Harry Hook x reader – connected – soulmate! AU
Tumblr media
Type of soulmate au: hearing the other thoughts
Key:
h/c- hair color
e/c- eye color
h/l- hair length
s/c- skin color
y/n- your name
---(y/n) POV---
soulmates are able to hear the others thoughts, you have been hearing the thoughts of one harry hook since you were a child when you could understand speech and thoughts.
He was the first to make contact, when you were 3 years old
Hello?
Hi! Are you my soulmate?
Yes!! I wasn’t sure yeh would respond, my names harry hook! What's yours?
(y/n), (y/n) Swann.
You both talked constantly day and night, your mother having to teach you to shut off the link between you and Harry so you could get some sleep.
One problem, he's an isle kid, you’re an Auradon kid, royalty to be exact, well…not really royalty, the daughter of the pirate king, Elizabeth swan.
You were (y/n) Swann-Turner, daughter of Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner. One day Harry had invaded your thoughts, screaming about the fact that hed just heard a story from his uncle smee about the pirate king. Elizabeth Swann, asking you if she was the same as your mother.
When you had told him she was, Harry had squealed in excitement.
Then his thoughts turned fearful, he told you he had to go
Im sorry (y/n) I haveta go, meh dads getting mad, he's scary when he's mad.
It's okay Harry, stay safe.
I'll try
He had shut his link of with you for a while, only opening it once to tell you his dad had forbidden him from talking to you ever again
Im sorry lass, I don’t want to, but he scares me.
I understand, just…just check in once in a while, please?
Yeah
That had been the end of your full conversations for a while. He only reopened the link once a month, just to say he was okay, and then he would close it.
You hated it, falling into a depression, that happened to those whose soulmates closed off their connection.
One day, when you were 15, he opened the link, scaring you slightly as you were studying for the geometry test.
LASSIE
On davy jones heart harry! What the fuck?
Sorry, good news!
Yeah?
Meh dads dead!!!
Lassie?
How is that good news?
It means we can talk freely lass!!! He can’t tell me to not talk to yeh!
Oh!!! Yay!!
So…hows it been going for the last seven years?
You both talked all throughout the night and into the morning, happy to be properly speaking to the other for the first time in a long time.
And if that meant you fell asleep during the test that’s okay, you were just happy that you could talk to him again
Your mother had noticed as well, your grades had gone up, you were eating properly again, you had taken an interest in your swordsmanship once more, you were just…happier.
“(y/n)?” you glanced up from your book, telling Harry to pause your conversation for a  moment.
Are yeh sure lass, is it ba-
It's okay Harry, it's just my mum
Okay.
“what's up mum?” you asked, raising your brow at your mother, she seemed…not concerned but curious.
“I've noticed something.”
“yeah?”
“You seem…happier?”
“oh! Yeah, my soulmate reopened the link-“
“oh! Thank goodness, I noticed you became depressed after he shut the link, I was the same way when your father closed it after he became captain of the  Dutchmen…im happy for you sweetie” she walked over to you, leaning down to hug you
“thanks mum” you leaned into your mothers embrace, she kissed your forehead and left the room, closing the door behind you.
Yeh have a good relationship with yeh mom
Yeah im thankful for that
….
Harry?
Sorry was just..thinking
Don’t hurt yourself hooky
Eay!!
One day, the crown prince ben, the son of King Adam and Belle, had announced his first proclamation, that he would be bringing four VKs to Auradon to attend Auradon Prep, to give them a chance at a normal life.
When you heard you immediately told harry.
Harry!!! Guess what!!
Shit! Yeh scared meh,…um…. you're a pirate lord now?!
No, that’s not happening till my mom passes her title to me, but Bens going to bring over four VKs to Auradon!!!!
Holy fuck what!?!?!
Yeah!!! I'll see if I can convince him to bring you over!!!
I really hope you can, I want to see you
Right back at you hooky
Shit Umas calling me I gotta go
Kay, say hi to her for me! Oh! And tell her ill try to get her over too, I want to meet my fellow pirate captain.
Kay, talk teh yeh later lassie
Bye
-----
Ben had already decided on who he would be bringing
Mal, Evie, Carlos, and jay. You furrowed your brows and the first and last name, harry had told you about them
Mal, the girl that had ruined Umas reputation and self-esteem, and Jay, the boy who abandoned Harry when he needed him most.
Harry had nothing against Evie and Carlos, other than the fact that they crewed with Mal.
You had tried to argue against his choice, trying to suggest Harry and Uma, when he voiced that Mal was his soulmate like Harry was yours.
You stopped at that, asking him to at least promise to bring over Harry, Gil, and Uma after the first four are more accustomed to Auradon.
He promised.
----
He forgot his promise. It's been six months since the core four came over, six months since you told harry the bad news, six months of trying to bug ben to remember his promise
But all you got was ‘im busy (y/n)’ ‘I can't right now (y/n)’ ‘I have a date with mal right now (y/n) later’
He kept making excuses, more and more each day, till you weren’t even able to talk to him at all.
One day
Lassie, you'll never guess who I just found~
Something to strangle Chad Charming with?
What?
Nevermind, go on?
The traitor malsie~
Wha? Shes…she and Ben had a fight, she must've cracked and retreated to the isle.
Oh oh oh~ that’s good! Umas gonna love this~!
Good, maybe you guys can get some leverage on ben.
You were interrupted by frantic knocking on your door, getting up, you heard Harry talking animatedly in the background, but you toned the link down, so you could hear him if he called for you, but you could also ignore him if needed.
Opening the door, you saw Evie, looking worried.
“what do you want?”
“Mal’s gone back to the isle.”
You just stared at her for a few moments, before raising your brow in disinterest. “and I care why?”
“because…..you said your soulmates a vk right?”
“Yeah?..”
“You can visit him when we all go to get Mal!”
You paused, if you went with them, you could see Harry, wait we?
“we? Whos we?
“me Carlos, Jay, and Ben”
“Ben? As in King Ben? That’s a stupid move Evie”
“he's the one who has to convince Mal to come back, and he was going to go alone before I insisted that we go”
“and you need me why?”
“because your even more skilled than Jay and Carlos with a sword, and you’re terrifying when you fight. It would be a good idea for you to be Bens bodyguard”
You sighed, pinching the bridge of your nose, before hearing Harry's voice, calling your name in confusion
“fine, I’ll go but only to meet my soulmate”
“Okay, meet us at the back of the dorms in an hour!”
You nodded, closing the door, and turning to your room, leaning back on your door.
Hey hooky, guess whos coming to the isle~
----
The isle…was exactly the way Harry described it. Rundown, trash everywhere, the smell of rot filling the air.
It only made your decision to get harry of the isle more strong.
As you arrived at the core four hideout, you told Harry where it was, and to wait at the back ally.
On it lassie, see yeh soon
See you soon harry.
Once Ben had returned from the upstairs loft, he left to the back ally, and you followed him.
“Ben, wait up”
“I can't believe this, I thought, I thought Auradon was enough for Mal I thought-“
“okay beasty boy im going to stop you right there, it wasn’t that Auradon wasn’t enough for her, it was the pressure of having to be this pretty pink perfect princess, and the fact that you never bothered to ask if she was okay or not, you just assumed, now I don’t like Mal, but I could tell she was getting overwhelmed”
“i-I ah!”
A pair of arms grabbed Ben, wrestling his wrists together, and gagging him.
Then you were grabbed.
You yelped, fighting back against the tall male holding you, turning slightly, you saw a tan male, with braids holding his hair back.
“lookie what we got here lads~ a lost king~”
You recognized that voice.
You turned to it, seeing a tall male, red scarlet jacket, fluffy curly black hair, ocean blue eyes lined with kohl, diamond-cut jaw, and..and a hook in his left hand.
‘Harry?’ you thought
The male tensed slightly still taunting Ben but seeming to have another conversation in his head.
Yeah, lass?
Are you in front of Ben at the moment?
Yeah, we just got him, why?
Did you catch anyone else?
Aye, this pretty lass with (h/c) hair and (e/c) eyes, why?
That’s me you asshole
“fuck” Harry said aloud, glancing at you. Before turning back to Ben, pointing his hook at him.
“take him teh the brigs, and bring her” he pointed at you, a softness in his eyes “to meh courters. I wanna have a little chat wit her”
Harry turned, walking back down the ally, to Evie calling for Ben
-----
Now you sat on Harry's bed, feeling slightly awkward as you waited for him to return from…whatever he was doing.
The door opened, and Harry stepped through, looking…nervous?
You both just stared at each other as he closed the door behind him.
We've talked for years and all of a sudden, we can't do it in real life?
Harry jumped slightly, not expecting you to use the link to talk.
“uh yeah, I guess….. I dinne kay how teh do this.”
“Neither do I” you shrugged, “but we’re soulmates for a reason aren’t we?”
“aye”
So you talked, about what was going to happen, and what was going on tomorrow, and what would happen after.
“because of Bens….forgiving tendencies, I think he'll still let you over, especially if Uma can work her magic.”
Harry nodded, sighing, looking at you through his lashes.
“…lassie?”
You hummed stopping your pacing, looking down at Harry sitting on his bed.
“yeah?”
Harry shuffled his feet, playing with his hook, and biting his lip.
“can…can I kiss yeh?”
You paused, staring at him, he looked up at you, shy and unsure, you bit your lip, sitting down on the bed next to him.
“yes” you whispered, Harry didn’t waste a second, leaning in and passionately pressing his lips to yours.
You moaned in response as he pushed you down onto the bed, wrapping his arms around your waist, you curl your fingers into his hair. He nipped your lip as you pulled his black curled locks
-----
The next morning, you woke up in Harry's arms (completely clothed btw you nastys~ ;p) you groaned as you uncurled yourself from harry, sitting up from the bed, you stretched.
You heard harry sniff as he sat up, laying his head between your shoulder blades.
“wand for the crown today lass”
“mmhh, yeah, let's hope Mal brings it”
----
You had ended up tied with ben, to give the illusion that you weren’t apart of the plan. Ben apologized to you, saying that he was sorry you had never had the chance to meet your soulmate.
You and Harry locked eyes, linking once more
Is beasty boy really that oblivious?
Yep
Wow
Soon Mal showed up, and you had been around the wand enough time to tell it was plastic. You could see the lines where the plastic melded together.
Harry! the wands fake!
What!!!!
Yeah, Carlos must've printed it with his 3d printer
You heard Harry growl as his grip on Ben tightened, but you stopped him from releasing Ben into the shark-infested waters
Harry doesn’t, he's your only way to Auradon now!
Harry, please
…fine
Thank you, I just got you, I cant lose you
Harry nodded at you, bringing Ben towards him slightly, away from the edge of the plank.
“Harry…bring em over”
Harry grumbled as he gripped Bens jacket collar, leading you with his hook.
He shoved Ben down to his knees, gently pushing you to stand beside him
“cut em lose”
He huffed, “I never get teh have any fun!” he sliced Bens ropes and used his hook to free you.
Go with them lass, yeh don’t belong on the isle, ill be fine
I don’t like it but okay, stay safe.
You tried to rush to the tunnel with the others, but Uma snapped the “wand” and order for the crew to take you down.
Jay tossed you a sword, you caught it effortlessly, twirling it in your palm, and launching into battle, sending the crew's swords flying and swiftly cutting them down.
Harry was cackling in your mind
Holy shit lassie!!! Yer impressive!!
Why thank you~ I learned from the best!
Tell yer dad the teach me!!
Tell him yourself!
Hahaha!
Then the smoke bombs, you glanced at Harry, who was soaking wet and turned your gaze to Uma, nodding at her, she returned it, rage still in her eyes
See you hooky
See ya Swann
You leaped into the car, seeing a particular book in the corner of your eye
Harry
Hm?
Mals spellbook, at the other side of the tunnel
Got ill tell Uma
Good luck
Lassie?
Yeah, Harry?
i….
I have strong affections for you too hooky
…thanks.

[ au drabbles ]                        marvel universe
ashara as kate bishop | morrec as clint barton
“We could call you Lady Lemons, since you’re so fucking sour.” Morrec said as he poured himself a generous cup of coffee.
“We’re not calling me Lady Lemons.” Ashara rolled her eyes. She was working meticulously on sharpening the tips of her arrows. “Number one, it has nothing to do with a bow. Number two, I am not as sour as you are old man. And number three, I’m just going to be Hawkeye.”
Morrec took a large drink from his coffee mug. It had chips on the handle from over use, and what appeared to be a band-aid over a crack forming near the bottom. He also had a few bandages on his nose and the side of his head. It would be a strange day indeed if Morrec went without the need of some first aid. “You can’t be Hawkeye. I’m Hawkeye.”
“We can both be Hawkeye.”
“Do you know how confusing that would be?” Ashara had finished sharpening her arrows and put them back into her automated quiver. Suddenly, there was an explosion a mile or so east of where they were. The two jumped to attention immediately. Ashara ran to put on her boots, struggling and hopping about to pull them up her calf and zip them. Morrec, still trying to sip the hot contents of his coffee mug, attempted in vain to kick his shoes on with no hands.
Eventually, after several failed attempts at kicking on shoes and one large coffee burn, they stumbled out of the townhouse that they ‘lived’ in and into the streets. People were fleeing past them, and what appeared to be a giant blue humanoid was smashing up downtown. Ashara sighed and began sprinting towards the chaos, bow in hand. Morrec was not far behind.
“Do you think we should call the others?” She shouted over her shoulder wishing vehemently that she was one of the Avengers that could fly or teleport or not have to run everywhere. Why hadn’t she picked Tony Stark to be her mentor again?
Morrec laughed. “Oh we should definitely call the others.” He said and continued to run behind her. He pulled an arrow from his quiver and notched it into his bow, just in case. After a few battles against what he could safely assume was aliens, Morrec had learned to prepare slightly before as to knock get knocked flat on your ass.
“Then are you going to call them?!” Ashara asked, nearly breathless at this point.
“Nope.” Ashara stopped, placing her hands on her knees to catch her breath for a moment. She whipped her head around to see her friend and mentor pausing in the same fashion. Morrec’s face was already twisted into a cringe as he responded. “I forgot my phone at home.”
Mouth agape, Ashara stared at him. She knew that she should start running again, but the stupidity that she’d just witnessed took her by surprise. “There is a giant explosion- an Avenger level explosion- and you were more concern about your coffee than the phone which bring in the hard hitters? Are you kidding me?”
“I’m tired.”
“Unbelievable.” Her tone was as dry as a desert drought. Much to her chagrin, Ashara began to run again. Fortunately, or unfortunately, she did not need to run for much longer. The humanoid or alien or whatever beastie promptly smashed through a street of buildings and came face to face with the bow wielding duo. Ashara looked up at the creature which stood approximately eight feet taller than she did. “Unbelievable.” She repeated and brought her bow up.
It was remarkable how synchronized people became when they spent far too much time together. First attempt to take the thing down was bomb arrows straight to the eyes, the throat, the chest. He battered them away as if they were no more than bee stings. Not good. Second attempt was the Wizard of Oz special. Morrec shot a bomb to a building to the left of him, Ashara shot an arrow to the right. While the building did collapse and bring him down to his knees for a moment. It was not a long-lasting solution.
Final attempt, Star Wars plan B. AT-AT on Hoth. Ashara jumped quickly to the side to avoid a large piece of falling debris. She shot a line across, Morrec shot one back. they continued this pattern until the villain was properly tripped up. The blue man went down to one knee before it completely collapsed on the ground, causing a large crater into the earth. Ashara looked over to Morrec, they both grinned widely. That was why she hadn’t chosen Tony Stark or Bruce Banner or even Scarlet Witch to be her mentor. She wanted Morrec because he could do damn well what they do with none of the super abilities. He was just a man with a bow.
The reverberations of his collapse cause the buildings to shake even more than they had before. A skyscraper’s top third began to fall. Morrec called out to warn Ashara, but it was too late. The building came down fast and hard atop her.
“Damn it, damn it!” He cried out as he dropped his bow and went running without caution into the rubble. Morrec grabbed the largest pieces that he could pull off of her. “I knew I shouldn’t have let her come. I knew I should never have agreed to train her. Those stupid big brown eyes are too convincing.” He threw another piece of the building as far as he could manage. “God damn it. Don’t be dead.” He pleaded when his eyes caught sight of flesh underneath a large metal beam.
Ashara blinked hazily, but opened her eyes. Above her was what could only be described as a completely panic stricken Morrec. “We won right?” She asked. She definitely had a concussion. “Because I won’t lie, it definitely does not feel like it.”
Morrec couldn’t help but laugh. Relief washed over him. “Oh god. Oh thank god.” He shook his head wildly and reach down to help her out of the rubble. “You know what. Fuck it. We’re both Hawkeye now.”

A Christmas Tale Starring: Nothing!
It was the holidays! Christmas was soon to come barreling right around the corner. As per tradition, a story was in order! Something to capture the true spirit of the season! Something deep, heartfelt; a tale to deliver warmth in the most frigid time of the year. The only problem: He had nothing!! Absolutely no idea where he was going to take the story! The countdown for the seasonal get-together ticked down faster and faster, as if to mock him. If Matt was going to put a meaningful bow on the festivities, he had to manage his way through the Christmas Crunch. But how?
How could he condense in words
The sheets of snows,
Snowmen in herds?
Every shining winter light,
Bringing cheer and warmth tonight?
 Tinsel wrapping verdant trees
Packed presents by its feet?
Every smile glowing bright,
Fuller than the orbs hung tight;
Brilliant like the crowning star.
Can mere words take heart that far?
More than these, how much worth
Are words to tell a Savior’s birth?
Time is ticking,
Sinking quick…
Find the spirit
And hope they stick!
“Good morning, Kami-sama!” Junpei barged in, turning Matt’s mood even worse.
Matt groaned. “No time, Junpei! I need to get inspiration!”
“Stuck in the muck again?”
“Christmas is almost here! It’s a good thing I planned days ahead. Otherwise-“
“Otherwise this calendar would be super horrifying!” Junpei held up a calendar… 12/24 was circled in purple.
“IT’S CHRISTMAS EVE!”
“Did my purple-y hat not tip you off, Kami-sama? I love the holidays!”
“How did I let it get so bad?!”
“You’re lazy remember?”
“… … Get outta the way. I gotta find something to get the eggnog churning!”
Junpei followed Matt out of his room. “Where is it hiding?”
“In the living room!” The two set off at once.
How could he condense in words
The sheets of snows,
Snowmen in herds?
Every shining winter light,
Bringing cheer and warmth tonight?
 Tinsel wrapping verdant trees
Packed presents by its feet?
Every smile glowing bright,
Fuller than the orbs hung tight;
Brilliant like the crowning star.
Can mere words take heart that far?
More than these, how much worth
Are words to tell a Savior’s birth?
Time is ticking,
Sinking quick…
Find the spirit
And hope they stick!
Down the stairs Matt flew, faster than he ever seen himself. There had to be inspiration around here somewhere! Duke heard his master and best friend walk into the living room and jumped up to meet him.
“Hey there, Dukey-duke!” Matt patted and scritched Duke, causing him to whine and rub against his legs. The fluffy long-haired german shepherd always had a thing for rubbing against Matt’s legs. It was like a cat, but heavier. The tail whips were unpleasant, but ignored. A large lion, inversely named Tiger, with a mane like burning rubies lay near the fireplace. With him, a small girl in a silver and white jacket, black pants, and thin brown boots nestled against Tiger’s mane. Duke hopped back into the living room, paws thumping around his best friend. With her was Finnick, a farofin. His black bandana that sported a cyan lightning bolt streaking diagonally right to left, ending at the front edge of the fabric, was replaced with a red and green one. He was taking a nap in the soft red hair, big ears twitching in his dream.
“Hey, Knife!” Matt greeted. Junpei waved his long purple Ugly Christmas sweater sleeve.
She lifted her head a bit and said, “Good morning!” Lion lifted his head for a quick pat and brush of his mane, purring lowly.
“Are you writing still?” Knife asked.
“Just figured I get some ideas before I go,” Matt answered. “Why do you ask?”
“Junpei said you’re probably not getting it done.”
Matt looked at Junpei. Junpei avoided his glance and studied the mid-size Christmas tree. It glistened with silver and red tinsel, ornaments, all topped with a gold and white Starby at the top. Lights of red, blue, green, and yellow blinked on and off in soft timing. Truly a beautiful sight, and a wonderful addition to the holiday celebration.
“You should write about the tree!” Knife suggested.
Matt chuckled. “A tree that dreamed to be well dressed?”
“Yeah!”
“That would be lovely. I just might.” Could he spare an entire story to a single tree? He wasn’t sure anybody would find it an interesting story. Plus, it confined him to nature imagery for the most part. Perhaps adding the smell of pine mixing with warm baked cookies would add more of a home element to it? No, the idea perished under further scrutiny. However, Matt had an idea. An awful idea. A wonderful, awful idea. Cookies were being made in the kitchen. Under the guise of needing a job in creativity, he could make off with a couple. Bidding Knife, Duke, and Tiger bye, he went off to execute his plan.
How could he condense in words
The sheets of snows,
Snowmen in herds?
Every shining winter light,
Bringing cheer and warmth tonight?
 Tinsel wrapping verdant trees

Matt and Junpei found Efpy and Parfait au Lait at work making cookies, the perfect treat for the best holiday. Dumpling, a white and black cat, watched them, tail occasionally flitting behind her. Dumpling enjoyed the attention she was receiving from Sword, the black-haired older sister of Knife, found herself in a red sweater with black leggings and matching brown boots, like her younger sibling. Beastakyu, a taller, red and black farofin, was, of course, enlisted to help. Not being the best artist, he was happy to receive backup.
“Hey, guys!” Matt waved as he entered. “Woah, those look nice!” There were sugar cookies, freshly baked in rows of sheets. Efpy’s white hair bobbed as she sang a tune, helping the blonde purveyor of puddies decorate the shapes. Trees were crafted from red and green frosting while blue and white were used for snowy backgrounds. Parfait even made Farofin shaped cookies and colored them in with yellow and dark purple for black. If there was one thing she was good at, it was making the best snacks. Anything Matt tried either burned or is mutated into a torturous life.
“Merry Christmas, Matt!” Efpy said over her shoulder.
“Merred Crambles, Dumpling!” Junpei said to his long-time pet. She answered with a meow.
“We should be almost done,” Parfait added. “Then Poker Face can have one!”
“Why, where is he?”
“Out of the kitchen,” Sword answered. “That’s why I’m here.”
“Oh, guard duty, huh?” Matt asked, amused.
“Protection is why I was created. No one gets past.”
“Not even me?”
“Sorry, Matt,” Efpy said. “Everyone should try it together. It’d welcome in the festivities, don’t you think?”
“Couldn’t argue with that,” Beasty said, scarlet eyes studying his next delicious canvas. “I tried.”
“True, true.”
“That goes double for you, Junpei,” Sword said. Junpei gave her a look, without opening his eyes, as if he was wrongfully accused. Both shot down immediately. Matt couldn’t risk a sneak move with Sword there. He didn’t want to disappoint her. He regretted having set his mind to it. He’d have to wait, which isn’t the best advice to receive when he so desperately needed an idea. Any idea to make his story. If he kept going at this rate, he would have absolutely nothing. As he exited with Junpei, a familiar masked figure made is existence known… kind of. Poker Face peeked around the corner, wearing a “Jingle Balls” jacket, the only festive thing he probably had.
“Did you score any cookies?” PF whispered.
“No,” Matt answered. “Why?”
“C’mon man, I need it. It’s the only thing that raccoon hasn’t taken from me, with its tiny sock hat…”
“I can’t help you, man.”
“Dude please, I’ll suck your bah humbugs!”
Junpei flapped his sleeves. “No, PF! This is a Christian server holiday!”
“As if he isn’t a fan of yellow snow.”
“Ok, you’re wrong, goodbye.” Matt couldn’t think inside the house. It was cold, but if the answer would come after a walk in the snow, so be it. The more he wasted time with PF, the less work he would get done. Inspiration had to be somewhere. He needed it now.
How could he condense in words
The sheets of snows,
Snowmen in herds?
Every shining winter light,
Bringing cheer and warmth tonight?
 Tinsel wrapping verdant trees
Packed presents by its feet?

“Where are you going, Kami-sama?” Junpei asked, concerned.
“Out in the cold. It’s stuffy in here, and I need a change of pace.”
“But you have a love-hate relationship with the outdoors!”
“Better than staying in here and waiting for the inevitable.” Clad in a heavy red jacket, Matt set off alone into the snow. Every foot crunch was supposed to be a step in the right direction. Every falling flake brushes another coat of vibrant paint into the puzzle words made. Right now, he wasn’t feeling anything. The brisk beats of frosty wind, but nothing else. Matt took his phone from his pocket and held the home button.
“Hey, F.A.T.E.,” Matt began, summoning a teal-haired young woman that served as A.I. “How cold is it out here?” She was dressed in a Santa outfit that matched the color of her hair, head sock and all, trimmed with white fluff, ready to rock the holidays.
“Calculating…” F.A.T.E. answered. “It is testicle-freezing cold out here, man.”
“Ah.” Was Matt’s response. He didn’t realize until it, but it was, in fact, that cold. His mind screamed for him to stop his current action and focus elsewhere. Preferably somewhere warm. He took a look back at the Winter Hideout, as he liked to call it. It was a house, wide with two stories. Light hugged the roof, edged around the corners and down by the window frames. Snow-Poker-Faces were out in the front. One of them was smoking, because the heat would destroy it, and PF had a weird sense of dark humor. Matt could see curling ropes of smoke exit the chimney. Red, blue, green, yellow, orange, back to red. His eyes were lost in the beautiful sequence of lights. It made him forget about his outside warmth and focus within. Surrounded by all of this supposed Christmas, and none of it jogged any idea forward. There was nothing to write about that didn’t seem cliché, plowed down by prose, or just plain flat on its own. What could he do? Time counted down no matter what he did. Maybe, came a small voice from inside his mind, maybe it doesn’t have to be grandiose or filled with countless pages. Perhaps what was missing all along was the beauty, the liberty of simplicity. All these things, the fire, the cookies, the lights, the companionship and family, all these things are fantastic and deserving to be there, but without Hope, the greatest Hope, born in a manger on that day we know as Christmas, well, there’d be no reason to hope in anything else on that list. He got it. Matt got it at last. As for as he was concerned,
He knew how to condense in words
The sheets of snows,
Snowmen in herds and
Every shining winter light
Bringing cheer and warmth tonight.
 Yes, tinsel coiled verdant trees
Presents packed along its feet.
Family smiles glow so bright,
Fuller than the orbs hung tight.
Brilliant like the crowning star.
Agreed, words reach far in heart.
But more than these, share the hope
In words that tell a Savior’s birth.
Time does tick, and
Might sink quickly…
This is the Spirit:
Love wasn’t finicky.
