In Hinduism, the name of a person is very important. Because this is the name in the society, which helps to make him talented. There is a belief in Hinduism that a person's name should be named by the scriptures.
The person's qualities-demerit, profit-loss, character, etc. should also be in his name, only then that person's name is considered good. Your character should be known by your name, as well as the meaning of your name should also be reflected in your name. Only then the name of the person is considered all-encompassing.

Aging: An Ineluctable Phase Looking for Mind and Heart!
Tumblr media
Gerontology and the State of Elderly Care in India
                                                                                     Catherine C. Nair
Did you know there is a discipline that studies the processes in/of aging , taking into account all the aspects of a person as well as his/her environment, just like sociology that studies societies in the same way (studies politics, anthropology, human behavior, history etc to observe the society holistically) ? This interesting discipline is called Gerontology. Gerontology is the study of aging processes and individuals across the life course. It includes: the study of physical, mental, and social changes in people as they age, the investigation of changes in society resulting from our aging population; and the application of this knowledge to policies and programs. Gerontology is multidisciplinary in that it combines or integrates several separate areas of study. (What is Gerontology?, n.d.)
It comes from the Greek words geron, meaning “old man”, and -ology, a suffix meaning “the study of”. The term gerontology was coined in 1903 by Élie Metchnikoff, a Russian zoologist who did immunology research and won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work.  Gerontology is not to be confused with geriatrics, which specifically refers to the medical care and treatment of older people.
Gerontology research, and other forms of scientific research, really took off during the 19th Century, when the use of the compound microscope became widespread. Many scientists at first began to study bacteria under the microscope in order to study senescence, or aging, but this proved difficult because bacteria reproduce by dividing themselves into two cells and do not become senescent in the way that the cells of multicellular organisms do. Multicellular animal models had to be used instead, and this is one reason why the use of mice became so ubiquitous in research. With the use of the microscope, scientific knowledge advanced a great deal. For the first time, researchers could examine the processes of aging at the cellular level, and really begin to understand the specific changes that take place in the cells of older people. (Editors, 2017)
Since gerontology is multidisciplinary, it opens scope for various disciplines to come together for work and study the process of aging. Just like child welfare requires pediatricians, child psychologists and education professionals to contribute, similarly in gerontology there is a scope of nutritionists, psychologists, biologists, nurses etc to come together and study the processes of aging, their psycho- social and physical implications.
Though in India this discipline has not gained popularity and is less known by people, there have been some important expansions that are needed to be highlighted. A major development was the founding, in 1983, of the first research center on aging in India. The Centre for Research on Ageing (CEFRA) was established in the Department of Psychology of Sri Venkateswara University (S.V. University) and has been supported by the University Grants Commission’s Departmental Special Assistance Program (UGC/SAP) since 1990 (CEFRA, 2014). In contrast to the development of research, the trajectory of gerontological education has been less robust. The first graduate course in gerontology was introduced in 1976 by the Department of Psychology, S.V. University, as an applied branch of psychology at the master’s and doctoral levels. It was followed by a master’s specialization and a multiyear diploma course in 1990, supported by the UGC/SAP. (Ramamurti V. Panruti, 2015)
Older persons are considered as most revered members of the society in our country but treated otherwise when it comes to practical behavior with older people. Old age is a stage of life that every human being ultimately reaches and it is inevitable. In this time people dread old age but what the youth should be aiming is to create a world where people do not fear old age as a phase which they consider an inescapable prison, but look forward to it as a phase of vacation where they can enjoy and have their loved ones to care of them after decades of having worked so hard and showered their loved ones with care and love. (Prasad, 2017)  Digambar Chapke of the All India Senior Citizens Federation estimates that seven out of every 10 senior citizens in the country live in poverty. “Of the more than 100 million senior citizens, 70 million have retired from the unorganized sector and have no pension or social security. Another 5 million worked in the organised sector — but in one of the 108 industries that have provident fund. The pension given to these senior citizens is inadequate. So in total, 75 million people have no social security. (Nair, 2015)  There are also other instances of abuse and neglect of senior citizens that we see in our country. There is a need for gerontology as a discipline in our country so that we can truly give the respect, honor and care that they deserve, doing so we can truly claim that “respecting our elders” is a value that citizens of India uphold.
