SUMMER 2019 MESSAGE FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN
05/23/2019
BY SJECWARRENTON
SUMMER 2019 MESSAGE FROM THE SENIOR WARDEN
BY COLIN BORGSTROM, SENIOR WARDEN
Tumblr media
As spring slowly turns into summer, we welcome the opportunity to support Fr. Ben and his family on his well-deserved sabbatical over the next few months.
This has been a long time in planning and preparation, and our church leadership is ready to execute on its plan.  If you missed our two previous letters related to the sabbatical, you can read them here and here.
THIS SUMMER: PASTORAL AND LITURGICAL NEEDS
Fr. Randolph will be presiding over Sunday liturgies throughout this time.  He will have office hours Sunday through Tuesday (including Sunday afternoons) and is ready and able to meet with you on liturgical or pastoral needs.  He will also be on call for pastoral needs throughout the week.
Please reach him through the church office at (540) 347-4342, his cell phone (202) 841-8365, or through email to schedule an appointment or for any emergency pastoral need.
Please do know that Randolph is not full-time and is only available Wednesday through Saturday for extenuating circumstances.
THIS SUMMER: OPERATIONAL NEEDS
For business affairs of the church, including property management, financial, and anything else non-pastoral or non-liturgical, please reach out to myself as senior warden or Margy Thomas as junior warden.
You may email or call us with our listed contact info and you may also reach us through the church office.  Your vestry members can also be contacted if needed and will bubble up questions, concerns, or comments to the appropriate committees.
Summer months tends to be slower with travel and vacations for parishioners, church leadership and staff.  But remember we are still open for business!
Clubs and committees will continue to meet, services will still be held, and planning is underway for the new church year which will be upon us in just a few short months.  So get involved and stay involved in our program offerings all summer long!
(And a pitch from our treasurer – keep those pledge payments coming in as well!)
Fr. Ben will not be going far for the first part of his sabbatical.  You may still see him on a walk throughout town, at the store, or at a sporting event (or golfing!).  None of us need to avoid him for the next 10 weeks, but please remember that he and his family are on this journey of refreshment together, and we should avoid ‘talking shop’ with him for the next few months.
If there is a emergency need to speak with Fr. Ben on a pastoral matter, please reach out to Fr. Randolph or one of the Wardens for next steps.
The leadership of St. James’ is excited for this season of revitalization for both Fr. Ben and our parish and look forward to the new opportunities ahead – please join us with your support and anticipation for our next journey together!

Top 300 Keeper League Skaters – April 2019
Here are the Top 300 skaters to own in your points-only keeper leagues – April edition!
As with every year for the last 17 years, my April, May and June adjustments are casual. The July and August editions are my "audit" rankings because, thanks to the Fantasy Guide, every detail of every player within every team is analyzed top to bottom. April? Not so much. I go over every player on my spreadsheet and wipe the slate clean for the season just completed, and I make my best guess – no formulas – at how they will do next year. I tweak the 3YP, I adjust the team offense value (i.e. for Columbus I tweaked it downward because I expect them to lose a lot of offense this summer).
What's left is that the young players improve, the older players slip. The injured players get a clean slate and move up, the over-achievers of 2018-19 move down. The late-season surges of some promising young players get a bit of a bump. Doing the April rankings are always a lot of fun. My goal is to do my best to get these as close to what I come up with in August after extensive analysis as I can. The players I'm 'way' off on I take it hard. I want to be a savant with this – I want spew out an accurate player value without doing the work (and then prove myself right after doing the work in the summer).
As always, players between +/- 5.0 in the ratings should be considered equal. Click on any player name to be taken to his incredible stats page (with charts, game logs, graphs, fancy stats – everything you need, even customizable date windows you can look at).

It’s No. 1 Denver vs. No. 2 Minnesota Duluth for college hockey’s grand prize
CHICAGO — It’s No. 1 vs. No. 2, again. It’s the National Collegiate Hockey Conference regular-season champion against the NCHC tournament champion. It’s the two best teams from December, and now. It’s Denver and Duluth — fittingly. In a quintessential NCAA title game Saturday night at the United Center, the top-seeded Pioneers (32-7-4) take on the No. 2 Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth (28-6-7) in a win-win situation for the Colorado Springs-based NCHC. The country’s most competitive conference had the country’s top-two ranked teams most of the season, and the sport’s final game of the season is a rematch of the two-game series at Magness Arena in December, when UMD was ranked No.1 and DU was No. 2. Denver coach Jim Montgomery, who is trying to become the fourth person to win an NCAA title as a player and head coach, summed up the rivalry in two words: “Fiercely respectful.” UMD, which won 3-1 in Denver on Dec. 10 to salvage a series split — the Pioneers won the opener 4-3 — is on an eight-game winning streak and 8-1-1 in its last 10 games. DU is 17-1 in its last 18 games, with the lone loss coming March 17 to North Dakota in the NCHC semifinals. The Bulldogs went on to beat North Dakota for the NCHC tournament championship. Denver routed Notre Dame 6-1 in Thursday’s national semifinals and is seeking its eighth national title. Minnesota Duluth, which scored in the final minute of regulation to beat Harvard 2-1 in the other semifinal, is vying for its second. “We all know how good and talented Duluth is,” Montgomery said before practice Friday at the United Center. “They’re a mentally tough team. They’re hard in all three zones. They don’t give you an inch. We know that. You’re going to have to go out and earn it. That’s why I think it’s going to be a great game.” Denver has advanced to its 11th national title game in relatively easy fashion. The Pioneers rolled over Michigan Tech (5-2) and Penn State (6-3) at the Midwest Regional in Cincinnati before Thursday’s blowout over the Fighting Irish. The Pios have outscored their three opponents 8-1 in the first period and built 5-0 leads against Michigan Tech and Notre Dame. The Bullodgs, on the other hand, have won three thrillers — beginning with 3-2 overtime wins against Ohio State and Boston University at the West Regional in Fargo, N.D. Forward Alex Iafallo scored with 27 seconds remaining to beat Harvard, which led 1-0 early. “Our team has certainly had their character tested a lot in the second half,” Bulldogs coach Scott Sandelin said. “We haven’t had any blowout games. But I think our guys have grown a little tighter together. I think that drive, when you start finding ways to win those games, continues to grow.” UMD will gets its first look playing against DU leading scorer Henrik Borgstrom, the freshman from Finland who missed the December series with an illness. “I saw those games. We lost one,” Borgstrom said. “It’s going to be good to play for it all against another NCHC team. It feels unreal to be here, so excited and don’t really know what to say right now.” Montgomery said his freshman’s influence could be big for the Pioneers. “Anytime you can inject one of the most talented offensive players in college hockey into a lineup that the opposing team hasn’t seen, it’s a benefit,” the coach said. “When you get on the ice (against Borgstrom), it’s a different world, especially for goaltenders.” But Denver is far from a one-dimensional offensive team. The Pioneers generally play four lines equally at even-strength and received two goals from their so-called fourth line Thursday. “Coach has the confidence to put out all four lines and our line just wants to go out there and contribute in whatever way we can,” said 23-year-old sophomore Colin Staub, a Colorado Springs product who assisted on goals by seniors Emig Romig and Evan Ritt against Notre Dame. “And last night we were fortunate enough to be able to get two goals, and it really helped our team get started with Romig’s first goal of the game. And that’s just what we want to provide.” Denver is equally impressive defensively — with junior goalie Tanner Jaillet and talented defensemen led by seniors Will Butcher and Matt VanVoorhis, juniors Adam Plant and Tariq Hammond and sophomore Blake Hillman. “They’ve got some great skill and shiftiness,” Sandelin said of DU’s blue line. “You’ve got to be careful. You can try and play really aggressive in their face, but they support the puck so well and those guys are pretty elusive that you’ve got to certainly play above the puck. Be aggressive when you can be. But just defensively you’ve got to be tight. And you’re going to have to weather some storms. They’re going to play in the offensive zone and they transition well. But in the offensive zone, they possess the puck, they move, they get five men involved in the attack, and obviously they’ve got some great guys to finish around the net.” NCAA Tournament, Frozen Four championship game/comparisons Minnesota Duluth (28-6-7) vs. Denver (32-7-4) Coach: Scott Sandelin (315-283-82, 17th year) … Jim Montgomery (101-47-11, fourth year) Goals/for: 3.37 3.47 Goals/against: 2.24 1.81 Power play: 19.8% 21.5% Penalty kill: 80.9% 84.1% Avg. height / weight: 6-1/196 5-11/182 Last five games: 5-0 4-1 Leading scorers: F Alex Iafallo, Sr. 20-30-50 … F Troy Terry, So. 22-21-43 F Adam Johnson, So. 18-19-37 … F Henrik Borgstrom, Fr. 22-21-43 F Joey Anderson, Fr. 12-24-36 …. 2017 NCAA hockey tournament scores and bracket: Harvard, Minnesota-Duluth advance to Frozen Four
Oh, and Penn State scored ten goals.
We’d had 11 straight years with at least one No. 1 seed knocked out in the first round of the NCAA hockey tournament.
Make that 12.
Thanks to Notre Dame, Minnesota is headed home early. But that wasn’t the only notable game on the docket on Saturday. Half the Frozen Four is set!
Let’s recap.
But first, the bracket:
The Bracket
NCAA.com
Quarterfinals
No. 1 Minnesota-Duluth 3, Boston University 2 (OT)
Naturally, both teams that played into overtime on Friday played into overtime together on Saturday. The legs looked terribly weary on both sides, but it was one heck of a game.
Clayton Keller picked up where he left off on Friday, staking the Terriers to an early 1-0 lead with a goal in the first period. Minnesota-Duluth tied it up in the dying seconds of the frame with a goal from Alex Iafallo.
Joey Anderson assisted on that one, and he struck again with a goal of his own in the third. For a fleeting moment, it seemed Minnesota-Duluth would skate to the Frozen Four easily.
But BU didn’t go down without a fight: Patrick Harper ripped a laser over goalie Hunter Miska’s shoulder to send the game to overtime.
The extra frame didn’t last long, as Adam Johnson potted the game-winner just two minutes in to send the Bulldogs to the Frozen Four.
No. 1 Harvard 3, No. 3 Air Force 2
Like so many teams on Saturday, Harvard spent most of the game just trying to hang on to a dwindling lead.
Their three star forwards struck gold again: Alexander Kerfoot assisted on the opening goal, and Ryan Donato and Tyler Moy both scored in the second period to give Harvard a 3-0 lead. Then the Crimson just had to hold on.
Air Force scored twice before the second period ended: Brady Tomlak and Jordan Himley found the back of the net within about 15 seconds of each other.
But that was all the Falcons could muster, and Harvard advanced to play Minnesota-Duluth in the Frozen Four.
First Round Games
No. 4 Notre Dame 3, No. 1 Minnesota 2
For the better half of the game, the Golden Gophers played like the No. 1 seed they were. Connor Reilly staked Minnesota to a 1-0 lead in the first period, and Vinni Lettieri added another just 30 seconds into the second period to extend the lead.
Notre Dame needed a spark. They got one.
Notre Dame’s Cal Petersen caught Minnesota on a shift change, setting Andrew Oglevie free with an odd-man rush that he capitalized on. Less than a minute later, Anders Bjork tied the game.
Bjork struck again in the third, and that was all she wrote. Notre Dame scored the first big upset of the tournament and a date with UMass Lowell on Sunday.
No. 3 Penn State 10, No. 2 Union 3
So. Not much to recap here.
Though it should be noted: Penn State’s shot totals weren’t ridiculous. They only put 33 shots on net and still scored on ten of them. A remarkable opening tourney game in a remarkable year for the Nittany Lions.
No. 1 Denver 5, No. 4 Michigan Tech 2
The score makes this contest look closer than it actually was.
Tech was chasing the whole game after letting the Pioneers score five unanswered goals in the opening 27 minutes. Colin Staub scored two of those, and Michael Davies dished in two assists.
Two of Denver’s top NHL draftees got into the action as well: Will Butcher (Avalanche) scored and Henrik Borgstrom (Panthers) assested on the fifth goal.
Gavin Gould and Jake Lucchini scored to keep it somewhat close in the second, but Tech never could mount a sustained attack. Denver advances to play Penn State.
No. 2 Massachussetts-Lowell 5, No. 3 Cornell 0
Not much of a contest here. UMass-Lowell controlled play with their patented brand of grinding hockey, capitalizing on their scoring chances where Cornell could not.
Ryan Lohn had two goals in the win and Ryan Collins added two assists. UMass-Lowell plays Notre Dame on Sunday.

2017 VESTRY NOMINEE: COLIN BORGSTROM
01/10/2017
BY SJECWARRENTON
2017 VESTRY NOMINEE: COLIN BORGSTROM
Tumblr media
My name is Colin Borgstrom and I have been a member of the Saint James’ family since 1994.  My wife Debbi and I have four children: Samantha (18), Sabrina (16), Zachary (12), and Nathaniel (10). Our family lives in Warrenton and I work for Oak View National Bank in Marshall.
My wife and I move to Virginia from New Jersey in 1994 and were married in Saint James’ parish that year.  Over the years, I have been a part of numerous ministries: stewardship, food outreach, café, and audit committee, culminating in a term on the Vestry in the 2010-2012.  I have also been the church Treasurer in 2013 and 2014.  My family has been very active is establishing the Food for Friends ministry at SJ and using that platform to interact with several local food outreach organizations in Fauquier County.  I am also co-captain of the SJ summer co-ed softball team and current coordinator of the wood ministry for the church.
I am proud to be a part of Saint James’ community and the work that is being done here.  There is a strong movement of the Holy Spirit throughout our parish and church school that is changing lives.  I have seen this in the outreach done outside of our church walls and on the faces of those community members in need that we have helped by providing basic needs (food, warmth, education).
I would love to see the Saint James’ family continue to push forward into more community-based outreach that would allow each parish member the opportunity to experience the Holy Spirit through the act of giving back of the time, talent, and treasure granted to each of us.  I am ready to serve on the Vestry to help guide and shape Saint James’ for this and other missions yet to come.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve!

FIREWOOD MINISTRY EVENT – SAT OCTOBER 23 – 8 – 10AM
10/14/2021
BY SJECWARRENTON
FIREWOOD MINISTRY EVENT – SAT OCTOBER 23 – 8 – 10AM
Join us Saturday October 23 between 8am and 10am for our next firewood ministry event!  Several local groups and churches will be meeting on this date to continue firewood deliveries to more than 2 dozen families in Fauquier County to prep for cooler weather.  We need your help!
No experience necessary – we have a number of meaningful jobs available for all ages.
Specific needs this weekend include: 1)   Drivers and delivery helpers with trucks and trailers to make deliveries of seasoned firewood to designated households.  Further instructions and directions will be given at the wood collection site. 2)  Crews of 2-3 to split and stack the immense amount of wood rounds at the site to prep them for seasoning for winter – we use the five log splitters onsite and can train you for their use – if you can pull a lever, you can split wood! 3)  Volunteers to stack wood and move logs around the site and complete general clean-up.  This is a great job for kids! 4)  Do you have a chainsaw ?  We have many logs and long pieces of wood that need to be cut into 18-inch pieces for further splitting.
The collection site can be muddy, so wear boots and gloves.
Questions?  Need more info?  Please call SJEC firewood ministry coordinator Colin Borgstrom at 540-270-3285 (cell) or email [email protected] Directions to the collection site:
From the Warrenton Walmart, travel past the Walmart and Home Depot, heading to Brumfield Elementary School on Alwington Blvd.
At the stop sign in front of the school, continue straight (bearing to the left, away from the school)
Follow Alwington Blvd past the school and drive through the farm gate and past the community center – park in the designated parking lot
Trucks for deliveries can follow the dirt road up the hill to the firewood

SJEC FIREWOOD MINISTRY
09/03/2021
BY SJECWARRENTON
SJEC FIREWOOD MINISTRY
SJEC Firewood Ministry
Partnering with several local churches through the Fauquier Community Coalition, we continue to assist with providing over 130 deliveries of firewood to more than two dozen families in Fauquier County.  This ministry is oftentimes the only source of heat for these families and is a wonderful blessing with each delivery.  Our teams combine for a variety of tasks:  splitting and stacking the donated wood for seasoning at the firewood collection site behind Walmart in Warrenton; maintaining the wood collection site through multiple clean-up efforts; and delivering the seasoned firewood during the fall and winter months as requests come in.  There is a job for EVERYONE who comes out to the collection site, whether you are an experienced lumberjack (or jane!) or this is your first time joining us.
Our goals for this Fall and Winter:
We continue to work through the donated wood to prepare for the planned 130 cords of firewood delivered weekly beginning in early September.  We need volunteers to help split and stack wood on Saturday mornings as well as drivers on call to make deliveries on Saturdays and throughout the week.
Mark your calendars – Future wood ministry events – 2nd and 4th Saturdays each month – watch the weekly newsletter and the church’s social media accounts for regular updates!
What we can’t do:
Due to lack of qualified and experienced volunteers as well as proper insurance, we cannot remove trees or wood or take down tree limbs from your property.
Ministry needs:
Do you have a truck or trailer to help us make deliveries? Even an hour a week can help!
Do you have a chainsaw and like to cut stuff up?  We always have large logs that need to be broken down to manageable size and can use your help!
High school students – are you looking for service hours?  We’re happy to sign off for your work – split/stack events are on Saturday mornings for up to 2 hours and are an easy way to gather a few more volunteer hours as your graduation date approaches!
Don’t just think this is “burly guy’s thing” (I don’t even own flannel!)  We can use help in a variety of ways, regardless of age or gender – come out and see for yourself!
Collection site is located at 650 Alwington Blvd, Warrenton, VA 20186 (behind Walmart and Brumfield Elementary School) For more information on this ministry and the needs we serve, please contact Colin Borgstrom at [email protected] or 540-270-3285 (cell).

ST. JAMES’ ADULT COED SOFTBALL- FIRST PRACTICE NIGHT

ST. JAMES’ ADULT COED SOFTBALL- FIRST PRACTICE NIGHT
Like the sequel you didn’t know you needed, St. James’ Adult Coed Softball is back! After taking a year sabbatical (that’s what we’re going to call it), we’re ready to get back outside and play some ball! We had a great first practice night on Wednesday but we’re always looking for players – here’s some softball team general info:
Team is coed and players need to be age 14+.  This is slow-pitch softball; underhand pitch with an arc to the plate.
NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!  Several of us have been coaches before and we’d love to help you learn the game.
We have extra equipment but it is recommended that you invest in a softball glove if you are with us for the long run.  Dick’s Sporting Goods in Gainesville or Rankins in town normally has a variety in stock.  Bring an aluminium bat if you have a favorite or use one of ours.  If you want to be speedy on the base paths, grab a pair of cleats as well (no metal cleats though).
Games are played as 1-hour double-headers, starting at 6:15pm and the second starting as close to 7:15pm as possible.  If you cannot make the first game, come on by and we’ll sub you in on the second.
Everyone plays both on the field and batting – no designated hitters.
We have a strike mat that ‘calls’ balls and strikes – no umpires.
It’s all about having fun and fellowship – many of us adjourn to Foster’s Grille in Warrenton for a post-game wrap up.
We’ve already arranged for some opponents – see the schedule below: Wed, June 30 – Fresta Valley
Wed, July 7 – PATH Foundation Interns
Wed, July 14 – Warrenton Presbyterian Church
Wed, July 21 – Oak View National Bank
Future Games to be Scheduled (other Wednesdays in July and early August)
Taylor Middle School in Warrenton (350 E Shirley Ave, Warrenton, VA 20186) We selected this field as there is a large playground in the far outfield for  young children and adults to play while the game is ongoing. FIREWOOD MINISTRY CANCELLED ON JANUARY 25, 2020BY COLIN BORGSTROM
Cold rain in the forecast does not make for a delightful Saturday morning, so we will not be working at the firewood collection site on Saturday, January 25, 2020.
Mark your calendars for February 8 and 22 from 9-11am for our next split / stack event.
If you are interested in making firewood deliveries during the week and are NOT already getting the delivery request emails from Tom Williams, please let me know and we’ll add you to the distribution list.

FIREWOOD MINISTRY • THANKS & UPDATE • DECEMBER 11, 2019BY COLIN BORGSTROM, SENIOR WARDEN
What a great turnout from our volunteers at the firewood collection lot in Warrenton last Saturday!
There were more than volunteers throughout the morning; thank you to Dana MacKimmie, Rick Miller, Fr. Ben and Elliott Maas, James Wright, Patrick Heijmen, The Kiffney family, and all others I may have missed.
We completed a MAJOR project at the collection site that began back in the spring – see the attached pictures to see just how much firewood we have split and dispersed this year!  The new collection site is about 100 yards farther back on the property (you can just see the piles of wood on the hill in the ‘after’ picture.)
Our work is not done, however.
Tumblr media
With the cold weather surrounding us, we continue to prepare wood on the site and make deliveries in to December.
We will be onsite the next two Saturdays, December 14 and December 21, from 9:00-11:00am.
We will be splitting and stacking wood using the four log splitters onsite and loading trucks for deliveries throughout Fauquier County.
Want to join in to help out our community?  Contact Sr. Warden Colin Borgstrom.
