FRANCIS DI FRONZO + KRISTINE POOLE: Parallels

Parallels opens this Friday featuring the work of Francis Di Fronzo and Kristine Poole. The parallels are complex and revealed on multiple levels. Both artists present the opportunity to explore the stories hidden beneath the surface of their subjects.

Francis Di Fronzo's pensive, often ominous paintings are rife with both unseen and deeply felt forces: seemingly paradoxical impulses that are integral to his work. In this exhibition, there are vestiges of the pursuit of dreams such as in The Mystery. Part 2 and The Mystery, Part 3. The rusted remains are monuments to dreams realized or forgotten. The stories are embedded in these deteriorating icons of the American Dream. Di Fronzo transforms the ephemera of American landscapes into visions of unwavering intensity, convincing us that even the most unassuming territory is never as straightforward as it initially appears. Eschewing nostalgia and ornamentation, Di Fronzo makes deceptively, marvelously complex work that allows us to see more and further than we thought we could.

Poole’s work explores themes centered on socio-cultural experience, her sensitive sculptural approach to the figure allowing the inner emotional landscape to be revealed through the external forms of the body. Contrasting classically rendered figures with contemporary motifs and surface treatments, she frequently juxtaposes body language, posture and attitude with text, layering the strength of gesture with the power words have convey, create and define reality and experience. Reflecting on the work in this exhibition, Kristine says “Certainly in both of our work, there is a strong element of storytelling - Francis invites the view to enter something of the aftermath of the events and perhaps to conjure up their own tale. I tend to literally and figuratively show the person in the center of the story in the present.”
