"Not another foot."
Those were the words Joe Biden used as a mantra throughout his 2020 presidential campaign regarding the construction of the U.S.-Mexico border wall. But on Thursday, the Biden administration approved a plan to complete a section of the border wall near Yuma, Arizona.
The plan includes filling four major gaps in the wall that continue to allow the Yuma area to be one of the busiest corridors for illegal immigration crossings.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas authorized the new plan, which was started by the Trump administration, in an effort to "deploy modern, effective border measures" and improve "safety and security along the Southwest Border," the agency said.
The project will be funded under Homeland Security’s 2021 budget, though it was initially planned to be funded by the Defense Department.
Yuma’s border sector remains an unsolved issue for the Biden administration as border patrol agents have already stopped migrants more than 160,000 times from January through June in the sector this year.
The figure is nearly quadruple the number of migrant stops from last year and the Yuma sector remains the busiest migrant sector in the state of Arizona.

Del Rio and Rio Grande Valley in South Texas were the only other sectors with more traffic along the entire U.S.-Mexico border.
The Yuma sector was notably busy under former President Trump, who had portions of the border wall constructed or reinforced. There was also a plaque installed along the Yuma border in 2020, affirming Trump’s role in securing the wall.
Biden’s decision to secure the border wall comes after Sen. Mark Kelly, D-AZ, has called on the president to secure the border. Republican lawmakers have made similar calls.
The Biden administration’s quiet approval of the wall’s construction also comes after Biden often used it as a means of contrasting his policies with those of the Trump administration.
In the past, Biden was repeatedly critical of Trump, his border wall, and his immigration policies — which he referred to as "xenophobic" and "racist."

"Nor will it stem the numbers of undocumented, most of whom over-stay legal visas," he added.
During an interview in August 2020, Biden told NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro: "There will not be another foot of wall constructed on my administration, No. 1."
"I'm going to make sure that we have border protection, but it's going to be based on making sure that we use high-tech capacity to deal with it. And at the ports of entry — that's where all the bad stuff is happening," he added.

Biden also ceased all new border wall construction after he took office and has told Congress to cancel funding for border wall construction.
He has since ramped up border security measures. Biden also continues to use billions of dollars Congress appropriated for the wall’s construction. He cannot legally refuse to do so — he is only permitted to pause border construction projects.
Republicans have repeatedly sued Biden for pausing the border wall construction.
"The Biden administration’s flat refusal to use funds that have already been set aside by Congress to build the border wall is not only illegal and unconstitutional. It’s also wrong," Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a lawsuit filed October 2021.
In January, Biden announced a pause on constructing approximately 86 miles of a border wall along the Rio Grande citing an environmental review.

If Trump is reelected in Nov he will be the most well vetted politician in American history. He is not perfect by any means BUT every possible allegation against him is on the table.
This seems to be a common theme in Democrat offices. After getting elected you use your position to rack up the cash and then give it to family and lovers to wash it, then you take a cut back.

The all-day hearing escalated steadily throughout the day, culminating with Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis taking the witness stand for a combative brawl with defense attorneys that drew several rebukes from the judge.
There was talk of cash exchanging hands from Willis to Wade, where they store their money at home, CashApp usage, and their spending habits – all to get to the question of whether Willis benefitted financially from putting him on her staff.
The hearing will continue Friday with Willis still on the stand. The judge said he does not plan to issue a ruling on Friday.
The risks could not be greater, and Willis’ credibility is on the line.
Things quickly went off the rails. Willis didn’t act much like a traditional witness and was more like a prosecutor, arguing with the defense attorneys, raising objections, making legal arguments and even having exchanges with the judge. She even raised her voice at one point.
This led to a few rebukes from McAfee, who urged her and other attorneys in the courtroom to maintain “professionalism” and to not “talk over each other.” Willis repeatedly accused some of the defense attorneys of peddling lies – before and after the judge’s admonishment.
“You’ve lied in this. … I think you lied right here,” Willis said to attorney Ashleigh Merchant, pointing to copies of filings that raised accusations of self-dealing and nepotism.
On the stand, Wade stuck to his earlier claim – in a sworn affidavit submitted to the court – that his romantic relationship with Willis began in early 2022 and that they split travel and vacation expenses.

Wade and Willis have offered a simple explanation for why there’s essentially no paper trail to back up his claims they split expenses: Willis used cash.
Credit card statements submitted in Wade’s divorce proceedings show he paid for two flights for them in recent years, to San Francisco and Miami. They also took lavish trips to Belize, the Bahamas and some Caribbean cruises.
Trump lawyer Steven Sadow asked Willis about the breakup, eliciting an answer that revealed sexist remarks that Wade allegedly made to Willis in the past. She said, he “is used to women that, as he told me one time, ‘the only thing a woman can do for him is make him a sandwich.’” She explained that this was a part of their breakup – but it also was a defense to the self-dealing claims against her.
Nothing that happened Thursday undercut the factual allegations against Trump, Rudy Giuliani, Mark Meadows, or the other GOP allies who are accused of trying to overturn the 2020 election.
State prosecutors want that judge to issue a $370 million fine against Trump, after finding that Trump and his company committed significant fraud against banks and insurers by lying about his net worth and assets. They also want Trump barred from doing business in New York.

In an attached affidavit from Wade, he insisted he was no more than friends with the district attorney prior to his hiring in 2021.
“In 2022, District Attorney Willis and I developed a personal relationship in addition to our professional association and friendship,” Wade acknowledged.
Roman’s motion asks for the charges against him to be dropped and for Willis, Wade and the Fulton County district attorney’s office to be blocked from continuing to work on the case. The Hill requested comment from his lawyer and Trump’s lawyer, who joined Roman’s motion.
At nearly the same time, Wade’s estranged wife raised the issue in their ongoing divorce proceedings. Lawyers for Joycelyn Wade later filed bank statements appearing to show flights to San Francisco and Miami in the pair’s names while the district attorney’s office investigated Trump and his allies.
In the Friday filing, Willis denied any benefit from her relationship with Wade, indicating they divide their personal travel expenses “rather evenly” and have no shared finances.
“To be absolutely clear, the personal relationship between Special Prosecutor Wade and District Attorney Willis has never involved direct or indirect financial benefit to District Attorney Willis,” the filing reads.
Willis also said that Wade’s compensation, which amounts to at least $650,000, should not be compared to that of other special prosecutors who are tasked with “dramatically less time-consuming work.”
“Special Prosecutor Wade made much more money than the other special prosecutors only because Wade did much more work,” the filing reads.
Wade’s wife subpoenaed Willis for a deposition in the divorce case, but that testimony is indefinitely on hold after the Wades reached a temporary agreement settling the matter. Andrea Hastings, one of Joycelyn Wade’s lawyers, previously accused Willis of “trying to hide under the shield of her position” as district attorney by attempting to get out of testifying.
The revelation of the relationship threw a curveball into prosecution of the former president by Willis’s office, one of four criminal indictments Trump faces as he campaigns to return to the White House. Trump has called his case “totally compromised.”
Prior to Willis’s response, Steve Sadow, Trump’s lead attorney in Georgia, had publicly questioned on Thursday whether the district attorney would answer to the accusations that she went on personal vacations with Wade and whether Willis would reveal who in the office knew about their relationship.
“Will the response directly answer or dodge these factual questions,” Sadow wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
In a statement Friday, Sadow said Willis’s response asks the court to “turn a blind eye” to her alleged misconduct, claiming she “fails to provide full transparency and necessary financial details.”
Willis also replied Friday to a claim in Trump’s motion joining Roman’s bid to disqualify the district attorney that Willis sought to “foment racial animus” against the former president and his co-defendants to draw attention away from her affair.
“Defendant Trump’s motion fails to establish an adequate basis in law or in fact, but even if it somehow did establish such, it fails to articulate any reasonable argument connected to a real, actual legal standard,” the filing reads. “Instead, much like the motion advanced by Defendant Roman, Defendant Trump’s motion appears designed to generate media attention rather than accomplish some form of legitimate legal practice.”
Sadow said in his statement that Willis was attempting to “downplay” her church speech by “preposterously” claiming it had nothing to do with Trump and his co-defendants.
Willis’s acknowledgement of the relationship Friday was filed the day of the judge’s deadline for the district attorney to respond to Roman’s motion. A hearing is set for Feb. 15, where attorneys for Roman, Trump and at least one other co-defendant will seek Willis’s disqualification.
Willis’s filing argued there is no need for the hearing and urged the judge to dismiss the motion."

Donna was arrested in November of 2023 as she and her husband Harvey tried to board a plane out of the country. She was held at a Miami jail before being transported to the Leon County Sheriff’s Office in Tallahassee. On top of the first-degree murder, Donna is also charged with conspiracy and solicitation in what prosecutors are calling a “murder for hire scheme” [1].
State attorney Jack Campbell said that Donna and her husband were intercepted at the airport by the FBI and other law enforcement officers [2]. The two had tickets to Vietnam which has no extradition treaty with the United States. Campbell said that Donna’s attempted flight oversees pushed law enforcement to make a quick decision. The state did not have enough evidence to arrest Harvey, but Donna’s attempted flight will be used against her if the case moves to trial [2].
Donna’s arrest came only one week after her son Charlie was found guilty in the shooting of Dan Markel [2]. Charlie was found guilty of first-degree murder, solicitation, and conspiracy and faces a mandatory sentence of life in prison. Donna featured heavily in the trial, through wire tap recordings with Charlie that were played in court. Emails and texts were also read aloud by the prosecutors [2].
The 10-year long case is a winding road of family conflict and scheming. Dan Markel was a Florida State law professor and author who was married to Wendi Adelson, Donna Adelson’s daughter [5]. Wendi and Dan had two sons before an arduous divorce process began in 2012. On July 18, 2014, gang leader Luis Rivera and his friend Sigfredo Garcia stalked Markel after he left his sons preschool. Markel returned home and was shot twice in the head in his garage. A neighbor saw Markel and called 911 but the ambulance didn’t arrive until almost 20 minutes after. Markel died 14 hours later at the hospital [5].
Investigators used cellphone records and surveillance video to track the car that Rivera and Garcia drove [5]. Rivera testified that he and Garcia were paid $100,000 in a murder-for-hire plot. The two had received the money the day after the shooting and they split it with Katherine Magbanua, who had set up the deal. Prosecutors argued that Markel’s murder “stemmed from the desperate desire of the Adelson family for Wendi and the two sons to move to South Florida”. Markel had won split custody during the divorce as well as an order prohibiting Wendi from moving the children away [5].
In the 2016 arrest affidavit for Sigfredo Garcia, Charlie and Donna Adelson were implicated in the contract killing, although they were not charged at the time [5]. Katherine Magbanua was found guilty in 2022 of being the go-between in the murder-for-hire plot. In Charlie’s trial, he testified that Katherine had come to him the night of the murder and said that she knew the people who had killed Markel and that they wanted a third of a million dollars within 48 hours or “one of his family members would be next”. Charlie said he was too scared to go to the police and gave Katherine the money. Charlie testified that Katherine was the mastermind behind the entire plot [5]. Wendi Adelson was given limited immunity to testify at Charlie’s trial and said that her family had nothing to do with Markel’s murder [3]. Charlie Adelson was the fourth person to be found guilty in the conspiracy to kill Dan Markel [5].
Following the divorce, Wendi had her son’s names changed to Adelson and cut off the Markel family’s visitation after Garcia’s arrest affidavit named members of the Adelson family as co-conspirators in the murder [5]. In 2020, Dan Markel’s parents began pushing for legislation to give grandparents in Florida more rights to visit their grandchildren after the death of a parent. A version of the Grandparents Visitation Rights bill (also known as the Markel Act) failed initially in 2020 and 2021 but was passed in 2022 [5].
Recently, Donna’s attorney Marissel Descalzo filed an emergency petition in December of 2023 with multiple allegations, including accusations that jail staff have been forcing Donna to sit naked and eat with her hands in a small cell, as well as withholding medication [1]. The motion states that the alleged treatment is a violation of Donna’s 6th Amendment rights because she has been unable to communicate with her attorney or assist in her defense. Descalzo requested that the court release Donna on house arrest and that the court issue Donna a psychological evaluation to place her in a different unit. Descalzo argued that the evidence against Donna is “circumstantial at best” and that “there is a presumption of innocence in this country” [1].
New court records show phone calls between Donna and Charlie after his conviction. It includes multiple conversations in which Donna is telling Charlie that she is “getting things in order, creating trusts, and making sure that her grandchildren are taken care of” [2].
Donna has pleaded not guilty to her charges [4]. She appeared before Leon County Circuit Judge Stephen Everett for an arraignment and a hearing on a motion filed by her defense to move her off suicide watch at the Leon County Detention Facility. This was the first time that Donna has appeared in court in person. Donna was admonished by Judge Everett after she audibly scoffed after a prosecutor stated that Donna mentioned committing suicide before her arrest and later during her arrival at the jail. Judge Everett also denied the order for a psychological evaluation of Donna [4].
Donna has recently hired a new defense team to represent her. Court records indicate that she will now be represented by Daniel Rashbaum, who represented Charlie Adelson at his trial [6]. Donna Adelson is being held without bond in the Leon County jail pending her next court hearing [3].
