Reflection 6 - 7 | Saiyuki Blast 8 - 9 | Katsugeki 9 | BnHA 34 | PriPri 8
Reflection 6
How does Spiderman, or X-On, or anyone speak in one of those mouth-covering suits??? I can’t believe I never thought of that sort of question until now.
Why is it always a woman taken hostage??? Can’t you at least be more gender-balanced in this day and age?
Well, considering Lisa’s power is made for, well, power and the other guy’s power is more covert, this wasn’t going to end well…
I find it entertaining, interesting and funny that Lisa called her wheelchair “Big Wheel”.
X-On did the “draw me like one of your French girls” pose on top of the car, and I can’t. I want that meme so badly now!
Always keep your eyes on the road, people. Make sure you get some rest if you’re zoning out!
Reflection 7
“Beef or Fish”? What is this, Macca’s?
This is like Kado all over again, just with two blades on X-On’s part, and fire. Lots of fire.
It’s all men. Gah, Stan Lee. Every time you impress me, you make me go back on my words. At least have a woman in the tech team…
Oh man. Calling yourself “LA’s ambassador” when you live in LA is like me saying I’m Earth’s ambassador when aliens arrive.
Nina doesn’t look very scared…
I-Guy needed an X-On to the face, so to speak.
“Marry.s Hotel” (sic)? Studio Deen need to work on their punctuation.
Wraith is basically Kurogiri (Boku no Hero Academia). I only just realised that…
Uh, what do I call this car? The I-Guy-mobile?
Saiyuki Blast 8
Can I please stop complaining about how the blood splatter is tasteless?
If you’re in the trade of writing bishies, you have to be impeccable at writing ship tease, and Minekura just showed us why she’s been doing this one manga for 20 years.
Normally, when people have hunches in fiction, they tend to be very much correct.
Why does that Sharak follower even wear that hat? What creature is it even made of??? A raccoon?
Is it just me, or do half of these guys (Kougaiji, his lackeys, Genjo and the Sharak follower) look the same?
“…a bunch of humans can really take all of this?” (Alternatively, the word could be “us”, which seems much more likely now that I think of it.)
The staff really skimped on that one scene where the demon horde is leaping…
So this Dokugaku guy (apparently his name is “Dokugakuji”, but the CR sub was spelt wrong) is…Gojyo’s brother? Didn’t see that coming, the entire Sanzo party looks like only children. Goku is of course an only child since he came from the earth though.
CGI rubble really don’t work here…it looks like a bad action movie, like Photoshopped explosions at inopportune times…like this thing someone once showed me.
Hiroaki Hirata is Gojyo, if you didn’t know, and obviously, Sai Rau is Ura Sai backwards (as done by the Japanese).
…oh, you’re asking me why I’m watching this Ura Sai? It’s because I saw some GIFs of it on Tumblr. Apparently it’s a Saiyuki tradition to do an AU at a Macca’s or something?
Saiyuki Blast 9
As I’m still a rookie Saiyuki-wise, I couldn’t really identify this demon by appearance. I completely understand the fruit joke – I read Saiyuki’s character page on Wikipedia, then came to this ep, but I did something in between so I didn’t remember there was the name Zakuro on that list…haha.
Zakuro has some odd perspective working on those fingers of his…
I was reading a volume of Reload, since I have access to a library with 3 volumes of it, and…I actually know what Hakkai is talking about for once before these guys actually bothered to show it. Amazing.
I literally swore when Nataku popped his golden little head into the fray. Kougaiji’s gonna get a beatdown for sure, especially because Sharak’s scripture boundary should be coming into effect soon.
The problem with CGI is that not all anime benefit from being lifelike. Anything by ufotable is fine, but when other studios try to get a slice of that action that’s not fine. I’ve been going for at least 13 years being used to the flat stye of anime, and calling it home. That’s a tiny fraction of how long anime has existed, and already I don’t want it to change. So please, anime. Don’t become too lifelike, lest the viewers not become able to tell truth from fiction.
Kougaiji does look kinda like Gojyo, eh?
Referring to that link in last ep’s simulcast commentary…yeah, this is if Michael Bay directed this show. Only with more blood.
Katsugeki 9
This is the Teradaya Incident, which happens to be completely unrelated to the Ikedaya Incident…
Of course you get the muscleman to row the boat. That’s just logical.
As I’ve said at least once during these commentaries, there’s close quarters combat late into the game (about map 6), where large swords don’t perform as well. That’s why Tonbokiri is worried.
I have the feeling Hijikata will have to be protected later on in the same way…
Those spider blades sure can run fast, eh?
Oh no. This is advice Mutsu previously gave to the other swords, so having it parroted back to him by his master is really something…
Interesting how Tsurumaru is the only one sitting on the ground, even though he’s got white clothing…
BnHA 34
LOL, a catfight. Bad for public image, good for the press.
After that one week break, I feel like I haven’t seen these guys (Denki, Ashido, Tokoyami etc.) in years…
Wow, I didn’t think I’d see Monoma again at all! Guys like that get sidelined a tonne.
What happens if Bakugo and Deku get the same score? That could be a possibility, depending on how the scoring system works out.
The gates are so CGI, I can’t even…
Oh no! It’s Deku vs All Might. It seems absolutely perfect from a logistical angle (as in, matching a physically powerful Quirk against a physically powerful Quirk makes sense, since you probably find it hardest to go against a Quirk like your own), but Deku’s faith is probably gonna get smashed like Texas…it is Texas Smash, right?
For once, a kid that like hamburgers and not Hamburg steak *sighs happily* (one character and one line’s difference in katakana). Something I don’t have to whine about, yay!
I’ve never known a person who likes natto, although for Ashido, it makes sense (like Shouto and cold soba).
Interesting they put the dumbest people up against Nedzu.
Yeah, heroes always need a healer if they can get one. That’s why I specifically introduced one of my characters in Half-Paid Heroes, and I often have a grass type in my lineup to compensate for such things (since in my world, grass types specialise in healing).
Princess Principal 8
(narrowly refrains from making O’Reilly jokes)
Beatrice, how have you not picked up the fact that Dorothy gained a soft spot for the Princess too? This is case 20, for goodness’ sakes.
It’s the Princess and the Pauper, eh? Traditional, but if Barbie ever taught me anything, it’s that people still like hackneyed ol’ stories portrayed by familiar and non-familiar characters.
“There are all kinds of walls, keeping everyone apart.” – That’s anvilicious for you. There’s no tact in this show, is there?

Katsugeki 11 - 12 | Reflection 8 - 9 | Saiyuki Blast 11 | BnHA 36 | PriPri 11
Katsugeki 11
(about Yagen’s comment about former masters) What about Higekiri and Hizamaru, who’ve had so many masters they can’t remember their brothers’ names?
Apparently (reading spoilers, LOL) Tetsunosuke was assigned the voice of Junya Enoki. LOL, I can see why now.
“Embroiled” is probably the wrong word, Izuminokami. (LOL, now I’ve got the habit of calling Kane-san by first name…dangit, Mutsu. You did this to me!)
Geez, these Hijikata swords make saving history such a trainwreck…
Hmph, now that I realise it, I was planning something similar to this plot thread (the one where Kane-san and Horikawa go against each other) for one of my stories. It would be a spoiler to say which one it is, so I’ll keep mum about it.
I only just realised what the cloth was when Horikawa handed it to Kane-san – it’s Kane-san’s cape cloth.
No! Kane-san, I love you! Please don’t wreck Horikawa!
Odoroitaka?! (“Are you surprised?!”, Tsurumaru’s entry line) comes to mind when he mentions surprises.
My streaming service has decided to call Hakodate “Hokodate” (sic). Geez, people. Get stuff right.
Katsugeki 12
I still find it interesting that the swords can’t figure out when a friend is being transmitted or a foe.
Where’s Honebami and Mikazuki? I guess because the limit is six, Saniwa couldn’t use all of them, but still…Honebami is a precious boy.
I find it interesting that Yamanbagiri and co. still hold on to their identity as the first unit as one of power, rather than acknowledging the fact the first and second units are a hybrid now.
Reflection 8
The ending of the last ep was pretty sad, but not enough to evoke tears from me.
There’s some nice symbolic use of colour here.
I still have no idea why Eleanor is so devoted to X-On. Just…why?
Er…secret agent lady? It’s probably too late to make a move when Steel Ruler’s warped the streetlights.
So, to put it bluntly, Eleanor’s just a pawn in people’s games. (clearly sarcastic->) Great.Just what I wanted from a superhero story’s leading lady. (end sarcasm) Can we please get a leading lady with some better proactivity here?
“Notel” (sic). Someone get an editor in here too.
I still have no idea what “beef or fish” is meant to symbolically mean, since I suppose I’m missing some symbolic meaning here. Maybe it’s the fact the 9Nine girls are going to get plonked into the middle of the fray, not knowing who to trust?
Reflection 9
Can we please just hurry up and get the magical girls???
Did the staff just use about 15 – 30 seconds of recycled footage in the middle of the episode??? That’s just terrible, y’know?
Uh, bashing through the ceiling is one way to get there, Vy…I guess…?
Yikes, when X-On moved his head while being held by Big Wheel, it really showed how Deen was skimping on the animation in this show.
No wonder Eleanor is gasping, she’s facing Stan Lee!
Saiyuki Blast 11
The shaky camera really puts me off.
It’s interesting how CR sometimes only applies titles to episodes after they’re done waiting for the one week between paid and free to elapse. This ep’s called “Raid”, if you can’t see it.
Is it just me, or is Hakkai’s linework thicker, like Detective Conan in more recent days?
I guess the one with the most sense here is Hakuryuu, eh? LOL. Update: Dangit, Goku. You stole my line.
Why isn’t Goku-oh wait. The Seiten Taisei isn’t meant to be human or demon, that’s why.
That was a really pretty UraSai title, even if only because of the sakura.
I-I’m vaguely disturbed by how those guys (the rest of the Sanzo Ikkou) tried to eat Gojyo…
BnHA 36
Hmph. I was talking with some Boueibu-fan friends on Skype and apparently I’m pretty snarky…? Oh well, these are spur of the moment notes. (Seriously though, I should raid these notes for analysis “ammunition” more.)
Aw, it was so disappointing to learn the other students can’t hear what the examinees are talking about. That Deku/Uraraka moment would’ve been sweet.
(at Nedzu’s smashing) Oh, I get it. Kinda like a Rube Goldberg machine, with chain reaction effects and stuff. The Butterfly Effect, I believe its name is.
Oh hey. Nedzu experimentation, eh? Sounds like a bunch of characters I’ve written, but which ones have been experimented on are spoilers.
This is going to be interesting. I’ve never really seen much about Kouda, but he must be in class A for a reason. I know what his Quirk is due to the wiki, but…well, surprises are surprises.
According to the kanji that popped up on the screen, the pun is on the word mori (forest). I didn’t have the volume on so I don’t know what it is, but the English pun was actually a really good match! (It’s a specialised meaning of the word “arbour”, but it’s still one that works.)
“Aoyama likes himself.” – LOL, that boy is way too narcisstic. But by the by, 168 cm is kinda short, isn’t it? It should be short compared to Mezo Shouji, at least.
(when Mineta is cornered) Ah, now you can really see why Midnight is the R-Rated Hero…
“…save the boobs for another day.” - What the heck, Mineta. You actually made me laugh at your perviness.
When the Midoriya and Bakugo story comes to the fore, it reminds me why I write the underdog stories I do – One Wish and Future is Crimson are both based on the same story, of giving the hero something that they never previously got and showing them what they could do with it. Yeah, Midoriya! Fight, fight, fight!
Princess Principal 11
I have a feeling that Ange will pretend to be the princess and stage an assassination. After all, she actually is the princess.
Scott mentioned this exact sort of trope not too long ago – that trope where you break up the band, only to bring it back together again. I never realised how pervasive in media it was until this ep…
I just realised Gazelle’s contact is wearing an army cross of some variety. Probably something similar to a Victoria Cross.

PriPri 4 - 6 | Saiyuki Reload Blast 6 | BnHA 32 | Katsugeki 7 | Reflection 4
BnHA 31, Saiyuki Reload Blast 5, Katsugeki 6 and Reflection 3 were lost because, long story short, the internet connection decided to waver while I was trying to post them. *bows* I’m sorry but I don’t know how to resurrect the lost words (I save my notes doc as a blank doc once I’ve got 5 eps’ worth lined up). I’d written 2 pages’ worth of notes for those 4 and PriPri 4 (which I managed to resurrect, but it’s kinda paltry)…
Princess Principal 4
Onomancy.
Team Wildcat? Please, don’t make this High School Musical…
“Squelch” is such an odd word choice for a world war…
Hey, it’s the “birds” book again.
Princess Principal 5
All aboard the Hogwarts Express!
It’s interesting to note how the British act towards the Japanese. I haven’t really seen these sorts of reactions myself because of where I live and who I am, but…yeah, it’s completely natural for a place that isn’t used to Japanese courtesy.
The more I see of Chise’s backstory, the more I’m tempted to play relevant segments of History of Japan as I go. Unfortunately, not much of it is relevant aside from “How ‘bout I do anyway?” and “Hire a samuraiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii~”. By the by, Chise kinda reminds me of Rio from Parable of the Renegades. I have the honour of fighting against such a solid work, but I won’t let my pride go, because Nephalem is an even tougher opponent.
“I like pickles”…? (Wut?)
“My name is Chise. You killed my father. Prepare to die!” Okay, I swear that’s the second time I’ve had to make that reference in this commentary. Someone, please show these directors the Princess Bride (even though I’ve never seen it myself). By the by, I half expect Jubei to be her father.
Ange runs…very weirdly. Let me put it that way.
They had enough time to change clothes…? Welp, that’s not very convincing in regards to suspension of disbelief.
I’d say the thing that protected Beatrice was her mouthpiece.
Ah-hah! Saw it coming!
Why is Beatrice always so opposed to everything???
Princess Principal 6
I didn’t hear the song because I had the volume off…
Nevermore!
Uva and Keemun teas.
I bet Dorothy’s dad will get murdered by the Duke of Normandy…
Well…he didn’t get killed by the Duke, which is what I didn’t expect, but where did the woman get the blade???
The song is called “Moonlight Melody” (all lowercase).
Saiyuki 6
Was that an eye? On a sword? In the OP???
Who’s Goujun???
Reincarnation is a cruel fate. A sheltered man of Heaven becomes the battle-hardened Sanzo…hmph. It reminds me of Ro.Te.O, which is probably why this thing is so great to me.
I love how Kenren just goes “or something”, LOL.
Oh, Goujun is the Dragon King. No wonder. However, why is the Dragon King not a dragon? He has scales, but he’s basically a demon, right?
Interesting how Tenpou is so used to battle he’s just thinking about mundane things while he’s slaughtering people. I should do that in one of my own stories one day.
My heart absolutely fell into my throat when the narration went “something is happening”…yikes.
BnHA 32
LOL, poor Bakugo. Scaring those kids.
I think Gunhead just explained an aikido move, although I’m not sure since I don’t do martial arts…
Death Arms makes a good replacement policeman, doesn’t he?
Uh, hey. Sirius, ain’t all jobs like that? Not just heroing, but even non-intensive jobs like the ones I’m aiming for contain some misconceptions and discrepancy between reality and the belief things will be easy and fun all the time.
Being a hero, for different people, holds different reasoning. I think that’s already clear to Deku, Bakugo and their main crew, but I guess that’s not so prevalent for Froppy, eh?
Selkie has the word “seal” on his back! Ah! I get it! A navy SEAL! (Hahaha…)
Nysan? Y’sure it ain’t Nissan, LOL?
The “…this area!” went a little too fast…
Well, Froppy is one thing, but “does anything a spotted seal can” is spinning Spiderman’s shtick a bit far…if you reuse a joke, it’s not funny anymore, y’get me?
This Froppy fan pandering is…less entertaining than I thought it could be. It’s just “stay back, you’re just a kid” business that kids don’t like, don’t you think?
O-Okay, I take my last comment back. Innsmouth completely got me by surprise! Gosh, he’s like a Lovecraft monster!
T-That time the cuteness actually worked! Amazing! It became so corny, it came back into funny territory!
Well, that was surprising…it actually managed to entertain much more than I thought it would…
Katsugeki 7
Higekiri and Hizamaru are basically VEPPer…? (Badass versions???)
I never knew of a sword who used his bare hands in combat…until now…Yipes.
Yay! Go, Yamanbagiri! Kick that ootachi’s-wait, it’s over already?
I feel sorry for poor inferior-feelin’ Yamanbagiri. It sets my dude-moe radar off (which is a good thing – I wanna cuddle this poor guy).
As I’ve said in the past (although this may have been just in m planning documents for writing stories), the perspective changes the means.
Oh wait, Yamanbagiri is a starter! This Saniwa must’ve started with Yamanbagiri!
Oodenta manages to really capture the mood of horror movies. He’s such an emo, but heck is he frightening when it comes to thunder. Like Martin of Ro.Te.O.
Reflection 4
In Concrete Revolutio, I was fine with a new time jump every 2 minutes. Here, I’m just expecting one every two minutes…
Does anyone else get the vibe that Eleanor’s just there to be in trouble? She’s a reporter, after all…
(while I-Guy flies) Sky Show!...or something like that.
“La La Lan” (sic)? It’s a building seen in one shot.
Wait, what just happened? I-Guy basically held on to the dude as he made his coloured clouds and then took him into the sea in a really, really bland fashion. I might need to summon Nana Maru San Batsu back soon, it seems.
Yay! Magical girls, magical girls! Come at me with all you’ve got, Stan Lee magical girls! It’s not like you’ll be better than MMM anyway.
LOL, you always hear the name “Trevor Horn” in relation to this anime. It’s kinda weird actually, since normally composers don’t get that much of a spotlight in anime.
If they can snag Stan Lee to voice Stan Lee, certainly Trevor Horn can voice Trevor Horn, right?
Trevor kinda looks like the Buggles on Instagram, and that’s speaking from minimal experience as to what Video Killed the Radio Star is…
I see. The powers are attached to Ian’s voice, so of course he would no longer be able to sing his signature song for multiple reasons.
Lisa sure knows her Spiderman, doesn’t she? (About spandex and everything.)
Now they have slurs for Reflected too? I should’ve known – if there’s opposition to something, naturally slurs will arise. That’s the human condition.

Princess Principal 3 | Saiyuki Reload Blast 4 | Boku no Hero Academia 30 | Katsugeki 5 | Reflection 2
I’ve been kinda busy lately and there’s been minimal Boueibu news as we gear up for the OVA, but the “Chesarka watches ________” tags are now on this post and should be rolled out to other posts.
Princess Principal 3
Gah? Is this a yuri? Or is it just two girls talking as spies?
I thought we didn’t need this commentary. We had it in ep 1.
Nuwara Eliya appears to be a Sri Lankan tea type.
Okay, there’s a dude dressed like a sailor but wearing goggles. What is this, a flying fishmobile??? (reference to Galilei Donna, which I’ve never seen but I’ve heard of the fish airship)
I’m…not sure what Kalinga tea is. It could be some made-up name for a tea brand or something.
I bet Beatrice’s mechanism will save her…Nope, turns out I was wrong…
Saiyuki 4
The OP blood splatter effect is still fairly tasteless…
The “salmon” joke does kind of work in both English and Japanese, as “salmon” in Japanese is sake.
I think the kon bit of Konzen’s name has something to do with gold, or else his hair colour is an aesthetic choice by Minekura. (Oh? You’re asking me why I know Kazuya Minekura’s name? Well, for one, it’s in the OP, and the second thing is I found an old manga magazine preserved online that talked about her (Animefringe), dated about 2004 at last issue. That’s why it’s interesting to take on Saiyuki Reload Blast from a rookie perspective.)
Well, at least now we understand why Goku can deal with Gojyo and Genzo so much.
I’m not sure if Nataku has been mentioned previously in this series, but hey. Diamond head is probably him.
Well, I guessed right. It really was Nataku.
Can’t throw around the name Son Goku (Sun Wukong) lightly now, kiddo. Saiyuki is based off Journey to the West, and of course Son Goku is the monkey king in that. I’m not completely up to scratch on my Journey to the West mythology though, so here…a link which should detail Goku’s history roughly as it should be. *sighs exasperatedly* I thought I was done with my Chinese studies…
Is it just me, or is this pan starting and stopping?
I’m always one for the bishie fests with a small teasing of yaoi, but no real yaoi. Of course, Saiyuki is perfect for me, ain’t it?
“I’m rowdy down there too.” – Hehehe, LOL.
Otayori? The word these days is tegami, or otegami if you want to be polite, so otayori must be an old term.
…yeah, I don’t get the Urasai.
Boku no Hero Academia 30
Ah, having to live up to expectations. Now there’s something I know well.
Interesting to note Iida’s now taken on a more Midoriya approach to things, including and up to “throwing away his arm”.
Hey wait, the Iida/Stain eyecatch combo happened last ep too. Dangit, recycling.
Shouto’s outfit looks a lot like Endeavour’s. maybe someday I should analyse how Shouto’s becoming more comfortable with being in his father’s shadow…but I guess someone’s already done it, eh?
I guess I should say Endeavour’s blue flame was a type of “boom, headshot!” thing, but…yeah, it doesn’t quite qualify.
Deku talking to Native is just so adorable! It completely sets off my version of the moe radar!
“…if he gets too high…”
So…wow. The hero killer gets done in by his own bones. That’s kinda anticlimactic…
Katsugeki 5
Nobunaga no Shinobi said oodachis can be about 2 metres long…eesh. I’d hate to be on the end of an enemy oodachi…
Ufotable’s visuals look really lifelike, it’s crazy…
Oh…my gosh. Tonbokiri!
Okay, okay. Seriously, are there any Mutsu/Kane-san shippers out there? I thought Horikawa/Kane-san shippers were more common.
Eyyyyyyy! It’s Jiji (Mikazuki)! Jiji’s any Touken Ranbu player’s dream sword, in regards to sword rarity. Dangit, Saniwa, you’re making me jealous.
I’m so worried for Tonbokiri…
Reflection 2
Well, they do call New York “the city that never sleeps”…
Masda (sic) is on one of the boards...chyrons…oh whatever. I don’t really know what to call the electronic screens, aside from that very name.
That cop looks kinda sleepy…(sarcastic->) not.
Okay, if I got this straight…Stan Lee is a psychic bad guy! Hahaha, that’s great!
Uh, hey. This guy with the power of Itsuka Kendou (BnHA)? Isn’t he basically a racist stereotype, if not a cliche? Stan Lee, what are you doing to my anime?
Stan Lee does kabedons. Never thought I’d see the day where that happened.
Here’s Spider-X-on again, LOL. Spider-dude, spider-dude, does whatever a spider-dude can…haha.
I think I saw I-Guy pass a Hard Rock Café as he flew. Stan Lee, please stop infringing on other people’s copyrights.
O-Oh, I never thought this, but if you can get air sickness from planes, why can’t you get it from mechanised suits too? I guess that’s what Stan Lee wants us to think.
So basically Tiger and Bunny: Stan Lee version? Hmph. I’ve read 6 volumes of the T & B manga, so I know most of the drift, but actually getting to see even a cheap version of it feels great.
Ah, I didn’t think they’d control the screens from LA. No wonder I-Guy had the perfect backgrounds.
Seriously, Ian? What’s your power???
Of course the Reflected become criminals. If you had a power you didn’t understand and people didn’t understand you, you’d turn evil too.
I never saw what was so good about tomato juice. Then again, I dislike tomatoes for absolutely no reason at all, so…yeah.
Seriously, what was so good about that little old blob, Eleanor? The footage was taken too far to discern whether that was Wraith or not.

Grimoire of Zero 10 - 11 | Royal Tutor 11 - 12 (FINAL) | Kado 10 | Boku no Hero Academia 25 | Tsukigakirei 10 - 11...plus summer 2017 anticipated anime.
Just gonna put this here so it gets more attention while it’s open.-> http://www.strawpoll.me/13311671
Grimoire of Zero 10
Geez, the staff pulled a Kado 0 - 1 on us here…i.e. the ending of one ep is the same as the opening of the next ep. It’s just to a lesser extent than Kado did.
Seriously, who is Him??? They still haven’t told us!
Welp, there’s my answer. It was too obvious to centre a 12 episode series around, I would’ve given a plot point like that about…3 or 4 eps, tops.
Grimoire of Zero 11
The thing about this show is that you can just turn your brain off and watch along. It’s a tad slow, but enjoyable and that’s why I’ve stuck with it.
LOL, I understand what it’s like to have “messy, wormlike handwriting”…
I don’t believe a wisp of that karate chop, Holdem. The hand was at the wrong angle.
Finally, the show gets funny again. There’s the Zero we know.
I love the sense of scale the animators have demonstrated with the spells. Just saying that before I have no more chances to.
Ooh! Oh, that man. I actually side with Holdem on this one, he deserved that punch.
“I-“ – Ooh, at that moment I got completely engrossed in the cliffhanger. Normally shows don’t cut off in the middle of a sentence, do they?
Royal Tutor 11
I can’t believe they forcibly took Gregor. Isn’t there some kind of legal offence for-oh wait. That’s called kidnapping. (partially sarcastic)
I’ve always found it interesting that the princes have to refer to the king as such, rather than “dad”. That seems to be a problem in every single piece of media you get about royalty, although these guys have a conscious sort of “I am no longer the king, but your father” (and vice versa) switch which is controlled by Viktor.
Oh, so it’s basically all the Dickensian stuff you get in Oliver Twist…(I haven’t read it, but you know how it is with classics *rolls eyes*).
Heine’s movements are believable, but there’s some suspension of belief needed for Viktor’s (because he faints a little too fast, I think).
Welp, this ain’t quite crying material, but I can tell there was a “climax” where the audience was expected to cry. Knowing this is anime-only material keeps my eyes dry, I guess. However, knowing that Heine’s resigned as Royal Tutor really made my heart drop…after all, this is the second last episode, and I’ve really had fun watching these princes and their diminuitive tutor.
Royal Tutor 12
Bruno really likes Gendo poses, doesn’t he?
Heine’s voice is great for a noob VA. It really sells the character.
I always thought “hai-neh” was a weird pronunciation, but that’s what it says in the katakana.
Seeing Heine tell others their strengths really makes me feel like I’m missing them already, in a good way. I’m not tearing up yet, but it’s real heartwarming and I know if I were in the same situation, I’d cry too.
“Goodbye” isn’t quite “excuse me”, but I guess it works context-wise.
This is one of those shows where “show, don’t tell” works well and I think the show’s nailed it for the most part.
University degrees don’t necessrily make good tutors. Any student knows that, especially in uni.
I can see why even the author cried at this now, even though I’m still not crying.
W-Who’s that? With the dark hair? Eins???
Ah, there’s my answer. It was indeed Eins. Why does he have dark hair???
Welp, there’s one finale for the spring season over. The anime staff really couldn’t have done too much about Eins, though, which sucks. Come back another time for a different show, ‘kay?
Kado 10
I’m in that weird stage where I want to like Kado, but because everyone’s jumped ship, I won’t want to like it either…what a weird thing peer pressure is. *feels like crying*
I feel like I’m in Superhero Project (one of my stories) where protag Keisuke wakes up in a white expansive room to be trained in his powers. Only this time, they gave the room fractals.
Interesting. It’s like an alien LINE convo.
Sarasouju tree…apparently, it’s this thing. Commonly known as “sal”. I’ve never heard of it, though.
“Humans are ephermeal creatures.” – You remind me of Haibara (Detective Conan).
“There’re guns everywhere in America!” – LOL, that sure ain’t the truth, as much as America has gun problems.
Let’s play another common anime game. It’s called “Spot the Main Character from their Hair Colour”.
(SPOILERS for White Parasite from now on!) zaShunina’s still teetering on “cuckoo” from his facial expressions here. It’s sad, because I wanted him to be mysterious and beautiful like La Luna forever...that’s why I killed La Luna off!
*sigh* Okay, evil mastermind pretender, put your hands back on and please just negotiate like you wanted to in the beginning. (*on the brink of tears* Hey, I realised something. I keep making comparisons to White Parasite, but people find it confusing. By making those comparisons, I seem to have almost jinxed Kado to be this way.)
*crying because Shindo* La Luna’s force of living was the goodwill that it used to create its powers. Does that mean the anisotropic run off trust in the same way? (By the way, please don’t resurrect Shindo. That would break the laws of reality as we know it – even anisotropic laws.) (end spoilers)
Welp, I guess not. B-But, my dreams just got ruined by Saraka kissing Shindo (although the Kado tag spoilered it for me anyway)…
Pffffft. Okkkkkkay, Captain Shang, hold up!
Shindo’s angry face at Saraka wearing his shirt had me dying. He really is Captain Shang.
Kado. You were so beautiful at first. I placed my faith in you. B-But you changed, and now all I can do is see you through as you become a cliché fest I could have easily created with my own hands. In fact, I did create a Kado with my own hands - White Parasite. So I am the one to blame…I will have to see this through as I have seen through White Parasite.
Boku no Hero Academia 25
Well, that certainly threw me for a loop. Between two forces of roughly even power, it’s unpredictable who’ll win, but the ability to humanise a character comes with weaknesses. I know that already, as a writer and reader of hero stories.
All Might is such a fatherly type. I don’t think I could write a character like him – both OP yet grounded at the same time.
Plus Ultra!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wait, the woman with red streaks is his…aunty? Sister? I’m not sure at all.
Aw, this Shouto segment was just too good. I’m worried about Iida though, because from the Stain stuff I’ve seen floating around, he will not take the defeat of his bro lightly. Also, amazarashi is coming in the next part of BnHA! I loved Speed to Masatsu, so it’s good to meet him again here.
Tsukigakirei 10
“An Encouragement of Learning” is a Fukuzawa work.
From Kawagoe to Chiba it really is about 2 hrs. Look.
Oh great. Bad CGI people strike again…
Monzenyokocho.
Did Hira have kawaii eyes just as the other people thrust trash at him?
Imokoi is a Kawagoe specialty involving…wait for it…sweet potatoes. That’s why the sweet potato mascot makes sense.
My eyes!!!!!!!! Bad CGI people stand out more in night scenes (compared to day scenes, of course).
Toki no Kane, apparently also known as the Bell of Time.
The “game” in question, that rock paper scissors, was probably a batsu (penalty) game.
I guess I should’ve guessed Kotarou would’ve gotten angry at Hira eventually. I just didn’t think it would be now.
That shot of Kotarou walking down the street looked a little awkward because it looked like he was walking on a flat surface when it’s actually slanted.
It’s not just my video, is it? Akane’s crying got sped up and that pulled me out of what was meant to be an immersive scene.
Chotto matte means “wait a bit”, but I feel like “I’ll be right there” is warping the meaning a lil’ too much.
Well, I never expected this show to portray anger. It pulled Kotarou’s anger off really well.
I never thought I’d see the day where Kotarou would rely on the potato mascot, either. I like a show that goes out of its way to be unpredictable like this. Too bad it came a little too late in the game.
Tsukigakirei is all about following the heart and not necessarily the mind, so this is a pefect way to show it.
Oh! That was another good unexpected thing, but then they’ve been teasing that since the fireworks. Too bad they kept part of Kotarou’s face hidden right after it.
This end of ep LINE convo is about a couple that can’t sleep, so one of them starts talking about their part time job…then it gets cut off.
Oh, so that’s how Sakura is related to the main events…okay.
Tsukigakirei 11
“To decide that I’m hopeless before I even begin is nothing but laziness.” - Wise words, Dazai.
Were there always two potato mascots at the top of 13.70? I think one appeared there when Kotarou first received his, actually, although I’m not bothered to look…
The people aren’t CGI now…or I’ve somehow gotten used to them…? Either way, they’ve stepped up their animation game (in exchange for ep 12 being late, according to a note on the CR page).
That’s a cute jumper, Akane.
The fact Kotarou changes his message is something I can relate with. Even one forum post can take hours to type, even though time is always never on my side.
What’s that purple thing on the onigiri plate? A pickled plum? No, those are red…
A “root for the underdog” story is a classic, so I can see why Roman’s rooting for Kotarou.
Hahaha…yeah, let’s just sat I can’t understand the science for the life of me and leave it at that. That stuff’s chemistry, I haven’t touched it since I was 14 or 15.
The stuff about circles appears to be on segments, equal angles and so on (you know how you find the angle of a triangle based on where it is in a circle? Yeah, stuff like that).
Oh yeah, I never thought this but…Kawagoe Seminar. It’s named like Sailor Moon’s Crystal Seminar, and for good reason – both are cram schools.
There’s a grade score near Kotarou’s wrist, so understandably he got an A in Japanese.
Parents aren’t like that, Kotarou. They don’t always hope for your failure, they just hope you’ll do well in life…says someone whose parents have aways supported them.
Instead of having CGI people moving, they’ve finally done 2D people. However, the tradeoff is that now the people are not moving, which is just as weird if not even weirder.
“PoPo” is such a weird name for a shop, LOL.
No wait, I take part of my comment about 2D people back. There is still CGI, it’s just less prononced now they’ve bothered to put in 2D background people as well.
That scarf goes well with his outfit…says someone who sucks at coordinating outfits.
Why not just talk with her when you’re ready, Kotarou? If The Royal Tutor taught me anything, it’s that it’s always good to talk things over if you can’t understand each other.
Aitai can mean “want to meet”(like you’re meant to do to make the fish a heart), but the ai is in hiragana (so it doesn’t mean anything) and the kanji for tai used means “red snapper”. As in, the fish.
There’s a lot of ganbaru (try your hardest) used in this ep, and Kotarou says benkyouganbaresou in this “Sorry it didn’t turn out so great” convo. The nuance is therefore lost in the translated version, “I feel like I’m ready to study again starting tomorrow”, although I can’t suggest a better alternative.
Yeah, Kotarou’s mother is right. If you have a normal sleep schedule, you’re able to work better, despite how great it may be to sleep in.
I get easily lost on public transport, so I understand the vibe Kotarou’s parents are giving off.
This ep’s ED LINE convo is two people (one’s a guy, the other I don’t know the gender of) talking about studying and, at the start of the convo, the guy’s mother being angry. At the end of the convo it turns out the guy’s notebook was blank (and that’s the punchline to the convo).
Well, I’ll confirm my lineup for summer here and now. Licensing’s already being doled out as we speak so some of the lineup’s set in stone already. In order of hype:
Definite hype:
Boku no Hero Academia 2* (carryover)
Katsugeki Touken Ranbu*
Reflection*
Nana Maru San Batsu
Kaito x Ansa (already binged Nazotokine to prepare)
Nobunaga no Shinobi ~ Ise to Kanegasaki-hen ~* (see below, carryover)
Medium - low hype:
Vatican Kiseki Chousakan
Princess Principal
Jikan no Shihaisha (seen the first chapter or so of the manga)
Isekai Shokudou*
18if
Youkai Apato
Clione no Akari
Konbini Kareshi
Zannen Onna
Asterisks mean licensing’s been confirmed already for me as of this post - I’ve asterisked anything confirmed to be by CR this season, because that’s likely to be worldwide bar Asia. Katsugeki is the only known show out of the asterisks that isn’t a CR stream.
Funi’s opened up its services to my region (due to the CR x Funi merger), I could probably watch 18if there, but 1) I feel like Funi doesn’t have a good enough player, and 2) I feel like it’ll show up on a service that has a better player.
You’ll notice Nobunaga no Shinobi, a carryover from the last season I previously didn’t care for, is on the list. I was looking at YouTube videos of people’s favourite OPs and I fell in love with Shirayuki (by Renka, it’s the OP for the current season) recently, so I binged the existing content in one day. However, it being a short series means it’s not eligible for simulcast commentary and I’ll have to make a separate ranking for short series once I make my year-end rankings (to include ~ Ise to Kanegasaki-hen ~, and because watching Kenka Bancho Otome has screwed my rankings over enough as it is). After all, my 2016 ranking policy was “a show I saw at least once over in 2016 and had at least one seasonal entry in 2016″, which if applied to this year would make Nobunaga no Shinobi eligible, but it would be unfair to pit it against any shows with standard 24 min eps.

Saiyuki Blast 12 (FINAL) | PriPri 12 (FINAL) | Katsugeki 13 (FINAL) | Reflection 10 | BnHA 37
Well, it’s already almost time for another season! The simulcast commentary will most likely start off with Idolmaster Side M episode 0, on that front.
Plus, there was a Nanbaka special that got put on CR, but heck, I ain’t gonna cover Nanbaka here anymore.
Saiyuki 12 (FINAL)
“How the hell does he store all that energy into his tiny body?”
The rainbow shaking effect really isn’t doing it for me. Probably because I don’t have the audio going at the same time.
Eijin? Who’s Eijin again? Update: Apparently he’s a Kouten dude who died a few eps back but I don’t quite remember him.
That UraSai was strangely more entertaining than it should have been…
Well, that was a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Gimme more Saiyuki!
Princess Principal 12 (FINAL)
Princess Principal is all about disappearances, come to think of it…
Plenipotentiary. Man, that’s a long word! I had to be careful to spell it right as I typed, and knowing that I often spell things right withour thinking…that means something.
I think Dorothy just became my best PriPri girl, although when ANN had their poll for summer’s best girl I voted for Ange, haha.
PriPri was much better than its loli appearance made it seem, wasn’t it?
Katsugeki 13 (FINAL)
It was so obvious they used CGI people during that one Shinsengumi fight (the one just before Kane-san says, “The Shinsengumi’s final battle.”).
…Okay, if I keep complaining about CGI ignore me…
Please, Horikawa. Just take off the Shinsengumi jacket and we’ll call it even, okay? Stop wrecking Kane-san’s mission. You’ve already warped history too much. Besides, the staff didn’t really explain there was a 3 year gap somewhere in the middle of ep 11 and 12, did they?
(at the final Shinsengumi battle scene) CGI! It just won’t stop coming!
Oh alright…it’s over. I wasn’t as satisfied as I thought I would be with this show…
Reflection 10
No need to panic, no need to worry. What’s next? No need to have dinner? (Sorry, I have a headache for some reason unrelated to The Reflection, so if you find me really snarky below, that’s why.)
Rule #1234 of stupidity: If it’s a trap, it’s a friggin’ trap. That’s all there is to it.
Oh, it’s Phasing Man. Never thought I’d see him again…
Uh, hey. Stan Lee? Hiroshi Nagahama? You never mentioned an older brother until now. At least do us audience members something decent and foreshadow what will happen, okay?
So…this is Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle: Eleanor version? I guess so. It’s just as confusing. (TRC SPOILER for those who don’t get my reference: it’s part of Fai’s backstory too.)
10 episodes in and we still have no magical girls…ugh. At least Wraith turns out to be a semi-hot dude.
BnHA 37
Whoa! All Might got his acting game on! Fantastic!
Hey, didn’t Midoriya use a judo throw on Kacchan in the first season? It would make sense for All Might to do the same then.
Well, he ain’t called Katsuki Bakugou for nuthin’, Midoriya. (“Katsu” means “to win” in Bakugou’s case.) Of course he wants to win.
“…cobbled-together power.” Sounds like One for All, alright.

Katsugeki 10 | Saiyuki Blast 10 | Princess Principal 9 - 10 | BnHA 35
The season’s winding down soon…aside from The Reflection of course. I’m lazy and typed up a heck of a lot for AniList (as I tend to do, but I normally don’t share it here), so here’s my seasonal predictions for the fall so I can get that out of the way.
Katsugeki 10
I think the problem with this show and Princess Principal is that they’re a little too anvilicious with their foreshadowing (Katsugeki) and morals (both). They do it fairly often, too, like it’s the only thing they can muster. C’mon, staff. You can do better than that!
As I’ve said during SGRS, earpicking is seen as a sign of affection in Japanese culture.
Ah, my poor Kane-san! Why must the Retrograde Army be so cruel to him???
Kane-san, don’t make Horikawa cry too…
I’ve half a mind to see Kunihiro become a witch, a la Madoka Magica.
Saiyuki Blast 10
What’s a Sanbutsushin? Update: Sanbutsushin refers to the three heads in the waterfall.
If you’ve noticed Touken Ranbu and Saiyuki both have a very high entry barrier, then…yeah, you’re right. I have the uncanny ability to understand pretty much anything, given enough time and reason to want to know it better.
“…worshipping her as a living goddess in this area.”
I never thought Hakkai would say, “Y’all are fired,” but that’s probably something someone thought funny…*looks at subbers suspiciously*
Princess Principal 9
Nukazuke.
LOL, I’d never think of girls playing cricket in steampunk London…
I remember Dorothy being implied as leader in the bird book episode (since she was the one to receive the instructions of that case), but to see it being said outright is interesting. Timeline-wise, this sort of thing happens a lot earlier in the game, so the anachronistic nature of the show is finally showing its benefits.
Oh yeah. I forgot Ange has that bumpkin alias of hers. When does she drop it, timeline-wise?
Lily is basically Regina George all over again…*sighs*
Kintsuba.
I wonder if “dear sister” refers to her fellow spies, or an actual sister she respects highly…? Update: It refers to an actual sister.
Wogdon actually summons some results!
Dohyo iri. It’s a sumo thing.
Well, it’s been a while since I googled so many things, and for that, I commend this episode.
Princess Principal 10
A shishi odoshi is that bamboo thing that goes “doink” in Japanese gardens.
Oh…oh wow. That was one of the better eps in this show, along with the Dorothy’s backstory ep and the giant twist between Ange and Charlotte. Poor Prefect.
BnHA 35
There’s one shot in the OP where All Might lands in front of Midoriya. Oh! I get it now!
That “team play with a specific sidekick” thing almost seems like a Sirius/Selkie throwback, it was probably intentional on the anime staff’s part if not Horikoshi’s.
Wait, why karaoke?
Is Tsuyu going to barf up her stomach? No wonder she says it’s gross…
Oh, it’s the handcuffs! Nice deception, anime people. Or Horikoshi.
Who the heck is Power Loader? I think he’s a mole sort of guy, but I’m not sure.
Fusion, my butt. LOL.
Oh, so that’s who Power Loader is! He’s been around since the beginning.
I like the idea of the Nedzu gate.
I wonder why Tokoyami would like apples?
Couldn’t Todoroki freeze the ground so he has a platform to slip off of while avoiding the caltrops? Or is that bad because of his boots?
Boob shot? In my anime? Please stop.
Aw, this is cute. I saw on CR that people ship Momo x Shouto because of this, and I can see why, it’s basically canon, LOL…come to think of it, couples start to form around when you’re 15, right? Tsukigakirei at least told me that, and I kinda experienced it myself…hmph. Those were the days.
LOL, please don’t look at Momo right when she’s forming that material, Todoroki.
Aw, Momo’s such a sweetie. I wanna hug her.
Oh, the comments say there’s an after credits scene, huh? Okay then.
Oh, I’ve seen that screenshot before, Aoyama. LOL.

Saiyuki Blast 7 | BnHA 33 | Katsugeki 8 | PriPri 7 | Reflection 5
Saiyuki 7
Well, back to the “kick demon butt” thing. It was fun to see Nataku and the past Sanzo party while it lasted…
I had the volume on there, and it was cool to hear Goku say “sankyu”.
This Kouten thing reminds me of Avatar (Last Airbender, you nitwits).
“…in each village…”
Schmuck bait, I say. Demons just wanna get into that scripture area, and they will.
Biotech? That’s unexpected from a story full of demons.
Get in, motherf***ers! We’re going demonslaying!...er, says Sharak Sanzo…
Oh my Sanzo priests. That movie…exists! It’s by Toei, to boot.
The fire looks real. Who made it like that? Ufotable?
Gen-tan and Gen-pyon are very cutesy nicknames, LOL.
Hey. Is it that Minekura actually ships this Kouten dude and Sharak? You wanna stick romance into Saiyuki right now? (I thought part of the appeal in this series was the yaoi shiptease. That’s normally what happens in my territory.)
I just realised it’s the VAs that do the lettering of the Ura Sai title…hmph. Interesting. (Why didn’t I notice that earlier? I don’t know myself.)
BnHA 33
After this ep, I’m up to date. Thanks a lot, one week break!
Wait, Stain wasn’t serious? Or the Full Cowl wasn’t serious?
I bet Deku wants an autograph. (Not taiyaki, LOL.)
You can see Tensei in Iida’s glasses reflection in the OP. I didn’t realise until now.
Well, I for one can’t wait for Bakugo to get an ass-whupping for the sake of modesty…haha. I’m sorry Bakugo, but you’re such a jerk.
Why does Sero like oranges? Or is that mikan? I wasn’t paying attention to that bit, due to the background speed lines.
Ouch! I normally don’t sympathise with Mineta, but here we are. DIdn’t see Jirou coming during the suspenseful moments before the punchline  it worked really well.
Ah hey. While we wait to see what All Might wants to say about his past, let me divulge something I’m been observing as I’ve been revamping Future is Crimson. If Future is Crimson is Boku no Hero Academia, so to speak, One Wish is probably Gurren Lagann – sometimes more mellow, but sometimes much much more emotive. Of course, that’s a bad comparison as Future is Crimson was much more lighthearted and symptomatic of the times than One Wish was, since the latter was based on my past experiences.
Here’s something I can talk about! Girichoco, or obligation chocolates, are chocolates you give to people in Japanese Valentine’s tradition to people you don’t really have special feelings for, but you’ve worked with them (and you wish to thank them for it). Or something similar.
“If superpowers had never appeared, then humans would be taking interstellar holidays by now.” – The only source I can find that says this verbatim is Random Curiosity, which really doesn’t help at all.
Katsugeki 8
(when Mutsu appears) Why do I get the feeling they’re frenemies all over again…? Actually, they’ve always been frenemies. Scrap that.
Oh yeah. There was some Katsugeki controversy where the horse looked like…aw, whatever. Read it yourself. Mind you, horse care really is a thing in Touken Ranbu to bring up sword stats.
(squints at Yagen’s back) Yagen wears suspenders. Amazing.
(squints at Tsuru’s tomatoes) I bet someone painted them…
Amazing! It’s Shokudaikiri and Ookurikara, in Katsugeki! They were more likely to appear than, say, Midare…but still, it’s good to see them again after seeing them in Hanamaru.
Mutsu sulks a lot. Didn’t realise until now.
I have the feeling Mutsu ate everything intended for Tonbokiri…
All the daifuku are what are known as temiyage (“hand souvenirs”, literally translating) in Japanese. When you’re visiting a sick or injured person who’s recovering, it’s customary to give them a gift.
Princess Principal 7
Jack the Ripper! Me and my Detective Conan phase means I was so gung-ho about the guy once, even though he was a serial killer. Did a project on him as a result.
This man…he’s from Dorothy’s situation…I remember him because he kinda looks like Chris from YOI.
I do believe Ange is creating some not-quite-Fordism right there.
These steampunk buildings remind me of Shaun Tan a little…If you haven’t read my personal page, the highlight of my “career” with books was a wordless book inspired by the guy’s The Arrival.
If there are any bishies around here, I won’t mind them stripping for me, haha.
A girl shouldn’t have to wear makeup to be pretty. Learn to accept girls for what they are in the inside, kids.
The term “foreman” doesn’t suit women, right? “Forewoman” is a term too, y’know.
Reflection 5
This entire faceless crowd…it makes me wanna bring back the “face-stealing aliens” meme I had back in Bungou Stray Dogs.
A Café…what a weird name. It’s certainly unimaginative…
Having the volume off really shows you where the animators decided to skip frames and use the slow pans.
This boy rescuing Lisa makes me think…why is he rescuing her? Because he pities her, since she’s in a wheelchair? Because she’s a girl? Or because of human dignity, of a person helping another? I wish it were the latter, but I get the feeling at least one of the other two options is at play here…
I thought the monster was his servant. His power. Well, Stan Lee. You’ve proven yourself somewhat.
Eleanor’s optimism seems to remind me of the type I inject into my own stories. It’s weird.
Who’s the real monster? Vy and Michael? Or Warren Dallas and his crew?
*as Vy and Michael lean in for the kiss* The exact framing of this looks like a million other romance movies you see out there. Stan Lee, you’ve lost me again.
I was absolutely screaming at Volt’s “electric attack”. Calling a café “A Café” is one thing, but can’t you at least be more imaginative with the attack names???
Scare tactics don’t work if you’re going to flick the cop’s hat off, X-On.
Vy and Michael’s names appear in the credits as Vy Ray and Michael Holden (surnames not final).

Gamers! 1 | Chronos Ruler 2 | Boku no Hero Academia 28 - 29 | Katsugeki 3 - 4 | Princess Principal 2 | Saiyuki Reload Blast 3 | Classroom of the Elite 2 | Reflection 1
Gamers! 1
Apparently this is an alright comedy, so it’s the second-last debut of this season I’m trialling. I probably won’t attend most of my anime club sessions as a result of tackling most of the debuts within my reach, but I never really socialised at my anime club anyway…(?)
Kiniro Memories…Like, a parody of Kiniro Mosaic or Tokimeki Memorial or something?
I don’t see what’s so appealing about her, despite the flowers and such cueing me into how I should see her.
Super Chips, LOL. That makes me hungry, but I just ate.
…Gah? I’m only a casual gamer, so I don’t get the appeal of the back of the box.
Tasuku grabbed the cat by the plastic ring? Well, I’ll be. That’s inventive.
This guy is…such a…jerk!
The joke about King Koopa is because he uses itadakimashita at the end of his first sentence, which is really formal.
I don’t find it very surprising that girls like gaming. After all, these days, we’ve basically gotten rid of the stigma around “nerdy stuff” being “not for girls”. *thinks for a bit* Although the IT industry still suffers from a lack of girls…
This show has some gorgeous cherry blossom scenes. I pause just to observe the level of detail in each tree.
These fanservice shots are downright disturbing…
Another Gakuto this season (the second after Sasajima in 7O3X). It’s a shame I dropped 7O3X from the commentary…
G-Guh! I-It’s COD (Call of Duty)! Never thought I’d see an anime parody of it, ever! I’ve heard people speak about it, but I don’t bother with it.
A crank is “a pejorative term used for a person who holds an unshakable belief that most of his or her contemporaries consider to be false”, while a scrub is “a now generalized term used as a synonym for a “noob” or “newb,” which is someone who is bad at a video game or activity in general”. I’m not very used to gaming lingo. *sweatdrops*
Wow, that slap in the face really got me by surprise. I howled when I saw Amano’s reaction face though.
Now there’s an honorable guy! I still prefer Shiki from 7O3X, but at least now he’s not a no-face harem protag.
Who the heck is Choshinnomori? The illustrator?
I think Gamers is good enough to continue, but not enough for a commentary. Aside from Reflection vs Chronos Ruler, the lineup’s pretty much settled.
Chronos Ruler 2
Wooser’s…Casino? Never saw that one coming. Was that an intentional riff on Sanrio?
As soon as Kiri starts spouting off about negligence and goals, the Kunikida bells go off.
Nice pun! Kiru can mean “to cut”, and since there’s a metaphor involving “homeland” already, it’s a pun on a pun.
Michiko Yokote’s on this? Wow, she must get a lot of my views. I’m seeing her and Natsuko Takahashi everywhere ever since Boueibu happened.
This kaeidoscope thing reminds me of Kiznaiver. Lay Your Hands on Me is sad when you remember it was a last project of Boom Boom Satellites’ lead man.
Nyuh-huh-huh-huh…(what? That’s just a weird laugh!) Why would you call a city C’est La Vie? Well, if anything, the name is appropriate.
Wait, I just realised they had Victo naked without his strange orb in his body…for the sake of fanservice. I didn’t mind because naked dudes are my cup of tea, but still…lack of consistency is a real markdown for this show.
Kiri looks like he’s floating on that stone floor…what.
Wasn’t Victo here earlier? Why is Kiri here now?
I-It’s Hellsalem’s Lot! In Chronos Ruler! Well, wonders never cease.
Victo doesn’t even look remotely angry as he faces his old foe.
*trying not to giggle* Why is eating pasta through the nose always a punishment in anime?
Yeah, it’s now too inconsistent for me to deal with. I’m dropping it until The Reflection comes along.
Boku no Hero Academia 28
I thought it was Full Cowl…? By the way, for some reason Izuku passes an Indian restaurant twice…or is that Arabic, or Thai? I dunno, it’s hard to tell without pausing…
LOL, I laugh so hard at Bakugo’s combed down hair. It reminds me of neat!En from the Boueibu manga.
I haven’t seen Tsukauchi in a while. Hisashiburi! (Long time no see!)
Stain’s just said what Hans (Rokka no Yuusha) said about a year or two ago…hmph. It seems quite a few assassins follow that belief, eh?
Huh, that’s actually very logical…to have lots of crime where there are lots of people, so on so forth.
Manual has Tsukauchi’s eyes. Are they related somehow?
Oh no…There’s a winged Nomu, and the only one with wings in this show is…a kid from Bakugo’s friendship group! *tries not to cry*
It’s Gran Torino, kids. Regardless of whether it’s the car or the movie he’s named after, it’s Gran Torino.
I realised Shigaraki really likes spectacles. Not glasses, though.
It’s honestly so scary to see Iida this mad…
“My name is Tenya Iida. You crippled my brother. Prepare to die!” – That’s the line you want, right, Iida? Take a note out of Inigo Montoya’s (Princess Bride) book.
Boku no Hero Academia 29
Wow, I knew Endeavour wasn’t liked, but I didn’t think his sitch was that bad…
The framing choice (white, insular fadeout) was a good one, I think. Shows Deku’s blinkered thinking at a crucial moment like this.
W-Wait. They have a hero called The Fly?! You’re kidding, right? That’s a great name! Creepy, because heck, just seeing screenshots of the Cronenberg movie is enough to make you pee your pants, but…heck yeah! What a name!
Seriously, how does that hand stay on Shigaraki’s face???
Japanese society is full of modesty, but Tensei is something else.
As much as I hate to admit it, Stain’s right Iida…sorry. Thinking selfishly doesn’t work in the hero biz.
Didn’t I say Deku looked scary back in ep 13-ish? Yeah, you can see the shadow of the monster right here…Gotta take note for Half-Paid Heroes!
I was going to use the ping-pong technique in Half-Paid Heroes, actually (the same one you saw Gran Torino use a few eps back in his apartment). I think Deku might use it here…
I see! That’s why Shinso had to apper before this!
A-hey. Stain’s kinda like a vampire. How didn’t I think of that earlier? (because I already kind of knew the secret behind his Quirk)
See? I knew Deku would use that ping-pong technique! It’s perfect for covering your defences simply through speed, which is exactly what I needed for one of my characters.
Well, today I reaffirmed why I love BnHA, and why even something like Katsugeki can’t beat it! That is the love of a superhero fan, right there!
Katsugeki 3
Seriously, is it “alright” or “all right”???
I never thought Kane-san would be so willing to kick butts and take names. Or…just the kicking butts bit.
Wait, what’s a roushi?
I still don’t know what a roushi is, but it seems the Time Retrograde Army are just giving catastrophic events in the time they’re in a nudge. The ripple effect, y’know?
A touken is a sword.
Were those roushi…CGI?! Blasphemy!!! Just when the backgrounds were looking really lifelike too.
Ah, a roushi = a ronin. There you go.
Mutsu’s surprised face is…hilarious!
Tosa people have accents? I don’t know much about accents, so I gotta learn…
Come to think of it, I’ve never seen a rogue touken danshi (sword boy)…hmph.
That constable looks like Heizo Hasegawa (Onihei).
The saniwa should be a gal, didn’t I say that in a previous ep?
Kitsune are meant to love deep fried tofu.
Whose line is “I’m going to seize the world”? Mutsu’s, probably.
Katsugeki 4
The closed shop appears to be called “The Tsuda Shop” or something like it, due to something that’s been written on to the paper screens.
Satchou is this alliance.
The shop you see Tonbokiri in the doorway of is called the “Murata Shop” (Murata-ya).
Again, foxes are meant to love tofu, but here’s what a pipe fox is.
There’s a sense of foreboding looming over this anime, and it kind of scares me, but it’s par for the course in a show like this.
Mutsu’s eating an onigiri. “Same old, same old” really are the right words to use here.
An ootachi should be significantly weaker in smaller quarters, like a bridge. However, they have longer range, which means that multiple swords in the party this Saniwa has could defeat it. By the by, I consulted the wiki, and it seems we’re going through era 1 (Meiji era), so there shouldn’t be any closed quarter battles here (I think there was one in the first ep of Hanamaru).
I bet Mutsu’s gonna pull out his gun sometime during this battle, eh?…Yep, a few seconds after I predicted that, it came true. Mutsu, you nut. I know this is close to the Meiji restoration if not in the middle of it, but still, don’t go showing off your gun everywhere…
Cue “You shall not pass!” moment from Tonbokiri. (I think I should say “again”, but my memory’s being sketchy right now.) LOL.
Everyone has that one experience as a Touken Ranbu rookie where their tantou has had way too much and dies…it’s always so sad, and often a player’s first death in their party. I know, because my first tantou was a Sayo and of course, he died on me.
I wonder if Kiwame will be shown in this show…hmph.
Wowsers, I held my breath so hard at that point where Yagen seemed like he was going to lose…but hey, what a great debut for Tsurumaru! Unfortunately, I don’t know the relationship between Yagen and Tsurumaru, since I don’t own a Tsuru, but I’ve been trying to get one for the longest time. Update: Oh, that “are you surprised that someone like me came here so suddenly?” is his line when he’s obtained, meaning the saniwa must’ve smithed him and dropped him into the fray.
Princess Principal 2
I think they’re trying to pull a “moe” route with Ange right here…which is not my style, but I’m neutral on it…
S-So…Dorothy sucks at smoking? L-LOL.
How do these women live with their metal dresses? Corsets are one thing, but actual metal, like knights but all over the dress? Yeah, definitely a sign of “no pain no gain” fashion.
Wait, there’s stolen blueprints?…Oh, okay then.
Really? CGI dancing couples? *rolls eyes* This is probably second to the fedora monster (Rokka no Yuusha) as to how bad CGI can get.
This Duke…he reminds me of Rosenberg (Royal Tutor), and that is not a good sign.
Saiyuki Blast 3
Go! Play them cards, Hakkai!
The concept of a sky burial could probably make an entire anime. I should keep better notes on this stuff. Plus, birbs. Even if they’re vultures, they’re cute!
I think the thing that makes Saiyuki special, despite it being a reboot of an old show, is that it’s able to convey deep themes without ruining the mood. I think that’s missing from a lot of modern anime, especially some of the more apparent commercials.
Y-Yeah, Goku…kicking a man through the roof is overkill. (laughs anyway)
Mmhmm. I like me some dudes in tight shirts like Sanzo’s. Azrael from Ro.Te.O is designed the same way, which is one reason why I love him so much.
Trigger warning for death but, “He died from the epidemic six days ago…”
“I thought really hard about what you asked me yesterday.”
I’m not gonna stick around for UraSai this time. So not worth it…
Classroom of the Elite 2
Oh gosh. I come here for a good time and they go with Gainaxing? Really?
Well, that was unexpected. I thought Ayanokouji was going to be a blushing wreck, but he’s less harem protag and more Houtarou Oreki (Hyouka).
Mm-mm. I like me some bishie like that, Horikita. You’ve got some good taste.
Dangit, this lunch is making me hungry, and I just ate!
Well, I can’t see how you’d have bad grades if you got into an advanced “nurturing school”, so I get Horikita’s point, but I can see how people can fail with the S-System. Ayanokouji and Horikita are basically Misora and Kei from Sakurada Reset though, and that’s bad news for this show…I might need to put Youkai Apato and 7O3X back in the places they used to be in.
I think this show is focussing on Kushida fanservice too much, too early into the game. Fanservice shouldn’t be this early into a series unless the series is fanservice from start to finish (e.g. ecchi).
Best moment of this entire show was Horikita shutting down Ayanokouji, LOL. See? I work a lot better without fanservice in my commentaries.
Ah! A tiger mum, but in the form of an older brother? I see, I see *nods*.
Actually, I now think Ayanokouji’s martial arts skills passed off as “piano and calligraphy” is the best moment.
Hmph. I never thought that Horikita’s inability to get along with others was what got her into Class D. Come to think of it, Ayanokouji is probably there because he rigged the scores and isn’t very sociable either…
It’s interesting that they list the points next to the cast credits. I was losing interest in this show, but the small things are what make me sit up and pay attention!
Reflection 1
I’ve been waiting for this all season now, so here it is!
The first thing that hit me about this show was the colour palette. It’s like I’m watching a moving painting. Or a moving comic book, which I think was the point.
*sighs, somewhat happily(…?)* You know it’s America when the skyscrapers are plastered with the Stars and Stripes…Only American creators can be so proud of America, y’know? People naturally write about what they know, including the patriotism of their homelands.
It seems they even have WcDonald’s in this too, Plus DNN and so on, so forth.
Seeing the skyscrapers light up with relevant effects is cool! Real cool!
Now, if only comics would learn to empower their women better, then I’d be happy…*grumbles into distance*
Also, can someone please stop making all the minority races evil? I think I’ve seen enough evil dudes from that genre, and I haven’t even watched majority of the superhero movies that make the genre what it is.
The background scenery holds on for a little too long, a la Tsukigakirei.
Holy ninjas, Batman! That was a Russian ninja, apparently! Much cooler than an ordinary Japanese ninja, eh? (By shonen standards, at the very least?)
“At least tell me you did a ‘good job’.”
Why is it that everything in America is handled by the FBI, from aliens to superheroes? I don’t get you sometimes, America.
“Sorry, I actually live in LA.” – L-LOL!!! What even, don’t go around revealing your place of residence! Villains will come after you, don’t you know that, I-Guy???
The flat aesthetic means CGI doesn’t stand out too much, thankfully…
Huh, I never thought in my entire lifetime Stan Lee would be tackling the discriminatory nature of the term “hero”. He just never seemed to be the sort who would.
Yeah, I kinda knew 9Nine were involved with the ED, but I never quite guessed it would result in something like this. It’s a fairly typical ED, by anime standards, but still – you can tell it was done well, by a superhero great (better than trying to imitate anime a la Heroman), but it’s not to the same highs as Boku no Hero Academia or Katsugeki can take you. Therefore, Classroom of the Elite will be going on hold while I try to figure out what’s so good about this show.

7O3X 1
As you can kinda tell from these notes, I love random trivia, so this was a hype show ever since I found out about it. Then again, I never thought a quiz anime would exist in the first place prior to the announcement of this.
Okay, question 1 – why exactly did some Japanese staff member saddle this show with a name that doesn’t match the Japanese title at all? So long as you know O is a correct answer, you’re fine…
I love how they’ve styled the credits to be like a Q and A. That really works in the show’s favour.
Headband girl’s name is Mari Fukami, right? How does she pose her legs like that?!
For some reason, I like Shiki’s name in the Western order more…
Interesting how Kuroda stands out more than Shiki, knowing anime tropes.
I’m not entirely up to snuff on Japan’s nuclear stuff, but the Descartes saying is fairly well known and I got it. The thing about quiz shows is that you have to want to play along, which I’m not getting just yet, but this is just the setup stage so I’ll keep going. Sahara…The Metamorphosis (I love transformation fiction, so to get a question about Metamorphosis so early on basically means you’ve won me over, LOL)…I think the deeper this goes, the more cliché it may seem, but I like it. Especially because I remember  helping out at the library a lot (plus free pizza as a result…haha).
The books Shiki passes by include “The World of Literature You Don’t Know” and a parody of that Arukeyo Otome thing by Masaaki Yuasa that was released recently (which is based on a novel). Specifically, the name of the 7O3X version of the book is “The Morning is Short, Walk On Girl” (to use the sentence pattern of the original).
Ah, now Shiki’s a kiddo that gets me! I’ve never been too sociable to people and before I got too deep with the internet, it was just me and books, and as a result I specialised in everything English (bar writing, which I was average at). However, by the time I was 13, I lost my skills in English to essays. My love of anime made its resurgence around then so I suspect if I were still a book nerd, I wouldn’t be where I am today…
Okay, I think someone on the ‘net warned me about the panty shot. It’s a good thing Shiki is clearly uncomfortable with it…yeah. Moving on.
That club with the skirts really is disturbing, but I couldn’t help laughing like the brunette in front of Shiki.
Gakuto really made a great first impression. It wowed me. Unfortunately, the quiz show he referenced doesn’t exist, according to Google-sensei…”High School Quiz Show” apparently does, though.
I think there are specialised makers of those buzzers, Shiki. Or you could order them online or something, your call.
Please stop with the panty shot references…but sticking “April” in English really doesn’t make this question work out for me. So, to answer in Japanese, it would be shigatsu.
There are 50 stars on the American flag, right?…Yep. It wasn’t a trick question – buzzing in too fast can be a liability, so make sure you listen to the entire question before you answer!
I’d actually guess Gakuto is going to ask for “the nation with the most people”…Darnit! Oh well, I knew that one before the other guy buzzed in. Interesting how there’s Vatican Miracle Examiner this season though.
I suck at anticipating questions, but I’m good at answering like Shiki. “Et tu, Brute?” is said by Julius Caesar.
The guy to Mari’s left just seems to be fooling around. I’d know that sort of guy anywhere…*frowning face*
I don’t know about this “I fell in love” one…By the way, the text is here. That reveals the author is Dazai and Das Gemeine actually starts with “Back then, each day was the end of my life.” “I fell in love” comes after that.
Kaijou High School? Is this foreshadowing for a later opponent? Like, say, Mikuriya Chisato?
Stop it with the panty shot reference! Argh!
Wait, there’s a silhouette there in one of the circles. The long hair and colour of the circle indicates it’s most likely a girl, but probably one the staff want to keep secret…Interesting.
I’m kind of ambivalent, as this was one of 4 major hype shows for me. The number of panty shot references means they may refer to the event again in subsequent episodes, and fanservice has killed shows for me in the past. However, I’m slowly getting the hang of this quiz bowl stuff, even if I can’t always get in before the answer, and I know the emphasis is on quizzes, so I’ll give it another ep.
Saiyuki Reload Blast 1
Apparently, you don’t need to know much to get into Saiyuki so *shrugs* I’m gonna try it.
I think a more literal version of this ep title is “Sudden Storm”. “Squall” implies power as much as immediacy…
This reeks of DN Angel (late 90s/early 2000s) style, and I like it! Plus I’ve heard of the dragon/Jeep from other people who’ve talked about the series (notably there was an article on CR that convinced me to watch this and it mentioned the dragon), so…that was actually no biggie. Camera blood spatter is a bit questionable, though…
I have weird tastes in humour, as you might know from Kado. Therefore, when the woman appeared at the window, I laughed myself silly…
Shangri-la is China, so it’s natural that west China is different to east China. Kind of like how western America and eastern America are different…
I dunno why Gojyo is a water sprite, but that “diarrhoea sprite” thing is funny.
Gahh! That blonde (Sanzo) is too hot for me! No wonder people put characters on dakimakura, this guy looks right at home on one.
Well, I dunno what I just got myself into, but that was some good stuff! Next ep, please! (Plus, Granrodeo and Luck Life, the same duo of artists on Bungou Stray Dogs. That’s gotta be a good sign, right?)
Oh great, I left the ep running and it turns out there’s an after credits segment. Tsukigakirei’s after credits extras didn’t quite work for me, but since I laughed so much at the main show, this shouldn’t hurt, right?
G-Guh! The dragon can write calligraphy?! With its feet?! At least the joke works in Japanese and English…
That baldness joke works for me, considering I know Sanzo’s a priest…welp, if you get a lil’ background knowledge, it seems like you can conquer almost anything Saiyuki, and who knows what places it’ll take me in the future, eh?
Konbini Kareshi 1
I’m here for the VA talent, if nothing else. Nishiyama’s (Atsushi of Boueibu) getting a lot of side roles lately, which is great!
That running sequence took a good minute and a half, which is the same length as the OP. I almost noped out of there because that kind of thing is only compelling for about 10 seconds for me.
There’s something that’s a hybrid of Sagrada Reset, Denpa Kyoushi and Tsukigakirei here…which means it’ll probably get a low to medium rating, if anything. I can normally peg what sort of rating a show will get by its first episode, because shows tend to be consistent about what they do.
Interesting to note they don’t use shigatsu here.
The picture book is “The Mermaid Prince” (<- update: “The Merfolk Prince” is a better translation, so my bad). It was pretty obvious by the swimming sequence in the OP that at least one of these guys is a swimmer, or at least a PE nut (as some of the other things on his table suggest).<br>
I’ve never seen a younger brother be a morning person and the one to wake up a sibling. It’s always an imouto or a mother…
Wasn’t this straight romance, and not Hitorijime My Hero romance? Towa really has that bromance thing going on for him, the way Suna and Takeo (Ore Monogatari) do.
CS I think is a reference to BS Japan, one of the TV stations that shows Boueibu. Update: It’s actually highly likely to be CS-TBS, which shows the show. By the by, Nishiyama is Miki.
The red keion announcement vaguely pisses me off simply because I know that’s the light music club. I’ve seen small snippets of K-On, and while it wasn’t enough to warrant marking episodes off, catchy songs aren’t enough to keep me coming back.
This first meeting seems a little hamfisted for some reason I can’t put my finger on. However, it’s great Miki’s getting a lot of lines right here, although it’s still a side role…
The background scenery is beautiful in this show…
Here we go again…(basically, I have a very low opinion of this show, just as I suspected I would have).
I’ve got the volume on to evaluate Nishiyama, but the high-pitched teasing voice Towa just used is not natural at all. It would’ve worked better in his normal voice.
I get why the girls are fangirling over books, but I didn’t get who Michael Ende was until “The Neverending Story” came up, haha.
Glasses girl (Mami, right?) is reading something called “Glasses Man”, haha.
There’s a lot of voiceover here, as if the anime staff don’t quite care about their show enough to animate lip flaps.
As soon as she stepped on his foot and he didn’t give chase, that’s when I realised I didn’t quite care about these people. The pacing in this show, during critical moments, is just too awkward, that’s why…
Well, that was subpar. It has an opportunity to get better next ep, but I don’t care to stick around enough. However, there’s an interesting thing in the ED – there’s credits for scripting “Merfolk Prince”, meaning that may show up in a later ep. This ED sounds Coldplay-turned-Japanese, which is cool.
Knight’s & Magic 1
If you didn’t notice already, I’ve become so complacent with the premieres, this is my biggest season so far. If I finish watching every first ep I intend to watch as of the count I did for this commentary, I’d have 17 documented (7 more than on my hype list) because I have time, plus I’m relying on ANN to find me the good stuff this time.
What’s with that apostrophe in the title? As someone who likes their grammar to be correct, I just don’t like it.
I get the appeal of programming as an IT nerd, but it’s an acquired taste, plus it doesn’t have much payoff when you get frustrated at problems within your own code because it’s all a bunch of words and punctuation anyway.
Oh, it’s that effect where you-letterboxing! That’s what I was thinking of! (Reminds me of Erased.) Also, the ambient light is nice here, but the angled letterboxing is just plain weird.
CGI…bugs? That’s a pretty bad choice for monsters, IMHO.
ANN people have commented Erni’s past went too fast and I agree. Also, it’s just cliché after cliché with this show, ain’t it? Including the need to kabedon a girl.
Why does red eyed girl look like Atsushi of Bungou Stray Dogs? Plus, the wear on the mechas is nice.
Not every man – or every woman or other kind of person – dreams of robots, y’know?
“Trandorkis.” That’s the worst name I’ve ever heard in a while, and not just because it has “dork” in it, mind you.
Well, the look is shiny, bright and appealing and I can see this having a niche appeal to those who like giant robots. However, the backstory was too fast and Erni is way too OP for this world, so I’m dropping it.
Chronos Ruler 1
I’m familiar with only the first one or two chapters of the source material, so I was surprised this got adapted to anime…considering it’s a Taiwanese creator on a Jump manga though, it was kinda inevitable these days with all the Chinese coproductions.
That was a pretty interesting intro, even if it seemed like I’d watched the PV instead.
The battle there was good but a lil’ rotoscopy…hmph.
The colour scheme’s a lil’ dark…it’s a bit worrying, because Chronos Ruler normally has some pretty bright colours. I don’t want this to come off as a completely edgelord work like Big Order. I don’t seem to recall this dog though…
I’m pretty sure I don’t remember the forced humour spot, either, though it’s not as bad as, say, Bungou, where the director is known for his distinctive style of humour. Then again, my memory on this stuff is kinda vague.
This thing is starting to show cracks in its façade. Some of the movements are stiff and the CGI, while integreated well, doesn’t quite work with the 2D (although that’s shown up since the battle with the Horologue). “Cabalet” really adds to the cracks.
Every time Kiri speaks, I think of Kunikida (Bungou), so Victo is Dazai.
Adding the music to the show really adds another crack. There is absolutely no singing going on in this one singing scene.
Cue bad time puns. Puns are one of my specialties, y’know, so I don’t mind ‘em. Why else would I run LOL Yeah Shinichi, eh?
Victo, you remind me so much of +Anima’s Senri…and that’s just beautiful. Not many shows remind me of that. To anyone reading this, if you can get your hands on the old Tokyopop releases, +Anima is a gorgeous series, so go read it!
If Victo’s cards can fire at Mach 10, then he can’t beat Koro-sensei, LOL. (Ouch.)
Kids, don’t wear your hats inside. That’s an etiquette thing you should never forget, okay?
That was…strangely a much better premiere than I expected a Chinese part-production to be like! It’s better than the bunch of premieres I’ve tackled already and since good premieres are scarce, I’m taking it!
Update: Here’s another sign that doesn’t bode well for this show – it’s got the same director as Chaos Dragon (Masato Matsune), which I dropped after 2 eps. Chaos Dragon is known to be the epitome of road apples around the internet…
18if 1
18if was initially the only thing guaranteed to be out of Amazon’s greedy hands, so it’s great to see something so visually exciting ifnally be here for me. I know it’s based on a mobile game, which tend to be bad, but…c’mon, I’m struggling to find a good lineup here with what’s basically the death of Kaito x Ansa (it debuted on the 12th, but still hasn’t come CR’s way). Katsugeki’s good though, so at least that’s a lock for the commentary…
Quick –is this thing meant to be fully English? Or is this just Funimation being annoying?
Oh no, what a horrible first impression! Someone who speaks from their *erhem* and a chicken, aka cock…*muffles laughter* How dirty of me to even suggest it, but…well, it’s what we’re working with here.
The more I watch, the more confused I get.
Couldn’t Haruto have run towards the door? Or is this one of those non-lucid dreams?
This 16 frame simultaneous animation doesn’t quite work for me, but it’s an interesting hallmark of this anime.
Katsumi’s a Looney Toons Cat, sort of kind of…
The production values are mostly quite good, but unfortunately Haruto looks eyesearingly bad and I still can’t quite grasp the narrative thread of this show…
I just realised I completely didn’t care about Haruto getting his arm chopped off, not only because this is a dream world where anything can happen, but because heck, that arm drop wasn’t dramatic in the least.
“Anything can happen in this world”, eh? Including headphones being sliced off with a head, it seems.
Wait, so Yuko’s from his school? Haruto, please don’t encourage Yuko to skip school, as cool as that is.
Okay, I can see this becoming a harem crossed with The Royal Tutor…which would pretty much make this the Monogatari series. Unfortunately, because I still can’t quite detect what’s happened narrative-wise and the production values aren’t as great as they seem at first glance, I’m dropping this.
Boku no Hero Academia 27
Finally, we get out of that pool of mediocrity to get to the good stuff. Let’s go!
This new amazarashi OP is…great! Absolutely great match for this show…but as a musical choice for me, it’s kinda dull.
This old man is great humour-wise, but man, he’s basically Speed of Sound Sonic as an old geezer, LOL. The vibes between “little bro” and “big bro” are just too much.
Gran Torino really is a great old guy, basically Yoda, LOL (I had to make the comparison because even though I’ve never seen Star Wars, Horikoshi’s a fan). He can see weakness just from watching Deku on TV, which is what every great mentor should be able to do, right?
What makes movement flexible? Belief in one’s own strength and no fear for repercussions (not quite in the way Deku’s doing right now, but rather going all out all the time without having a subconscious fear drag you down). Also of course exercise and youth works in your favour.
Deku likes katsudon, LOL. No wonder he’s basically Yuri Katsuki’s little bro as well as Saitama’s, hahaha.
Best Jeanist is basically Aoyama gone pro (I’ll say ouch for Bakugou in advance).
Oh! Uwabami! I know she came from Oumagadoki Zoo, so it’s nice to see her animated!
Gahaha, Gran Torino is such a Mr Miyagi (even though I’ve never seen the original Karate Kid).
“Omazan”, LOL! This ep just keeps getting better and better!
Gahaha, I just made a comparison of Yuri Katsuki to Deku, and suddenly here come the food metaphors. This show became superhero!YOI with better comedy, and that’s just even more fantabulous than before.
This fairy tale AU, I dig it. Unfortunately, Mercy (@mercysorrows) spoilt prince!Shouto for me, but yes, this AU is just as great as the ep itself. Kaminari looks great in this, although I’m disappointed I couldn’t see Tokoyami. What a great twist at the end though, for it to be 1-A’s festival album…is that foreshadowing for a later arc, perhaps? (The All Might fire is both a fitting and a sad analogy, because All Might’s force is literally Deku’s sword and shield and All Might’s presence is what makes Deku a hero, yet it suggests Toshinori’s time as a buff man is limited…*feels all sad inside*)
Vatican Kiseki Chousakan 1
This one actually seems like it has some promise, and because I was a Detective Conan fan a few years back I’m a sucker for any new seasonal mystery series. By the way, let’s just call this “The Vatican Anime” and leave it at that, okay?
“This story is a work of fiction…” – The Vatican’s real, though, right? By the way, “succor” is, according to Google-sensei, “assistance and support in times of hardship and distress.”
The shaky camera doesn’t quite do it for me…There was similar stuff for Chronos Ruler, only that time they overdid their spinning.
I thought the door was an elevator, that’s how deceiving that doorbell was. Sheesh though, Hiraga looks like the dude from 91 Days when he’s tired (which is not a compliment!).
The Game of Angels and Demons seems to be reversi or something, Google doesn’t give me anything good on it.
*points at undressed Hiraga* Unnecessary, but wowee. Me likey.
“I’m the one who came up with the game.” – Oh, that explains why I had no proper hits on it…*sighs*
Biometrics? I thought we were in the 91 Days era, or at least another period in the past. Turns out we’re in the present (or somewhere very close to it).
Comparison to Youkai Apato here – both shows take care to state the obvious, but well…they’ve all got a good dose of (at least somewhat good looking) bishies, so I can live with that.
Okay, wait…they show Mexico on the map, but Google just keeps getting me hits for New Mexico (slightly off from the shown section of America) when I look for “aliens America 1945”, and Roswell was 1947 so uh…this really is a work of fiction, after all.
The most widespread religion where I am is Christianity, so it was optional for me to take RE back in the day. I’m not too familiar with Catholics (although there should be some if I bother to look for them), but…this smacks so much of my old RE classes yet doesn’t give me the same nostalgia as the recent Saiyuki did. Maybe it’s the cracks of subparness and the stating the obvious that are doing this.
This Jacob guy looks brainwashed. More than the other procession of priests we’ve just been introduced to, at least.
Bad CGI…then again, I keep these gripes because even Chronos Ruler does better than this and because Kado is its precedent.
“…follow the way like a little child would.”
So the show finally shows some promise! Why did it only start pulling out its big guns now? Probably lazy writing…
I know the AB negative blood is rare, but couldn’t there be someone else with that blood type around the Church? It’s not impossible, y’know?
Can someone verify the correctness of the Italian in this email?
I think we met Johannes already, so…it seems like this show has a propensity to introduce the viewer to a person twice over. That works when things are like Detective Conan (one story spread over 3 eps) but doesn’t work for 1 ep.
I get a sense of feeling of blasphemy from you guys (Hiraga and Nicolas) too, although I’ve pointed out my reasoning.
It’s a good thing it seems like the staff went out to the Vatican to get something that looks realistic, eh?
Wait, is Lauren a man?! Oh my…Also, from my version of the video (from Hidive/Sentai) I get the feeling the next ep preview got blended into the ED. Or was that just time constraints?
Wait, there’s a Horror Bunko? If I knew a Horror Bunko existed, why haven’t they started adapting stuff from it until now? I think people have been complaining about the lack of good horror works in anime…(Oh, I could probably answer my own question there – horror isn’t that popular in Japan itself. It’s popular in the West though…)
All in all, it’s not quite as Scooby-Doo as some people have pegged it to be, but not inspiring enough to continue.
Katsugeki 2
I’m pretty scarce on choice, so I’m doing what was previously never ever done before – I’m picking up one of my worst rankers (Hina Logi) to have a second look at. Mind you, we’ve had an overall stinker of a season so far.
(insert “Come at me, bro!” joke for Tonbokiri)
Huh, interesting – I’ve used female pronouns for the saniwa due to the female VA, but now that I properly listen to them, they do seem more like a dude. Does that mean that Touken Ranbu is specifically trying to go for a larger audience than just fangirls? Of course, for the fangirls, there’s Hanamaru, but Katsugeki’s way better.
Okay, Mutsu. 6 bullets is overkill, calm your gun-totin’ farm. Mutsu’s much like the typical anime protag and while he’s an alright sword, I never have been able to understand the appeal behind him. Maybe he’s for the people who like muscular bishies…? Tonbokiri and Yamabushi probably do that better than him…
LOL, these two. However, just comparing their stats, Kane-san edges over Mutsu a bit for everything aside from range…and that’s only because most swords have a short range.
When you talk about Tonbokiri, you often hear the legend, so it’s no surprise to hear it here. I’m just not good with sorting these swords chronologically though, so…Tonbikiri comes from the age of Nobunaga no Shinobi, huh? Interesting.
Daifuku.
The reason Mutsu carries a gun is because Ryoma Sakamoto was around during the dying days of the age of swords.
It’s kinda hard to hear what Mutsu’s saying from the way he talks, but the hot pot is specifically a nabe.
Noting that Tonbokiri’s ben out about 50 times, this saniwa really is a rookie and this era is probably the second or third map. Yagen isn’t too rare though, so he’s probably the biggest veteran here in regards to this saniwa. However, Mutsu’s number means that this saniwa’s starter wasn’t him…who was it, then?
Mutsu’s statement about daifuku is a pun on the fact “daifuku” means “great luck” as well as being a name for this mochi-like item.
Mutsu, weren’t you going to eat…?
What even is a Historical Restraining Force? Is that the group the saniwa is part of?…My bad, they just explained it.
One of the things that make Touken Ranbu so great is the propensity of it to go from battle action to serious drama or poignant melancholy at the drop of a hat.
This ED…was an odd choice, but has a nice singer. I realised the shots of people I don’t recognise show the swords when they were…y’know, swords. I still love the style of the next ep preview though (it’s even got the same BGM as the game!) and as expected, the citadel at the end of the ED is gorgeous.
Hina Logi 2
Good anime are scarce this season and magical girl shows that can be put through the commentary are scarcer, so…here we are.
“Rice Balls Over Flowers” is hana yori dango. Plus, hina means chick and since chicks are cute, I guess that’s where the aesthetic of the show comes from.
Someone likes the Osomatsu-san ED aesthetic, it seems.
How can you walk and not notice those breasts??? That’s exactly why I didn’t want to pick up this show again.
A qipao is a type of Chinese dress, the sort that normally has a slit up the leg and a skirt that doesn’t quite go to the knees.
Interesting, they’ve incorporated the panda hair accessories into the Trance.
For some reason, the production values here are quite nice, meaning either luck and Logic sells well in Japan or Bushiroad put a lot of their funding behind this…it’s probably a case of both.
She wants to stay with Nina, but unless she was either bored or maltreated at her home castle (which I don’t think was the case) I don’t really get Lion’s motivations…
Well, it actually was a rice ball (onigiri)! Geez, these puns…
Nina needing a logical answer is of course appropriate for a show based off Luck and Logic, LOL.
I seem to remember this Veronica lady from the original, which is funny, because I don’t remember Nina and Luck and Logic was very forgettable…
*tries to sneak away* Gratuitous boob shot? On a high schooler? Yeah, nah.
“small little town” – Small and little are the same thing though…
Trying to entice the lolicons with this ED is not good, y’know.
There really seems to be something hinted about Kagura-sensei, y’know?
I’ve termed this season “the race to the bottom”, but it was interesting to actually pull out a low ranker and give it a second chance. While I’m still not into Hina Logi as a whole and I gave it a 30 first time around, it’s probably better than that stinker Konbini Kareshi.
Hina Logi 3
*shakes head* Only in anime would someone ride a rocket like this. Only in anime.
I can’t see what Lion’s pointing to…
I am screaming profanities at my screen and shaking my head. Only in anime would a plotline like this happen. Only in anime!
I kinda understand Lion’s plight, since my dad used to go to my school to help out every now and again or have parent teacher interviews. Of course, that was when I was much younger, so…yeah. I think the staff are trying to get more younger girls involved in this by bringing in a “sexy dad”, but my tastes don’t skew that way.
Oh, now I understand Lion, but I still don’t get Mahiro, Yayoi, Karin or Karen.
Doesn’t spasibo mean “thank you” in Russian?…Yep. So Liones (country) is based on Russia, then.
Oh gosh, it’s one of those “There are two trains” questions…they bore me to death so much (and I can never solve them!) that as much as I like solving anime board questions, I’ll pass on this one.
The subber at CR decided to put their sub out of the way at the expense of being able to read the question. However, not being able to read the sub of the dialogue is a major problem! So I have absolutely no idea what the teacher was saying during the time she had that math problem up! (Also, that Foreigner question would depend on if you defeated the monster on impact or took extra time to properly defeat it.)
When there’s that screen with the four visuals on it, there’s a girl with a horned hoodie. I recognise her from the original series, but I don’t remember her name.
Here’s something on ezhiki, although there also appears to be a cookie variant.
Little kids always want their own independence, to the point where running away is one of those things most kids do, but then they come back. I don’t think I ever ran away from home, though. I was always too busy with studies and piano to run away…
I know these eyecatch-style screens are meant to be funny, but still…I never laugh at them…isn’t that sad for a show that wants to be a funny slice of life/fantasy…thing?
Last time I saw a bear in anime, it was Armed Girls Machiavellism…
Why would you ever need a bear repelling machine???
Who’s Belle?…Oh yeah, Belle is the squirrel.
Dasvidanya = goodbye. I’ve learnt more Russian because of anime than I ever would have without it (I read the entirety of Crime and Punishment thanks to that gorgeous Fyodor in Bungou Stray Dogs, y’know).

Kado 12 (FINAL) | Katsugeki Touken Ranbu 1 | Battle Girl High School 1 | Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun 1 | Youkai Apato 1 | Isekai Shokudou 1
Kado 12 (FINAL)
Shunina in 2D looks creepy as all get out…
I believe what zaShunina wants to get at is that we have reasoning and intelligence…which is half of what some people have feared about this show all along. The “humans are special” preach.
Gonno finally has a point of purpose, which is great.
I’m laughing. It really is Yandere zaShunina, LOL!
Funny thing zaShunina uses the words “way of living”. The characters that make up Shindo’s surname (真道) mean “true way”.
I have the feeling zaShunina can’t actually cry, and he’s faking it.
“…I’ve been meaning to punch you myself.” – In short, Kado really is just a shonen battle series in disguise.
zaShunina’s face makes me wanna cry. That’s the second time this season’s climaxes have attempted to bring me to tears…
Oh well, at least I got my broman-Huh? Shindo’s heart got torn out?! ewfefl/…
Hey, look. Origami bird in the anisotropic. I still want to know how to make one, dangit!
*wants to cry again* Shun-kun? You mean…Hanamori? This 16 year old is another Saraka?
*howling with laughter, but still at the brink of tears* Please, please stop making me ship Saraka and Shindo, since I never shipped them anyway. However, the biggest laugh this season was zaShunina’s many many expressions of rage, that probably beat out even that woman from the Emperor’s New Groove, LOL (Yzma).
Seeing old Hanamori – every single darned shot of him – makes me wanna cry. Plus, Yukika as a baby had a Takoyaki Cat bundle, haha.
*White Parasite spoilers!* A-Ah! So “White Parasite” really was an omen for where this show would go! zaShunina got defeated by his own power, just like La Luna, but zaShunina basically gained the range of expressions of a human, unlike Luna, who was killed off early. Ah…that’s sad. I predicted exactly where this would go without having even seen the show. *end spoilers*
*as the titlecard appears* I-I don’t get it…but wait, there’s more. Keep watching, people.
Chotto ittekimasu means “Out for a little bit”, which isn’t quite the same as “back later”, but I’ll take it.
W-Wah? It’s over…? Well, suffice to say, I was amazed beyond my imagining, so that’s great on an entertainment level (plus I laughed way too hard at Kado). However, the fact I ended up predicting a show I hadn’t even seen yet means it will have to get marked down appropriately.
Katsugeki Touken Ranbu 1
Finally, we’ve gotten to one of the big attractions of the season – I’m a fan of Touken Ranbu, so while seeing my boys animated in Hanamaru was a treat, fall 2016 was a bottleneck in the commentaries. Katsugeki needs to go above and beyond to take one of the 4 slots open to normal-form shows (BnHA’s already taken one slot).
It may be bleak (it’s kinda murky, colours-wise), but it’s…beautiful!!! (My precious Kane-san has properly come to life!) The star effect with the blood is a nice touch.
My memory’s a lil’ rusty because I haven’t played TR for a few months, but the things in the box are koban.
This thing’s like Kado in that it would make a great movie. I envy the people who get to see this in the highest possible res on a big screen…(“My anime club should seriously screen this!” is what I’m saying.)
Interestingly, they’ve chosen Kane-san, so this doesn’t accurately depict a player’s normal route through the game. Either that or this saniwa doesn’t want to sacrifice their starter on this mission. I know how precious my first Kashuu was to me, but I broke him because I was being too reckless…
The saniwa in this is a girl, so the subber who called the saniwa “he” hasn’t looked into the promo material much.
TR’s party limit is six, so this saniwa’s a real noob. (Not that I can say anything – I haven’t passed the Kiwame map yet!)
So Konnosuke can function as Google, LOL. That’s new, I never thought of that pesky fox in that way.
I bet because the Saniwa knew these were swords under the same master, she saw the shipping potential, LOL. Or maybe it’s because the two work well as a pair…
This looks a lot like the starting movie that DMM put in about one year after I started on TR. I bet that’s specifically what they were aiming for, so that’s perfect.
Ooh! What a controversial choice, to put a representation of the saniwa into the show! I wonder why they did such a thing, though?
Judging by this lineup, I’d say Mutsu was this saniwa’s starter. (I’d really like to analyse this saniwa’s choices and drops, as a fellow TR player.) Then again, if I knew the name of the era, then I’d get a better sense of this player’s capability (and judge whether I can really call them a noob or not, LOL).
Dangit, Saniwa! You have Tsuru and Mikazuki (two swords I currently don’t have)! I’m jealous of you!
That’s real cute and nostalgic, to put the preview like a recollection. A fine choice indeed, ufotable.
Kunihiro says specifically he has to try his hardest to not fail, which is slightly different to what the subs say.
Interesting. The words Kane-san uses for “tense” are “[Kunihiro] puts too much energy into his shoulders”.
Well, it’s pretty safe to say this is a keeper between hype and an almost-perfect performance for what I’d expect from a TR adaption. I’m just wondering, if all my hype shows go to commentary…what will my final one be? I planned to watch 14 shows from this season, Amazon axed a few and I added a few more based on ANN so the fight for the final spot may easily be the hardest one in the history of this commentary.
Battle Girl High School 1
Yet another anime I have come to not because I genuinely am hyped for it, but because it’s the satisfaction of seeing “how the bad fall”, if you get what I mean. Also, it’s a magical girl show – it’s basically Hina Logi all over again.
Every magical girl show does that “prophetic dream” stuff, I swear. It’s why I avoid that trope like the plague as a beginning.
Notice the title’s ganbari is in katakana…which isn’t how it’s normally done, mind you.
I’m so darned confused already…so. Girls. Battles. High School. *<-shamelessly ripped from ads I saw around my streaming service) Suddenly, idols…then Irous…? The idols know the high school girls? Wah?
There are only adult dudes here, which means this is probably for adult or teenage dudes…no wonder I feel so desensitised to this, haha.
That…may have been the most uninspired magical girl transformation I have ever seen! Grah! If you’re going to do an anime on magical girls, at least bother with the transformations! Both the CGI and the idol performance are lackluster, too, but maybe that’s because I muted this show (to not have to deal with my normal gripes for anime girl voices).
The video’s panning so fast over these girls I can only barely make out each one’s face! I have very good eyesight, thank you very much!
I swear there’s at least one battle the staff of this show haven’t shown us, which would really inform us about the rest of the show if we did see it. Proper storytelling is a must in any show or any entertainment medium!
Bad CGI doesn’t look like “real danger” to me, lady.
By the by, Fortissimo (ff) means “loud”. Therefore if I mute the show, ff loses all purpose, so to speak.
Okay. Girls, battles, high school, idols, magical girls and now yuri subtext. This show can’t pick one thing and deal with it appropriately, and in the genre of “magical girl” where even the weakest effort is more balanced than some other genre shows, not balancing smaller aspects of the genre to achieve the right payoff is just sad.
A training scene would have probably eased us in better than what the show actually did…just sayin’. It’s boring, but getting the groundwork correct is necessary if you want to have people pay attention to your story. Plus, girls, please…don’t do the derpy run with arms stuck on the side of your chest. No real girl runs like that.
*checks up the show* Oh, it’s based on a smartphone game! That should explain the large cast!
Whoa! These eyecatches are a little TMI. BWH measurements are for the dudes who watch for PLOT, but dream job? Yeah, for a card game, TMI.
Lemme guess…these PC/shogi gals will recruit Subaru, Miki and Haruka. As much as I’d say I’d like to side with the PC and shogi girls though, I can’t feel a reason to like ‘em at all. They’re not characterised enough for me to care about them.
What’s up with the red on that replanting girl’s hair?
That cut between Ms President in Chinese library and the magical girl battle really confused me for a second there.
I don’t get how Urara’s microphone/staff works…
When I checked up this show earlier, it said Sugitan was the teacher in glasses here. It disappoints me that his name is saddled on to something so confusing.
Now that I squint at the eye designs, these guys are trying to be Love Live. Knowing how popular that is just makes this pale in comprison all the more, even though I actively dislike Love Live.
It’s an unsaid rule of battling that whoever strikes first loses. Just sayin’.
There’s no precedent for how well these girls performed in the past, so a flashback would’ve done well this ep.
I knew hooded person was a girl (there are no boys in this show), but I didn’t know what her intentions were. Even knowing what they were made it really obvious this show was subpar, because she has little to no intentions at all at the moment.
They introduce another girl to fill up an already full cast? Yeah, nah.
…Yeah, that’s a clean drop. The magical girl outfits are the only good looking things about this.
Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun 1
This is an odd choice for me, but I’m just waiting for shows (other than Katsugeki) to come on to the scene…Then again, I played soccer (because I was forced to do a sport at one point, and Detective Conan has a soccer aspect to it). I’m not up to snuff on soccer rules, but…*shrugs*
I think they’re trying to get a Sakamoto vibe going here. So far, it isn’t working…
LOL. “Team Aoyama”, indeed.
The chibi face thing is reminiscent of Royal Tutor. Royal Tutor’s style is more jarring, but it works in that show’s favour more.
So what glasses man is saying is that if Aoyama were Lady Macbeth, he’d hate himself too much…ouch.
The butt guy is weird…
The soccer ball “…” worked well. Yhe artstyle for this one is clean and fairly attractive too, which works in its favour. (However, unless you like dudes in soccer uniforms or that one guy in the OP with the abs, then…yeah, this ain’t hottie territory.)
“Richie Rich”? I’m not sure that was in the Japanese, but okay.
Miwa’s great, man. Best coach I think I’ll ever see in a show like this, and that’s ‘cos I haven’t seen many of these sports shows.
Wowee, keppeki has some nasty-looking kanji! Fun facts: The zai in Kaoru’s surname is the same as in zaibatsu, and bocchan is “young master” (as used by, say, a butler to a distinguished family’s child – it’s used to Suguro in Blue Exorcist, as he’s part of a high ranking religious family).
Umm…what’s the name of the guy who got rejected by his girlfriend Anya in YOI? Georgi! This rich kid who wants to steal away Aoyama looks like Georgi!
I…don’t think I’ve ever heard a person being called a “scrub” prior to this. Apparently, it’s old fashioned slang, which is why the word suits Takechi.
Zaizen = Kamina (Gurren Lagann)??? They certainly have the “hot blooded” bit down pat.
Yeah…Takechi. I’m with Aoyama on this one. I like abs, but not yours.
The CGI is bad, but more well integrated than, say, Battle Girl’s Irous...es? Irous? (I dunno about the plural on that.)
As I said before, I’m not up to scratch on soccer terms. So a nutmeg was a “through the legs” kick (apparently known in Japanese as “crotch punching”, LOL!) and a rabona is the crossing leg thing Aoyama did.
One touch. (Chorus in back: ONE PUNCH!)
Uh, I think the ab brandish and “treasure” emphasis was a Japanese pun, but I have the volume off so I can’t tell.
Marking.
That sky shot was be-a-u-ti-ful! That is, before the soccer cleat got in the way of it…
I have the feeling Aoyama came for the white uniform?...I dunno why, though. White is hard to keep clean.
D-Does the number 10 have any special significance? *checks it up* Yeah, it does.
Oh man, Takechi talks to his abs (as well as to his friends)? This guy is becoming the death knell for this show. I know it’s meant to be funny, but it’s even weirder than the butt guy, and that says something.
The…toilet? That was one joke that was absolutely not worth the payoff.
I don’t get this Hajime no Ippo style…or maybe, because this is a comedy manga, they’re making a homage to the Hajime no Ippo style as a parody. Ahh, that makes sense now!
I’m gonna drop this. Not because it’s bad, mind you – it’s because I get confused between soccer and football (I’m from a place where “soccer” and “football” are different things), plus I don’t get soccer injokes.
Youkai Apato 1
I call this “Youkai Apato” because its full name is too long to remember…haha. This is here because of Morose Mononokean, which didn’t do too badly last year. I thought Yushi was butt ugly, but hopefully something’ll make my stay worth it.
I’m not a person who wants to become a businessman, but hey, if you can sell me the businessman life (or the youkai life) with this show, I’ll be all set!
Who dis (dude with the long hair in OP that looks like Hase)? I want him, even though I mistook him for Hase at first.
The –sou in Kotobuki-sou means “villa” or something like that. That’s why the word for “summer house” isn’t “summer house” in katakana, but rather two kanji that represent a “separate villa”…I guess…?
Scratch the Morose Mononokean references, this is more Kamisama Kiss.
I’ve noticed Maeda Realty’s second last and third last kanji are kanji for “movement” and “not” respectively…so I find the Japanese name for it, however it’s pronounced, really ironic (because Yushi wants to move, so to speak, but moving house as a verb would be hikkosu in Japanese).
Reimei Isshiki seems to be an exclusive to this show, so hopefully this show will use its author character well (knew he’d be a speaking character judging from how he needed voice credits). By the by, based on how Yushi describes Isshiki, it seems this author’s a lot like the one for Goat’s Egg (Tokyo Ghoul).
*screams incoherently* Can’t I have my fantasy of Yushi not being a darned harem protag? The way he acts around Akine, I ain’t getting it, even though my fantasy is the truth!
What an adorable dango. It’s got a rice grain texture on it (normally dango don’t have that, as you can see here).
These round blue birds I keep seeing in this show are so cute!
I applaud whoever made the backgrounds for this show. Dang, they are good.
A bath in the basement doesn’t sound too good for ventilation purposes, but that’s just speaking out of practicality. This is anime, we can get people having baths in jacuzzis on rooftops for all we care…
The landlord kinda looks like the creatures from ep 1 of Flip Flappers! Yipes!
These birds are too gosh darn adorable! *fangirl screams*
The zombie really wasn’t much of a threat…
Ooh, there’s a guy I like (redhead in ED)! I want him, too! B-But long-haired Hase…I want…
Well, it seems like long-haired Hase’ll be here next ep, so I’ll keep the show for now. If it gets a lil’ too much with the stating the obvious, then it’ll go on the drop pile.
Isekai Shokudou 1
I just ate, so…I’m not gonna be drooling here, am I? Just by the name it sure seems I will be. Well, why am I here? It seems Re:Creators is not the only reverse isekai happening this season, and because Amazon, I have to settle with this instead.
The font around the titlecard seems to be katakana, just flipped/reflected for some characters.
Seishu is apparently another name for sake.
I love how they don’t need names - they just call each other the names of the food they’re eating.
Wait, if these guys come from fantasy worlds, then they have to pay with fantasy currency, right? That’s problematic…as anyone who’s stuck overseas with their home country’s money will tell you.
Oh gosh…the boob jiggle was completely unnecessary…
I presume the contents of the pot was more beef stew, but I can’t be sure until I’ve been shown it. Why do I always feel like there will be something more suspenseful or action-like in this? Because of the fight about what suits white rice best?...Yeah, that’s probably it.
What is “knight’s sauce”???
I thought Aletta was a centaur, like Himeno (of this season’s A Centaur’s Worries). Turns out she’s a demon…
I may not be an expert on food (I watch Masterchef for the drama, LOL), so I’ll need Google to find out what corn potage is…There’s a great description of corn potage here, if you’re not familiar with it.
If I could understand more about the chef, then maybe I’d be behind this show a bit more. There’s always the backstory of the chef involved in these shows, since cooking, like anime, is a personal experience.
What’s that on the right of the tomatoes?
The breakfast special is called “morning” in katakana, which…I’ve never heard of until now. I thought “baiking = buffet” was the weirdest Japanese food concept I’d ever come across, prior to this…
I think they’re trying to go the moe route with Aletta. Moe never worked on me, people. Remember that.
14 hours on one day? I guess that’s not so demanding for a full time job, but I was a bit alarmed by it for a second since I’ve only ever dealt with part time jobs, haha. Well, it’s like the chef said – it must be pretty rough for Aletta if she’s not used to it.
Gratuitous shower scene irks me a little. A show like this should focus on what it does best and not something more or something less. I mean, this time it makes sense in context, but fanservice ruined Izetta and Matoi for me previously…so this is a bad sign.
LOL, men’s body wash…or shampoo…or something. Couldn’t really read it.
Where did this outfit come from? Is there an existing staff member that’s the same size as Aletta?
I feel like they shouldn’t have cut out Aletta’s training day. That way, there would’ve been more love for Aletta – which is what the staff seem to want. Sure, it would’ve shoved some other things out of the way, but Aletta seems like a main character, so…
My instinct says this is a dish best binged and devoured with actual food, so let’s go with that. I’m quite open to dropping it though, because it has somewhat skewed priorities in a few places.
