Happy 29th birthday to Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan!
Born on 28 June 1994, Hussein bin Abdullah is Crown Prince of Jordan and the eldest son of King Abdullah II and Queen Rania. Hussein is the namesake of his grandfather, King Hussein.
Hussein obtained a bachelor's degree in International History at Georgetown University in 2016, and graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 2017. He is a captain in the Jordanian Armed Forces. Since reaching the age of majority in 2012, Hussein served as a regent on several occasions and has accompanied his father on a number of local and international visits. In 2015, at the age of 20, Hussein became the youngest person to chair a UN Security Council session.
Hussein didn’t become the crown prince until 2009, when a royal decree was issued. Before then, his half-uncle, Prince Hamzah, was the named heir.
He is in charge of the Crown Prince Foundation, which is responsible for a technical university, and a number of scientific and humanitarian initiatives.
On 17 August 2022, the Royal Hashemite Court announced the engagement of Crown Prince Hussein to Rajwa Al Saif. The couple married on 1 June 2023 at Zahran Palace.

“I wonder if the other sons (Faisal, Hashim and Ali) of King Hussein think the same as King Abdullah or Hamzah, or even if their sons (Omar and Abdullah bin Ali) are jealous of the Crown Prince. I would like to know what ideas they have or do they just stay quiet and work without feeling envy or resentment towards their brother the King.” - Submitted by Anonymous

Two Jordanians Sentenced to Prison in Plot Against Monarchy

Jordan says Prince Hamzah's circle aimed to destabilize security | DW | 04.04.2021
Tumblr media
Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi said on Sunday that former Crown Prince Hamzah bin Hussein and his aides were in contact with “foreign parties” about the “right timing to destabilize” Jordanian security.
Security forces arrested several officials on Saturday. Hamzah said he was placed under house arrest as he criticized the government.
Safadi said Hamzah had engaged in “recent activities and movements” that aimed to incite people against the state.
King Abdullah II will discuss the situation with Hamzah, his half-brother, directly and within the royal family, Safadi said in a press conference.
The deputy prime minister said ongoing investigations began a long time ago, and that the Jordanian government has foiled all moves to undermine security. He did not identify the “foreign parties” allegedly involved in the plot.
What was the reaction in Jordan?
Queen Noor, the mother of former Crown Prince Hamzah, denounced on Sunday a “wicked slander” in her first response to the revelations after circulated footage showed her son criticizing the government.
“Praying that truth and justice will prevail for all the innocent victims of this wicked slander. God bless and keep them safe,” she said on Twitter.
Jordan’s army chief said on Saturday that Hamzah was not under arrest, but had been asked to stop “some activities that could be used to shake the stability and security of Jordan.” But the prince has disputed this in a video message.
Deputy Prime Minister Tawfiq Krishan said on Sunday that the Jordanian government never “eliminated the opposition or excluded a political movement.”
His comment came during a meeting of top officials as they mark the 100th anniversary of the Jordanian state.
The official Al-Rai newspaper warned on Sunday that Jordan’s “security and stability” were a “red line that must not be crossed or even approached.”
Who was arrested?
The deputy prime minister said authorities arrested between 14 to 16 people, as well as two main top officials.
Among those detained was Bassem Awadallah, a former finance and planning minister and a longtime confidant of the king. He was also an adviser to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Awadallah, a proponent of economic reforms, resigned as chief of the royal court in 2008 amid allegations of interference in sensitive political and economic issues.
Safadi said Awadallah was in contact with the so-called “foreign opposition,” which aimed to incite the people against the Jordanian state.
Security forces also arrested the top official and member of the royal family Sharif Hassan Ben Zaid.
He was the king’s envoy to Saudi Arabia, where he also had investments, according to local media reports.
What about Hamzah?
Hamzah said he was not allowed to leave his home or meet with other people, according to a video provided by his lawyer to the BBC.
“I recorded this video to make it clear that what has been said officially is not a reflection of what is actually happening on the ground,” he said in a video statement.

The king stripped Hamzah of his title as crown prince in 2004 and gave it to his son
Hamzah slammed the Jordanian government over what he said was a responsibility for the country’s deteriorating human rights situation.
Labib Kamhawi, a Jordanian analyst, told the Associated Press that Hamzah likely crossed a line for the royal family by indicating he might be an alternative to the long-ruling king.
“This is something the king does not accept or tolerate,” he told the AP. “This is why we are now witnessing what has happened. This file is now more or less closed.”
Which countries backed the king?
Neighboring countries and allies of Jordan expressed their support for King Abdullah on Sunday.
The United States, the United Kingdom and Gulf allies rallied behind the king, highlighting Jordan’s strategic importance in the region.
Saudi Arabia was among the first to voice support for the king. The United Arab Emirates, Oman, Morocco, Lebanon, Egypt, Kuwait, Iraq, Turkey, Qatar, Iran, Yemen, Israel, Palestinian territories, Romania and Ukraine also issued statements in solidarity with Jordan’s security.
What is the situation in Jordan?
Although the developments in Jordan have come as a surprise for many, DW reporter Aya Ibrahim says there were indications a closer look at the developments on the ground show what led to this point.
“The country has really suffered under the COVID-19 pandemic economically. It has also had to undergo some very serious austerity measures that are starting to be really painful for ordinary Jordanians,” she told DW News.
Ibrahim noted that former Prince Hamzah’s criticism of corruption and the country’s ruling elite “does resonate with some of the king’s critics domestically.”
“He did say that he met with some of the tribal leaders, so one can then understand why the official view that this was a destabilizing move on his part,” she said.
Amman-based journalist Rana Sweis told DW that Prince Hamzah’s video appeal was “unprecedented.”
“Jordan is normally a stable Arab kingdom that has been a staunch ally of countries in Europe and the US, particularly when it comes to counterterrorism cooperation in the Middle East,” Sweis said.
“It is really a rare kind of tension that we have not really seen before at the forefront,” she added.
Jordan has long been a key Western ally and an island of stability in a turbulent region. It borders Israel, the Palestinian territories, Syria and Iraq.

Prince Hamzah bin Hussein, the 41-year-old half-brother of King Abdullah II and crown prince until 2004, has been detained at home, sources in Amman said, though the government has denied he has been arrested.
"We asked him to stop activities and movements that are used against Jordan's stability," the Jordanian army said in a statement.
The army added that Hassan bin Zaid, a member of the royal family, and Bassem Awadallah, who was director of King Abdullah's office in 2006, have been arrested following "comprehensive investigations undertaken by security agencies"....
A senior Middle East intelligence official briefed on the events told the Washington Post that investigations were ongoing into an attempt to unseat the king. The Post reported that tribal leaders and members of the Jordanian security establishment are said to have been involved in the plot.
"At least 20 more people involved with Prince Hamzah have been arrested at the same time," a Jordanian source told MEE.
"It could be a failed coup attempt, but nobody knows the exact details."
Major General Yousef Huneiti, chairman of Jordanian armed forces, said: "The investigations are continuing. We will announce the results when we finish. All procedures were taken according to law. All people are under the law. Jordan's safety and stability is the priority."
Yaser al-Majali, director of Hamzah's office, and Adnan Abu Hammad, who manages the prince's palace, are among the detainees.
Hassan bin Zaid was formerly King Abdullah's special envoy to Saudi Arabia. Some local websites in Jordan say he holds Saudi citizenship.
Following his work in the king's office and a stint as finance minister, Awadallah established new businesses in UAE and Saudi Arabia. Some sources say he works as a consultant for Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
saudi fingerprints all over this coup, probably uae and israeli backing too given how close they are. likely the biden admin alerted the jordanians.

“King Abdullah is the eldest son of King Hussein bin Talal, so Abdullah succeeded to the throne by law. King Abdullah is absolutely worthy. King Abdullah have worked hard to improve Jordan's position in the world and to offer the international community a positive outlook on Jordan. The Jordanian people should not forget this, they should be realistic and remember how much King Abdullah changed the world community's view of Jordan and made Jordan a great, successful and peaceful country.” - Submitted by Anonymous
“King Abdullah do not deserves to be overthrown in this way. The rf the sole reason for stability in their country. Allowing millions of refugees into their country without having enough resources for themselves needs a lot of generosity. Yes prince Hamzah is also popular and kind but monarchies works this way. The eldest son/child is meant to be the next ruler. People must stop thanking attackers for planning a coup against him and rather wish for their country's safety and sability.” - Submitted by Anonymous
