Azalin Reviews: Darklord Eli van Hassan

Domain: The Endless Road Domain Formation: 690 BC Power Level: 💀⚫⚫⚫⚫ Source: Dungeon Magazine #174 (4e) In 4e the Headless Horseman became the victim of Eli van Hassen who in turn became the Darklord of the Endless Road, a more developed version of the Winding Road.

Eli was your classic big fish in a little pond type who wanted to be a large whale in the ocean. Though, he wasn’t much more than a minnow in a puddle. He had no titles, no legacy and the only reason he lorded over the hamlet of Tranquility was because he happened to have the most wealth and property in the area. That isn’t saying much, considering his “rule” was over a handful of people with next to nothing to their name.

Eli spent many days looking down on “his” people in disdain, believing he was meant for more. He hated those that courted Talitha, his only daughter. He saw them as attempting to take the one person he cared for away from him.

Tranquility came under the siege of a hydra and the small village could not handle it on their own, so Eli sent people out to find help. Help came in the form of “the Horseman” and his soldiers whom, after weeks of battle, slayed the beast.

Talitha became quite smitten with the Horseman and he returned her feelings. Eli, however, looked upon the couple with rage. This so-called hero did not deserve his daughter’s affections and so, being a very obedient child, Eli convinced Talitha to bring forth false accusations against the Horseman. Talitha’s love for the Horseman must not have been too great for her to go along with this plan. Regardless, she followed through with her father's plan and convinced the villagers that the Horseman had assaulted her. Akin to modern day research into political issues on social media, her accusations resulted in mod mentality and the villagers descended upon the Horseman and chopped of his head without considering a formal trial.

That night the Mist surrounded Eli’s estate and took him, Talitha, and a number of their servants into Ravenloft, making Eli the Darklord of the Endless Road. Eli’s estate changed. Buildings stood in different locations or were gone completely, his garden was wilted, and the property’s fence that was once wooden was now made of wrought iron. And most noticeable of all, Tranquility was gone.

If Eli leaves his estate to explore the Endless Road, he loses all the powers so kindly gifted to him by our Tormentors and is hunted by the Headless Horseman. The Endless Road expands ever on. It is similar to the Winding Road in that it can appear almost anywhere. The main difference is there are actual towns and sites associated with the Endless Road and not all who find themselves upon it are beheaded by the Horseman, instead many become lost upon the road and seek shelter among what few settlements there are upon it. These people are called “The Lost”.

The Endless Road contains the open grave of the Headless Horseman, where he is said to rise from once more if he is defeated. He is much the same as he was before (though now with an actual history that makes him a victim), a man seeking vengeance upon the road while an entourage of heads from his past victims follow in his wake.

Eli is one of the most pathetic Darklords. He cannot leave his estate because the Horseman is far more powerful than he. This is his so-called torment - to rule a single estate instead of a grand empire as he once dreamed. Talitha is there with him, but she is a mere shadow of what she once was.

Eli’s “powers” essentially all equate to being able to make people trip (e.g., slow them down while they're on the Endless Road). So, he cowers in his estate and trips people once in a while. Pathetic. The Horseman is the real power here and the only thing anyone fears. Eli..just exists in the Horseman’s world. This little lordling is not even worth the cost of a blade that could easily cut him down. 0.5 skulls.

haha i do have five cos ocs and i've played four of them. i am currently in one homebrew cos game, am joining another, and have played a oneshot for the first game as a different pc, and then i have my special little npc for the first game

wlw strahd | currently sixth level, playing to ten

OPHELIA TENEBRAE • my primary player character, dhampir ghostslayer bloodhunter (highly homebrewed, held together by ducttape) 6, taking her future levels in redemption paladin. there is no succinct way to describe her lore so i will link the closest i've gotten to succinct lore here. i love her so much and will talk about her always, she's very important to me and is a sweetheart who deserves a lot better than she's going through with so far.

MANARE ZALESKA • my current temporary character while ophelia is currently indisposed. a dusk elf (shadar-kai) hexblade 1 / watchers paladin 5, who has left home, made a deal with a being from the fairy tales she grew up hearing, and is on the path to take the throne of barovia or die trying. there's just one problem: she doesn't want the throne, much to her patron's dismay. (if you know you know but i can't be more specific as my fellow players follow me). she is also a sweetheart, but she is my black sheep, my shepherd, my sacrificial lamb, and she's doomed from the start.

LUCE SALUTARE • scourge aasimar divine soul sorcerer. lathander's silly rabbit, my special girl, ophelia's first love interest who is a character very near and dear to my heart on her own and has a lot of her own stuff going on in our cos game that is the Most I've Ever Been Rumbled in a game ever before. she's everything to me and has been getting closer and closer to her truest self every reincarnation.

children of the night | a oneshot set hundreds of years before wlw cos, 10th level with a high power character creation variant

SIANA KARNSTEIN • human bloodthirsty warlock 9 / life domain cleric 1; support but in the weirdest possible way as a life transference build. she was a paramour of strahd's and essentially a willing blood bank to vampires in castle ravenloft because a) vampires sexy and b) she could see the agony and sorrow in immortality in undeath and to some degree, felt sorry for them. survived the oneshot even though she took a 200 ft fall but also probably ultimately died of ‼️ BLOOD LOSS ‼️

curse of strahd <- man addition (as the group chat is named LMAO) | currently 11th level, pretty sure we're staying there

ELI TEPES • topaz dragonborn wildfire druid 3 / zeal domain cleric 6 / fighter 2 / draconic sorcerer 1. there isn't much i can say about eli, especially since i haven't started playing her and she's got QUITE the introduction planned lmao, but she's the cleric to a goddess called the Lightweaver, her body is entirely made out of charcoal, and she does not have a heart, there is just an empty cavity in her chest.

a general piece of trivia is that eli, manare, and siana's names, as they were all created four years after ophelia and luce, all reference vampires from previous media because i'm a big vampire nerd 🥰

but yeah, technically, three different games, only four of them are pcs, though the idea of playing luce in a cos game with a roleswap or her and ophelia would absolutely kill me. i love curse of strahd and vampires and all of these characters so much would answer any and all questions people have lmao

Adopted daughter of Castle Ravenloft’s seamstress, Sefa Vespera

She serves as one of Ravenloft’s courtiers and apprentice seamstress Dhampir (Human/Vampire)

As a Dhampir, she essentially killed her human mother in the womb. She has never met nor knows her biological mother, and she isn’t sure if she wants to, knowing that it was her fault that she died

Her biological father is a vampire named Henri Locke, and he works as Ravenloft’s “gatekeeper”

Henri doesn’t care about Elisabet in the slightest and has never once acted like a father to her

This takes place years after Elie gets the sun ring for Astarion, who left him for being too obsessed with paying a "debt" he never communicated about.

Elie would dissapear for months and that just ended up tiring his partner

The Lethal damage was caused by "someone" Elie won't talk about until they meet again and if he survives.
