A creative life

Yesterday I was thinking about my job, about all we are doing for lockdown to reach people with creativity and compassion, to reach people who are alone, to offer something different to the same four walls we are all so stuck with right now. I feel so fortunate, so in the right place with my work right now, despite being part freelance with precarious work. I was thinking about my mum and how she was an artist and though I had a brief 6 years with her, how influential she was to me. People who knew her well said she would inspire others to create and feel confident and enjoy making art. When we finally got a stable home together, she sacrificed her bedroom so she could have a studio and slept in a futon in the living room instead (invariably with me sneaking from my own bedroom into her bed each night.

She took me to the cinema to see amazing films, one about a firebird that I’ve never been able to find in adulthood. She also took me to see Amadeus when I was 4 years old, a bizarre choice perhaps and I certainly remember the shock of the early scenes in the asylum. Yet that film remains one of my absolute favourites and Mozart one of my favourite composers whose music can completely change my mood and has lifted me through depression, expressed my despair and accompanied the writing of my doctoral thesis. She took me to dance class where we pretended to be fizzy cola bottles and I remember feeling happy and joyous in my four-year-old body, bouncing around a community hall with unbridled abandon.

So after she died, it is no wonder that it was to creativity that I turned. That the first time I shared the depths of the pain I’d felt at losing her was under a spotlight at my youth theatre, a free after school one for all of us who couldn’t afford the local classes. For the gift she had imparted on me in those 6 short years was that the arts had space for all of it, for all the grief and for all the joy. And that is what my life’s work has been. Making spaces for others to be creative, letting theatre and art hold all of that mess that is life and death. What a privilege, what a gift.
