There’s sth so fascinating to me about how Mathieu and Wout seem to be really chill and friendly and chatty with each other during the tour de france and then their usual slightly tense slightly awkward and rivalry-minded selves every other time of the year. Seasonal rivalry

#like. in the winter there’s CX then the classics. after the tour comes the world champs etc. but during the tour? they’re just chilling :)#like there’s sth soooooo fascinating to me !!!!! about it #because Mathieu often is there as a lead-out and wout obviously is super-domestique and yes they have their own ambitions #wout more-so than Mathieu #but still. they’re just kinda in service of the team for once. and so it’s like wait. we don’t have to hate each other rn we can just do ou #job in the team and it’s kinda funny because they’re both doing that and then they will so often either chat at the start of races #or even go on little two-man-breakways 😇🥰 just do their own little thing for no reason other than that they want to #I’m always asking myself what their teams think during that. like ah okay yeah Mathieu Wout breakway again. there’s no tactical or other #reason for this but we gotta let them do this at least once per tour it’s just. what they do #and they both have enough of a standing within the team that they can’t really say no maybe so it’s like. sure. go on an adventure with #your buddy just be back for dinner (sprint lead-out Jasper for mathieu / delivering Jonas to the bottom of a climb with either no #one or just pog in the wheel for wout)#sorry for the long ass tags #mathieu van der poel #wout van aert
