Review: FredHeads: The Documentary (2022)
FredHeads: The Documentary (2022)

Score: 3 out of 5

FredHeads: The Documentary is precisely that: a documentary about the Nightmare on Elm Street movies, and more specifically their fans, and how they credit the series with changing their lives. It is an extremely scattershot documentary that, in my honest opinion, ran about thirty minutes too long, as though its directors Paige Troxell and Kim Gunzinger wanted to cram as many of the fan-submitted videos they solicited into the movie as possible even if it meant a runtime of over two hours. The result is a movie that very much feels like it was made for fans, by fans, for better and for worse. While watching so many people discussing their love of the series was interesting as somebody who also loves the Nightmare series, eventually it just started to feel like the movie was rambling, like a group of friends shooting the shit at one guy's place where you're having fun but eventually you wanna do something different. There were some segments that I would've easily kept, like the guy who does a highly detailed Freddy Krueger cosplay for conventions, or the father who said that he'd rather show his young daughter horror movies where the final girl triumphs over the villain through her own grit and gumption versus Disney movies where Prince Charming does the hard work of saving her. Others, however, got repetitive, and there was one particularly weird one featuring a young lady who was frankly obsessed with Nancy Thompson in ways that gave me Annie Wilkes vibes.
It's when the film is narrowing its focus to Troxell and Gunzinger themselves, as well as their friends Anthony Brownlee, Jeremy Todd Moorehead, and Diandra Lazor, as they sit down for just that -- a roundtable discussion of the series and what it means to them -- that the film actually starts to pick up, especially towards the back half where they became the main focus. They all have interesting, and sometimes dark, stories to tell about the movies, whether they were sneaking off to watch violent horror movies that their mothers desperately tried to keep them away from (but their fathers weren't so concerned!), using the movies as an escape from bullying, or deciding not to go through with a suicide attempt because that's not what her hero, the all-time GOAT final girl Nancy Thompson, would have done. It's these stories that stuck with me, stories about how horror fandom, despite being built around movies that haven't gotten much respect until very recently, can have an uplifting effect on people going through rough spots in their lives. The movie that had that impact on me wasn't Nightmare but Carrie, the one piece of media that convinced me to cave and buy a damn Funko Pop! figurine (hey, when you're being mercilessly bullied in middle school, it's hard not to connect with a girl who uses freaky mind powers to get revenge on her bullies), but I still saw a lot of myself in the people profiled in this movie. When it got rolling towards the end, I was reminded why I love horror movies and why I'm proud to do so.
The Bottom Line
If you're not much of a horror fan already, there's probably not a lot in this movie that will hold your attention. That said, if you are, then there's a lot here that you'll enjoy. It's not really about Nightmare so much as it is about horror fandom in general, and there's a lot of material that I think would've been better saved for special features on the DVD, but overall, this film, while unwieldy, has its charms.

🧲 Which slashers are you currently obsessed with?
Tumblr media
If you have talked to me once, you will know my favorite slasher of ALL TIME would be Freddy Krueger.
The NOES series has impacted me since childhood. It was the one movie I remember and always actually scared me. We had the New Nightmare on DVD and even seeing it made me scared as a kid and always nervous to look in my dad’s DVD collection because I knew I’d see it. A particular scene/the scenery from I believe the 3rd or 4th movie always stuck with me and made me afraid.
But as I grew older and revisiting the series and nostalgia I immediately fell in love and became the biggest Fredhead ever. I own all the movies, I have the TV series on DVD and also have a DVD copy of the almost 4 hour documentary on the series that I’ve watched so many times I can quote it word for word AS WELL as an audio file of the original 1-800 freddy krueger hotline (thank you Echo)
Freddy Krueger was always an interesting character and I feel really shows how a series changes and just like. How context changes through the public and series.
Freddy used to be a scary evil villain, but by the 4th movie, as my dad told me, the audience cheered when Freddy came back to life.
He’s absolutely hilarious and became a fun, wise cracking killer who a lot of people adore and became a cult classic. There was so much merchandise and demand for these movies man. Even KIDS PAJAMAS, which in context of the original film is kinda fucked! KSJDF
Robert Englund absolutely SELLS the character and how he LOVED being Freddy and how easy he stretched his acting abilities when changing the character from serious and dark to fun and light hearted to back to dark in New Nightmare.
He took a lot of conscious choices and absolutely SOLD IT. He LOVED doing his thing and was always so THRILLED to be under that makeup and just have fun with it.
He’s ICONIC and the fact the Reboot, which if you know me I hate with such a passion I go on hour long rants about how much I hate it so, just kinda took this character and made him. What he is.
God I hate that movie.
Anyway.
Freddy is legit my ultimate favorite slasher and is like!! A big comfort thing I guess. He’s so nostalgic and just makes me happy to watch on screen! He’s a fun killer, his kills are creative and his one-liners always earn a smile if not a laugh, and the fact the actors and crew tend to usually have so much fun on set both on the camera and making the SFX shit for the kills just makes it all the more heartwarming !!
💯 Which slasher would you prefer to be killed by?
Tumblr media
TBH? Billy Loomis.
Simply because I know he’d make my death very sexy. Very iconic. Gimmie that sweet classic 90s blow out baby. Gimmie that sexual tension. Those Classic Final Girl Moments. Make my death COUNT BABY!!!

Insidious The Last Key - Episode 249 - Horror News Radio
The insidious Insidious franchise returns with The Last Key, the fourth installment in the series that James Wan started back in 2010. Now, Adam Robitel (The Taking of Deborah Logan) takes the reigns as Elise (Lin Shaye) revisits her childhood home and the ghosts of her past. Both literally AND figuratively. Horror News Radio takes on the first theatrical horror film of January. More of the same dumping ground or does this one surprise? Listen to find out as The Grue Crew are joined by Joey Fittos. After that, they take a look at The Houses October Built 2, where we see plenty of diverse haunts and eventually get to something of a plot. Dave Dreher starts things off with Horror News of the Week, featuring congrats to Guillermo del Toro for his Golden Globe win, hilarity over the upcoming unintentional comedy of 2018 Truth or Dare and another George R.R. Martin adaptation that'll hopefully be as gory as Game of Thrones. Plus, a contest winner is announced!
As always, the HNR Grue-Crew would love to hear from you, the listeners, the fans. You can always reach out via email at feedback(AT)horrornewsradio(DOT)com or find us on Twitter: Doc Rotten | Dave Dreher | Thomas Mariani. Also, like us on Facebook and join the Horror News Radio Facebook Group.

FredHeads explores the fandom and legacy of the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise. I’m excited to be serving as executive producer and publicist on the forthcoming documentary. Check out the poster by Mad Matt Design above and the teaser trailer below.
Director Paige Troxell and her crew from Venn Pictures and Northgate Pictures have been traveling the country to speak with passionate fanatics, lifelong aficionados, cosplayers, creators, artists, filmmakers, kids, and other enthusiasts to analyze how being a fan can change your life.
The film also features insight from the stars and creatives of the Elm Street franchise, including Lisa Wilcox, Robert Kurtzman, Tuesday Night, Miko Hughes, Danny Hassel, Andras Jones, Toy Newkirk, Kelly Jo Minter, Ricky Dean Logan, and Mick Strawn, among others.
An Indiegogo campaign has been launched in order to complete production. You can purchase FredHeads DVDs, shirts, pins, posters, soundtracks, sunglasses, and more.
