An enormous ice jam has backed up the Kankakee River. What to do about it? Well, it so happens they have a four-gigawatt heat source in the form of Dresden Units 2 and 3. Each reactor generates about 3 GW of heat, of which 1 GW goes out on the busbars as electricity, and the remainder has to be disposed of somehow.
Workers are siphoning water from the Dresden Generating Station's cooling lake. The water in the lake is used to cool the nuclear power plant, but it's warm enough to melt ice. Since before 11 a.m. on Wednesday, the county was pumping the warm water into the Kankakee River.
The specific heat of fusion of water is so large that even this isn’t an immediate or perfect fix, but apparently it really does help.

On Tuesday 12 June, leading experts and solution providers from Denmark and the Netherlands gathered in Hague to share insights on how to amplify the use of digitalisation in the district heating sector. A new case catalogue showcasing how data and digital tools are transforming Denmark's district heating industry was released at the event.
Heating buildings and homes account for almost 25% of global energy consumption, and 20% of all energy-related greenhouse gas emissions.
One way to solve the challenge is by using technology and data to optimise production and save energy. Heating up the “twin transition” by ensuring that the digital tranformation and the clean energy transition works in tandem, efforts can unlock benefits for the individual sectors and our societies at large.
Denmark and the Netherlands unite to digitalise district heating
Digitalisation has the key to unlocking improved efficiency across the entire energy supply chain, from planning, and production to demand management. Sa such, digital efforts are critical enablers for emerging trends such as sector integration, smart demand response, decentralization and distributed energy. Figures from the International Energy Agency (IEA) show that digital solutions have the potential to cut total energy use in residential and commercial buildings by 10%  by 2040.[1]
Denmark with its long-standing focus on digitalisation in the energy sector has managed to keep household energy consumption consistently low due to a historic focus on energy efficiency measures. Through developing smart thermostats, measurement technology, software for building management, and artificial intelligence, Danish lessons show that it is possible to do more with less.
Now, ensuring that these experiences are brought to play elsewhere, Denmark and the Netherlands are teaming up to exchange knowledge and help inspire the use of  digital solutions in each other’s energy sectors.
Heating up the twin transition in The Hague
As part of a one-day conference, State of Green and its partners at the Danish Embassy in The Hague, the Confederations of Danish Industries[2] and the Dutch organisations FME[3] and InnovationsQuarter[4] brought together market leaders and stakeholders from both Denmark and the Netherlands in the Hague. The purpose of the day was to exchange perspectives, share experiences and highlight solutions that accelerate the convergence of digitalisation and green energy.

The day included a launch of the case catalogue “Digitalisation of the Danish District Heating Sector”[6]. By presenting concrete examples of how to implement digital solutions in practice, the aim is to inspire and pave the road for further digitalisation of the sector – both locally and globally – in the future.

A 12 year old school student died after he was allegedly made to run in extreme heat despite asking for water.
Californian Yahshua Robinson was allegedly forced to run in 36C heat after wearing the wrong clothes to gym class. He collapsed and later died after running, on the same day his mother, a teacher, issued a warning about dangerous weather conditions.
Yahshua said he felt unwell before he collapsed students in the boy’s class told his aunt Amarna Plummer, according to NBC Los Angeles.
Plummer said: “He was reaching out to the teacher, saying he needed some water.”

Emergency responders rushed to Yahshua’s aid, transporting the boy around 16 kilometres from Canyon Lake Middle School to Loma Linda University Medical Center – Murrieta, where he was pronounced dead at 12:55 p.m, Riverside Sheriff’s office said in a press release.
The 12-year-old’s family is now looking for answers following their child’s death.

Do any of my followers (or anyone else) have any good suggestions for easy on-the-go meals/meal-replacement-bars?
My current work arrangement has me driving between locations and that cuts into my lunch break (the rest of that break often gets interrupted) so it's most ideal for me to eat during that 10-ish minute drive.
But all the meal-replacement bars I'm seeing are either for athletes or for weight loss, neither of which apply to me.... I just need something to get me through the latter half of my day.

Movie #13 was District 9 and oh boy.
I watched this movie when I was really really young, and the only thing I remembered was "hehe silly aliens and a silly guy with alien arm hehe", absolutely none of that awful bullshit they were forced to go through.
I heard that this movie had a dark and fucked up ending, but I think it was great and not that at all and the only way it could've been better is if Wikus died. Fuck that guy, I hated him from the very beginning. The only reason I didn't want him to die towards the end was so that he could protect "Christopher" and his son escaping because the aliens are the only likeable characters in this whole movie. All of the humans absolutely suck ass. I literally told myself that if the father and son at any point died, I was just going to shut off the movie and stop watching. The aliens deserved a happy ending (which they got) and nobody else.
Part of me wished that as he got the alien arm he could've had that "you know, we're not so different, you and I" talk with the aliens but he never did and he just stayed an absolutely awful person. Though maybe now that he is an alien, he'll finally become normal towards his new brethren.
But yeah, a really frustrating movie, but I really enjoyed it. The aliens vaguely reminded me of the Vortigaunts from Half-life if they had been abused instead of universally loved by the humans.
One thing I didn't like is the very anti-alienfucker stance all of the characters take. Those prostitutes knew what was up, human prostitutes and the aliens are the only innocent souls in this movie.

But to the extent possible, it should be built close to the load.

Residential district gets heat network

The 316 homes of the Houtpark construction project at Be-Mine[1] in Beringen will be heated and cooled with a heat network. This central network will store heat and cool underground, which is interesting both financially and ecologically.
The plans for the large Houtpark residential project are still on the drawing board, but the partners involved have already commissioned a study to determine whether the more than three hundred planned residential units can be heated via a heat network. That indeed appears to be feasible and Friday was concluded with a joint declaration of intent signed by Be-Mine, IFte and the city of Beringen.
Underground storage
“That study had to be done in advance, because the drilling and the construction of the network must of course be included in the overall plan. In concrete terms, we are going to work via drilling at a depth of between 110 and 150 meters in order to enable underground heat and cold storage. Two so-called drill pairs are currently being considered, which arrives at four drilled wells,” explains alderman for the Environment Tijs Lemmens (Voluit). “During summertime we will store the warm air in the soil in subterranean, insulated pipes to raise it again in the winter to heat the houses. This system can also be used for cooling. The biggest advantage is that there are no CO2 emissions and it is also financially more attractive. The additional cost of this system is therefore almost negligible.”

[1] be-MINE is the renovated coal mine site in Beringen-Mijn in Belgium where the old mine buildings are being restored and given recreational functions and new buildings are also being built. The project was previously called My-World. In addition to the Mining Museum, there is also a swimming pool, an indoor climbing centre and shops. The renovations were approved by the Flemish government in 2009 and will continue until 2020. In 2018, a total of more than 80 million euros was invested and more than 300 jobs have been created so far. In total, 32 hectares of industrial land and 100,000 m² of buildings are being redeveloped, including the coal washing and bathing complex. It is the largest industrial heritage site in Flanders and is also very unique in Europe. The site together with its infrastructure has been a protected monument since 1994.

I saw 'No AC' trending on Twitter a few minutes ago: primarily from California users, but apparently some shite went down in Denver concerning heat as well.
I'm lucky enough to have an AC in my apartment but I really try to only use it during the day for my birds so they don't overheat while I'm at work and unable to keep an eye on them.
... At work things are greeaaat though. Constantly hearing students complain about the classroom being too hot because, for some reason, the district thinks that 72 is an acceptable temperature to lock the ACs at. And, even then, that doesn't help in the face of having to keep the door constantly propped open because kids want to trickle into class whenever they feel like and the fact that the outside temperature surges to 108 regularly.
Oh, also, the AC turns itself off at random. So that's fun.
