Fionna and Cake spoilers
so it’s been approximately 9 hours since I’ve watched the finale and after hours of trying to understand where my disappointment was coming from, I think I finally figured it out
you see, I grew up with Adventure Time. and when I mean growing up I mean like really growing up. I was 6 when it first aired and I was 14 when it’s last episode aired, and I missed no episode in between. I was a hardcore fan, like reallllyyyy and as a neurodivergent kid, that show was hella important for me.
one of my specific hyperfixation about the show was the Fionna and Cake universe, and after buying every comic I could find of them, all the little things and character traits that made F&C’s characters different from the og version had made me love all those characters
for me they were never just a copy of the og universe and I was thrilled everytime I bought a new comic to follow their little adventure
so, when the show’s been announced in 2021 I was hyped, VERY hyped.
and, let’s put it like that : when they showed the characters in a human au I was… worried ? maybe disappointed ? but when the episodes finally aired I found them so freaking good that I didn’t mind, ESPECIALLY since they were on an adventure to try finding a way to bring back magic into their world.
and I was waiting til the last episode to actually see that. which never happened.
don’t get me wrong, I love these versions of Fionna and Cake, the gumlee coffee shop au etc etc… but as a fan of the og comics I wanted to see that universe being developed because of how interesting it could have been.
what made me like the characters in the comics were highly connected to their magical world, and I think I’ve had too much hope that it would maybe come back to that in the series.
so yeah, I guess as a fan of the og F&C universe, I was disappointed, sadly disappointed, like you are when you waited years for something. I’m just sad to be honest.
it’s of course very subjective and isn’t an objective critic of the finale (you can find plenty of them on tumblr and x) but yeah, thought I would share that to see if other people were feeling like this after the finale.

sooo
-jay and little destiny left behind bonnie and jays siblings right after their father possibly died
-golbetty couldve eaten simon and he wouldve thanked her and had his wish to be with her forever granted but nope he gets to be PATHOLOGIZED! dont worry simon, your problem has a NAME and its CODEPENDENCY. phew, sure am glad that thorny, complicated topic gets wrapped up nice and neat! be sure to pick up a copy of "the body keeps the score" on the way out, simon. (no shame against that book but the things people assume after reading it are wild and labelling a relationship that has some small flaws as toxically codependent to the point of breakup is one of them)
-fionna gets to get told WHATS WHAT about how STUPID she is for wishing magic was real. just picket and play roller derby like a normal girl, its not like the world needs to REALLY change... changing it might risk what you have! and you APPRECIATE what you have, right fionna? need to watch your friends die some more so that you accept wage slavery america as the pinnacle of existence? you should be sorry for thinking it was so boring, thats not very self care of you fionna
-oh but cake gets to stay. because uhhh. idk. it would be fucked up to have a detransition narrative, i guess? and shes not a 20-something who needs to grow up. i guess we cant accidentally teach our audience to become stretchy cats, so its fine, its not teaching them anything bad! but fionna being magical, now THAT would send the wrong message
- every other couple gets to have romantic/imperfect/codependent moments-- gary sacrifices his WHOLE DREAM for marshall. but the writers know its not very 2023 of them to make the gays more problematic than just. having some psychosexual violence thrown in there for spice. but simon and betty? sorry you werent perfect and she dont want you no more
-any romance that ends with "i am willingly breaking it off with you even though we could be together" needs to work HARD for that to satisfy. golbetty couldve eaten simon and he wouldve thanked her. blowing him off into the world IS DISREGARDING HIS WISHES! it just feels like they imposed Recovery Aesthetic onto simon and fionna and were like see :) Happee Ending! dont look at all the loose threads, simon went to THERAPY! zoomers love when old men go to therapy, right?? simon and betty's issues werent wrestled hard, long, and to the ground enough on-screen to sell that she doesnt want him anymore and that that truly is the best ending she can bring with her ultimate power, it reads that golbetty truly did override betty's self and changed her into an unrecognizeable figure. its so stupid that adding a little bit of pathologizing therapy talk can make people say this was good.
and codependency IS pathologizing. how much dependency is healthy, at what point does it tip into being too toxic to save? that depends on which therapist youre talking to. humans are wired for connection, no amount of CBT and DBT will make you not mourn losing a connection, and the pain of that loss shouldnt be used as evidence that you should just be less attached. simon isnt a mind reader, and betty made her choices. you can call it a "fawn response" but that still implies that you think she was unfit for autonomy. if she really doesnt regret those choices, why doesnt she want to be with simon? that question is not answered well enough to leave it not feeling like a swerve for audience members who arent projecting their own codependent experiences onto betty. the text alone doesnt support it enough for that to ring true, not when they only actually delved into the topic for about 5-10 onscreen minutes. Not to mention the fact that the ending ends with a fucking montage where it looks like simon just turned happy and is living his dream of cheers sitcom life. is that really better than becoming one with your beloved crazy wife forever? is that actually more realistic, in the visceral emotional language that stories speak? is it a more satisfying ending, getting 80% there and then saying "actually this dramatic cool story has some Problematic Elements, I'm going home"?
i wish they gave her more lines. they couldve given her more lines, made simon talking at the audience into a real conversation, and they didnt. there were so many things they couldve done and it ended up at something just as toxic as whatever codependency they were railing against, the idea that the relationship we were shown was too toxic and flawed and that betty was clearly fawning for simon and not capable of making her own decisions while simon shouldve stepped up and fixed that for her. they want to play it like "we must go our separate ways" but there's no must. this is still a choice betty is making, to break up with simon for good, and that choice was always gonna be a hard sell but not even letting betty have more than a few lines about it? how do you expect to sell such a big emotional shift? therapy speak, apparently.
and they seriously played the "simon goes back to his life" card WITHOUT a marcy scene??? lazy heroes journey shit.

Before I see even more posts and comments talking about the Fionna and Cake finale, I wanna write down my initial impressions before I see too much more analysis. I watched the episodes last night right before going to sleep, but now it’s the morning for me so I may not remember everything as exactly but it’s still relatively fresh.
Overall, I did enjoy both episode 9 and 10, the show in general was quite enjoyable. I did feel like the ending was underwhelming when I had just watched it, but on further thought, I think it did wrap up satisfyingly.
I think I might have just had the wrong expectations going in. I recall seeing a post that said something to the effect of “Tom Kenny said episode 9 was the most emotional thing he’s ever recorded.” When watching the last 2 episodes though, I kept waiting for a really emotional moment, although it never came. I don’t know if I had misremembered what the quote from Tom Kenny was or maybe it was a bullshit quote or what, but I think I setup the wrong expectations for the episode.
Also, just in general I haven’t watched that many currently ongoing shows that don’t dump whole seasons at a time for a while. So when someone like Fionna and Cake comes along where I’m actually excited each week for a new pair of episodes, I’m not very used to tempering my expectations. I don’t think I hyped myself that much though.
Anyways, to the actual ending, here’s my thoughts for Simon and Fionna + Cake separately.
For Simon, I think just a bit more time to connect everything together at the end would’ve been nice, but I think I enjoyed it a lot overall. Betty really hammered in that Simon fucked up a lot by leading him to the Casper and Nova story. For a man who already hate himself a lot and has been planning to essentially “kill” the Simon part of himself via wearing the crown, it’s a strange thing for Betty to hammer in his mistakes. I think it works though with what Betty follows it up with.
Even after all the mistakes and pain in their relationship with Betty being GOLB now, she still enjoys her memories of Simon. She values him and doesn’t let him put on the crown. She also helps save Fionna and Cake’s world, thereby making any decision with the crown just for himself.
So Simon essentially gets to ask himself if he’s worthwhile. Does his life matter? Even with all the mistakes he’s made throughout his life though, the answer is yes. He’s not a perfect father for Marceline, but he got to see the alternative of him not being around. We also only got a little bit of Marceline in episode 2, but what we did see was her happy. Then there’s Betty who, despite everything, still cared for him and valued him. Then of course there’s Fionna and Cake who spend most of the show warming up to and caring for Simon. Also want to mention that while their bond isn’t great, Finn does also care for Simon and tries to help him out.
Simon starts off the show hating his life. By the end though, I think they came to a satisfying way for Simon to care for himself.
Then there’s Fionna and Cake. I do think their situation does parallel some of Simon’s stuff. Similar to how Simon feels, they’re all “mistakes,” especially Fionna. We start off seeing her struggles to keep a job and find happiness in her life. Then there’s the fact that her and Cake spend most of the show being chased by some god-like bug guy who wants to annihilate for being a “mistake.”
We also see them make mistakes in their journey to find the crown. Like the whole “attacking innocent candy people” thing definitely isn’t very great. Or them just watching BMO kill themselves. They also didn’t do great in helping the war against Vampires.
Despite their mistakes and flaws however with both themselves and their world, by the end, they still chose to stick by their world and make the most of it. Fionna and Cake have had each other the whole way through and they’ve made friends along the way in life like Gary and Simon.
My main problem is that I don’t feel like they did enough to show why Fionna and Cake still want to live in their normal world. While Fionna I think did have moments of “hey, I don’t think this whole magic and adventure thing is really for me,” I don’t feel like they focused that much on her alternative of living in her current world. That is until the very end of the show at which point, it felt rushed.
Edit: Thinking about it more, I do think there was quite a bit of Fionna and Cake realizing that a “magical world” isn’t the perfect solution to their problem. It wasn’t just a few moments of Fionna going “oh maybe this isn’t great.”
As much as I enjoyed seeing Marshall and Gary’s romance unfold, I think it could’ve helped to show flashbacks of Fionna and Cake instead. Those segments did help me get invested in their world and a lot of the show already helped make me invested in Fionna and Cake, but I didn’t feel invested in them being in their own world. So I think having flashbacks for Fionna and Cake instead would’ve helped connect them back to their world more to setup the finale better, while still taking the time to make us care for the world in general.
Anyways, I liked the show overall. I did enjoy the stories both overall and episode-by-episode. There was also some good laughs in there and I thought the presentation was really great. I remember first hearing about this show and not really being that interested as despite having watched all of Adventure Time (especially a lot when growing up), I felt content with what we had. So I’m somewhat surprised by how into Fionna and Cake I got. On the other hand though, I did wear a Jake hat for fucking years in elementary school partly because I loved Adventure Time so much so I guess it shouldn’t be that surprising.

now do it again with adventure time and its related medias
Tumblr media
You don't know what you're doing to me yOU KNOW I JUST FINISHED THAT SHOW YOU ASSHOLE !!!
Fuck, I don't even know where to start with it really, it hasn't festered in my brain long enough to accumulate the agressive love that I have for things like the M(arkiplier)CU and Eddsworld, but truly it's getting there
It's one of those shows I went into thinking "I'm gonna watch this so I know what's happening in Fionna and Cake :3" and came out of it actually crying over the finale that shit was so good
The show was NOT a kids show and I don't at all regret waiting until now that I'm an adult to watch it, it handles topics surprisingly very seriously, like the idea of finding out who you are as a person and what it means to be alive in a world we don't actually understand
Watching that show I thought Marceline and Bubblegum was a last minute thing the show runners thought of with how it was framed to me when their kiss happened in the finale, how I was told about it was from people with homophobic values and incel like behavior but at the time I didn't think of it as anything to write home about, I saw it as just another show trying to have last minute queer representation, a rushed "THEY WERE GAY THE WHOLE TIME!" moment
But watching the show, seeing their first interaction together, truly it clicked that it WAS planned from the beginning, the way that PB had explained that yeah ofc she kept Marcy's shirt, it meant a lot to her, the way that up until that point and even way after, they haven't blushed at anyone else - maybe embarassing things, but not something sweet and meaningful like that, only to each other
And when I learned about Finn having a crush on PB it was, again, before I watched the show from people who were young at the time and naive, explaining it as their OTP or "a really cute will they won't they" and watching the show, seeing how it was explicitly said that PB was too old for Finn, how PB never lead him on or even tried to give him the impression she was into him, just Finn being a kid and having a crush cause he likes women and is friends with one, trying to figure out how hormones works as he goes through puberty, it's crazy I love how the show handles relationships
Like Flame Princess and Finn's relationship - WOW, like actually WOW, I vaguely remember watching some episodes of Adventure Time in my youth but nothing substantial, like I watched some from the first few seasons and then I remember hearing and seeing talk of FP and Finn's breakup and the aftermath of it, but not much of it actually happening, and last thing I remember is the "Elemental" arc and being really intruiged by it but never being able to watch it
But the way Finn later properly apologized to FP ? How he feels guilty all the way up until FP forgives Finn for properly apologzing ? That was so rewarding to watch, the writers really care about it's characters, it truly shows
But, I also wanna infodump about what I'd mentioned in my tags of the Markiplier rant, how I made the connection between The Cask of Amontillado and Season 9, Episode 14 of Adventure Time, because I think that was one of my biggest brain moments I've had in a while
I'm too lazy to rewrite it all out though having just written TEN THOUSAND WORDS SO instead I'm just gonna copy and paste what I wrote to my partner about it (who loves the Cask of Amontillado, too :) I really love Poe's work fuckkk)
In the episode beforehand we see Fern (Grass curse version of Finn) struggling with the fact that he, being made from Finn's time loop self preserved in a sword that was then taken over by the curse of Finn's old grass sword, is different than Finn himself
He believes that since he shared all of Finn's memories and is a version of Finn (again, time looped version of Finn from Prismo's plan B shenanigans which if you're confused or curious about I would gladly explain) he is no different than Finn but still feels like he's falling short and losing to Finn, like he's a lesser version of him (having naturally violent tendencies, being in Ooo while Finn was away and failing to protect it from the "Elements" arc, failing to win against Finn in even rock, paper, scissors after a series of draws, etc.)
So he decides he's going to take over Finn's life and become "the only Finn", in his words -which I wanna also talk about because that was dropped at the end of EP 13 (the one before the last episode, 14)
When Fern says "the only Finn", Finn says out loud "uh.. yeah. But that's a weird thing to call me" which shows that Finn truly believes Fern to be a different person than himself, which brings me to a conflict that happened in EP 14 where Finn and Fern are in this dungeon together and Finn stops to bring up his appreciation for Fern and feeling a close bond with him (already thus insinuating that Finn believes him to be separate because why would he bring this up if he thought of Fern as a different version of himself, there would be no reason because their similarities are a given, but I think Finn going to an entirely separate reality (Farmer Finn reality) and seeing a wildly different version of himself made him realize that just because he is Finn, he's not Finn, if that makes any sense)
Finn goes: "Hey, Fern! Wait up! Hey, I just wanna say that, it's really cool that you're in to this stuff, y'know? That we have so much in common! It feels almost like we're real brothers, right? Or.. even closer!" and this causes Fern to pause
Finn is very heavy handed with the whole "found family" thing, equating people he's close to as either his family member or a romantic interest later turned friend but still very close to his heart (as with Jake and now Fern being called his brothers, though Jake more literally as they were raised by the same parents, and BMO and Nepter his and Jake's sons as they both raise them and are wildly different in age or at least implied age, and PB and Flame Princess though those have wildly different things I'm not gonna get into but was handled extremely well)
But Ferm took it less as Finn seeing him as someone detached from him and who just so happens to have the same interests as him in the same way that Jake does to Finn making fun of him for being just another version of Finn and seeing himself as just that
Even MORE fucked up is how they got here in the first place in one of my favorite ways to torture someone mentally: Hiding in plain sight
End of EP 13, when Fern gives the line "the only Finn", we see that he's able to shange his grassy self into Finn's human body, and earlier in the beginning of EP 14 we see Finn talking to Jake, Nepter and BMO, all of the inhabitants of the house who are all talking about going to the market to buy a replacement trumpet for Jake who's trumpets keep mysteriously breaking (BMO is quick to give in to the guilt of this and apologizes for being the destructor of the trumpets before Finn and Nepter pull an "I'm Radio Rebel" on them)
But what we see when they leave is that Finn is actually Fern and has convinced Finn that he's able to "shapeshift" as a new ability, and shape shifted as Finn specifically to play a prank on the others. Come to find out when Fern and Finn are dungeoning, Fern plans to leave Finn in that dungeon room in the most beautiful interpretation of Cask of Amontillado I've EVER seen
Let me elaborate
In the Cask of Amontillado we see Montressor literally lead Fortunado to his death and even show it to him and TELL him about it Sure he tricked him into going along with it, but Fortunado is still confused as to why Montressor would be blocking him inside his own tomb despite having willing walked into it after repeatedly being shown Montressor's hand, his cards, his knife, whatever you wanna call Montressor practically showing him the weapon he was going to murder him with
And in EP 14 it's driven home FURTHER by the fact that Fern LITERALLY WALLS FINN'S ONLY EXIT OFF WITH STONE AFTER FINN WILLINGLY WALKED IN UNDER THE GUISE OF IT BEING A TREASURE ROOM
Fuck's sake the parallels are INSANE, I high recommend watching the on screen play of Cask of Amontillado and then EP 14 of Adventure Time because the parallels are incredibly similar Like to the point where Fern pushes out a brick in the same fashion that Montressor left out a brick to talk to Fortunado one last time before resealing the hole up and walking away from the cask
If that's really confusing, I had to explain to them AT lore because they don't watch it and also I didn't reread it when I was writing it, I wrote it in a frenzy cause that's genuinely one of my favorite episodes now so sorry for any spelling mistakes
Also I'm literally obsessed with Fionna and Cake's intro, I don't know why but THAT SCRATCHES THE BRAIN SO GOOOOOD FUCKK
like truly I'm thinking about it and it won't go away
Also L + ratio + bozo to people getting upset with Marshal Lee being black despite in canon Marceline's mom was black so really all it did was confirm Marceline's dad was black coded and she's not mixed
ALSO I LOVE DONALD GLOVER WHY DID ANYONE THINK HE WASN'T BLACK ??? I mean I know that the VA doesn't determine the race of the character, but I mean COME ON
But I will never forgive the writers for naming Prince Bubblegum "GARY"
what is he a SNAIL who lives in a PINEAPPLE under the SEA ?

Pretty sure Simon Petrikov from Adventure Time/Fionna & Cake counts as explicitly a canon system by now! (spoilers for F&C)
After all, Prismo states explicitly that Fionna and Cake's entire universe is put into and contained within Simon's mind- it stays in there throughout the entire series, even after being connected with the greater multiverse. It's even made clear that his mind affects the world both explicitly (the removal of Simon's magic crown leading to the removal of F&Cverse's magic) and implicitly (the direct parallels between the Gumball/Marshall plot and the Bubbleine plot in episode 7). The only reason Fionna and Cake "get out" is through the use of a magic portal that *literally opens up in the back of Simon's head.* He has an entire universe of people living within his mind, canonically, even whilst ignoring the whole dubious "Ice King & Simon as separate entities" thing. I think that's pretty cool
Having difficulty locating information about this, but from the information in this ask, we will be putting in maybe/need to actually watch that for now.
Thanks!

Fiona & Cake: An jumbled essay
Tumblr media
Adventure time has 8 seasons , and 245 episodes total. I think the biggest question i’ve been asked is ,is it worth it to watch it before Fiona & Cake?
My personal option is you should . while the show itself isn’t entirely needed to understand Fiona &Cake, the protagonist of Adventure Time tell a lot about the world.
Adventure Time is set in an post apocalyptic world, where Finn the Human and Jake the Dog go on adventures. It’s pretty simple and straightforward, with no inherent goal. of course your given little tidbits about the characters. More specifically , the two characters who I will discuss next.Overall it’s a fun series that aired for a long time.
Marceline The Vampire
Tumblr media
Marceline the Vampire is probably my favorite female protagonist in Adventure Time. She has long black hair, and plays an guitar made out of an axe. What’s not to love about her?? I think her character is the essence of cool moody teenager.
Her character is also a really good luck into the past of the Land of Oo, where Adventure Time is set. Marceline is the last vampire of her kind and is nicknamed ‘ the queen of the vampires’. Way after the bombs that created the land of Oo, she killed all the vampires including the one that had turned her.
If i had to tell you what Marceline is most known for, it’s probably her music and the relationship that she has with another character- Princess Bubblegum.
Tumblr media
Ice King
Tumblr media
Where to start with this weirdo? Ice King was originally a professor & researcher named Simon. Before the bombs dropped he was researching a magical crown that gave him ice powers. Now , thousands of years later he’s still here - driven mad by the crowns power.
Ice King has a very special connection with Marceline the Vampire. After the bombs dropped , Marceline was but a small child lost in the wasteland. For many years , Simon took care of her , fed her and tended to when she was sick. Simon slowly went crazy, relying on the power of the crown to protect himself and Marceline. Eventually though after trying to protect Marceline , he uses the crown and succumbs to madness.
So Why Does any of this matter?
Marceline and Ice King are two of the most lore-heavy characters within Adventure Time . It’s really funny to look back on the show is that Fionna &Cake are joke characters. In particular, Fiona & Cake are from a genderbent reality of the Land of Ooo. They are first introduced as ‘fanficitons’ written by our crazy Ice King.
Something that started out as a joke , suddenly became ever so real and an important addition to Aventure Time’s world.
Fiona & Cake: The show
I think it’s important to distinguish that Fiona & Cake start out in the ‘normal’ world at the start of this show. This was a way to not only connect with the audience but to make the show more ‘real’ . Over the years cartoons are taken less seriously , and are addressed as ‘for children’.
Fiona & Cale takes a real if not emotional approach to its audience. Its audience who, they know are all grown up now. Struggling through adulthood whether that’s college or a job. The biggest thing to remember about Fiona & Cake as well is that this is a genderbent universe.
I think that listening to the depressive opening of Fiona awakens something in those who love Adventure Time. While Fiona feels like everything is on repeat and boring ,we know otherwise . We know that her world is littered with exciting, cool people because we know the land of Oo. We know that her world is exciting, even if it could always be better.
In a way i guess this invokes some self-reflection on the viewers , that the world isn’t as dark as we may think. That the world is full of cool people who, we haven’t quite met yet.

Wholesome Questionare Tag Meme
Tagged by @80sglamcowboy Rules are: -Post the rules -Answer the questions given to you by the tagger -Write eleven questions of your own -Tag eleven people
This is long as Hell, friends and I apologise.
One inquisitive bitch has asked me:
1. Name one person (real or fictional) that you think you could 100% take on in a fight
Foaming mouth guy from Avatar. He’s got no stamina, barely any health, no skill. He’s unfocused and weak and my noodley nerd-ass could take him. (Though I am a little concerned he has rabies.)
2. What’s your favourite snack rn
Grilled cheese w veggies, mustard, and grilled tofu w a side of ketchup made by my roommate. It’s honestly the purest thing.
3. Which apocalypse do you think you’d do the best in? (i.e. Nuclear winter/ robot uprising/ Too many vampires, etc)
O man. I love apocalypse movies and I love survival horror (that one episode of the X Files where they’re trapped in a cabin, anybody?). I also genuinely love camping and I’m a bit of a medical hobbyist. I also watched an unreasonable amount of prepper videos on YouTube. That said, as mentioned above, I am a couch potato weekling. Furthermore, I don’t do well in conflict so if the world hierarchy collapses into a power vacuum where you have to Orange is the New Black-style intimidate ppl for supplies, I would melt and die quickly.
My best bet, it would seem, is an Arrival-esque alien apocalypse where the ones who have enough patience and sci fi knowledge to communicate w aliens are at the top of the food chain. And worst case scenario it’s better for my ego to die at the hands of an alien than a human.
Sci go apocalypses are just cleaner y'know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4. Best and worst fandom you’ve been in? Or have you somehow managed to avoid fandom completely?
Worst has to be Steven Universe. I regret not just moving on after I got bored. Ah well.
(I also think celebrity/real ppl fandoms are a dead end.)
My other fandoms all have various pros and cons and it’s hard to pick a favourite.
Adventure Time has great fanart, great meta and ppl have yet to descend into Homestuck-ian chaos. That said, they’re quiet af. People also fixate way too much on the fake fanfic AU Fionna and Cake. I have yet to read a really good Bonny/Marcy fic and that is a tragedy (a few have come close tho). Bottom line for AT tho is that it’s my go to wholesome cartoonist fandom. I like that it has depth but that it’s generally very simple and fun and that the fans are mostly shut in animation adults.
AtLA/LoK fandom’s biggest pro is that it’s huge and you literally never ran out of quality content. I’ve even made a few friends via this decade old franchise. It’s also enjoyably rich and complex. One of my favourite (now inactive) blogs was one that connected world building and little background Easter eggs to real Chinese history and culture. That wAs so cool!! I defs think as a Chinese person it allowed me to connect to non-western culture in a socially acceptable way.
The downsides tho are many: it can be overwhelmingly complicated (esp as someone who knows jack shit abt Chinese history), people take it too seriously, The Great Shipping Wars, it’s so big it’s a little lonely, the show itself has so many flaws upon greater inspection you wonder why you wasted your time on anything related to it, it’s an Asian themed story created by white dudes who make fun of their fans, the best parts of the show were written by other writers but those same white guys get k the credit. Also as w any fandom related to POC culture, racism happens. Anyways most of you know this already. IMO the best thing to have happened do the fandom is korrasami. Now it’s just abt Asian lesbians ruling the world.
(Though I also thoroughly enjoy the Family Rivalry part of the fandom. There are so mNy dysfunctional families to choose from!)
Rick and Morty is technically speaking my newest fandom. It’s got a lot of obvious cons (pickle Rick sexists, Szechuan sauce racists, asfhkkh incest) but one other con is just how pedantic and overly analytical people are abt the world building. I can’t breathe wo being corrected. RM has a misleadingly complicated high sci fi aesthetic that begets the kind of overanalysing my brand of overanalytical nerdiness can’t handle. Too many alternate universes. It’s just too complicated.
However one thing I like is that conversely I can overanalyse the writing and characters’ psychology/relationships (which I LOVE) and ppl take me very seriously. (At least they used to.) it’s kinda validating to have your 3k word essay on an old man’s bedroom and what that signifies for his depression get over 1k notes.
Rm also attracts the fun, super talented animation crowd so there’s boundless fanart and memes. I never knew I would like a gravity falls crossover retirement home AU btwn Rick and Stan so much but the art is objectively gorgeous?? So ??
I really dislike the lack of attention the female characters get from fandom bc they’re all really great? Female rep is limited but both canon and fic really do their 2-3 tokens justice. Also the jerry hatred is getting old (that male aggression… Like… Calm down, Jake) but it’s a refreshing departure drom when Megg from family guy was the butt of the joke.
Harry Potter, one of the pillars of nerd society, has both changed my life and irreconcilably annoyed me to death. (W no thanks to the racist creator herself!) One can’t underestimate how huge the hp fandom is which offers you as many reasons to love it as reasons not to. Harry Potter’s canon has complex world building that’s also charming enough not to take itself too seriously and much the same could b said of fanon. To a degree. Certain corners of the fanbase are fantastic shitposters and meme-ers and can draw you back in like a black hole. Casually enjoying Harry potter imo is where it’s at. The fanfic is probably one of the most impressively vast. Strangers at Drakesaugh, believe it or not, still updates and not only that, I still read it.
Not casually enjoying Harry potter is, um, yikes? HP and Hunger Games love to insert themselves appropriately in real life political traumas and honestly the dedication of the fandom can be overwhelming.
The HP fanart corner of deviantart circa 2010-12 and @flocc HP comics however are the best.
Meet the Robinsons, Ye Olde Fandom, still stands to this day. (Thanks in part to me ngl) As Iroh might say, they are a proud people. MTR is so bizarre and tiny it’s the only fandom I was able to read EVERY fic summary in existence (ones published on obscure sites excepted). The fandom has never ceased to surprise me for better or worse and mostly due to its age range. The original movie was intended for 8-12 yr olds and their (jaded) parents which means that now, ten years later, the fans are anywhere between 12 and 25. It has approximately 20 pieces of professional-grade fanart and fic and I am downright serious abt the quality and thoughtful complexity of this minority of fanart. Like I shit you not some of it’s almost too dark. However, tragically, one can’t talk abt obscure Disney fandoms wo also mentioning the incest ships (this is what happens when middleschoolers have to resort to cartoons to explore their sexuality in an anti sex ed world), the disorganised crossovers, and the blinding lack of imagination. Nonetheless, that a fandom of any kind could sprout from a 90 min cgi movie before the recession, based off an obscure but objectively fascinating children’s book, is still impressive. The fandoms smallness can in many wars work to everybody’s benefit: it’s a tightly knit community w little to no drama. And lots of memes (that I mostly make) to enjoy sincerely or ironically.
I’m also going to mention, very briefly, the Twin Peaks fandom, most of whom, even the die hards, are v casual when it comes to fan content (I need more fic damnit). Nonetheless it’s a decidedly cool art kid crowd for an art house show and I really enjoy befriending twin peaks watchers.
5. What’s one hot food that you prefer cold? (or, alternatively, one cold food you like hot)
Is it snobby to say I like food to be the temperature God intended?
Like I like cold pizza and salad-y pasta but I wouldn’t mind if everything were room temperature as long as the food itself was well made.
6. ya like jazz? What music do you enjoy listening to? Can you recommend any songs/ artists from that genre?
I think in some contexts I can like jazz. It’s very cosy and nostalgic, it can make you feel like a grand dame stepping out of your limo into your martini filled mansion as records pop around you and your fur carpeted living room. I also occasionally like jazz covers and alternate genres of jazz like electro swing etc.
Generally though I also think jazz is a little antiquated and a little all over the place. I lean more towards the ambiguous minimalism of mellow techno music like Jonna Lee, Grimes, Björk, early Lorde, Yasmine Hamdan, Austra, TRST, etc
I mean I don’t stick to just one genre (I imagine most ppl don’t). I like alternative (Tori Amos, Regina Spektor, Joanna Newsom) and some musicians who seem to completely exist outside of genre like iMonster and the Gorillaz. Not to mention straight up pop like broods, Ellie goulding, lady gaga and Lana del rey. (I mean technically Ldr isn’t pop but u get the ideer)
7. What binge worthy show do you like?
So many man. There are so many out there! Twin peaks, Transparent, Love, Grace and Frankie, Adventure Time, House of Cards, Bojack Horseman, Rick and Morty, Mad Men, Girls, Broad City, Black Mirror, Avatar TLA, 6Teen, Chowder, Over the Garden Wall, Flapjack, the first season of Downton Abbey, Game of Thrones, etc
The list goes on. I’m a TV fiend.
8. What’s an old meme that you miss and wish would be brought back?
Always liked the Gothic [x town or whatever] meme. It was like a text post version of the cursed images meme. Currently I’m really enjoying the song from another room meme and I hope even after it gets old it’ll make a comeback.
9. Tell me your aesthetic

O man. That’s a can of worms! Okay. Deep breath.
I like futurism, of all kinds. I like strong lines and clear shapes. I like colour blocking and minimalism and glass and holographic LED neons. I like white Japanese urban tiled buildings. I like aliens and ruins and cubes and white and colour blocking and black. I like technology and aliens and Comme des Garçons and Issey Miyake. Rooms that are empty but for one light and one window and one plant. Love that.
I like the midcentury cubism and Mod and 30’s futurism. Clear and strong industrial shapes and curves and post modernist abstractionism.
I also love nature, I love most every Björk and Iamamiwhoami music video. I love the mountains and the forests and the desert and the winter tundra and most of all I love the water. A vast expanse of sky and sea w so many colours and textures. I love the 2000s and funny blob shapes and y2k’s obsession w secondary colours and shiny round things. Love pink. I am a grown adult who will never tire of pink. (Though I don’t really like when people overdo pink.) I love cursed image family photos taken with flash in a suburb. I love the grime and the sanitary aesthetic of suburbs and hospitals and brutalist office spaces. The fluorescent lights of the institution but with purple carpeting!
I love 70s mod and I love colorful 80s brutalism I like it when houses are shaped weirdly and they have carpets and polished curved wooden countertops and spacious nothingness where everything looks clean and cosy and bizarrely ugly and it all looks like an art gallery w too many plants.
I also really love maximalism and wood and detail and fur and velvet and embroidery and silk and windows and wood carvings.
I love 70s kitsch like John waters movies and Shrimps designer fake fur CDG17 where they just piled on knickknack after knickknack onto white dresses w food long trains. Toys and novelty items and lamps shaped like a woman’s leg in a fishnet stocking. (See also: most Tim burton movies, wes Anderson, Carrie fishers house)
An overwhelming mishmash of wool patterns with clean cubic 70s architecture and so many plants and windows and wallpaper and candles and cobwebs. Also really like witchy mourning jewelry and essentially every house in Harry potter. Love the unfortunately racist boho/hippie aesthetic. Any house designed by bill kirsch is a masterpiece. Woven baskets on the ceiling piles of hats and art supplies everywhere. Stuff!! Everywhere! Hidden passageways reading nooks fireplaces the Pink Palace from Coraline!
Everything!!!
I’m a cartoonist who’s a nerd for design so I like when concepts are taken to the extreme in a humourously charming and clear-minded way. Whatever aesthetic someone chooses, they should go all out and really dedicate themselves to the highest form of that aesthetic. It has to be perfect without being sanitary of fake. It has to be alive yet beautiful, frozen in one perfect moment.
10. Favourite time of day and why?
Dusk. I think it’s a nostalgia thing. I loved the hours before bed time as well the hours before dinner when it was getting dark and the sun was reflecting freaky colours along the horizon while I ran around the grass. It’s cozy but it’s spacious and adventurous. So many things can happen at dusk!

11. You have the choice to live in any fictional universe - which one do you pick and why?
Harry Potter!!! You get the best of both worlds: magical, over-romanticised Victorian/medievalism, wish-fulfillment surrealism and wifi. It’s great. Likelihood of dying is so low, medicine is so advanced and even then ppls n°1 choice of lethal weapon (Avada Kedavra) is painless. Me and Luna could hang in her garden. I’d never have to pay for the subway again. I could live a nomadic life in a tent w infinite space. If you chose to live as a wizard amongst Muggles you’re basically god and you can cheat capitalism. Gravity is my bitch! And I’m not gna lie my dream house has always been a combination of The Burrow, the Lovegood house, and Shell Cottage.
My turn to pick your brain:
1 Favourite texture?
2 Favourite smell?
3 Favourite children’s book/children’s TV show? (I’m talking about the bizarre abstract ones for toddlers)
4 Best and worst prank you’ve ever pulled?
5 Weirdest beginning of a friendship?
6 When you’ve been in fandom for a while you start to notice you’ve a habit of staying in the same corners. What corner are you in? Are you part of the fluffy ship corner? The intense world building spec meta corner? The shitpost comic fanart corner? Etc
7 If you could invent a class that would be obligatory for all high schools across your country what would it be?
8 What’s the weirdest thing you’ve gotten at Halloween while trick or treating?
9 Weirdest family tradition of yours?
10 Describe your significant other (or your crush, or your dream partner or if you’re aromantic your fave person) through only TV references.
11 Favourite piece of dialogue in a movie?
I don’t know 11 ppl but nonetheless tagging: @that-guy-in-the-bowler-hat @skairheart @nochangenohope @eventheslightestrayofsunshine@autistic-jaredkleinman@phoenixkluke
…and YOU (if you were not mentioned above and so choose to accept this mission)
