There Is No Saving Deandre Ayton
Among my worst predictions of the NBA playoffs, was that Deandre Ayton would finally come to the forefront as a result of recognising how much more room he’d have on the court as a result of Devin Booker and Kevin Durant’s scoring.
That didn’t happen.
Instead there was a steady post-season routine of less than 20 points per game against the Clippers. Production that would only get worse once the 2nd round began against the Nuggets.

Typically speaking, I do not agree with ESPN’s Stephen A Smith, but his recent verbal execution of Deandre Ayton was warranted, and the issue is that comes after a long string of disappointments and just a general disengagement with the rest of the team.
Deandre Ayton giving you 4 points in game 4, 8 points in game 5 and not a single game near the 20 point mark that is meant to be a staple of his game. His 2021 highlights against the Denver Nuggets, but a mere mirage of what should have been.
So bad were his displays against the Suns this year, that Kevin Garnett and Matt Barnes had a lengthy discussion about his play on KG’s podcast.
The Phoenix Suns front office, was irresponsible in bringing this man back to Phoenix after 2021, and they should have never matched the Pacers offer during that summer’s offeseason.
So bad has Deandre Ayton’s effect on the team been, you could literally see the other Suns players chewing him out at different times these playoffs and during last year as well. This is more than a year worth of bad on court interactions between Deandre and a host of other teammates.

The Suns have responded promptlly and it loos like they’ve chosen to aid the investment they made in Ayton when they gave him that money, and they have fired Monty Williams as their head coach.
To be fair, in interview before his firing was announced, Monty sounded like he kind of saw it coming, noting how many other championship winning coaches had been let go in the last few months.
The strangest out of all of Deandre’s decisions is his decision to sit out game 6. Ayton was reported to have bruised ribs, but it wasn’t thought to be serious enough to sit out the game, which in hindsight now look like a sort of protest because Ayton has played his cards close to his chest when asked by the media about it his relationship with Monty.
In all honesty, I thought Kevin Durant joining the team would continue to help Ayton and Ayton himself spoke about how playing with Booker and KD “allows him so much space, as far as giving him driving lanes”.
It can still be good for Ayton in Phoenix but it’s now or never and no matter who the head coach is, it will be incumbent on Deandre to play better, as has been the focus of his conversations with Phoenix Suns GM and former player for the Cleveland Cavaliers, James Jones.
