Where Mexican Folk Ballads Meet Trap Music

LOS ANGELES — When Francisco Rodriguez, 31, was incarcerated in a federal prison near San Diego, he began writing songs. He had grown up in Santa Maria, Calif., listening to corridos, a form of traditional Mexican ballads that his parents and grandparents loved, so that is what he gravitated toward writing.

Corridos are ballads born of an oral tradition of storytelling that goes back to the 19th century. Whether it’s the daring tale of a real-life revolutionary or a romantic saga set in rural Mexico, a corrido comes with a narrative arc. Many are based on real events: The “Corrido of Joaquín Murrieta” tells the tale of a bandit and folk hero from California’s Gold Rush years.

In prison, Mr. Rodriguez wrote some about the lives of his relatives in Mexico but focused more on what he knew from personal experience: the perils of trafficking arms across the United States-Mexico border. He wrote about the street hustlers and drug-dealers that he knew from his neighborhood.

Over time, he also experimented with changing the traditional corrido sound based on his upbringing — namely, infusing the acoustic guitar and accordion accompaniments with a quicker pace, including hip-hop beats based on the music he listened to growing up in Southern California in the 1990s.

That form of music is now taking off. Mr. Rodriguez, who goes by Shrek and has been out of prison for two years, is the lead vocalist of Arsenal Efectivo, one of several popular “trapcorrido” groups influenced by rap and hip-hop.

(Trap, an Atlanta-born rap subgenre, is characterized by sharp snares and booming bass, as well as hazy, minor-key melodies. But the word “trap” has become a common prefix for hip-hop-influenced sub genres, regardless of whether they share the sonic qualities of trap music.)

In his dressing room before a recent sold-out show at the Forum in the Inglewood neighborhood of Los Angeles, Mr. Rodriguez reflected on the evolution of his sound: “I left the drug dealing and trapping life and pursued music after I was released from prison, and that’s how all of this was formed.”

He was wearing flashy jewelry and a shiny diamond grill on his teeth; his bandmates and friends wore T-shirts with the word “trapcorridos” across their chests.

“When I first started my band, we were dressing in crocodile boots and wearing big tejanas and sombreros,” Mr. Rodriguez said. “But now I’m dressing in blinged-out clothes and blinged-out jewelry, I got a grill in my teeth, and that’s something that has never been seen in our culture — Mexicans who wear a grill and sing corridos.”

Jesus Ortiz Paz, 22, the lead singer of Fuerza Regida, another group from Los Angeles that sings trapcorridos, said: “We’re from the streets. We weren’t born in Mexico, and we’re not singing about the ranchos.”

Corridos, Born of Experience

In the latter part of the 20th century, as organized drug trafficking networks grew more powerful in Mexico, corrido records reflected the strife associated with the violence of the underground drug trade, creating a subgenre known as narcocorridos.

Los Tigres Del Norte, a Mexican norteño band that formed in San Jose, Calif., became famous for a 1974 song they covered called “Contrabanda Y Traiccion,” about a relationship between a woman and her drug-dealing lover and their travels to Los Angeles from San Antonio. The woman shoots her husband after learning of his infidelity, and escapes with his money and drug stash.

Chalino Sanchez, a native of Sinaloa, Mexico, also helped popularize narcocorridos. He sang embellished first-person accounts of shootouts with police, immigration, murder and survival that became popular, especially in southeast Los Angeles, in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

But while the trapcorrido musicians of today grew up hearing corridos, and could relate to some of the themes, their lived experiences were very different. They grew up in metropolitan California cities. They listened to hip-hop and rap music. They wear Air Jordans, Gucci and Balenciaga. Rap culture was a formative part of their upbringing.

Jose Leon, known as Mint, designs clothing for Arsenal Efectivo and other trapcorrido groups. He combines expensive fashion with urban street wear — embroidered jackets and expensive athletic shoes.

“This movement is about something different,” said Mr. Leon, 33, minutes before Arsenal Efectivo took the stage in Inglewood. He called it a trend born of the second-generation Mexican-American experience.

“All of us grew up in places like South Central, and some of us grew up in the ’hood,” he said. “People used to wear hats and cowboy boots, but these boys don’t want to wear that anymore. They want to wear what they wear in the streets. It’s a whole new wave.”

Josh Kun, a professor and director of the University of Southern California Annenberg School of Communication, believes that corridos, as a form of music that exists along and on both sides of the United States-Mexico border, lend themselves naturally to collaboration with other genres.

“It’s really important that this new development is put into a long history of corridos on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border that dates back to the 19th century,” he said. “Since the 1980s, corridos have been mixing with other genres like techno, electro pop, and in the ’90s to electro banda to hip-hop.”

Dr. Kun also said the evolution of trapcorridos fits into a larger wave of trap music ascendancy. “Trap has become the global streaming genre,” he said. “Every region in the world has grabbed on to trap as a musical language.”

Still, Jimmy Humilde, who runs a label called Rancho Humilde that manages several trapcorrido groups including Arsenal Efectivo, believes that there is something unique about trapcorridos in Southern California.

“This is the voice of young Chicano culture, and we’re representing Los Angeles culture with this music,” he said. “When have you ever heard a corrido song about living in South Central? There’s never been anything like this, and that’s why we are calling it regional urban music.”

As a testament to its appeal, music venues across California are selling out for trap-corrido shows. The bands are also traveling to other states and to Mexico, one of their biggest markets. (There is a growing trapcorrido scene there as well.)

“We feel like Selena,” said Mr. Paz, the Fuerza Regida singer, referring to the Mexican-American singer who became one of the most celebrated singers of the 20th century before her death in 1995. “We’re Mexican-American and we’re going down to Mexico just like she did and selling out shows just like she did.”

‘El Corrido de Nipsey Hussle’

There’s another reason trapcorrido music feels serendipitous right now.

Musical collaboration between black and Latino artists is not uncommon. But racial tension in South Central Los Angeles, especially in the early 1990s, was fraught between these demographic groups, both caught in a system of limited access to economic and social resources.

As the Mexican population increased in Los Angeles in the 1990s and 2000s, so did the exodus of African-American families who were buying property in regions outside of Los Angeles, like the Inland Empire, an area that encompasses cities in Riverside and San Bernardino.

There were huge brawls in Los Angeles schools and violence between black and Latino gangs, including as recently as 2014, when several Latino gang members firebombed the homes of black families living in a Boyle Heights housing project.

Some in South Central see trapcorrido music as a corrective, though not an antidote, to racial tensions.

“This movement is also about African-Americans who are buying tickets to the concerts,” said Mr. Leon, the clothing designer. “That’s what trapcorridos are about, a mixture of what we know.”

Rolando Casimiro, 28, believes the music can even serve to create better relationships between black and Latino communities in Los Angeles. After the fatal shooting of the rapper Nipsey Hussle this year, Mr. Casimiro, who goes by “Faraon de Oro,” wrote a tribute song called “El Corrido de Nipsey Hussle.”

The song begins with Nipsey’s birth in 1985 and recounts his success and dedication to his community through a first-person telling. The narrative ends with his death, and a personal plea to end violence and for all people to unite as one.

Within a day, the song had more than half a million views on YouTube. “It felt weird to me that there weren’t any corridos about black people,” said Mr. Casimiro, a child of first-generation immigrants from the southern state of Guerrero, Mexico.

But the news of Nipsey Hussle’s death was a blow to many in Los Angeles. “I started writing the song for him,” Mr. Casimiro said. “The more I learned about him, the more I thought that we had just lost someone really big.”

Jennifer Jones, a professor at the University of Illinois-Chicago, and the author of the book “The Browning of the New South,” believes the popularity of trapcorridos tracks with the changing demographics of the United States.

“Mexican kids are growing up with trap music in the South,” she said. “They’re fusing those two pieces of their lives, growing up in black neighborhoods, and are attentive to how black culture has shaped the south and are also a part of new wave of Latino settlement in these places.”

In that, Jimmy Humilde, the record label owner, sees longevity. “We’re selling out shows in places that we’ve never been before,” he said. “We’re the future.”

These Are The Hottest Places To Go In Ibiza At Night

Ibiza is one of the most famous places in the world for nightlife. It’s full of superclubs, party hotels, beach bars and some really, really nice restaurants. During the summer months, many of the world’s leading DJs take up residences in the superclubs and hotels. And if you fancy joining them, here’s our guide to the island’s best nightlife – as well as a few suggestions for when you need a night off.

And while you read, here’s a playlist to get you started.

The Superclubs

David Guetta at Pacha

During the summer months, Ibiza’s all about the superclubs, which are largely found outside of town. They can be expensive (it’s best to go for drinks at a bar in town first), they really are where the party’s at, and should be experienced at least once.

Pacha

Pacha has been open since 1973. It’s just outside Ibiza Town, and is the only superclub that opens year-round. Specialising in House music, residencies during the summer months include the world’s biggest DJs, like David Guetta.

For something a bit different, try the smaller downstairs spaces – the Global and Funky Rooms. That’s where you’ll find a more diverse musical line-up, including R&B, hip-hop and disco, and occasionally stage live gigs. You can also chill out under the stars on Pacha’s rooftop terrace and restaurant.

Privilege

Officially the world’s biggest nightclub, Privilege is big enough to host up to 10,000 clubbers. It’s a vast aircraft hanger-like space, found just outside the village of San Rafael. Underneath its 25 metre high ceiling you’ll find gardens, chill out areas, an impressive dome and lavish stage sets.

Amnesia

Amnesia is now over 40 years old, one of the island’s most beloved clubbing institutions. It’s never far from the world’s best club lists.

Found between Ibiza Town and San Rafael, it’s famous for its superstar DJs – including Carl Cox and Paul Van Dyk. It’s regular, well known parties include Cream, Music On and Cocoon.

But the real star is its technical specs. The club’s custom-made soundsystem is one of the most powerful around. The dance floor is surrounded by ice cannons, which blast revelers with plume of cooling, and very cool-looking, fog. The stage is equally impressive, DJs perform from within a giant high-tech pyramid set.

Hï

Glitterbox at Hï

Formerly known as Space, Hï is by Playa d’en Bossa beach, to the west of Ibiza town. It’s got very impressive light shows, and an equally impressive view from the open-air terraces. There’s even a DJ booth in the club’s unisex bathroom. One of Hï’s biggest parties is Glitterbox, who host two nights of classic disco and house music a week. Expect some of the island’s most glamorous dancers and a wild ‘anything goes’ attitude.

Eden

Defected at Eden

Based in San Antonio town centre, Eden is probably the most accessible of Ibiza’s superclubs. Previously home to Gatecrasher and Pete Tong, after a major facelift, it’s now a massive theatre-like space. In addition to regular club nights from house and trance names like Defected, Eden will be hosting more gigs and live music events.

DC10

DC10 is an alternative to the more slick superclubs. Found in a former Finca right by the airport, DC10 is a little more off the beaten track. What it lacks in glitz and glamour, it more than makes up for in tunes. Specialising in techno, and with parties that regularly spill out onto the open air terrace, DC10 is a club for those who take their music seriously.

The Beaches

The Sunset Strip, San Antonio

The Sunset Strip

San Antonio’s beachfront bars are famous for their views. Not just of the shimmering waters of the Mediterranean, but of the uninterrupted sunset. Sitting back with a drink at Cafe Mambo or Cafe del Mar and watching the sun go down is an Ibiza tradition. The sight is often so spectacular that it draws applause from the strip’s patrons.

Nikki Beach

One of the most exclusive spots to spend the day on the island, Nikki Beach is a beach club, restaurant, pool, bar and boutique, just outside the town of Santa Eulalia. At weekends during the summer, the club stays open until late. Head there for a very nice open-air dinner.

Benirras Beach

Ibiza’s original hippy spirit is alive on the north coast. Every sunday evening during the summer, thousands gather on the beach to “drum down the sunset”. It’s become one of the most popular parties around, and so it can be difficult to find somewhere to park if you turn up too late in the day.

But despite the crowds, the laid-back vibe still remains. Head down early on in the day to bag a spot – there’s a nearby colourful flea market nearby, or beach-front bars and restaurants while you’re waiting.

Pukka Up

During the summer, Ibiza is almost as popular with sailing enthusiasts as it is with clubbers. And you’ll find plenty of boat parties setting off from the island’s harbours. The biggest, and possibly the best, is Pukka Up, which sets sail from San Antonio twice a week.

Tickets to Pukka Up’s boat parties will normally also include entry to one of the island’s superclubs after you get back to shore, so make for a good value night out.

The Hotels

Ushuaia

With so much going on in Ibiza, you might find that you don’t even have to leave your hotel to find the party. Several of the island’s top hotels are known for hosting club nights and gigs.

Ushuaïa

Ushuaïa is a 5-star hotel, home to the biggest open-air club on the island. It’s daytime and evening parties are right by the hotel’s pool. One of Ushuaïa’s biggest parties happens at the start of August every year, when BBC Radio 1 DJs take over the hotel. And if the on-site music catches your attention, Ushuaïa also offers DJ and production classes in its recording studio.

Stay there

Ibiza Rocks

Ibiza Rocks is one of the biggest names in Ibiza’s live music scene, and most of the venues are based around San Antonio’s S’Estanyol beach. Their flagship Ibiza Rocks Hotel invites big names like Craig David and Stormzy to host weekly pool parties throughout the summer months.

Each summer, the Ibiza Rocks music festival comes to town, which is a bit more rock and indie themed. Recent headliners have included Royal Blood and Wolf Alice.

Stay there

Destino

Destino is Pacha’s 4-star resort. It’s got pride of place at the top of the Cap Martinet cliff, just to the east of Ibiza Town. It overlooks Talamanca Bay and has its own club, TOX, which occasionally stages intimate after-parties from big names. Expect open-air parties, with gigs and DJ sets taking place from the early evening through to midnight at the heart of the complex.

LGBTQ

Clubbing in Ibiza is generally very inclusive. There aren’t many exclusively LGBTQ nightclubs on the island, but many of the big clubs are very gay-friendly. However, if you’re looking for the heart of Ibiza’s queer action, this is where to go.

Calle de la Virgen

Found in the heart of the Dalt Vila, Calle de la Virgen (AKA Carrer la Mare de Deu) is the heart of gay Ibiza. A traditional narrow street, the area is home to several gay bars, small and intimate, to large and lively.

The nearby Carrer d’Alfonso XII is also worth checking out for two bars in particular. SÔD (Soap at Dome) is home to one of Ibiza Town’s most popular terraces, offering a lively atmosphere and great views of the Dalt Vila’s historic walls. Bar MonaLisa is a stylish nightspot which specialises in cocktails.

Lola’s

Ibiza’s only dedicated LGBTQ club, Lola’s Disco was one of the island’s first nightspots, opening in the 1970s, and has remained a popular destination ever since. Also found on Carrer d’Alfonso XII, the small, but lively club has go-go dancers, themed nights and music and drinks until 6am.

The Night Off

Partied a bit too hard? Having a break from the clubs? If you’re not lounging by the pool or on the beach, here are some cultural things to do in Ibiza.

The Old Town

The historic heart of Ibiza Town, the Dalt Vila (which translated as “Upper Town”), is a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are more than 2500 years’ worth of history within the ancient fortified city walls. And it’s also a great place to spend a night.

Cinema Paradiso

During the summer, the best way to catch a movie is at one of Cinema Paradiso’s open-air screenings. They pop up in some pretty stunning locations around the island, including the Dalt Vila. If you really want to watch a cult classic in style, they also specialise in private screenings, where they’ll bring their big screen to your villa or holiday home.

Luna Llena de Arte

Luna Llena de Arte is a night-time art fair, which takes place once a month during the summer. It roughly coincides with the full moon, when the fair fills the streets of Santa Gertrudis village with art displays, performances and DJ sets.

The Restaurants

Amante

In recent years, Ibiza has become a bit of a foodie destination. Many of the island’s clubbing masterminds also have gourmet restaurants, so if you’re splashing out, here’s where you can eat in style.

Lío

Lío is a VIP favourite overlooking Ibiza Town’s harbour. The serving staff are seasoned performers, but with the rich and famous often docking their superyachts in the marina below, sometimes these special guests will be invited to treat diners to a show.

Heart

Heart is one of Ibiza’s most exclusive dining spots. Book a table and you can expect deliciously gourmet food alongside stunningly acrobatic live shows. Even if you can’t get a reservation for dinner, it’s still worth heading down for the beautifully designed night club.

KM5

Ever since it opened in 1994, KM5 has been one of the most chic dining spots on the island. Combining Japanese and Peruvian influences, KM5’s restaurant is renowned for its grilled meat and seafood dishes. On-site you’ll also find a sushi bar and fashion boutique, and its lounge garden is a great place to unwind.

Cova Santa

You’ll find Cova Santa in a natural cave in Ibiza’s countryside, so it’s safe to say the restaurant’s views are almost as good as its food. Dinner is often accompanied by traditional flamenco dancing shows, and occasionally the island’s resident DJs will host clubbing events and after-parties.

Aiyanna and Amante

Aiyanna

Sister restaurants Aiyanna and Amante are both found in beachfront locations on the east coast. During the day you can chill out with a yoga session and lunch at Aiyanna in Cala Nova. During the evening, Amante’s clifftop location above Cala Sol d’en Serra is difficult to beat. It specialises in modern Italian and Spanish flavours, and is also a regular venue for Cinema Paradiso screenings.
