OCTOPUSES MY LOVES

To start, octopuses are cephalopods which literally means "head-foot." Someone looked at these things and was like, "well it has a head and it has feet but no torso. What do we call it? HEAD FOOT" which i love. ALSO, cephalopods edit their rna more than any other class of animal that we know of.

If you don't know, rna is the molecule that actually translates what's in our dna into proteins that the body can use to do stuff. Octopuses edit their rna to change an amino acid in the protein in 11-13% of their genese compared to mammal's 1%. What this means practically is that cephalopods can adapt to changes to their environment relatively quickly without altering their genome.

Octopuses are also weird because the majority of their neurons aren't in their brain!!! 2/3 of them are in their arms!! Which means, they can move their arms semi-independently of their brain. They have chemical receptors along their limbs, allowing them to taste/smell things in the water with them, which guides their movements. What's interesting about that is that it only really works well in water- when they're in air those receptors aren't anywhere near as effective. So while they can technically still move on their own, the arms would be flying blind. Meaning that when they're underwater, an octopus will let its arms move around on their own, but anytime they're above water they need to use sight to guide themself.

Also, fun fact, an octopus's arms aren't technically tentacles- they're called pseudopods! Tentacles are appendages with a single sucker at the end of it, and pseudopods are appendages with suckers running all along it. Since octopuses have suckers all along their limbs, they are pseudopods.
