Tell me about the Allison; Why did it lack the Turbo-Supercharger?
Superchargers and turbochargers (formally known as turbosuperchargers, as they’re a supercharger driven by exhaust gasses instead of directly off the engine’s driveshaft) are fucking expensive to make, as they consist of densely-packed high speed gears. 
Supercharged six-cylinder engines have made a big splash in the auto market in recent years; not just delivering great fuel efficiency, but also power - Ford kept building 8-cylinder F-150s, worried that not everyone would be convinced a measly 6-cylinder could do the job in a big pickup, and they found themselves unable to sell them because their supercharged “Eco-boost” engine was more than good enough to sell itself. The fact that the auto industry only recently embraced these benefits wholesale, when superchargers have been around since the 30s, is a testament to just how costly and complex they are to make. Only recently has manufacturing techniques advanced enough to make them cost-efficient to routinely install in production consumer vehicles. 
Superchargers/turbochargers are complex arrangements of step-up gears that drive air compression fan(s) at high speeds. Gears require very precise machining, especially at the speeds superchargers run at, and that also requires them to be very strong and durable - and aircraft applications also prefer if they’re light, too. This also imposes a pretty strict quality-control standard, as the stresses on the components are high, and a single failure will rip the whole thing apart, with probable dire consequences for the entire aircraft and pilot. This is still a problem for combat aircraft, as the problems any number of fighters have had with their compression fan’s blades can show you (the F-14 being a particularly infamous example.) 
The Allison V-1710 was perfectly capable of accepting a supercharger; the P-38 used turbo-supercharging for its Allison's and really demonstrated what those powerplants were capable of. The Allison being supplanted by the Merlin for the P-51 due to a lack of supercharging is well-known, but all this means in practice is that the Brits had already worked out the mechanics of cramming a supecharger onto a Merlin, and the Allison had not. The great difficulties the P-47′s engineers had in getting the turbocharger on that aircraft to work neatly demonstrate that getting that engineering worked out is no trivial matter. This is the same attitude responsible for the Spit 16 was tooling around with a much-improved Griffon engine when P-51Ds were still rolling off the production line with Merlins - the Americans correctly decided that it was far better to keep pumping out license-built Packard Merlins than bring the line to a halt to re-tool; as one fighter with 20% increased performance wasn’t as good as three fighters at 100% performance. (Since the Brits hadn’t a fraction of that production capability, their move to the Griffin was wise; it allowed their aircraft to handle missions with especially demanding requirements and let American production - much of which they bought, including Mustangs - handle the need for sufficient numbers. Its often forgotten among people comparing e-peens on WarThunder’s forums that these decisions were made in the context of the alliance, not just the individual country.) Likewise, the reason the US never fully embraced the Hispano-Suiza 20mm (despite a desire to do so) was because they needed to mass-produce the design, and the Hispano was still pretty reliant on armorers doing a final hand-fit on those weapons, which worked for the UK, but simply couldn’t meet the demand of America’s vast industrial war machine. 
Even putting integration and engineering challenges aside, the inherent cost and complexity of superchargers created inevitable production bottlenecks, requiring prioritization of which aircraft received them. This is the main reason the F6F never received a turbocharger (in addition to prototype attempts indicating it’d be a non-trivial matter to make them reliable and effective,) and the F-4U was supercharged - differing requirements and roles meant the F-4U needed it more. 
This is hard for us to grasp these days, as the age of industrial war has fallen further and further behind us. Now, a qualitative superiority in performance is so dominant that one good fighter can destroy mediocre opponents at will, said opponents unable to even reasonably threaten, much less harm it. The depths to which one can invest in technological edges are much greater, as are the rewards, which is why a single cruise missile today costs more than an entire air superiority fighter plane did in 1945. Yes, inflation-adjusted dollars - the P-51′s unit cost in 1945 was $50,985, which the CPI’s inflation calculator pegs as worth $720,630 today. Cruise missiles run around a million, even, and a single AIM-120D AMRAAM puts you back a staggering $1.8 million. 
With modern dynamics like this, it’s harder for us to understand a war like WWII and the wisdom of the production trade-offs made. Suffice to say a lot of theaters saw predominantly low-altitude combat, such as the Russian and North African fronts, and for a great many roles and airframes, superchargers weren’t a justifiable expense.
