Cinema viewing 🤔
Is it a big topic? Every one does this for entertainment,as a critic, some for timepass ,kind of innumerable reasons. Then why me? To be frank cinema viewing is inculcated in DR family as a ritual from childhood. Our maternal uncle K.S. Satyanarayana who was a film person, working with Anjali pictures, AVM pictures and other movie makers of olden days. As I recall during the years between 1950 to 1967 were golden days of our cinema viewing. He gave an opportunity to act with Jayalalitha in Nanna karthavya. Post that he moved Bangalore to write scripts and lyrics.

Well we enjoyed free passes for many old time theatres like sun, paragon, geity, casino and Chitra if I remember correctly. We used get passes in batch of four per show. Matinee and first show. We would have enjoyed watching all kind of movies Shivaji Ganesan ‘s long dialogues, MGR’s style, Gemini Ganesan’s romantic and tragic movies. Savithri, Saroja Devi and Jayalalitha were all popular heroines of those days.Director Sridhar made more romantic movies with Gemini Ganesan. Some of the Hindi movies we would have seen were Muhal eh Azam,Taj mehal and Bees Sal baad and so on. I remember to have seen Dev Anand’s guide few times. My brother Juli came to school to pick me, for which I was to produce a letter from parents! I was well versed with almost all Soundararajan and P.Suseela duets and solo songs. My singing talent started from movies!
Later days after moving to West Mambalam, there came a break for crazy viewing because we had to spend . This was the time Balachander movies with Kamala Hasan and Rajni Kant , Sridevi started getting importance. Balu Mahendra came to limelight with new star and great music.Again the craze of watching Hindi movies started. Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna were very popular those days. Some of movies I would have watched 5 to 6 times with friends. That was Jawani ka josh. My dear brothers used to cater money for these kind of expenses.

Then came time to appreciate Satyajit Ray, Bimal Roy, Mrinal sen etc and finally Ritu Parna gosh. We would have seen all the series.
Having been constant movie fan for the past 60 years of my life, I would have watched innumerable ones in different languages. National and international level! Language was never been a barrier.
When ever the family is on any conversation, there always will be a discussion about movies . Brother Balu will discuss in depths, if I remember correctly it was about ‘Azhagar samiyin kudhirai’he wrote and wanted to send it to a magazine for publishing.
Those days having seen only once, movies like Ustaad hotel, Nandanam,Diamond necklace , Bangalore days, Charlie kind of feature films had impact on our thoughts and were ruminating in our minds, some were ever green. Even today we do appreciate movies like, gully boy, manmarzeyaan and super deluxe kind .But I feel they need to be watched a minimum of two to three times to understand the ideology. Good ones watched recently were Virus and Unda. Though these had good reviews failed satisfy.
Why was I writing all this? What’s the idea behind all this?!
In the last decade three movies gave me high level satisfaction to my inner self .

Naal a Marathi movie watched recently. Many would have seen the first few on my recommendation, the last one I highly recommend for the simpler way it is made and the acting by an eight year old boy Chaitanya. This film is directed by Sudhakar reddy yakkanti and produced by Nagraj popat Rao manjule of Sairat fame. Naal meaning umbilical cord is a beautiful piece of emotional film. Srinivas pokale as Chaitanya , Devika daftardar his adapted mother and Dipti Shrikanth Devi his biological mother . Nagraj himself has taken up a small role in the movie. The story is pretty simple about a boy’s behavioural changes when he learns about his biological mother. Outstanding acting by the kid as Chaitanya. His adopted mother has done a wonderful job,so too the biological mother, though comes for few minutes towards the end of the movie . These kinds of movies never vanish out of heart and mind.
The story revolves around a small village at the banks of a river, where Nagraj is a landlord. His family with an old ailing mother, wife and an eight year old school going happy kid. Very impressive cinematography of the village, school children and their class. Chaitanya comes to know through his mama that, whom he is calling aayi is not his original and she lives at a different places. Sudden changes in his activities, mother goes perplexed .
Grand mother goes sick and to be taken to near by town to a vaidh .Father decides to take her in a bullock cart for crossing the river and further by bus. Chaitanya joins the trip and tells his friend that he will not come back. So goes the beautiful journey on a bullock cart across the river. Unfortunately before reaching the bus stop the grand mother breaths her last and they are unable to continue the journey. The disappointment shown by Chaitanya is outstanding. Then back home, the last rituals take place. Many visitors and few stay back after the funeral. Chaitanya keeps watching a lady but unable to ask her . She too pretends to have not seen him. May be the promise or what. Chaitanya happily serves tea to everyone. His mother at home is also careful and possessive about him, constantly watching his activities.
Finally the lady leaves , Chaitanya stands watching her and runs to get an umbrella for her, as it rains. Tears rolling down, both mother and Chaitanya move from each other. Brilliant scene. Next morning his father brings home a stuffed calf to pacify his buffalo, mother effectively milk the buffalo, Chaitanya enjoys a glass of fresh milk.
I have watched Fundry and Sairat of Nagraj Manjule directorial movies. Fandry was of film festival quality and Sairat was super hit commercially. This one he has produced, his name appears many times in titles, I exactly couldn’t read . Eagerly anticipating his next movie Jhund releasing in coming September . Read Amitab Bachchan and Sairat actor Rinku Rajguru are starring in the movie.
Hoping to get a good stuff from you Nagraj.
