Another Early Effort
Here’s another sequence from my early days of photographing trains: this is a southbound manifest on the Illinois Central through my hometown of Bloomington, Indiana.
The IC had merged with the Gulf Mobile & Ohio just three years earlier (and did not paint over locomotives quickly in any case) and so we have two of those units here—along with a black IC geep. The locos in order then, all EMD: GP30, GP38, GP9.
The first two shots were made at the yard office while the latter two from the Rogers Street timber bridge just to the west (railroad south). The final pictures shows an Illinois Central track-side structure there for motor cars.
Four images by Richard Koenig; taken in August of 1975.

What's your favorite train
Your simple question has multiple answers so I'll give you those.
First, in terms of North American Steam locomotives, I probably like the PRR T-1 and NYC Dreyfuss Hudson about the same. For Diesel, the GP30 is just delightful. For Electric, the GG1 is unparalleled.
In terms of global, I particularly like Japanese steam. It looks like what British steam should have looked like. The JGR class 8620 is particularly nice.
An extra shout out to some particular locomotives, the SBB class E 3/3 is lovely. Choshi's DeKi 3 is adorable, and the USRA Mikado and its clones are very handsome.

top 5 locomotives!
I'm so glad this is my brand. Someone already asked this but like. Here's five more I love.
1) the GE standard cab dash 8s, all of em. Especially the SP and SSW B40-8s. Love a standard cab with bigfuck radiators
2) EMD GP30s. Really really neat despite being too little too late for EMD. Lucky they got the GP35 out in time.
3) any weird chop hood GP, there are a ton of funked up GP7s and 9s out there with road-specific modifications.
4) Norfolk & Western and Southern's high hood GE dash 7s. Look up delay in block, they've got some cool videos of em. Very neat engines despite being totally impractical.
5) The GE P42DC. This is a pretty sorta standard fare locomotive, it's Amtrak's primary diesel locomotive. But god it's neat. I've talked to an Amtrak engineer who drove em on the Empire Builder for 10 years and he said it's the most fun he's ever had with his pants on. Incredibly powerful locos that reeeeally want you to push that throttle wide open n let em go. Also they looked great in their modified phase III scheme (the solid one not the weird fade one, clarifying bc I know chessie will see this <3)

30 Years Was Worth The Wait.... by Darryl Rule Via Flickr: When I was a kid, my dad was always at the Blue Mountain & Reading. He got pretty close with Andy, Shane, Charlie, Bob, Thurman and Richie, and I have TONS of memories of being in the cab or 2102, 425, the E8s and the GP30. However, as a 9 or 10 year old kid, the photos I took back then were....not good. So I had to wait 30 years to get some photos of 2102, but it was SO worth the wait. This was the first location I saw the 2102 after her recent restoration, and needless to say my childhood memories cam flooding back as I watched the train approach. Even better, I got to share it with my 9 year old son Wesley. Thanks to Andy and the entire RBMN steam crew for making these images possible.

Shiller Park
On my way back to Indiana, from Milwaukee, I grabbed a couple of shots of Soo Line power in the Chicago area. I was told by some on FB that this place is called Shiller Park.
As for the locomotives on hand—we see a big U30C 803 (with aerodynamic fins, which I dig), built in 1968, and GP30 717 (sporting Alco trucks, not really visible here), built in 1963. Both of these units were constructed for the Soo Line, delivered with these numbers. There was an F-unit and a GP9 loitering about as well.
Two images by Richard Koenig; taken February 27th 1977.

Action at Schiller Park
flickr
Action at Schiller Park por Matthew Smith Por Flickr: In this Kodachrome slide, it's March 13th, 1966 and Soo Line F7A 2224-A, leads GP35 731 and GP30 717 as they move down the lead at the south end of Schiller Park Yard, in Schiller Park, IL. To get a general idea of where the photo was taken, the yard track with the caboose would be 3 track, with 2 & 1 behind the small building. To the left of the power the ATSF boxcar sits on 7 track. Schiller Park in the northwestern suburbs was the southern terminus of the Soo Line in Chicagoland. The yard was originally part of the Wisconsin Central, that was ultimately leased by the Soo Line. While my love of the Soo Line centers around the lines through the Upper Peninsula of Michigan between Gladstone and Sault Ste. Marie, in a ironic twist of fate, I never imagined that while working for CSX I would ever find myself working into a former Soo Line yard. But starting in May of 2017 I started doing just that as CSX moved the crew change for the pair of CP Haulage right intermodal trains from Willard, OH, and Garrett, IN. to the "new" yard at North Baltimore, OH. In a even bigger twist todays CP trains 132/133 (I166/I165 on CSX) from Schiller Park, IL to Montreal, QC is the same pair of intermodal trains that CP/SOO started running between the same two points in the 1970's as trains 912/911 via Sault Ste. Marie, that will be the mainstay of my model railroad. Matthew Smith Collection. Origonal photographer unknown.
