A few years back, @darenbader and I used to have daily draw lunches several times a week. He called dibs on this one, but then i lost it. It turned up a while ago while I was unpacking some moving boxes, so I sent it off to my buddy. It's long overdue as he already sent me an amazing sketching as a trade. #jobus #joeolson #sketchbook #sketch #drawing #markerart #markers #art #ink #skull #skullart #artistsoninstagram #instart https://www.instagram.com/p/CnM6tf7JKVY/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The artist Daren Bader is the ex lead-concept artist for the video game Red Dead Redemption 2. I have been in love with his work for a long time. In each of his pieces he captures an immense amount of depth and detail. I think the reason I love his work so much is because he is responsible for bringing the world that writers create to life, and he does it beautifully over and over again. His instagram is linked here: https://www.instagram.com/darenbader/?hl=en
How do you challenge yourself in your work and process?
I often challenge myself by trying new art mediums that I have no experience with. I wouldn’t say that I am a fantastic artist but I love the ability to express myself creatively. I have tried a multitude of art forms through both courses and at home experimentation. By changing materials I learn how each one alters my personal creative process, and how they both expand my knowledge of art and challenge me to try new styles. I am not a fan of repetition in my life, this method ensures that no two pieces of my art are the same.
How do you incorporate failure into your work and creative process? How do you fail forward?
Typically I don’t like making mistakes when I do art. If I am copying anatomy from a reference image I will catch myself stuck on one part of a drawing making no improvements because I will do nothing but notice the flaws in my own work. To avoid this dilemma I’ve stopped restricting myself by thinking about my newest art projects as openly as possible. I now take very general ideas of the imagery I wish to create and I just see where it takes me. It’s better than trying to conform to a specific idea that I have in my mind that I am not capable of translating to a page.  Sometimes I still find myself getting hung up on trying to replicate a mental image, and the only way for me to continue is to step away from my art and return to it at a later time with an emptier mind.
