20 THOUGHTS: Shinboners: Endgame

WHEN Kiss of Death is winning the Herald Sun tipping we really cannot be of any complaint

This year has been fascinating – the upsets persist, the evenness of the competition continues to emerge and touch wood the narratives well into the guts of autumn are primarily of the on-field variety.

A few teams are on the nose but the ladder by default does require four teams to occupy the bottom four positions to be fair, and a couple who are on the rise or rebounding just need to cool their jets. But there’s always a couple we can whack – so let’s.

1. Going to start with Ian Chappell. Always liked Chappelli, a captivating listen, a must-listen even. But he has gone out this week suggesting those who hold discontent still with David Warner need to reassess whether Steve Smith would be more worthy of such distain, given his role in the saga. Now Ian, I don’t for a second suggest Smudge is excused from blame, he if nothing else showed extremely dodgy leadership, but old’ hothead Warner conjured the whole idea up in the first place. In the on-the-nose stakes I have Warner well out in front, young Ian.

2. Let’s get the whacks out of the way this week, next up is Jack Darling. Firstly, in 2019, a socks-up merchant is always interesting. Ruckmen often do it for shin guards. No dramas. Lewis Taylor of Brisbane likes to too, but I think he is just a footy nerd who loves to get a kick on the weekend. But Darling does, and he screams dropkick. Thinks he is Christmas. But what he really is though is the beneficiary of being in the same forward line as Josh Kennedy, playing second foil and getting the second best backman every week. Sure, a nice grab and decent kick, but can’t do anything else to save himself and when the going gets going, like against Port on Good Friday, he looks as good as your Mum’s meatloaf. He can sod off.

3. Next up let’s go Jordan Lewis. Luke Hodge has probably gone on too long too but we abscond him for being a senior member of a rebounding team. What purpose is Lewis providing? Melbourne were supposedly unbackable for the flag in February and now when the wins are hard to hind, old no-touches Lewis looks like a witches hat St Kilda players need only breeze past en route to kicking a major. Dead set if anyone is looking to win a Coleman, hope you play Melbourne twice this year and get to play on Lewis both times, the Dees have many problems but rolling him out of the old folks home once a weekend to play D50 is a big one.

4. His teammate, Brayden Preuss, now champ, what’s going on here? I get the Roos are a bit of a mess but you’ve gone from second-fiddle to a 30-year-old good ruckman, to I don’t know, second-fiddle to a 27-year-old All-Australian ruckman. Next thing he’ll buy a Nokia phone to try and organise some HIH insurance. Don’t take stock market tips from Brayden anytime soon.

5. Back to Perth – Andrew Gaff. Let’s keep this one short, another 30+ on the weekend and for what impact? Said it before, will say it again, don’t care how ‘neat’ the twelve-metre foot passes are, give me half a dozen Robbie Gray disposals instead any day.

6. A half-baked one for Damian Barrett, not because he got something wrong because we all do that (hello Tom Lynch) but for suggesting on Triple M Saturday when Luke Hodge was on the phone he wasn’t so much wrong but partially incorrect. He said Hodge did the Channel Seven stuff last Thursday because of a contract, which is 100% not true. Does Hodge work for Seven occasionally, sure, but Damian, last Thursday had nothing to do with it, which gives you nothing to try and weasel out of the mistake with ‘yeah but not really’. But only a half-whack this time, you might be improving.

7. So let’s address Melbourne then, what’s happening there? Not sold its that bad, sure, losses banked are losses banked, but it’s not talent or skill, it’s the things like contested ball, tackles and decisions when defending. Its structure fall down, attitude or a bit of soft tacos, hard tacos. Not saying they’re morals against Richmond tomorrow night but I don’t think they’re 1914 University who went winless from 18 games with a 47% percentage. They’ll come good but perhaps too late – think 2018 Essendon.

8. As for Essendon’s opponents last week, North, yeah different story. I saw the Dees play ripping football as recently as last September, winning two finals and looking six sevenths of half decent. The last time I saw North Melbourne playing really good, reliable footy Anthony Stevens thought his missus was faithful. I have often thought the Roos were close to breaking out to use a North American term, but whatever promise the Crows win showed they blowtorched that a week later. Not good at all.

9. Brisbane, yeah this was obvious. West Coast started the season a week late although prone to a bye as shown last Good Friday anyway, and have now been smacked twice in two weeks by decent sides, the Dons and now Pies. This early in the season wins are wins but who are you beating? Gold Coast this week, lose that and I would not be shocked, the Suns are not that far off.

10. Quick one on Essendon, and it links to Melbourne, all their issues were minor set-up things or problems above the shoulders. Sure, they’ve only beaten a rotten Melbourne, an overrated Brisbane and then North but it ‘looks’ better and who is to doubt them being likely on Thursday creating all sorts of irresistible momentum thereupon?

11. As for the other ‘good news story’, can we just try and have a cold shower on Carlton? One win doth not a season make. The Doggies played a stinker for one, but when you only had won three of your last 36 games, getting a rare win certainly allows celebration and good feels but it doesn’t pull you out of the abyss. You’re still mighty shit until we see a bigger ‘better’ body of work than four nice quarters against a disinterested Footscray.

12. And given that the Hawks lost their annual grudge match on Monday, you don’t want to face Clarkson, on the rebound, down at Launceston. Hawthorn at the line on Sunday looks the kinda stuff house deposits are made of – big stride and just get your hands through it.

13. Although, last one with Carlton, don’t get sucked into Harry McKay fanaticism off the weekend, this column called him two or three weeks back. Don’t be a fool, only one gets serious with this sort of thing.

14. Gotta mention St Kilda, but do we want to? Second on the ladder, feels like its 2009 again, should we see if Micky Gardiner is free for a Marvel Stadium game-winning goal some time later in the season? But what, edged Gold Coast at home, just, yeah crazy, then have wins against Essendon when they were yuck, Melbourne who are still yuck and barely over a Hawthorn who hasn’t hit strides yet. It’s good form but don’t clear your Septembers just yet Saints fans, this looks like an invalidated 4-1 to this point.

15. To be fair though, and this applies across the board unless your Carlton as my feelings there as aforementioned are quite clear, this is the season for all seasons when it comes to momentum. Basically everyone has looked really good or really bad at one stage or another within just five weeks. The good is that it shows a team on a roll is as good a flag threat as any, but it also shows that if you lose it all of a sudden in June or July, you are cactus. West Coast, Richmond, simmering in midfield, could easily look like Winx just off the back before the turn right now. No-one is winning premierships in April, Geelong.

16. Give Steve Coniglio two votes in a losing team on the weekend, he’d be no more than three off the lead, who is probably still Lachie Neale who won’t even finish top five, and the Giant gun is still at $17. Any money you haven’t got on Hawthorn at the line needs to be invested here.

17. That said, Nat Fyfe again shows he is the best player in the game and I don’t care how good Patrick or Dustin are it’s not close. He stays fit Freo play finals.

18. Top 8, how many changes would I make to it, not many just for the exercise, Tigers definitely in, I don’t fully trust the Power, otherwise it’s the Dees to try and make a last minute lunge for say Freo or St Kilda’s spot, perhaps?

19. Footy TV rights, this one is interesting, next deal starts in three or four years’ time – Craig Hutchinson, old wobble-guts Hutchy, who knows media and broadcast deals like few others in town, reckons the next time around an Amazon Prime, Netflix or even Facebook gets involved somehow. Whether it’s one game a week or something, expect a non-traditional TV partner to get a slice of the action. Would be some sort of game changer in this country.

20. Want to mention our dear friend Izzy Folau. Sure, freedom of speech, religious freedoms, all that. And yes, the idea an atheist gets offended by a Christian declaring they are destined for Hell, something they strongly disbelieve as a concept, is just too funny.

But its less about his rights as a man of faith, but one of an employee who was warned for keeping things ‘in check’ who blatantly went against those wishes.

Poor analogy but if Bucks wants his midfielders to always kick long, Taylor Adams kicks short against Essendon, who is then pulled up on it before the following week’s game, but he continues to disobey instructions, even though kicking short is not a hanging offence in and of itself, you better believe Bucks might want to drop him for recalcitrance. It’s simple Izzy and has little to do with religion.

quick thoughts on the new S9 looks

Musa is perfection incarnate 10/10 no notes, she has MESH FUCKING GLOVES A COOL BELT AND PANTS. I will be mourning the loss of her long hair though, I always liked it and it would've been fun if they had tried to make her more masc while still keeping her long hair but also lmao at the idea of Winx making any of the girls more masc-leaning.

Aisha looks amazing as well I love how it's all of her colors and that she has melanin again but I'm still not sold on her now grey eyes. Everything else is great tho.

Flora's succulent jacket FUCKS and it is amazing, but also I wasn't the only one that for a brief second confused her with Darcy right. Like the way she's colored read far more Darcy than Flora to me.

Bloom looks great, she has finally embraced her horse girl status to the fullest she looks like Miley Cyrus in Hannah Montana S4. I of course don't mind the amount of pink she is wearing, as the proudest member of the Pink Bloom Rights movement, but I think they could've used a different shade of pink tbh.

I also love everything about Tecna it's the first time she looks like herself since SEASON FUCKING 5, WHICH WAS ALMOST 11 YEARS AGO AT THIS POINT, but I REAAALLY hope they don't go the "Tecna's an android/robot" route, I feel it cheapens her entire character and also it's the most boring route in all. If it means they're prosthetics tho I'm down for that, I wanna see how they deal with it.

STELLA. STELLA WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU. WHY IS SHE THE MOST GENERIC BLOND CHARACTER I'VE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE. I like the sunglasses but also AT LEAST ADD A BELT? PINS??? ANYTHING?????? SHE LOOKS SO UNDERDRESSED COMPARED TO THE REST RAINHOE ANSWER FOR YOUR CRIMES. Also the pigtails make her look 14 years old I think they should've kept her normal loose hair for this. I do like the bangs tho.

I got an ask about favorite winx transformations and if my thoughts have changed at all in the last couple years that was lost to the void when my computer crashed like 3 hours ago and while I made one post about that aeons ago I don't want to go edit it again so I'm just remaking it wholesale lol. I think at this point y'all are familiar with my TakesTM so I don't need an intro, all the shit is below the cut. also this is for. all of them. like the comic ones included. also gonna provide images for them because it is all of them and most people don't know about the 9 comic ones.

*takes a look at the amount of transformations* oh god we're at 24 of these fuckers? lord. anyways we're going worst to best and honestly most of the worst ones will be the comic ones lol. Also I'm grouping MW and Charmix as Charmix Specials-style because they are just an accessory on top and the rest is the same so they will be judged together so that brings it down to 23.

23 - Paintix

This is by far the most creatively bankrupt of the transformations. Literally the exact same ugly top skirt boots combo 8 times. I have never found scans of the issue its featured in but they could have done so much more with a transformation themed around color? like c'mon here.

22 - Greenix

This one is better than Paintix for at least giving the girls different colors for more than just one (1) part but it's still the same exact dress 6 times with only minimal variation on the vines along the top, and it's sad, because this is supposed to be THE vegetation transformation as it represents the ENTIRE POWER OF LYNPHEA at your fingertips.

21 - Trendix

THIS ONE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE ACTUAL GRAPHICS BECAUSE IT'S FROM A BOOK but the idea is that it's just Fashion Cheatcode the transformation and only Bloom, Stella and Flora get it so it's low, but above Paintix and Greenix for cheating in a way I find funny.

20 - Magic of Sports

Okay this one isn't even a real transformation as they just get wings with their regular fútbol fits (it's from the 2014 world cup issue) but at least the girls are wearing different outfits and the wings are also different colors so it has that going over Paintix and Greenix.

19 - Magic Rock

this one's a crime. but a crime with more thought put into it than the rest, so it's higher than them. Props to them, they all have different silhouettes and there are forms higher than them that can't break that treshold, but that still is not enough. What are they wearing. what is that. Musa why are you a makeup brush. Also they use this form to beat ghosts and win a music contest. what.

18 - Tynix

I've never been shy about my dislike for Tynix, and I feel this shows it well enough lol. bullshit obtainment aside I just think it's ugly - the construction paper gems, the shitty undersuit, the clunky broken glass heels, the random ruffles, it's all bad. The wings and the hair are cool and. that's about it really.

17 - Enchantix

I've also never been shy about my utter hatred for Enchantix, so I won't really rethread old ground here, but basically I think it's bullshit overall and it's only above Tynix despite hating Enchantix more because I can begrudgingly agree some of them are pretty. Still hate they're all flowers tho that's just bad. if you removed or adjusted the extra pink and restored everyone's skintones so they're not whitewashed S8 Enchantix would kick the ass of OG Enchantix to the curve visually (except Flora's she took a downgrade)

16 - Mermaid form

Yeah I also hate this one. I just don't think it makes sense to have fairy mermaids when mermaids are already a species in Winx and when the show cannot make up its mind if being fairy is a CHOICE or if being fairy is a BIOLOGICAL CONDITION, we don't need this shit muddling things up further. Points for giving Tecna proper wings tho good for them.

16.5 - S8 Sirenix and Crystal Sirenix

I'm also throwing the two S8 Sirenix ones in this tier because I don't like them either lol. S8 Sirenix fairs better than Crystal but not by that much.

15 - Travelix

We start the area where I just think they look... fine. I like the idea of the visuals and this is a transformation that SHOULD'VE been in the show proper (really they would've made more dolls that way) but it's also not anything groundbreaking. For those curious this is the transformation granted by the Stone of Memories that allows someone to travel in time. hence me saying it should've been in the show proper lol.

14 and 13 - Sophix and Lovix (position changes)

Some of them are good! Some of them suck ass. And therefore they end here because they aren't more than just Believix, Summer and Winter editions.

12 - Butterflix

I love the Butterflix wings and hairstyles and I think it had a solid IDEA but they put TECNA in a tutu and some crimes cannot be forgiven. points for having Stella's bodice be sunbeams tho.

11 - Dreamix

I don't really care all that much for Dreamix, but it edges out Butterflix, and that's the reason for this placement. I still don't get what the netting is supposed to be but I do love the wings.

10 - Onyrix

Onyrix also only slightly edges out Dreamix - the colors are worse and the wings are bad but I find it more visually interesting than Dreamix and it gave us Blue Stella back, so it has rights on that alone.

9 - Harmonix

We're getting into the ones I'm more positive for! but half of Harmonix is gorgeous half of Harmonix is bad. LOVE the idea of the trails and it has THE best spells out of any transformation but I genuinely don't think it's a transformation SUPER fit for being underwater and given that's its purpose it kinda. falters lol. Also I don't get how the trails are meant to be like mermaid tails? Everyone says that and I just don't see it. I see them as waterfalls more than anything else really.

8 - Magic of Food

Yes. I'm ranking the food form this high. Why? Simple - it's actually. really well done? Flora and Bloom's hair is trash but they went for a weird concept and made a transformation that actually looks pretty appropiate all in all, and I know this is because it's a sponsored transformation but hey, that cash went to a good-ass look lol.

7 - Magic of Joy

LOOK AT THIS. LOOK AT IT. ENCHANTIX WISHES IT HAD THIS EFFORTLESS ELEGANT SIMPLICITY. The wings being the same is lame but they all just look so pretty AND THEY TOOK THE TIME TO MAKE SURE TECNA HAD PANTS and I have to commend that. Bless you quokkas you funky animal you, thank you for giving this to us.

6 -Cosmix

OH COSMIX I WISH I COULD LOVE YOU MORE I genuinely find it pretty for the most part and it's the best Tecna and Musa have looked in years but I just cannot forgive Stella's vagina collar. I cannot.

5 - Charmix

What even IS there to say about the OG? the very first? It's iconic all on its own but I know my love of it is mainly guided by the happy memories of watching S1 and S2 as a child. That and some of the bags are not that great.

4 - Mythix

MYTHIX HAS RIGHTS AND I STAND BY THAT. IT'S WHAT ENCHANTIX SHOULD'VE BEEN. I am a person of simple tastes, I see magic wand I go apeshit. Also peak wings no wings rival the Mythix wings if you disagree you are wrong hate the dresses if you want but you cannot argue with me about the wings. I do agree some of the shoes are ugly tho.

3 - Sirenix

Yeah I love Sirenix. I understand the complaints about it being samey but I just love it - the ribbons, the hair streaks, the fins in the legs, the fish scale pattern leggings, I just think it slaps and it being wetsuit-based is so fitting for it. Shame about the same wings tho. Also we all know Sirenix has THE best transformation song ever made and that's a FACT.

2 - Bloomix

Bloomix is, objectively, the BEST the Winx have ever looked like. you cannot beat armor, you cannot. Stella's hair is a disgrace but it was the tradeoff for Flora being freed from her shitty hair blades for ONCE in her life and it's overall really good looking.

1 - Believix

Believix is peak and always will be. The perfect blend of fairy whimsy and modern aesthetics (for the time). The wings. the song. the transformation sequence. Really the only bad is Musa's shitty aerobics instructor pants and even then that fits her so I can't be TOO mad. Believix is love Believix is life.

How would you rank the canon Winx couples?

OH SWEETHEART YOU HAVE OPENED DISCOURSE

and I'm so bored I will answer this anyways I'm just not gonna use the actual winx tag lmao.

first place is Tecmy they are the only straights still standing in this franchise so dedicated to heterosexuality (I ignore that one comic where she dumped him for a surfer).

Second place is Brella even when they have forced drama it's more about THEM than about external sources and that makes it easier to handle for me personally.

Third place is Skoom, only because I understand that as The Main Couple they have to be filled with drama 24/7. That and I actually liked how they were handled in S5.

Fourth, fifth and sixth place is all of Aisha's comphets. They all suck in different ways but they're all short so you don't have to deal with all of them for too long so that puts them above the last 2 places.

Seventh is MuRi. I don't think I have to explain myself, it's MuRi. (we reject Riv*sa as the name in this household I don't care that it goes better with the other names it's a spawn of Fate and all spawns of Fate should die)

and so last place is Florelia, which I'm sure surprises people that don't know me. What is their crime you may ask? that they're BORING. I'll take toxicity over nothingness. That and their major fight in the entire show was about a dog and like. Flora was in the wrong I don't care Amarok deserved better lol.

My “I heavily dislike Flora” post has been making the rounds again, and I can’t be bothered to reblog it to add this, but a thing I didn’t say in that old post was that, fun fact, I ACTUALLY LIKE S1 FLORA. It’s S2-onwards Flora that I take issue with.

S1 Flora stood her ground, S1 Flora had a snarky side to her, S1 Flora could be a bit of an asshole, S1 Flora, while nice, was not usually very considerate of others, S1 Flora was proactive and took matters into her own hands if she felt no one else could help (Mirta’s pumpkinization, anyone?), S1 Flora didn’t immediately go “nooooooo don’t huwt the poow wittle thing twying to kill wus” (though to be fair, S6 Flora threw this in the trash too). S1 Flora was allowed to BE as a character, in a way that I feel S2-onwards Flora wasn’t.

S2 somehow does a regression with Flora making her the “soft plant mom that dies in one hit” archetype that sticks all the way until S5, with S6 flipping a switch and making her go feral 24/7 to the expense of everyone else. And I find that sad, because if they had stuck with S1 Flora, she wouldn’t be my least favorite character in the series.

I get it. bullshitting truly is the way to go sometimes lmao.

Entertain me for a bit, but the thought of "Daphne actually was one of the worst nymphs ever, if not the worst, and that's why no one wanted Bloom to know about her because she wasn't worth knowing about in depth other than as a footnote" entered my brain. And I am highkey vibing with it.

the way I thought of it was that she became a nymph (however that happens) relatively quick and thanks to having the god power it's believed it's just because she's gifted/a prodigy

but then they quickly realize it was all pure luck, and she actually kinda sucks at her job

of course being the princess of the realm of the god power offsets MOST things decrying her uselessness but that still stings a bit and she's not really. respected by the other nymphs. “only our leader because of the Flame”, “the power of nepotism is such a lovely thing, is it not?”

and then the fuckening happens, and she "dies" in it, further marring her reputation, NOW that she’s in charge it all falls down.

Someone like that doesn’t need to be remembered, they agree on that. the accursed little princess that cheated the system and doomed them all with her incompetence

Bloom still fighting the reputation her family built, but now it’s a negative one. “the sister of a failure is a failure by proxy”, “of royal blood yet as vulgar and common as the rest”

I don’t have a point to this the thought just came to me and like. y’know this is very interesting lol

Would you be able to provide an abridged retelling of the most significant years in the Winx fandom? Been interested in just how much of a shitshow this franchise has been as of late.

SO I've been like Actually In The Fandom since 2011 and after 12 years my memory's not the best, but people are free to add or correct anything I missed or got wrong lmao. I'll only be covering what I remember from interacting with others, the TRUE OG shitshow from the first 4 seasons is not something I'm as knowledgeable. I'm also not gonna name anyone in particular, just because that's like, the polite thing to do.

2011 itself was a Moment, as the Specials were coming out and with them a resurgence of the Dub Wars in full, Nick coming in as a new contender. Nick using Aisha's original name caused its own set of issues because people both thought they changed her name for no reason and because people argued that calling her Layla still was Wrong And Bad and they should stop, which like. yeah.

2012 is S5's debut. I feel that's self-explanatory enough. 2013 carried on with that as the season progressed, and it was also the time of the Transformation Wars -or more accurately, the Enchantix vs Everything Else War. If you didn't like Enchantix above all else you were invalid and wrong and other such synonyms, essentially, especially after Sirenix's official release.

2014 came with S6 (which has its own issues), but what I want to touch on is that 2014 came with the Couture artstyle. This marked the first official foray into the whitewashing of the Winx, though few people paid attention to it (that I saw, anyways).

2015 was S7's debut. This is also I feel self-explanatory enough. SURPRISINGLY I remember people PRAISING S7 at the time? which is weird as hell? But anyways, 2015 was the first time people noticed the Couture artstyle significantly whitewashing the Winx. This also was the time of the announcement of WOW.

2016 and 2017 I'll group together as it was the time WOW aired, and the full start of the Whitewashing debacle. It was the height of the whitewashing denial too, with people not seeing the issue with the Winx looking lighter (and some agreeing with them being lighter, even!) and coupled with WOW's mixed reception it was just Not a good time overall.

2018 reached another point in the Whitewashing as we got our first teasers for S8, which not only kept the whitewashing but also drastically changed the artstyle, more than WOW did. 2019 was S8's proper debut and it was, for a bit, a time of uncertainty, as during S8's airing Rainbow had seemed to indicate that the franchise was over (more notably, the renovations of Rainbow Magicland, which was primarily Winx-themed, removing Alfea Castle).

AND THEN ON THE SAME FUCKING DAY S8 AIRS ITS FINAL EPISODE WE GET FATE'S CONFIRMATION AND CASTING. September 17th was a day.

2020, 2021 and 2022 are what I'd call the Fate Era, as that was the primary part of the franchise at the time and I feel we're all familiar with its discourse, but the main points were the further whitewashing of Musa and Flora (as Terra is pretty much Flora), the show itself being bad with its multiple writing and costume choices, and just what it caused was. yeah. THANKFULLY IT'S DEAD NOW.

It was during this time that we got the full confirmation of S9 being a reboot, and now we're all just. waiting to see what comes out of that. AT THE VERY LEAST THEY AREN'T WHITEWASHED ANYMORE small mercies.
