naturaleza algo que nunca me cansaré de agradecerle a mi padre por haberme educado así.

A pesar de que para mí la familia y la isla lo son todo, tuve una época en la que quise ver mundo. Mi pasión desde pequeño siempre ha sido la música y, con el tiempo, conseguí que fuera algo más que una pasión y que me diera de comer.

Durante unos años estuve de gira con mi grupo y no nos iba mal. Me escapaba siempre que podía a casa pero admito que la vida en la carretera, sexo, las fiestas... era muy tentadora. Hasta que una llamada de teléfono me devolvió a la realidad. Mis padres salieron a faenar y una tormenta hundió su barco. Mis abuelos hacía algunos años que habían muerto y ahora solo estábamos mi hermana y yo.

Cambié de vida radicalmente. Dejé el grupo, aunque seguía (y sigo) componiendo y ayudé a mi hermana a abrir una tienda. Entre eso y lo que sacaba con las canciones nos íbamos manteniendo.

Mi hermana se casó, tuvo un niño, se divorció y el tiempo fue pasando hasta que conocí a Martika. Aquí tengo que decir que soy bisexual y sí, la mayor parte de mis relaciones han sido con hombres (especialmente durante mi época de giras) pero cuando vi a Martika caí de rodillas como un gilipollas. Después me desilusioné, ella no era lo que me esperaba y mucho menos después de que naciera nuestro hijo y se largara diciendo que no estaba preparada para ser madre. Bueno, tampoco es que la necesitemos, Bode tiene todo el amor que necesita de su familia.

Desde entonces no he tenido ninguna relación seria. En la zona en la que vivimos tener ese tipo de relaciones sigue siendo tabú y, para que mentir, mi hijo me quita todo mi tiempo libre. Y no es una queja, conste, es lo que más quiero en el mundo.

Y me parte el alma tener que dejarlo pero me ha salido una oportunidad que no puedo rechazar. Me voy a Nueva York a componer para una discográfica importante. No sé para cuanto tiempo voy pero sí que sé que es el suficiente como para meterme de okupa en la casa de mi sobrino y ponerme a buscar apartamento para traerme a mi hijo conmigo.

Eso sí, las aerolíneas que hagan vuelos a Hawaii se van a hacer de oro conmigo.

Beach Day in Ebrimel (Kenna x Raydan)

Prompt: Round 40 of #ChoicesCreates: Summer, hosted by @dopecatcollins and @laurentthings

Summary: Kenna and Raydan spend a day at the beach with their family and friends.

Summer was the perfect time for a family vacation. Kenna and Raydan and their family had traveled to Panrion, along with Jackson. Although relations were peaceful among the kingdoms, it was always necessary to take precautions, especially since they were traveling with their children. They met up with Kailani and Noa, who told them about a secluded beach on the coast of Ebrimel. It sounded like an ideal place to relax and enjoy the sea, sun, sand, and scenery, so they decided to head over there. Before long, the airship had landed, and they began walking towards the shoreline.

It was a warm, sunny day. Gulls and terns flocked on the beach and soared overhead.  As she heard the sound of the waves gently crashing on the sand, Kenna started to feel more relaxed. The group found a spot not too far from the water, and Kenna began to lay down cloths.   

"Come on, let's go in the water!"

Kenna looked up and saw her daughter Adelia running toward the ocean, followed by her son Adrian.

"Wait, you need sunscreen first!" Kenna told her children. As they headed over to her, she took out a jar of lotion made of chopped iris roots which had been boiled in white wine. After she had applied sunscreen to all of her children, Raydan took the container from her.

"You need some too, my love." Raydan dipped his fingers into the lotion and began rubbing it into Kenna's skin. His touch felt so good. When he had finished, she took the jar and began to return the favor. She massaged the sunscreen into him, covering his exposed skin with it.

Once she was done, she put the jar away, then turned to him and smiled. "We may need to put more on later."

Raydan grinned back. "Yes, you can't be too careful."

While the children played, Kenna and Raydan lay on the beach with Noa and Kailani. After his trip to Stormholt without Kailani, Noa had become one of their dearest friends. Kenna was glad that their families had been able to take the trip together. It was good for Noa's little boy, Koa, to be around other children. Noa's wife had died when Koa was young. Fortunately, Kailani was helping to raise her nephew. Jackson remained vigilant; although there was no sign of anyone else, there was always a chance that enemies were lurking nearby.

Suddenly Kenna heard shouting. She sat up and saw that Koa and her younger daughters Gabrielle and Marcelline were arguing with her younger son Leonidas. She hurried over to them to find out what was going on.

"Leo knocked over our sand castle!" Marcelline whimpered.

"I'm a warrior king! I'm taking over!" Leonidas shouted.

Kenna turned to her young son. "Leo, you can't do that. It's not nice to destroy others' things." She led him away from the others and went back over to Raydan, Noa, and Kailani. Gabrielle, Marcelline, and Koa began to rebuild their sand castle. Kenna was pleased to see that Marcelline seemed to be feeling better. She was a sensitive child.

A while later, Kenna and Raydan strolled along the shoreline. Adelia ran over to them. "Look what I found!" She held out several shells.

"Those are pretty!" Kenna said.

"Can you hold them for me? I want to go back in the water."

"Of course," she told her daughter. Adelia went to join Adrian, who was still swimming.

Raydan bent down to pick up a red scallop shell. "This is a nice one." He reached for something else. "I found something for you too."

Kenna's eyes widened as Raydan held out his hand, revealing a small pearl. "What a find!"

"Indeed. I should have it made into a piece of jewelry for you. A necklace, a bracelet, a ring, whatever you prefer."

"That sounds lovely." She smiled.

Raydan looked at her tenderly. "You deserve the best."

She pulled him close and kissed him. "I already have the best."

What if the characters from The Crown and the Flame formed a power metal band?

Prompt: Round 21 of #ChoicesCreates: “What if...?”

This prompt reminded me of an idea that Queenie Lune and I discussed on one of the Choices Facebook groups. After I posted an image of Azura's album Ride the Lightning (based on the Metallica album of the same name), she said that she had thought about the hot long-haired guys from The Crown and the Flame forming a power metal band. I loved the idea and we discussed who should be in the band. I then created images of their debut album (front cover and back cover with the track listing). I called the band Warriors of Stormholt, and when she saw the images, she said she had thought of the same name for the band. This piece expands on the idea.

"You're on in ten minutes! Is everyone ready?" Whitlock looked around. "Hey, where's Raydan?"

"Probably off in the shadows somewhere," Kenna said. "He'll make it in time."

"Fancy Man said something about wanting to save his voice for the show." Val turned to Kenna. "Do we need him? You could sing everything."

"Of course we need him, Val! The songs wouldn't sound the same without him. And people would know, right, Whitlock?"

"Yes, thanks to my new technology. I made lots of those listening devices, and people will be able to buy them, along with copies of the album you recorded with more of my inventions."

Jackson began walking toward the stage. "Let's head out." As Noa, Tevan, and Val began to follow him, Raydan emerged and walked over to Kenna.

The wolf pup ran out in front of the curtains. "Presenting the Warriors of Stormholt!"

The curtains parted, and Tevan began to play the keyboard introduction. Noa came in on guitar not long afterward, and Jackson joined in on bass. Val started beating on the drums. Dom and Sei stood on opposite sides of the stage, just out of sight.

As flames shot up into the air, Raydan and Kenna came out and took their places in the front, and the band began to perform their opening song, "Bite of the Black Asp."

In the alleys of Abanthus Waiting to strike Beware the bite of the black asp There's nowhere you can run Nowhere you can hide You are always within its grasp

They followed with "Broken Alliance" and "In the Shadows." Then Raydan spoke to the audience. "Thank you!" The crowd cheered. "Remember, what you think is reality may just be an illusion!" As they began "Illusion of Betrayal," Val focused her energy on the drums and tried not to think too much about the lyrics. Kenna and Raydan alternated on vocals, telling both sides of the story.

At the end of the next song, "Mechataur," most of the band exited the stage, and Noa began his guitar solo. After several minutes, the others returned, and they played "The Fire Inside."

Once again, Raydan addressed the crowd. "We're glad to be here with you tonight in Stormholt. We're heading back out on the road tomorrow, but tonight I am yours!" The band then segued into the power ballad "Tonight I Am Yours."

After performing "Never Surrender," Kenna and Raydan called out to the crowd, "Thank you! Good night!" They walked off the stage, and the crowd began chanting "Warriors of Stormholt!"

A few minutes later, Noa, Jackson, Tevan, and Val returned to the stage and began playing "Riding the Dragon." Dom flew out in dragon form, with Kenna on top of him, and Sei flew out with Raydan. Kenna and Raydan sang as the dragons flew above the audience, sometimes swooping down near the fans. As the song ended, they flew back to the stage, and Kenna and Raydan dismounted. Noa threw guitar picks into the audience, and Val tossed her drumsticks. As the crowd cheered, the band lined up and bowed, and then exited the stage.

After the equipment had been packed up, everyone enjoyed the afterparty, with plenty of wine and ale.

Semi-Royal Wedding (TRR/TC&TF Crossover)

Summary: Bastien and Mara talk about Riley and Drake’s upcoming wedding and about their ancestors’ wedding centuries earlier.

Author’s note: The modern-day scenes are a follow-up to Changing of the Guard, and the medieval scene is a follow-up to Part 6  of  Shadow of the Crown.

The ball was coming to an end, and the guests were departing. Bastien watched Riley and Drake walk out together, hand in hand.

"They make a nice couple, don't they?"

Bastien looked to Mara as she approached. "They seem happy."

"Definitely." Mara moved closer and stood beside Bastien. "What a love story theirs is! She was a commoner and now she's nobility, and soon he'll be nobility too. And their wedding is going to be a big event. I bet nothing like that has ever happened before."

"Well, actually, something a bit like that did happen, centuries ago. Remember how I told you that we're descended from Queen Kenna and King Raydan?" As Mara nodded, Bastien continued. "Their grandson Julien Landais, the illegitimate son of their son Adrian, technically wasn't royalty. He was a bodyguard for his cousin Gabriel Drammir, who was also the grandson of King Tevan and Queen Zenobia. But when he got married, royals came from all over the Five Kingdoms. Commoner or not, he was the grandson of Kenna Rys. They got married right here in Fydelia. Well, it was Fydoria back then."

The wedding guests gathered inside Fydoria's castle. Kenna sat beside Raydan, feeling emotional. Soon their grandson would be a married man. It had only been a couple of years since they had learned of his existence and welcomed him into the family, and now they were gaining a new family member.

Julien stood at the front of the room, with Adrian by his side. Seeing them next to each other, Kenna was struck by the resemblance between them. Julien's hair was shorter and not quite as dark, but otherwise they looked very much alike. And Adrian looked so much like Raydan.

Julien's bride, Susanna Ward, began to walk to the front of the room, accompanied by her father Edwin, one of Tevan and Zenobia's guards. She wore an exquisite white dress that looked fit for royalty, and an amethyst and sapphire necklace that Kenna had given her as a wedding gift, to symbolize both Fydoria and Stormholt. When Susanna reached Julien's side, they gazed lovingly into each other's eyes.

Jackson had come from Stormholt to perform the ceremony. In addition to marrying Kenna and Raydan, he had also married most of their children to their spouses.  It had become a family tradition. Only their youngest, Leonidas, had been married by someone else, since he had married in Ducitora. He began to speak the words he had said so many times before. "We gather here today to join these two souls in sacred covenant, and pay witness to their vows."

Julien and Susanna pledged their love to each other, and once Jackson pronounced their union, they kissed passionately. When they finally broke apart, they turned to face the guests, joined hands, and began to walk towards the castle door. Everyone headed out to the Fydorian gardens for the reception. 

A large number of guests had come from all over. Of course, many of them were family. Kenna and Raydan's five children were all there with their spouses and children. Their daughter Adelia had married Zenon Drammir, son of Tevan and Zenobia, and Julien worked for them, so the Fydorian royal family had been happy to host the wedding. Adrian had married Claudius Umad III's daughter Ciara. Ciara's family was present too; after all, Julien was Ciara's stepson and the half-brother of her children. Their daughter Gabrielle had married King Diavolos' son Damianos, and the rest of the Nevrakis family had come with them. Their daughter Marcelline had married Koa Keawe, son of Noa, and his family was also there. Even Leonidas' father-in-law, Jorrin Kal, was there, since Lia and Whitlock had come. Adder had come from Lykos for her great-nephew's wedding. Many of their other longtime friends were in attendance: Dom, Sei, Annelyse, Val, and others. Naturally, Susanna's family and friends and all the Fydorian guards were there.

Kenna and Raydan made their way over to the newlyweds. Kenna hugged Julien, then turned to Susanna. "Welcome to the family."

Susanna smiled. "Thank you, Queen Kenna."

"You don't need to be so formal. You're one of us." Kenna gave Susanna a hug.

"Interesting," Mara said. "A bodyguard's wedding was practically a royal affair. Could you imagine one of us having a wedding like that?"

At those words, Bastien wondered what might have happened if Drake hadn't proposed to Riley. Would she have eventually made a different choice? Could they have ended up together? Bastien had never really expected to have a future with her, but as they had grown closer, his feelings had deepened. Since both Liam and Drake loved her, he didn't dare express his feelings openly, but if the time ever came when they were both over her, maybe he would have a chance. He knew she felt something for him. Maybe she still did.

"Bastien? You OK?" Mara looked to him.

"My leg hurts." Although it was true, it was also a convenient excuse. "I should get some rest."

She nodded. "It's late anyway. Good night."

They parted ways, and soon Bastien was asleep, dreaming of Riley.
