Almost no one could afford a full summer. Sessions were two weeks. If you were sent for the full summer, it kind of meant your family couldn’t even handle you, or vice versa. There were some kids who got in from 'scholarships' (I guess?) for 3 sessions. Session 0 was 1 week. We did session 0 3 times. I was placed in a bunk full of girls a grade above me the first and last years I went.
I was there for the last time they called the end of session show 'lip-sync' before they had to rebrand it 'talent show' (which ruined it a little) because someone got an 'unfortunate view' when one of the boys cabin's performed gay bar in boxers. I learned stage magic one year. Failed to learn to sing another. 'Dated' a boy with the same first name as myself. Tried weed, did not get high, felt guilty later. Sucked at befriending girls my age and not (but I did that at home too). Won a hot dog eating contest. Won lip-sync twice (thanks Molly). Enjoyed rock climbing/zipline, cried on the zipline, enjoyed the zipline again (don't look down). Was in some plays. AND SANDWICHES (inside joke) Sang baby got back and get low so much at such young ages that the patriarchy became more powerful. Broke a gameboy advance sp with hubris.
There were fair bunk chore rotations we had to complete daily, evening activities called Evac (Mykee Fowlin came at least 2x when I was there over the years), a letter meal each week, we had to use phone cards to use on site phones to call home, a canteen with a nightly allowance of one candy/chips, one soft drink, age-based curfews, and later curfew rewards for winning evac and other events and games.
A supposed punishment for bad conduct that I never heard of or saw actually dispensed was running hills before dawn/wake up (till you puked supposedly) everyone always just got docked curfew in my experience. Wake up call was performed by two counselors (or CITs) of the same gender of your cabin every morning that would go through all the cabins with pots and pans shouting wake up G(bunk number). You could usually hear them next door before they arrived. I assume the boys got the same. Different counselors (or CITs) would be in charge of this each morning.
It's home to one of my favorite places in the world. It wasn't the skate park or the circus. (Circus and trapeze were separate, fyi) There were horses and go-karts.
Working there was probably a human rights violation. That would be 8 weeks. I never did that shit. Never stayed more than 3 weeks. Never became a CIT (half price, had to stay a month+ and babysit boo).
