kinda annoyed by a lot of online discourse of gbbo that I think is at least partially caused by those talking about it not actually watching it

bc when you do watch it you really start noticing the divide between the judges and the contestants, and so much of the criticism that then goes to generalise brits only really applies to the former.

yes, paul and prue are gammony little fucks who declare themselves experts on other countries' food they tried once and call any ingredient that can't be grown in somerset exotic and can't handle spice to save their lives

but here the contestants are, a variety of ages and backgrounds and who bring their own cultures into their cooking whether they're from scotland or the philippines, who try to innovate with flavour and technique no matter how much paul sulks, and who staunchly continue their attempted assassinations of the judges via somewhat spicy food (y'all are doing god's work)

so when (also mostly british!) people's snide online commentary is then used to piece back together this narrative that paints our entire country with paul hollywood's shitty little spray tan, it's kinda fucking insulting.

(also shock horror, mexican cuisine isn't as popular or commonplace here as in the country NEXT TO MEXICO, stop the fucking presses! how dare people not know how to pronounce a word they've never seen from a language the vast majority of us aren't taught! fuck paul hollywood tho lol)

1st of all most ppl i c make that argument r literally white American meaning that if me being born in Britain makes me a coloniser than they definitely r 1 also and secondly i should not b blamed on a personal lvl and hav 2 deal w/ ppl treating me like less of a person and making jokes abt going genocidal against every1 in my country, myself included just bc of something that happened long b4 i was born

moving onto Ireland specifically

if ur rly gonna b out here thinking it's ok 2 make jokes abt the potato famine which was a targeted genocide against Irish ppl then i rly don't know what 2 say, ur a dick and u shouldn't get 2 call urself a leftist if ur gonna b xenophobic also b4 u pull out the "but they make jokes abt it all the time" card like yeh no shit, ppl joking about their own oppression is very different from joking abt the oppression of other ppl, i call myself a transfag but that doesn't mean it wouldn't b different if a straight cis person started calling me that
