Narrator[Izuku]: Each year, less than one in three hundred examinee’s make it in!
Narrator[Izuku](as the chapter shows All Might, Endeavor, and Best Jeanist on the panel): Gaze upon the man who turned down the National Valor Prize “All Might”!
Narrator[Izuku](as the chapter shows All Might, Endeavor, and Best Jeanist on the panel): And here is the man with the highest tally of resolved cases in history! The combustion-type hero “Endeavor”!
Narrator[Izuku](as the chapter shows All Might, Endeavor, and Best Jeanist on the panel): Not least is the recipient of the “best Jeanist”! If you want to be remembered as a truly “great” hero, then enrollment at U.A. is essential!

Present Mic: using each of your individual quirks, dispatch as many “villains” as you can. Your goal, listieners, is to rack up a high score! And don’t think about discreetly attacking any other competitors or any of that nasty anti-hero stuff, because thats against the rules, capisce!?
Tenya: Excuse me, may I ask a question!?
Present Mic: !(I’ll be taking that as making a surprised face ig lol)
Tenya: On the handout, it says there are clearly four types of villains listed! Such an error would be the height of embarrassment for a top-tier national academy of UA’s caliber! The reason we are seated here today is because we need guidance on the path to becoming model heroes!
[Tenya pointing at Izuku]
Tenya: Moreover, what’s with you? Yeah, you, curly haired kid! Can’t you sit still for a second… you’re distracting! If you think UA is some pleasure jaunt, then leave this place at once!

Present Mic: The fourth kind of villains you’ll encounter is worth zero points! Lets call them “arena traps”! Have any of you ever played super mario brother before!?

Present Mic: You remember those things that’d go thowmp on you!? There’s a thing like that in each area! Their “gimmick” is that they rampage when crowded!

NPC(2): This is really starting to resemble a video game.
Present Mic: Well, that’s enough for me!I’ll leave you all with a presentation on the “school precepts” of this academy of mine! As a certain “hero” by the name of Napoleon Bonaparte once said “A true hero never stops overcoming the misfortunes in life”!
Present Mic: Now let’s move to the main event “plus ultra”, and may you all gladly suffer the trails to come!
[Izuku stares at his paper with his area nervously]

[Izuku stays in shock and gets ready to run as everyone passes him]
Izuku: Is this some big joke!? I’ve gotta escape, but then I’ll get no points!

Izuku(thinking): Everything All Might gave me will go to waste!

NPC in the observation room(1): Look. That boy has exhibited no merit whatsoever and that is exactly why those times he does rise to the top, will be all the more pronounced! That is the hero's principle!

Izuku(thinking): Clench your asshole super right and scream the word from the bottom of your heart!

[Izuku punches the robot with one for all]

[Ochako, Tenya, and everyone else on the field looks at Izuku with amazement as he begins to fall out of the sky]

Izuku(thinking): It’s the same situation as back then!
[Panel shows the sludge villain attack]

Izuku(thinking): Duh, this is All Mights power!
[Panel shows a cup of water]
Izuku(thinking): It was only ten months! I’ve only scratched the surface of controlling it! All I can do right now is house a borrowed power! I can’t believe I got such a big head, even if it was for only a moment!
Izuku(thinking): Get a grip, man! All I’ve been given so far is the right to stand on the starting line! Nothing more!
Izuku(Thinking): Think man! What do I do? What do I do!?
[Izuku sobbing as he falls in the air]

LET’S NOT worry at this point about Suella Braverman’s Tory Party positioning; her blatant leadership ambitions; her probable desire to shift the Conservative Party into a far right position post-General Election that is fundamentally removed from traditional Tory values, let’s instead just focus on what Braverman, the current British Home Secretary, appears to be trying to do.
Perhaps the most fundamental role of the third highest governmental office in the land is to ensure the security of the citizens of the United Kingdom: to maintain law and order and keep our streets safe. Braverman has apparently decided that her role is no such thing. Rather it is that of a right-wing agent provocateur, a culture warrior pitching incontinently into street protests, geopolitics, and Tory internal battles, to conflate them all into some extreme right wing worldview that seeks to pitch citizen against citizen, colleague against colleague, friend against neighbour.
Braverman’s stigmatising of those British people publicly expressing a pro-Palestinian view against unrestrained Israeli military violence against the civilian population of Gaza as “hate marchers”; the enabling dog whistle to the fascist right by asserting the police are harder on them than muslim demonstrators and that they are somehow hard done to, and the pretence that a pro-Palestinian march is intrinsically inimical to the values of the Armistice Day commemorations, must be the first time in living memory that a British Home Secretary has actually incited street level criminal violence, rather than attempted to prevent it. And this, on a day that commemorates the end of conflict.
Under any normal Conservative government, Braverman, with her unilateral outriding, serial disloyalty and deeply undemocratic instincts, would be out on her ear. The enfeebled Rishi Sunak is either unwilling or unable to rid his front bench of Braverman’s wholly toxic presence. Whatever one’s views on the current Middle Eastern conflict, we should all be agreed that on a weekend of reflection, respect and national solidarity, this vituperative, rabble-rousing, undermining and unprecedented politician should be cast from the very office of state allegedly designed to keep us safe. Today of all days, the memory of our fallen deserves better - and so do we.

Everyone gets “The 90s” look wrong so let’s fix it
If you weren’t here for part one, lemme sum it up real fast:
Okay, all up to speed? We’re being served 80s throwback stuff with the serial numbers scratched off, re-labeled as yo totally 90s. What we’ve got now isn’t completely wrong, but I’m telling you, there’s so much gold left unmined.
As we saw in part one with Memphis Milano, these things get messy. Trends don’t start and end neatly every ten years. The first wave of 90s throwback attempts focused on the early part of the decade, and nobody since really pushed to represent the other seven years. Well, if you really wanna do something, I guess you gotta do it yourself.
I have suggestions. Get your flannel ready, we’ve got a lot of ground to cover.
Analog Grunge
SURRRRRRRGE or uh, Grunge, is probably the look that defines the decade best. The big kickoff point here is Nirvana - after a shiny pop-dominated music scene in the 80s, Nevermind was like a breath of fresh smog.
Your design has to look like it survived a nuclear blast, then was run over by your parents’ Buick a couple of times.
Rust. Dirt. Scuffs and scrapes. Signs of distress.
Handwritten or scribbled illustrations.
Low-rent aesthetics. Torn paper shapes, label maker or typewriter fonts.
If there’s a Comic Sans for the 90s, it’s “distressed typewriter font.” Seriously, it’s mandatory. When I pulled images for this post I could not escape typewriter fonts. I don’t think you couldn’t call yourself a respectable designer without it. Just look at how much mileage old-timey typewriters and label makers got:

I think another component to Grunge is sort of an anti-digital, pro-analog message. My pet theory is home computers went from being a semi-common novelty in 1990 to an essential gotta-have-it purchase in every American home by ‘99. Desktop publishing apps made it almost too easy to make pixel-perfect, clean, uniform designs.
But digital perfection is the enemy of Grunge. Analog means authenticity.
So you had a whole gaggle of designers running in the other direction. Sure you could use a computer, but your work absolutely had to look like it didn’t come from one. As much as possible, incorporate hand-drawn artwork, scribbles, dust and splotches. Write text with chicken scratch if you have to. As much as you could make your multimillion dollar ad campaign look like it came from the margins of some high schoolers’ math homework, the better.
Factory Pomo
Not everyone was running away from digital, though. Many designers were embracing computer apps - and I think that’s where Factory Pomo first came into being. Graphic designer Froyo Tam designed the above logo as an example - Factory Pomo is one of those things that once you see an example, you can’t stop seeing it.
Strong, basic geometric primitives with inverted, contrasting colors
Tall typography
Art Deco style rivets and spikes
Want your logo to look futuristic and modern? Stick it in a circle and put some triangles around. Invert half the colors, then another half.
Max Krieger has a great writeup on the probable inflection point: Tomorrowland. As the story goes, Tomorrowland at Disney - the part of the park meant to look like it’s from the future - would very quickly look very outdated each time they tried to update it. Instead, in 1994 they decided to own being outdated. They came up with a ridiculously fun “timeless” futuristic look, mixing industrial design with Jules Verne. Factory Pomo’s signature was all over the blueprints.
The look quickly escaped the theme park and was especially prevalent in the booming mid 90s home computer market. It’s the Packard Bell cyborg, it’s the logo in Video Toaster. If you caught that The X Files logo earlier is both Factory Pomo with the tall type and X in a ring AND Grunge with the typewriter X in the background, you win 5 bonus Pogs.
EDIT: aaaaaaa How could I forget the most famous example! The “Always Coca Cola” ad campaign!
Back to the name - “Factory Pomo” is a relatively new term - It didn’t get coined until 2017 through several Facebook design groups. It didn’t have a name for like... 25 years. How’s that possible, you may wonder? Weren’t designers following a defined style? Well, yes and no. I think people were designing stuff to look a certain way, but it’s less a game of “this is what the aesthetic looks like” and more like a game of telephone.
If you do an architecture tour in a major city, you’ll learn that every building and skyscraper is classified to a specific architectural movement. Every building that is but ones built in the last 20-30 years. Newer buildings have to wait a few decades for official classification. Historians need time and perspective to figure out what emerging trends in architecture are going on, whose work influenced who, that sort of thing.
Designing a logo for Slim Jims or Cherry Coke takes considerably less time than constructing a skyscraper, but I think the same principle holds true. It’s really difficult to tell what’s a trend and what’s a fad when you’re living in the moment. I couldn’t tell you what’s the defining aesthetic for the 2020s right now. It’ll be obvious in 2053, but right now, no clue.
Enough time has passed between the nineties and today that we can pick this stuff apart easily. Maybe if you’re lucky, you can be the first to classify these design movements, too.
