The Route of Bitterness
Sermon Recap: 4give 4life #5
A bitter heart is rooted in three things; pride, fear of man, and unbelief. When we allow someone else to take the place of God in our lives we place our expectations of God onto that person. We allow them to be God in our lives and determine our value and self-worth. Who is God in your life?
This was the fifth, and final week in our fantastic 4give 4life series. Pastor Ric really takes us to church with this sermon! This is a one to earmark and come back to periodically as you evaluate yourself and grow in your relationships, and in Christ. We get into where bitterness comes from, how to catch yourself when you fall into bitterness, and how to become free from the grasp of bitterness.
Focus Verse, Ephesians 4:31,32
Over the past weeks, we have learned that God is more interested in our hearts than our actions. He is always ready to forgive, and restore fellowship when we come to Him with our hearts in the right place no matter what sins we have committed.
When it comes to dealing with bitterness it’s no different. Bitterness is a heart issue. It comes from feelings, and emotions that are rooted in pride, fear of how others view us, and unbelief in God’s control over our situation. Bitter people allow someone else (maybe even themselves) to consume their lives in at least one of these areas to the point where that person becomes a God in their lives. It could be your terrible boss, your adulterous ex-spouse, even a child, or a close friend.
A bitter person is not putting God first, they allow the person who did them wrong to be number one and to determine their self-worth, rather than lean into what God believes about them. Bitterness towards one will always spill into other relationships. Forgetting whose opinion of you really matters causes a bitter person to almost always fall into immorality, due to their feeling of rejection.
The Route to Freedom from Bitterness
Remember your value and worth are based on what God says about you, not other people
Admit when you are feeling bitter, own it.
Confess your sin of idolatry because of pride, fear of man, and unbelief
Place God back on the throne of your heart. Let God be the only God in your life.
Be Kind, be slow to judge others without the knowledge of their heart’s intent.
Be Compassionate, respond to others with a caring and sympathetic heart.
Be Forgiving, Be quick to release the debt someone owes you and give that debt to God to handle in any way He wants to.
Do you have someone in your life that you have allowed to consume your heart and dictate how you feel about yourself? The route to freedom lays in the gentle, loving hands of our Lord. Let go, and Let God....Today!
