tagged by @godzilla-en-mexico to share a few recent favourite tracks. not that easy when you've got other stuff on your mind (tinnitus worsening). however, here are 5 tracks i think are worth checking out: Allie-X dropped a new album earlier this year and it's good stuff. Staying Power brings the energy and the message.
Cat Tyson Hughes made a gem of ambient album for quiet details at the end of last year. Watercolours is exemplary (and great for reading).
John T. Gast's Sinead Memory Tape from 2015 is an experimental and laidback album. Abyss and its reprise nestle easily in your mind.
Xiu Xiu - Stupid in the Dark Looked forward to seeing them live, but alas I had to cancel. So take this weird, dark track.
William Basinksi's Lamentations have been playing a lot when I walked through evenings of the last months. It led to having some odd hymn playing in my mind, this track comes rather close to it.
i'm tagging @modelsof-color, @power-cords, @soracities and @hellwatermelon as their blogs never fail to disappoint. Then also tagging @homeisaplaceinthehills and @ysatis, because they pop up in my notes every week and i'm curious what they listen to. And anyone else seeing this, go ahead and tag me. (edit: forgot i put this in the queue, but it's fine)

Genre: College au!, slightly chaotic neighbors to lovers, fluff ending
A/N: This story is a college au! with Quinn and Jack Hughes, they’re not drafted by the NHL in this story. This is NOT A LOVE TRIANGLE STORY. This story is supposed to be based on the chaotic lying elements of the movie, While You Were Sleeping, starring Sandra Bullock, and from the plot of Dear Evan Hansen. Shoutout and thank you to @trentfrederic11 for reviewing and editing this story for me. I’m open to any and all feedback, comments or questions; just put them in my inbox or dm me. Thank you in advance for reading, I appreciate it😌 (p.s. if you have the time, I would also really appreciate if you checked out my other pieces, know your heart, a summer in syracuse, and Your Favorite Secret. Thanks☺️).
Optional Listening: Only Us from the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack, Words Fail from the Dear Evan Hansen soundtrack)
“What if there's someone that makes me happy? Someone that I already know” -Anybody’s You by Christina Grimmie
Despite being the oldest of 3 boys, Quinn Hughes was constantly overshadowed by his younger brother, Jack. Throughout Quinn’s life, people tended to pay much more attention to the younger star forward who makes great plays and racks up more points than to the shorter defenseman who quietly makes good plays and gets points. Coaches publicly praised the younger Hughes while the older Hughes privately got good remarks. Guys would high five Jack in the hallways and invite him to hang out and girls would flirt and throw themselves at him for a chance to date him. Jack was charismatic, outgoing and everyone wanted to be around him; Quinn was dealt with introvertness, shyness and the look of existential dread. Quinn didn’t mind not receiving as much attention as his extroverted sibling but he wouldn’t mind if someone could have a conversation with him without switching the topic over to Jack. Quinn was not jealous of Jack and he was happy that his brother was popular and successful. For the first time in both of their lives, Quinn and Jack were playing on the same team full time at the University of Michigan. They were both Sport Management majors and they lived together at an off campus apartment. That’s one of the places where Quinn met you. You were his neighbor across the hall and you lived with your roommate. You, Quinn, and Jack all were in the same Pre-Calculus class as well. You sat in the middle, while Quinn sat up front and Jack sat in the back with his friends. Although the 3 of you had shared these things in common, the interaction you had together was very limited. Outside of school, Quinn and Jack were busy with hockey and you were busy with your part time job. Every now and then, you would run into each other on campus or around the apartment complex. The closest interaction you had with either Hughes brother was whenever you waved to one of them and he would wave back to you or say “hey” to you. You thought that Jack was so cute with his smile and boyish charm but you knew that he was the big man on campus. You knew that Jack would never go for someone like you but hey, you can dream right. Maybe, he could be your boy next door lover. Jack didn’t really think anything of you, you were just his neighbor and you had a math class together. He would never date you but if you were down for some time in the sheets, he may consider it. On the other hand, Quinn thought that you were cute but he also knew that you were one of those girls who liked his brother and would never consider him. Quinn wished that he was as smooth with the ladies like how Jack was but he was so awkward. Like a true introvert, Quinn was much more expressive online than he was in person. Speaking of online, Quinn followed you on Instagram and you followed him back and you both liked each other’s posts and watched each other’s stories but never sent messages to each other. Quinn couldn’t quite work up the courage to message you first (at least as himself).
One day, Jack teased Quinn about how he always stares at your door for an extra few seconds whenever he comes home and told him that he should just talk to you. Jack told Quinn just to be like him when he talked to you and even offered to tell him what to say. That sparked an idea in Quinn. Jack thought that social media was overrated so he rarely used it. Quinn decided to make a fake Instagram profile, pretending to be his brother, just so that he could talk to you. He thought you would be more likely to answer his message as Jack rather than if he sent one as Quinn. Quinn set the profile up as a secret secondary personal account. One evening, after the difficult lecture on logarithms, Quinn sent you a message (as “Jack”) asking for help on the homework assignment. Quinn actually understood the assignment but he wanted to test out the profile and to also see if you understood the homework as well. You answered “Jack’s” message and even offered to meet him in person to work on the homework together. “Jack” mentioned that he was busy with hockey stuff so he couldn’t meet soon and that he would go to the tutoring center for additional help. You couldn’t believe that “Jack” was talking to you and asking you for help first. After that first interaction, Quinn was actually surprised that it worked and he began talking to you as “Jack” more frequently; you eventually developed a friendship together. Of course, he kept his tracks covered and only mentioned specific things that related to the real Jack. Quinn told Jack that he was talking to you and Jack was happy for him. Things were looking great but that would all change in an instant on a Friday night in November.

UMich was playing a home game against one of their top rivals, Michigan State. The game was a nasty one with the score tied at 4-4. During the 3rd period, one of the Michigan State players aggressively checked Jack into the boards. The force from the hit caused Jack’s helmet to pop off and he ended up hitting his head without protection; he suffered a serious concussion. The head coach let Quinn leave early to go accompany his brother at the hospital. Their parents and their younger brother, Luke, met them at the hospital. Thankfully, Jack remembered what had happened to him and he was experiencing a lot of pain. The doctor recommended keeping Jack in the hospital for a few additional days to monitor his symptoms. Ellen, their mother, promised to keep Quinn updated on Jack’s condition and told her son not to stress about it. The news of what happened to Jack spread across campus like wildfire. You had heard about it so you decided that you wanted to get the Hughes family some flowers but you had no idea what kind they liked so you reached out to Quinn. Quinn was surprised that you had reached out to him because very few people reached out to him in regards to what happened to his brother and everyone else was reaching out to his parents and to Jack directly. Quinn responded back to you that his family didn’t need anymore flowers but that he was going to go visit Jack in the hospital. You wanted to go along with him so that you could see Jack. Quinn was not going to pass up on the opportunity to spend time with you so he let you come along. The 15 minute car ride to the hospital was a bit awkward and you and Quinn exchanged basic small talk. Quinn knew a lot about you but you didn’t know much about him; he couldn’t exactly reveal that he already knows your favorite color, favorite cake flavor and other details about yourself. On the elevator ride up to Jack’s room, Quinn told you that Jack was experiencing a mild form of amnesia (which was not true). You kept that information in your mind and it broke your heart to know that Jack may not remember what you had together. Quinn did a shift exchange with his mom; Ellen was going to go home to shower and grab a meal before staying for the rest of the night. Jack was awake and he was doing a little better. He was happy to see his brother but he was a little confused as to why his neighbor was also visiting him in the hospital. You introduced yourself to him and didn’t mention your online conversations to him because you thought that he wouldn’t remember them. You and Quinn stayed with Jack for about 2 hours until Ellen returned.
Quinn was hungry so he asked if you wanted to go to Panera Bread before going back home and you agreed to it. You tried not to let your emotions get the best of you but it hurt you so much to know that Jack had lost some of his memory. Quinn saw that you were crying and asked if you were okay. He could see that you weren’t and he wanted to hug you but he wasn’t sure if he should. You confessed to Quinn that you had a secret online friendship with Jack, that you had a crush on him and were upset that the relationship that you had with him was gone. Quinn knew about what you had with “Jack” but he pretended that he didn’t know about it. Every single piece of information about yourself that you had shared with “Jack”, from your previous toxic job to your family life, Quinn already knew but he didn’t want you to know that he knew so he decided to act as if it was his first time hearing these things. Quinn felt bad knowing that he was a contributor to your tears but it wasn’t exactly the best time to reveal what he did so he decided to switch the topic to different things to get your mind off of Jack. Although you barely knew Quinn, you were grateful that he was there for you in this moment of vulnerability. Before you knew it, Panera was closing so Quinn took you back home. After arriving at the apartment, you exchanged numbers with him and Quinn asked if you wanted to hang out again sometime. You said yes and gave him a hug before going inside. Quinn loved the way it felt to have you in his arms.
Jack only had to spend a few days in the hospital and he eventually returned back to school. He still wasn’t cleared back to play yet but UMich’s team was still going strong without him. Yes, they won the game that Jack was injured in and Quinn still continued to play. You ran into Jack a couple of times around campus and the apartment complex; a part of you wanted to restart what you had with “Jack” but the past was meant to be in the past for a reason. You had already grieved what you had together and you had essentially moved on with his brother.
Ever since your Panera crying session, your relationship with Quinn continued to grow. You began talking to each other a lot more, spending more time together and learning more about him; you both began to become more comfortable with each other over time. You and Quinn even started hanging out more at each other’s apartments and different places away from campus. You were quietly developing a little crush on Quinn but you also felt bad, acting on your feelings for him when you knew that you were previously talking to “Jack”. Quinn felt bad that he impersonated his brother to get to you but at the end of the day, he had gotten what he wanted, which was to have you. He also felt weird to know that he had you by just being himself and not pretending to be someone else. Quinn stopped thinking about what he did until one day, he was confronted about the account. One evening, Jack was surprisingly scrolling through his Instagram and saw that an account with his pictures came up under recommended people for him to follow. Jack was confused as to why someone else would steal his photos and pretend to be him so he asked Quinn if he knew anything about it. Quinn began to panic and Jack was concerned about why his brother was acting that way, he even joked that maybe Quinn was running the account. Quinn confessed to what he did and Jack was livid that his brother stole his identity. He explained why he did it but reassured Jack not to worry because he stopped using the account (he just forgot to delete it) and that you and Quinn are friends. Although it was a super messed up thing to do, Jack understood where Quinn was trying to come from and promised to keep it a secret as long as Quinn deleted the account and never did that again. At that moment, Quinn did those things and apologized to his brother. As long as the secret never came to light, things would be fine. The secret eventually did come to light because well, Quinn screwed up big time by lying to you and not all lies can stay in the dark.
____________________________________
A few weeks before the Big Screw Up, Ellen did her annual check in on her sons to make sure that they had still it together at their apartment. That day, you and Quinn went out for breakfast, made a quick Target run and came back to his mom waiting. Ellen remembered that she had met you when Jack was in the hospital but she didn’t know anything about you besides your name and that you were the boys’ neighbor. Ellen was slightly surprised that you were dating Quinn and scolded him for not telling her about you sooner. She was sort of wrong; you and Quinn weren’t exactly dating, just friends with secret crushes on each other. Ellen invited you over to dinner that night at her home so that you could meet Jim, Quinn and Jack’s father and Luke, their younger brother. You didn’t want to be rude by rejecting her invite and having a home cooked meal made by a mom, instead of cooking yourself or ordering DoorDash, didn’t hurt anyone. Before leaving, Ellen asked if you had any food allergies and if you like lasagna. You replied with what you were allergic to and that lasagna was perfect. Quinn was internally panicking because this wasn’t how he wanted for you to meet his family. Yes, he knew that a dinner at his home was his ideal way to have his family meet his lover but the two of you hadn’t even addressed the feelings you had for each other. You were excited to meet the rest of his family but you knew deep down, it was going to be uncomfortable because you weren’t Quinn’s partner but you were crushing hard on him. You were both very nervous for this dinner.
Jack decided to join you both for dinner and he drove the 3 of you there. On the car ride over to his home, you noticed that Quinn kept back looking at you. It made you anxious that he kept looking at what you were wearing. You had already spent part of the day stressing over what to wear to make a good first impression on his family, however, Quinn thought you looked amazing in your outfit. He liked the way the color you chose looked on you; it highlighted your features more. To Quinn, his feelings for you were never fully about physical attractiveness (he would know) but it was more about your heart, who you are on the inside and how all of the little details brought you together. Before going inside, Quinn told you to not worry and that his family is going to love you (he totally was not going to confess that he loves you, right before letting you meet his family). Luke, a very tall teenager, opened the door and immediately chirped his brothers for only coming home because they can’t cook. Jim was sitting on the couch, watching a baseball game and Jack joined him. Ellen was in the kitchen, finishing up the touches on the salad that was going to go with the lasagna. You offered to help Ellen but she insisted that you make yourself comfortable in their home and told Quinn to show you around. He showed you around the home that he had spent many years in and even showed you some of the pictures from his family that aligned the walls; you thought that the home was nice and that baby Quinn was so adorable. By the time you finished looking around, dinner was ready and the food was delicious. Throughout the meal, plenty of questions were asked about you and plenty of stories from the boys’ childhood were shared. After dinner and dessert, Jack went to play Call of Duty with Luke for a little bit and Quinn was on dish duty. Ellen asked for you to stay in the dining room so that she could talk to you one-on-one. She had noticed that you and Quinn weren’t deeply connected like how a dating couple would be but could sense that there was something going on between you. Ellen’s response caught you off guard and you confessed to her that you had a current crush on Quinn and a previous crush on Jack, prior to his hospital stay. She asked you why you had switched from liking one of her son’s to the other and you explained to her about your secret online chats with “Jack”, how his memory loss affected that and how you ended up with Quinn. Ellen looked a bit perplexed on the comment on Jack’s memory loss and told you that his memory was still intact. She mentioned that he may forget to take the trash out but he fully remembered the hit that injured him. Before you could fully process what you were told, Quinn came into the room to let you know that Jack was ready to leave. Ellen gave you a hug, told you that she really liked you with her son and that you are always welcome back to their home. Overall, you had a good time with the Hughes family and it was nice to get to know more about Quinn and Jack. On the car ride back home, you couldn’t stop thinking about Ellen’s comment on how Jack never lost his memory and were confused as to why Quinn would lie to you about something that serious.
You were going to ask Quinn about him lying to you but you were tired once you got home from the dinner. Things started to get a bit more busy over the next few weeks. You were drowning in midterms and other elements of school and work; Jack and Quinn were busy with preparing for the Frozen Four playoff tournament so you saw them less. Just like before, the only times that you saw them was whenever you were on campus, around the apartment complex and on the ice at their games. You didn’t want to burden Quinn with something that would be stressful for him during a very hectic time and you also didn’t want to talk to him about it over the phone, you preferred to do it in person. UMich advanced to the Frozen Four regional semifinals but were eliminated by Notre Dame in the regional finals. You wanted to start hanging out with Quinn again after the hockey season was over but there never seemed to be time for you to get together because there were so many other things going on. You were still extremely busy with school and work. You also had noticed that Quinn’s behavior around you changed a bit; he became more distant and limited his communication with you.
Ellen lectured her son about lying to you and told him that he had to tell you the truth on Jack’s condition. Quinn couldn’t lie to his mom so he told her about how he impersonated Jack to get to you and that Jack already knew about it. Ellen was in disbelief of her son’s behavior and Quinn promised her that he would come clean about it to you. Except, it took a little longer than expected and Quinn was purposefully avoiding you so that he didn’t have to face his actions. You missed being around him so you invited Quinn to come over, have dinner and watch a movie at your apartment one weekend while your roommate was away. Quinn missed seeing you so he came over and brought over some take out. As you shared your meal together, Quinn kept switching the conversation to different topics. You weren’t sure if he knew that you knew that he lied to you and you could sense that he wasn’t going to talk about it so you were going to bring it up yourself but instead, Quinn accidentally spilled out a secret that only “Jack” knew. Quinn asked you something about your recent job promotion and before you could reply, he responded that he hoped that your new manager was treating you better than the one at your old job.
Your previous job was very toxic. Your manager had created a “you vs them” type of hostile environment between you and your co-workers. You enjoyed the work that you did, you just had some issues with the manager and some of your co-workers. You had wanted to quit the job but you were so invested into it and was making good money that you didn’t want to leave. However, it all came to an end after one of your co-worker’s made a harmful and hurtful comment that they thought was a joke to you. This co-worker was very well-liked but they had been mean to you privately for months but you brushed off their comments. You decided that enough is enough and the best thing for you to do was to report your co-worker’s behavior to the Human Resources department. Your manager knew about what happened and told your co-worker about what you did. Your co-worker heard that you were the one who reported them and verbally threatened you. You quit your job that same day and got a much better part time job. You never told anyone about what had happened because you quietly moved past it and you didn’t want to ruin that person’s reputation because they were an athlete at UMich.
That was something that you never told Quinn before. Quinn knew that you worked currently but you never went into detail about your past job with him; you did share that information with “Jack” in a deep late night conversation though. In that same conversation, “Jack” shared with you that as much as he loved the attention and being popular, he felt like he had very few people who he could truly trust. One of the biggest secrets that you shared with Quinn, you told him about how your parents are divorced. You immediately asked Quinn how he knew that about you when that was something you never told him. You also asked Quinn if “Jack” told him about you and the conversations you shared. The color began to drain away from Quinn’s face; he screwed up and he screwed up big time. Quinn came clean about everything and held absolutely nothing back. He attempted to apologize to you but you were in complete shock and devastation over what he did to you. You liked Quinn a lot and even loved him a bit but he lied to you and you could no longer trust him. You did not feel comfortable with having him in the same room as you so you kicked him out of your apartment. Quinn quietly closed the door and you cried alone in your apartment.
Quinn returned back to his apartment and he was so angry with himself but felt so sad at the same time. For the first time in his life, he had someone who could see the good parts in him and wanted to be with him and not just be around him so that they could get close to his brother. Quinn knew that he was fully in the wrong and his insecurity was not a worthy explanation to deceive people. He kept trying to make himself believe this lie that he wasn’t good enough and he made it true through his actions. What you and Quinn had together was real and he felt genuinely happy with you; he was also falling in love with you. You brought so much light into his life and he loved the way it felt to be with you. He didn’t want to lose that by telling the truth about his actions because he knew there was a chance that he may never gain that connection back with you. Quinn had to stop lying to himself and face the truth head on.
____________________________________
In the weeks that followed since the Big Screw Up, Quinn kept trying to contact you but you refused to respond to him. You didn’t block his number or social media, you just never answered him. Quinn felt horrible that he hurt you and he tried different ways to reach you. He would slide notes under your door, put notes on your door, try to talk to you through your roommate; he even asked Jack to talk to you but you ignored it all. The school year began to wind down and summer was approaching soon. Finals were coming up and Quinn was running out of opportunities to speak to you. He absolutely refused to let you go and didn’t want to leave for summer break without apologizing to you again face-to-face for his terrible actions. You came home from work one day and saw the fire department was outside of the building you lived in. Just your luck during a very stressful finals week that someone would try to burn the building down. You wanted to ask Quinn if he was okay but you still weren’t speaking to him; you did miss him a lot though.
On the day of your last final of the semester, you came home and saw that there was a cake in front of your door, along with a Pandora bag and a note on the door written in a familiar handwriting that your roommate was spending some quality time with her boyfriend in the apartment before departing for the summer. You noticed that “I’m sorry” was written in frosting on the cake; the cake was in your favorite flavor and you knew it was from Quinn. You couldn’t exactly go inside of your apartment so you walked across the hall and knocked on your neighbor’s door. Quinn was surprised to see you actually standing in his doorway but he knew why you were there. He let you come inside and you sat in silence for a few minutes until the sound of your stomach growled. You were hungry after your long day and Quinn quietly cut both you and himself a slice of cake. The cake was absolutely perfect and it made your day. You asked Quinn why he bought you a cake and a gift. In regards to the cake, Quinn replied that he actually tried to make you an apology cake but he forgot to grease the pan and turned the oven temperature too high so that the cake would be ready by the time you came home; he was the one who tried to burn the apartment down. You made a mental note that you may need to get Quinn a cookbook for Christmas. You felt bad, laughing at his sweet attempted gesture but you couldn’t quite help yourself. The sound of your laugh was a sound that Quinn hadn’t heard in a while but as soon as he heard it, his broken heart started to come back together. In regards to the gift, he told you to open the Pandora bag. Inside of the bag was a beautiful charm bracelet. Before the Big Screw Up, your parents came into town to visit you and Quinn joined you together at dinner. Your parents also falsely thought that Quinn was your boyfriend. One of the things that Quinn remembered from that night was that you mentioned to your parents that you had lost the charm bracelet that they gave you as a birthday gift and you planned on getting a new one when you went home during the summer. The new bracelet wasn’t exactly the same one you got before but this new one was in your favorite color and had similar charms. You asked Quinn why got you a new charm bracelet and how he knew what charms to get you. He responded that the bracelet was a gift to you for your job promotion and he reached out to your parents to figure out what charms you had on your old bracelet and he even added some new ones.
You couldn’t believe that he went out of his way to do that for you; it made you realize that you wanted him back in your life. You apologized to Quinn for shutting him out in your anger and sadness. He accepted your apology and asked you for forgiveness for what he did. You told Quinn that you forgave him and you shared a hug. After separating from the hug, you looked right into Quinn’s eyes and confessed your feelings for him. Quinn had waited longer for more than you could possibly ever know to hear that you liked him for who he is and he felt so relieved. Caught up in his emotions, Quinn asked if he could kiss you. You said he could kiss you on the cheek for now but if he took you on a “let’s start over and try again” date and if the date went well (which it would), he could get a kiss. Quinn didn’t have to sell you on reasons to like him and he didn’t have to fix the things you rather forget. The things that happened before and split you apart wasn’t going to count anymore going forward in your relationship. It would take some time for you to fully trust Quinn again but you were willing to try. You and Quinn were suddenly startled by the sound of Jack, coming out of his room, cheering. He was glad that Quinn finally got you back and would stop moping around on how much he missed you. Quinn rolled his eyes and you laughed. All Quinn had to do was continue to be himself and that was enough. Despite being overshadowed all of his life by Jack, to you, Quinn was the better Hughes brother.

List of Hockey WAGs of Color:
(A/N: I know that no one cares or asked for this list but I created it to function as a resource. As a POC, it’s refreshing to know that not all hockey boys are romantically involved with the same carbon copy girl/stereotypical blonde, occasional brunette, white WAG. I’m not criticizing or judging any of them either, just pointing something out.)
(I’m open to receiving more additions for this list if there is anymore but only confirmed relationships, no rumors. I’m also not a bunny blog so don’t ask/send me about any gossip about these people.)
(All of the photos attached are from public profiles as of the day of posting. Some of the girls on the list have private personal profiles so please don’t request to follow them if you find their account.)
In no particular order:
Noureen DeWulf (Ryan Miller’s wife, of Indian descent)
Kristi Yamaguchi (Bret Hedican’s wife, of Japanese descent)
Adrianna Hassan (Tyler Motte’s fiancé, of Middle Eastern descent)
Micaela Gaudette (Adam Gaudette’s wife, of Korean descent)
Doniya Lehner (Robin Lehner’s wife, of Middle Eastern descent)
Katrina Connelly (Brett Connelly’s wife, of Korean descent)
Marissa Balleza (Alex Kerfoot’s girlfriend, not white)
Ashley Kadri (Nazem Kadri’s wife, of Brazilian descent)
Taia Euceda (Joel Farabee’s girlfriend, not fully white)
Jessica Merrill (Jon Merrill’s wife, of Mexican descent)
Kesha Chante (former fiancé of Ray Emery (rip), of Afro-Carribbean and Hispanic descent)
Gaby Ghosen (Pavel Zacha’s girlfriend, of Hispanic descent)
Lenasia Ned (Ethan Bear’s fiancé, of First Nations descent)

I’m not even a Leafs fan by any means (Go Canucks!) but I cannot put into words how much it means to me as a black person to see Wayne achieve this major milestone. I’m so proud of him and I literally feel like crying. This game has been so harsh and challenging for people of color and just to see him overcome all of that and reach 1,000 games, it’s just so amazing.
