Books of 2023. NOTHING BUT THE RAIN by Naomi Salman. I picked this up last night because I wanted to annihilate something in one sitting (it’s a whopping 91 pages), thinking the premise was Neat and it looked Very Readable, based on the opening paragraph, but I didn’t actually have any expectations for it going in.
Dear reader: I absolutely loved it.
What a weird, funny, fucked up book, which hits *checks notes* exactly all of my readerly buttons!! I love our narrator, 63-year-old retired doctor Laverne, trapped by memory-erasing rain in her exceedingly rainy childhood hometown (and, y’know, by shady mysterious lethal border guards, about whom we know absolutely nothing), and I love her voice and the format and the ambiguity and how this little book felt like exactly the right length and gave us actually no answers but guess what!! I’m not even mad!!
The tension conveyed through the broken up diary entries is absolutely masterful, and Laverne is hilarious and completely relatable, and there are completely horrifying things going on and it’s just. So Good. (but also content warnings under the cut, if that’s a thing you’re interested in!)
cw for gaslighting not just by the rain, child (and adult) death/mercy killing (not on page but described), and animal death (kitten, accidental, described as aftermath)

The Darkest Temptation by Danielle Lori
(Made book 3)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
It felt like I was Persephone dining with Hades, except the goddess came to lover the ruler of the underworld. And this wasn’t a divine romance.
No one writes about deadly men with icy hearts like Danielle Lori! Even from the beginning, I had my mind set on the end. “Please oh please fall in love with the bad man. And have no choice but forgive him and stay with him forever while you crack the ice off his heart”. I got exactly what I wanted! I love that we were left just as clueless as Mila. And even as we got answers to put the pieces together, there was still so much mystery. I was starting to get a little annoyed with her naivety, before the chapters even got into the double digits. But then, we got to enjoy stubborn Mila, and I was happy. I loved all the little pieces we got of Mila and Ronan. Who they are, how they connect. My favorite was their connection with Poe. Every mention of The Raven my heart melted even more. Yes, I did let go of an unexpected screech when Christian and Gianna made their way into the story. I was full hearteyes when we finally got Ronan’s POV. Ronan gave Mila air to breathe, and he eats Fruit Loops. Mila told him what to do in front of his men, and he listened. He never stopped surprising me! But when he saved Mila’s life, I definitely wasn’t surprised! Especially not when he did it a second time. Or third. I noted at chapter 19 ‘this book is a solid four stars, it’ll be a five when they fall in love’. So there ya go, five stars! “Mobster decency disorder” is my new favorite mafia romance line!
My Favorite Quotes:
•Moy Kotyonok
•”Ty dazhe na vkus sladkaya”
You even taste sweet.
•”Pomni. Ti eto prosila”
Remember. You asked for it.
•’She had a soft heart. I didn’t want to destroy it. I wanted it in the palm of my hand.’
•”Ya vyyebu vsyu lozh iz tebya”
I will f!&k all the lies out of you.
•”Tell me what you really want from me, kotyonok. You can have it. Anything besides letting you go.”
•”I know you’re trying to protect my feelings. And I think it’s disgusting.”
