In the advent of Unity's new bullshit, I remind you:
MOST COLLEGE VIDEO GAME DESIGN CLASSES TEACH UNITY AND UNITY *ONLY.*
A GREAT DEAL OF THE GAMES YOU AND I PLAY EVERY SINGLE DAY ARE UNITY GAMES.
THE VIDEO GAME INDUSTRY *IS NOT UNIONIZED* AND THEREFORE DEVS HAVE VERY LITTLE ABILITY TO FIGHT THIS.
If you see your favorite games vanish suddenly, it's NOT bc the devs don't want you to play them. It's because Unity is a dick.
If I see you get mad at the indie devs that are being forced to either delete their work forever or cough up money they don't have, I'm biting you and your arm is coming with me.

We have been Betrayed, Backstabbed, Bamboozled: The Future of Elysian Eclipse
So, if you are active on our Discord, you know that EE is made in the Unity Engine and the CEO just decided to massively fuck over all the devs who are using it...
Callum Upton made a great video explaining the situation:
youtube
But it gets even worse!
Unity since defended themselves, saying that these fees are only affecting 10% of their customers, because of the $200k and $1m thresholds, so Indie devs don't have to worry about that.
…which isn't true:
Unity Plus
They aren't only introducing these fees but also changed the regular pricing plans! They just removed "Unity Plus" which is the lowest tier and costs about $50/month per dev with taxes. This is what most indies use. The next higher tier costs QUADROUPLE that amount and is also required to remove the universally loathed "made with Unity" splash screen. Oh! And if you have the personal tier, you won't be able to use Unity offline anymore! It now needs to do a license check every 3 days to function!
Unity's Ad Service
The fees will hit devs that do free-to-play mobile stuff especially hard, since they still have to pay the fees even when the players don't buy anything, meaning they could end up owing Unity more than they make in income. But what's this? If you use Unity's advertising service for your game, you will get a discount on the fees! The majority of mobile games run on Unity, meaning they are trying to monopolize the mobile ad market with this!
Publishers
Elysian Eclipse has caught the interest of a really big studio and publisher, who is considering to handle the marketing and publishing for the game. They are obviously planning to make the game come out big with sales, going beyond Unity's thresholds. But since the game is made in Unity, they probably now have to reconsider that carefully, since that would cause a massive amount of fees with Unity's new pricing model. So any game using Unity is now an instant turn-off for publishers, also massively hurting indie devs who don't reach that income threshold yet.
Tumblr media
What will happen now?
So, Unity can't be trusted anymore and should be seen as a major threat to us and the gaming industry. Even if they walk back on some of these decisions, what has been said, has been said. They showed that they don't care about destroying thousands of games, as long as it nets them profit, so who knows what they are going to do next?
I will pause the development of Elysian Eclipse and release the Patreon demo, including all the prototypes like Aquatic Stage for free today. I canceled my subscription and it will run out next year, so Unity isn't getting a single cent from my games anymore.
Unreal Eclipse?
In the meantime I'll focus on improving my C++ skills, so I can work more effectively in Unreal Engine 5. Unreal is the current industry leader, offering much better solutions for graphics and performance for 3D games. It is also partially open source and completely free until you reach $1 million in revenue.
It is unlikely that I will be able to just translate the game from C# to C++ and port it over, since it is using a lot of engine-specific features. This basically means, we will start from scratch... I can't tell yet how much work this will be or in what ways the game will change.
But one thing, you can always be certain of: I will NEVER BETRAY MY DREAM. I will finish this project, no matter who or what stands in my way. I hope you will continue to support me on this journey.
That being said,
FUCK JOHN RICCITIELLO!!
Fucking cunt.

I feel like I'm watching the library of Alexandria burning, millions of game will be lost and possibly never seen again. So much human creativity and work gone in an instant. It will just be gone because of greed, all of the Indi devs who spend hours making their dreams become real will lose it all, thousands of hours of work, millions of ideas, just gone, with all that's left is YouTube let's plays. I really hope that this won't come to fruition and that Unity will back down because if they don't, the library will truly be nothing but ashes

Honestly, fuck Unity. They’re done for, no matter how much they backtrack their reputation is going to be permanently stained, and completely deserved too. This might not be a problem for, oh I don’t know, AAA’s, but this is going to kill the indie game scene, and already devs are planning on removing games. Cult of the Lamb im pretty sure, and I’ve heard about Rain World considering too, and I don’t even know what’s going to happen to silksong. There’s more too, this is just the big ones being talked about mainly. Go and rant somewhere online, even if you don’t care about video games or the internet at all. The more people talking the better.
slight edit:
Basically any indie game you can think of is fucked. Bloons, Ultrakill, big chance whatever game your thinking of was made in Unity. On top of this, Unity is also fucked. So much big companies make stuff in Unity they are bound to get a lawsuit by one of them. Anyways, thanks to the Unity idiots for ruining basically all of my favorite games. I sure do appreciate it.

please tell me there's somthing we can do about unity. Do we e-mail game comapnies to get them to file lawsuits? do we protest? what can we do? The last thing I want is for a bunch of games to become lost media because of a companies greed. I don't want to just lie down and brace for the worst on Jan 1st.

i don't know exactly how to proceed with this project. I will never use unity again after their ridiculous betrayal, despite their backpedaling. I'll only ever use open source development software going forward. this means I'll need to remake what I've already made in some other engine. It's not like I had a minimum viable product anyway, so I can take this opportunity to improve everything from scratch. still, it's a daunting task to think about. Syndical Crossing may just live in BTS for now.

Unity "apologizes" and plans to change their policy, but it doesn't mean they're gonna revert the shit policy they introduced. I wish their platform the worst until they stop doing the cringe ah move theyre doing right now. If you don't know - unity will start charging game developers not only per game purchase (which is normal) but also per install and per hour spent in game - basically developer will have to pay extra money to unity, if you AFK ingame and reinstall the game over and over again. Let it be an example for other companies to not fuck with the consumers.
