Disclaimer: In exchange for this hotel review, I received a stay in Bangkok, Thailand in one of the Hotel Nikko’s Premier Corner rooms.

Though I’ve visited Bangkok many times, I haven’t changed the location of the hotel much. Generally, I try to stay near Nana, the de facto Middle Eastern neighborhood, because it’s close to both the BTS (skytrain), metro system, supermarkets, and uh, everything. But, staying somewhere familiar doesn’t promote further exploration of the Thai capital.

Consequently, I was glad to receive an offer to review the Hotel Nikko Bangkok, a newish property in the Japanese-centric district of Thonglo. Indeed, the majority of the clientele at this Okura Nikko Hotel property come from Japan; there’s even a large, mostly Japanese shopping center nearby in Ekkamai.

The Nikko Bangkok is a very short walk from the BTS Thonglo station, though the first time I walked by, I didn’t notice any obvious signs for the hotel (apparently, it’s written in Thai). Thus, I walked through what appeared to be an office building, rounded what turned out to be the Curve 55 lobby lounge, and made my way to check-in:

Check-in staff generously let me go quite early to the room, which sounded great after flying for roughly 24 hours + a long layover in Tokyo. It was at reception where I also noticed the main entrance for the hotel:

First impressions of nearly every facility and space was that the Nikko Bangkok was kept very clean; you might chalk that up to the fact that the hotel was only a couple of months old, but I’d say Japanese management played a big role in that.

…but how about my room?

My Premier Corner room was also a delight, quite clean, airy, and with good a/c (visiting Bangkok in April is hotter than other months, somehow!). That there was a “window” from the bathroom tub overlooking the bed seems to be an East Asian thing (don’t worry, there’s a shade, too). Unfortunately, I was too tired to even ask about trying the pillow menu– but if you’d like a suggestion, try Japanese buckwheat hull pillows for your home. Luckily, it was a very comfortable bed, overlooking some pretty sweet views of the ever-growing Thai metropolis:

The Nikko Bangkok also has a number of function/event rooms, and the Fuji Grand Ballroom with a capacity of 1250 cocktail party attendees. (I don’t have photos because the rooms were busy for wedding receptions)

OK, so the interior of the hotel looked solid, but how about its exterior sections? Although I didn’t swim, the pool area – which can also be used to host events – already looked worn and neglected. Not so much the pool itself, but the well-beaten tiles surrounding it. It appeared that there was a lot of wasted space, that really could be used to either have a small garden, or to add more sunbathing chairs, or for expanding the pool bar. Something, anything to distract me from the unappealing patio. As it’s still a relatively new hotel, perhaps they’re working on something.

Hungry? The Hotel Nikko Bangkok has you covered. Besides Curve 55 and the pool bar, they also have Hishou, the new neighborhood standard for Japanese fare, and The Oasis, its 6th floor restaurant specializing in breakfast, lunch, and Sunday brunch buffets, as well as á la carte dinners.

As I was busy most of the first day – sleeping and wandering, sometimes both – I only was able to try out their breakfast buffet the following day:

It’s your typical Southeast Asian hotel-buffet, but good! I definitely paid multiple visits to the Japanese and fresh juice stations, and went way overboard on asking for everything to be made peht peht, or Thai spicy. Still, I would have been satisfied with only salmon, miso soup, rose apples, and mangosteens. Oh, and the omelette bar was particularly fun.

— All in all, I had an enjoyable stay at the Hotel Nikko Bangkok, and would like to thank Ann and Swift for their assistance and hospitality. Next time, I’ll have to try Hishou, and one of their locally well-known lobby lounge desserts!

2019 Holiday Coffees: Celebratory Blends That Elevate the Ordinary

Every December, we look at some aspect of the vast array of holiday coffees on offer from roasters around the world. This year, we focus on blends — specifically, holiday-themed blends, as interpreted by roasters and available only during the holiday season (roughly November to February). Creating exciting holiday blends has become something of a year-end competition among good specialty roasters over the last few years. Gone are the days when a holiday blend was simply a way to sell aging green coffees left in the warehouse from earlier in the year, wrapped up in festive packaging and marketed as something special. And when you think about it, it may be more difficult to craft a fine blend than it is to nail the roast profile of a green coffee that’s already exceptional. Developing an original blend requires an open mind and full sensory attention, because the goal is to create an entirely new coffee experience.

The Scorecard

Of the 56 coffees we received to consider for this report — roasted in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Thailand — nine rose to the top with scores ranging from 91 to 94. There were quite a few 90s as well, too many of them to review here (14, to be exact, which means that a full 23 coffees rated 90 or higher, nearly half of all the submissions we received.)

Benchmarking with National Brands

Starting with this tasting report, and moving forward into 2020, we plan to include, when possible, reviews of what we are calling “benchmark samples,” i.e., samples of coffees of similar origin or style to those submitted by roasters for a given report. We will purchase these coffees anonymously from national (or large regional) brands. The idea is to give readers an idea of how the best of the coffees we review in any given month (usually current offerings from smaller regional roasting companies) stack up when compared to samples of similar, more widely distributed coffees from larger brands. This month, for example, we bought holiday blends from Starbucks and Peet’s Coffee as our benchmarks. (See below for more on that.)

The Influence of Natural-Processed Coffees

If there is a theme in this report beyond the skill of the roasters who crafted these compelling blends, it’s their imaginative use of natural-process coffees, or coffees that were dried in the whole fruit, rather than after removal of the soft fruit residue, as is the case with more conventional wet-process or washed coffees. In seven of the 10 blends we review here the more fruit-forward profiles of the natural-process coffees are played against the usually lighter, brighter profiles of washed-process beans, with distinctive and intriguing results.

Hong Kong’s Plat Coffee Roastery submitted a Holiday Blend that tied for the top score at 94, comprised of a washed-process and a natural-process coffee, both from Ethiopia — resulting in a cleanly fruit-toned cup with notes of strawberry, sandalwood and lemon verbena.

Red Rooster Coffee Roaster’s Holiday Sweet blend is no stranger to our annual holiday report; this year’s version scored 93. Head roaster Tony Greatorex says, “My goal each year with the Holiday Sweet is to find the sweetest combination of coffees possible. I’m also looking to create a blend that is so seamless in flavor that it could be mistaken for a single-origin. Historically, it has been heavy on high-toned natural and washed Ethiopias, and this year is no different. In the last two years, I’ve rounded out the profile with clean, sweet, and balanced washed Colombias, due to an abundance of high quality coffees coming from that country.”

Lucky Cafe’s Holiday Blend, also at 93, is comprised of two Ethiopias, a natural and a washed, and a washed Kenya. The Kenya (red currant, cocoa nib) grounds the blend, while the natural Ethiopia (blackberry) gives it fruity levity.

Coming in at 92 is Canadian roaster Detour’s Holiday Blend, combining an Ethiopia Guji natural-process, a Costa Rica Tarrazu white honey-process, and a Kenya Nyeri washed. Head roaster Dan Sherrington says he was going for “a dynamic, approachable and balanced cup, a real crowd-pleaser.” Specifically thinking of the holiday season, he says, “We think some combination of fruit, chocolate, spice and sugary sweetness creates a really nice flavor profile, basically a dessert-like coffee.”

Similar in style is Temple Coffee’s Festivity Blend, a fruit- and nut-driven coffee that represents collaboration between Camilla Yuan (head roaster) and Ed Whitman (director of coffee). After several rounds of failed prototype blends, Yuan and Whitman created their own blends separately and cupped them blind. Whitman says, “It was unanimous. Camilla’s blend leaped off the table for its fruit-forward complexity.”

The Open Seas Wonderland Blend (91) is made up of a washed Nicaragua and a natural-process Ethiopia Sidama, which, according to owner-head roaster Bryce Roszell combines two great single-origins that, together, take us to a new place that neither origin could do alone. He says, “I find that memory and nostalgia is so directly invoked by food and drink, and when I taste this coffee, it takes me back to my mom baking gingerbread cookies and Herb Alpert’s Christmas Album playing in the background. In Wonderland, I want to connect people to this blend of warmth and excitement that the holidays bring through the types of notes that can resonate on a deeper nostalgic level, as well.”

Rounding out blends built around a combination of natural and washed-process coffees is Modern Times’ Invisible Sun God (92), perhaps the most original of the blends reviewed here and intended for both brewed and espresso applications. It starts with two natural-process coffees, an Ethiopia and a Brazil (which also constitute the base for Modern Times’ Guardian Spirit Espresso Blend), then adds a traditionally washed-process Kenya. Lily Quiros, head roaster, says, “The pomegranate/cranberry/red wine elements of the Kenya adds a holiday fruit aroma and warming flavor profile that our normal espresso blend does not have and plays well as an espresso or a pour over.” This coffee should appeal to those who like restrained, nicely nuanced darker roasts.

One Washed-Process and an All-Peru Blend

Tied for the top score at 94 is the Highwire Celebration Blend, selected by Rick Avella and Eric Hashimoto to complement “colder weather and rich meals.” The artwork on the bag (by Katie Miller) evokes a classic woodcut with a peaceful winter scene, and the coffee inside is chocolaty and floral-toned. Avella says, “It shouldn’t taste like any other coffee,” and it doesn’t. It’s quite distinctive and worthy of any stocking this year.

Kickapoo’s entry, the Winter Solstice Blend (92), is a blend of coffees from three different growing areas of Peru, all processed by the washed method, but using a “dry” ferment (no water added to the tank), that nets a crisply sweet, rich-toned cup.

A Successful Dark-Roasted Benchmark Coffee

We taste Peet’s coffees periodically, and this year’s Peet’s Dark Roast Holiday Blend we review in conjunction with this report as our benchmark coffee, at a solid score of 86. It’s a blend of wet-hulled Sumatra Lintong and washed-process Panama Finca Don Bosco. It’s quite dark-roasted, but maintains the character of the green coffees while giving lovers of dark roasts the big, chocolaty, smoky profile many find appealing.

And a Little Scrooge to Keep Things Real

The other benchmark coffee we tested was the Starbucks Christmas Blend, described on the brand’s website as comprised of “Latin American and mellow Indonesian” coffees. It’s essentially Starbucks’ version of a non-vintage wine, intended to taste as similar as possible year in and year out. There’s nothing wrong with that; some people like consistency. Since 2015, Starbucks has added to the mix a “rare, aged Sumatra coffee.” Though Starbucks’ website doesn’t elaborate, Sumatra coffees intended for aging are typically held in special warehouses, usually in Singapore, for two or more years, with the bags regularly rotated to even out moisture. This rather expensive process reduces acidity, modestly fattens body and contributes a musty character that can take on a variety of sensory guises, from spicy to cedary, smoky to chocolaty, grapefruity to plain musty. However, the likely small amount of aged Sumatra that made it into this year’s Starbucks Christmas Blend can’t do much to lift the blend’s disappointing character, which appears to be driven mainly by an aggressive dark roast — considerably darker than the Peet’s blend we review this month. Three of our main descriptors were rubbery cocoa, soapy florals and petrol.

Tech billionaire — and noted Twitter hothead — Elon Musk wrote yet another surprising tweet on Wednesday: an apology.

Musk had come under fire earlier this week after he nonchalantly referred to one of the British rescuers involved in the Thai cave rescue as a “pedo guy” — implying that he was a pedophile. Despite the immediate outcry, Musk initially refused to back off his comments.

The subject of Musk’s tweet, Vernon Unsworth, had slammed the tech leader’s efforts to aid in the cave rescue by building a miniature submarine, calling it a “PR stunt” in an interview with CNN. In response, Musk launched his unfounded attack.

“His actions against me do not justify my actions against him, and for that I apologize to Mr. Unsworth and to the companies I represent as leader,” Musk wrote on Wednesday, after lightly disparaging Unsworth once more.

The saga started with what seemed like a promising philanthropic effort: After 12 young soccer players became trapped in a cave in Thailand, Musk offered up the help of engineers from SpaceX and the Boring Company. He also deployed experts from Tesla to help design a pod that could be used to transport members of the soccer team who were stranded.

The boys were eventually rescued in a massive international rescue operation with divers carrying them through the cave on stretchers — a mission that did not end up using Musk’s submarine.

While many lauded Musk’s efforts, a fair share of people (including Unsworth) mocked his attempts to involve himself in the rescue at all. This back-and-forth ultimately culminated in one of Musk’s Twitter rants, with a slew of insults slung at any who dare impugn his work.

Musk’s critics have seized on the latest Twitter attacks as yet another sign of his thin-skinned nature and rash temperament — something he has said he’s working on. As his recent remarks indicate, that effort might still be a work in progress.

It’s unclear whether these efforts were utilized during the rescue, but Musk’s tweets suggest that the engineers were on hand to provide other logistical help as well. A SpaceX spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Got more great feedback from Thailand. Primary path is basically a tiny, kid-size submarine using the liquid oxygen transfer tube of Falcon rocket as hull. Light enough to be carried by 2 divers, small enough to get through narrow gaps. Extremely robust.

Musk then noted that he was “iterating” with Thai cave experts to determine the optimal design for some sort of “escape pod.” Following these conversations, he landed on the idea of using a “kid-size submarine” that could potentially help shuttle the trapped Thai boys to safety.

Some wondered whether Musk would be able to complete the project in time to contribute to the rescue, given the extreme pressure the team was facing from impending rains. He appeared to think he could — but suggested that the submarine might also be relevant for future endeavors if it didn’t play a role in the team’s efforts this time around.

He also offered a glimpse of the submarine getting tested in a California swimming pool.

Roughly a day later, Musk offered another Twitter dispatch after visiting “Cave 3,” and said he would be leaving the “mini-sub” in Thailand in case it could be useful down the line. As one Thailand-based translator tweeted a few days later, the Thai Navy did huddle with SpaceX engineers to discuss future applications of Musk’s technology.

The last of the Thai players was successfully pulled from the cave on July 10. Divers helped carry the boys — who were equipped with scuba masks — through the winding pathway of the cave on stretchers, writes Vox’s Radhika Viswanathan.

Though rescuers initially said they were going to teach the boys to swim out of the flooded cave accompanied by expert divers, on Wednesday, we learned that instead the boys had been given medication and put on stretchers before they were passed from diver-to-diver through the cave.

Musk cheered the rescuers following the mission’s success. The mini-submarine was not ultimately used.

This is where things started to sour: While Thai rescuers praised Musk’s technology, some said it wasn’t “practical” for their plans. “Although [Musk’s] technology is good and sophisticated, it’s not practical for this mission,” Narongsak Osatanakorn, the head of the joint command center overseeing the operation, told the Guardian.

Musk quickly hit back at Osatanakorn, noting that he was “not the subject matter expert,” and expressed doubts about his credentials, according to The Guardian. Musk added that Osantanakorn was “inaccurately described as rescue chief.”

He later shared his email correspondence with Richard Stanton, one of the members of the rescue team, in an effort to prove his point — and seemed bewildered by the backlash toward his attempt to help.

This reaction has shaken my opinion of many people. We were asked to create a backup option & worked hard to do so. Checked with dive team many times to confirm it was worthwhile. Now it’s there for anyone who needs it in future. Something’s messed up if this is not a good thing.

Given his recent contributions, some wondered if Musk would also chip in and help with other ongoing crises, with one Twitter user attempting to goad the entrepreneur into bringing clean water to Flint, Michigan.

“I heard a bunch of people saying there’s NO WAY you could help get clean water to Flint, Michigan,” the user tweeted, citing others who had undermined Musk. Musk made a commitment to fixing the issue almost on the spot. (Others swiftly parroted this tweet and tried to provoke Musk into addressing topics as varied as their friends’ love lives and crumbling national infrastructure.)

All of that brings us to the explosive “pedo” comment.

As Vox’s Emily Stewart details, Unsworth, the British diver involved in the cave rescue, wasn’t quite as kind as Osantanakorn in his take on Musk’s submarine. In an interview with CNN, Unsworth slammed the pod as merely a “PR stunt,” and said “it had absolutely no chance of working,” noting that the device would not have been able to navigate corners and obstacles given how rigid it was.

Musk snapped, suggesting that he didn’t recall seeing Unsworth at the rescue site and saying that he would produce a video that would prove the submarine could, indeed, work. Seemingly out of nowhere, he then called Unsworth a “pedo guy” — accusing him of being a pedophile. It’s an insult that’s become common in some far-right online circles, and even compared to Musk’s history of incendiary tweets, the comment was striking:

“We will make one of the mini-sub/pod going all the way to Cave 5 no problemo. Sorry pedo guy, you really did ask for it,” he wrote in a since-deleted tweet.

This got overwhelming pushback, with many Twitter users arguing that calling someone a pedophile is a serious allegation that can’t just be lobbed as a casual insult. Tesla’s stock also took a dip after Musk’s statement and multiple investors in the company expressed concerns.

Musk later responded to some of this criticism by writing simply, “Bet ya a signed dollar it’s true.” Unsworth has said he’s considering legal action over the remark.

Following the blowback, Musk begrudgingly apologized to Unsworth about his “pedo guy” remarks and said they were made “in anger,” given the negative reactions to his “act of kindness.”

This isn’t the first time Musk has said he needs to temper his Twitter comments. He recently expressed regrets about his inclination to go on the offensive on the social media platform.

“I have made the mistaken assumption — and I will attempt to be better at this — of thinking that because somebody is on Twitter and is attacking me that it is open season,” Musk told Bloomberg. “And that is my mistake. I will correct it.”

This apology seems like a good place to start.
