4chan strikes when you least suspect it
So have you seen this video?
youtube
I knew about Goodbye Volcano high when people reacted to the trailer but I forgot about it after that.
Next thing I know I see this video and learn about Snoot game. This is probably a very rare example of a fan fix and there's a lot to learn from it. For starters, Goodbye Volcano High simultaneously bit off more than it can chew while having no ambition. In a David Cage like manner it opted to turn what is essentially a short film or a novel into a video game experience via a lot of game elements that are accepted but never fun (the only time someone found QTE events fun was when the animation it correlated with was batshit crazy but maybe they felt like their little dinosaur game was more important than it needed to be.
Not to put too fine a point on it but a LGBT project that was supposedly being partially funded by the Canadian government would explain why it was a feature at a triple A trailer reel despite being a Renpy visual novel. A lot of good PR would have been obtained had the game been a huge success, good for the LGBT community and Sony and Canada pats themselves on the back for supporting a minority group.
Everyone wins. IF THE GAME IS GOOD. Everybody would have won if the game was good. But the game wasn't good. You could say when a notable member of the staff was kicked off the project and it had to be re-written was the point where the game's success was lost. You could say that 4chan sabotaging the game by creating a parody that ended up stealing the thunder of the original game was when the game's success was lost.
But the reality is that, similar to the phrase "every battle is won before it is fought." by Sun Tzu, The reality is that systematically Goodbye Volcano High was never prepared for success. Despite all the shortcomings the trailer is still completely in line with the game. Goodbye Volcano High was no Doki Doki Literature Club. There was no secret meta defying layer to the story. It wasn't Slay the Princess where it simply opted to work within the limitations of being a story driven game and focus on an extreme amount of player guided writing.
It was always going to be about Fang and her friends discovering themselves while also facing obliteration from the meteor. It was linear and simple from the very beginning.
And that is the point where the game failed and let its community down. It put too much hope on making the game almost a cinematic experience and it almost feels like this game wanted to function more like Life is Strange but the team working on the game don't know how to handle a robust game engine and it shows as the programming mistakes made in Goodbye Volcano High are quite damning when you know how straight forward the Renpy game engine is.
So the question is, how could Goodbye Volcano High been saved?
Well the first step would be to dial back everything it showed off in the trailer. No animation beyond a GIF, no QTEs, and instead add branching paths with endings and choices that matter. That's all Snoot game did to be successful. Well, they had one more trick.
4chan utilized it's own identity to craft a narrative to work with. The main character in Snoot game is 4chan personified and the story of Snoot Game in a very meta way is about how 4chan observed Fang and by extension the basic premise and the world of Volcano High. At first it was the general loathing that you come to expect but based on your choices you can actually develop quite a fondness for the characters and the setting.
You fall in love. Quite romantic for a website that's under constant surveillance from the FBI for, well you know the reasons.
Maybe instead of the meteor being ignored until it lands it's the driving narrative. Sure, Fang still has identity and self confidence issues but on top of that she has to deal with also the thought of dying, but what if, she found a way to stop it, or at the very least survive it?
If the Dinosaurs are basically a modern society but dinos then they would have seen the Meteor months ago. The player playing as Fang could be tasked with finding some way to survive the meteor. She could befriend the 1% who are going to hide in their bunker. Doing this she would possibly have to suck up to nasty individuals and betray good friends.
Maybe you could spend the play through making enough money to buy a car and the money you have decides how many of your friends you can rescue (you can even have it to where some of your friends don't want to leave and you have to save them against their own will).
Lets get really crazy, lets say there was a Laser gun being developed to zap the meteor but it was abandoned when the government realized that it would still do a huge amount across pangea as opposed to having most of the damage in just one place but if you zap the meteor you can save your town specifically from being obliterated.
The story then becomes you breaking into the facility and dealing with the fact that while your town will consider what you did a moral good, you'll go to jail, possibly for the rest of your life and everyone affected by the fragments of the meteor will want you dead.
Lets get even crazier and say that the meteor can be destroyed completely with magic but in order to use this magic you'll have to specifically sacrifice people who are close to you. Maybe that means killing your best friends or it means becoming good friends with bad people just so you can kill them instead.
Every choice would have life changing consequences and shape the kind of character who Fang is and it would make the player very involved in the story and in Fang's development. With all those paths there's still sit around and wait death. Why not?
Renpy is a story telling tool but it functions best as a choose your own adventure novel and that's what Goodbye Volcano High should have been.
Before we wrap things up we need to talk about zoomers underestimating the wily nature of 4chan.
youtube
Keyan Carlie who is a very good content creator made his video about the forgotten failed Gravity Falls theories and during the video he didn't understand why 4chan would latch onto Gravity Falls given the nature of the show and ya know. 4chan is a den of evil white supremacy.
Tumblr media
Yes. 4chan is crazy, dangerous even. The people on that website have gone on to ruin more than a few lives (most white) for very little other than because it amused them but 4chan is also where a lot of popular culture mutates and turns into a meme.
As a result, this concoction of crazy anonymous people who have nothing but time will find the time to obsess over anything, that includes a children show. If 4chan can obsess over Deltarune and Undertale it's not going to find any reason to hands off on Gravity Falls.
Ahh, I should lay off the lad, Carlie is just a boy in his echo chamber. Not everyone grew up knowing that 4chan could strike at any moment, from any place, and for any reason.
Goodbye Volcano High devs had to learn that lesson the hard way. Are you next?

03: Privilege
Privilege is a subconscious advantage. Privilege takes many forms in our modern society and is often misused against the lesser. It is the assumption of those who consider themselves to be “privileged” that the level of accessibility to resources and experiences is undifferentiated. When we consider nature interpretation, factors such as socioeconomic factors, cultural background, native language, and lack of knowledge all influence the depth at which the natural world can be related to (Beck et al., 2018).
Peggy McIntosh’s metaphorical approach to describing privilege is an excellent foundation to this discussion (Hooykaas, 2024). She references an “invisible backpack” as the vessel that carries our assets and knowledge (Hooykaas, 2024). These assets are unearned and often do not surface to our awareness (Hooykaas, 2024). Assets such as economic status, cultural background, language, and education are examples of what the invisible backpack would be composed of (Beck et al., 2018). Each asset directly influences how we perceive, acquire, and relate to the world around us (Beck et al., 2018).
I am a young, white, university student. I am of the middle-class and am one of two children. My “invisible backpack” has facilitated the rich relationship I have with the natural world from a young age. My economic privilege rendered incredible travel expeditions across the world and exposure to exceptional environmental programs. I attend a recognized Ontario University and am on pace to receive a bachelor’s degree. My cultural background has seamlessly led to opportunities in my professional and personal life, allocating more time for leisure. I recognize that with English as my first language, a greater number of nature interpretation programs and literature are  accessible. Considering the level of privilege I possess; privilege is defined as the accessibility to opportunity unaffected by fear and the lack of sacrifice that enable a richer quality of life.
Economic privilege is an integral component when considering the accessibility one may have to nature. Individuals who have disposable income may indulge in travel and higher-end nature experiences (Beck et al., 2018). While it can be debated that the natural world is free to all people, the diversity of experiences is accompanied with a price. It is the responsibility of the nature interpreter to create affordable, inclusive experiences that are close to home (Beck et al., 2018). Education and immersive programs are a right, not a privilege and they must be delivered as such.
Cultural privilege is a sensitive aspect when discussing the accessibility one may have to nature. The participation of different cultures in nature is largely dependent on social constructs and values (Beck et al., 2018). Camping in tents is an activity that wealthy white people participate in however, to urban minorities is their reality (Beck et al., 2018). To address cultural privilege, inclusivity should be the number one priority. Personal invitations to instil that all are welcome and wanted will strengthen the bond between cultures (Beck et al., 2018).
Language privilege or proficiency is often overlooked in Canada. Canada is a country whose two national languages are English and French. Most programming, advertisements, and professionals are fluent in English and are aware of basic French (Beck et al., 2018). Courses, signage, and maps when entering a provincial park are always in English (Beck et al., 2018). Immigrant families and non-native Canadian citizens are not able to connect with the information on the natural world the same as those who are fluent in English (Beck et al., 2018). Nature interpreters must actively reduce communicative barriers and utilize multimedia approaches.
Privilege influences how one may perceive, relate, and accept the natural world (Beck et al., 2018). It is the role of the interpreter to develop strategies and programming to address these limitations and postulate solutions to become more inclusive. I recognize the privilege I have and how said privilege has exposed me to several opportunities. I encourage my peers to work alongside me in developing a sustainable, inclusive future for nature interpreters.

Alberta will block renewable energy projects on “prime” agricultural land and limit the placement of wind turbines to preserve “pristine viewscapes”, a decision that increasingly pits the western Canadian province against environmental groups pushing green energy – and the companies investing in it.
The decision, announced by the premier, Danielle Smith, and utilities minister, Nathan Neudorf, on Wednesday, follows a controversial six-month ban on new renewable energy projects that is due to expire on 29 February.
Alberta’s moratorium, announced in August, left energy companies uncertain about billions in future investment, even as the region, with its clear skies and an abundance of wind, led the country in new renewable projects.
Nearly a third of Alberta’s grid is now powered by renewables and the province has shifted away from coal at a far faster rate than expected.
But Smith has pushed back against federal rules that aim to reduce the greenhouse-gas emissions of provincial power grids.
Last month, amid recording-breaking winter temperatures, Albertans were sent emergency alerts asking them to conserve power as the electrical grid buckled from the cold. Smith and others in the province used the cold snap to express skepticism about the feasibility of renewable energy.
On Wednesday, she framed the decision to put limits on new projects as one designed to grow the industry in a “well-defined and responsible” way.
“Alberta has led the country in renewable energy investment, and we will continue to lead the country,” she told reporters.
Under its new rules, Alberta will ban renewable projects on private lands that it believes have “excellent or good irrigation capability” as well as land that can grow specialty crops.
Landowners can request an exemption if they can show crops or livestock can thrive alongside the project. Developers of projects will be responsible for cleanup costs and must secure a bond with the government.
Smith said that the new rules reflect what she called “errors” in the way liability for oil and gas companies was structured in the past – and has since led to mounting crisis in the province as officials contend with roughly 170,000 “orphaned” oilwell sites.
“You don’t correct a problem by compounding it,” the premier said.
In order to preserve its vast open prairie landscapes and sight lines of the Rocky Mountains, the province will put in buffer zones at least 35 kilometres (22 miles) separating what the government believes is a “pristine viewscape” and wind turbines.
Neudorf admitted there was no “universal definition” of the term, but cited other jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, with rules surrounding buffer zones.
Neudorf also said the policy would apply to the “vertical footprint” of all wind turbines – but that other industries that physically alter the landscape, such as coal projects or clearcut logging, would be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
The government decision was met with skepticism by renewable energy analysts, who warned the vagueness of the new rules amounted to a second “soft moratorium”.
“By introducing three new regulatory frameworks without details, investors and developers are left wondering what this actually means for their projects. Investors required certainty, and the government offered confusion,” Jorden Dye, director of the Business Renewables Centre-Canada, said in a statement.
He called the “unprecedented” 35km buffer zone a “backdoor land ban” that could eliminate the possibility of projects in three-quarters of southern Alberta.
“Overall, today’s announcement extends the climate of uncertainty and leaves us with the task of analyzing how many projects and how much investment Alberta will lose to other provinces,” he said. “Further details are needed to pin down exactly what the fallout will be. Failure to provide those details in a timely manner will also shift investment to other provinces and countries.”

Some previews below the cut :)
Gregstophe #1
His silence turned to sobs and wails of anguish, face contorting into an ugly, twisted mess as his sorrow grew, grief tearing its way into his heart and ripping it apart. He had never felt something like this before. He didn’t like it.
Not one bit.
But, as confident and leader-esque as he was, he knew to let himself cry. He was book smart yes, but he also knew that keeping his emotions in would do him no good. He wasn’t arrogant. So, as he sat there and sobbed, clutching his dear friend close to his chest in a hug, he didn’t hear all the commotion around him, and thus, didn’t notice when Satan had gone back down to Hell.
The sky was blue.
And his friend was suddenly intaking sharp gasps of air, sputtering and coughing. He greedily took as much as he could into his previously punctured lungs.
As his eyes focused a moment later, he took in the disheveled frame of the blond beside him, tears flowing down his face, which was stuck in an expression of pure shock.
“…What is ze matter wis you?”
Gregstophe #2
Christophe puts up a wall to deal with whatever is tossed his way, except for when it comes to Gregory.
He’s never been an emotional person, usually only expressing anger or irritation, & due to this many see him as cold hearted & void of emotions altogether.
Gregory is 100% ok with physical touch, while Chris is completely against it.
Gregory still makes small efforts of contact, whether it be a quick pat on the back, a hand on the shoulder (until Christophe removes it); slowly, and I mean very slowly, do the small gestures get longer (but they never last for more than a minute, & hugs are OUT of the question).
The boys have been through a lot together & have grown close. Gregory is the only one that can touch Christophe, & this has caused Christophe to lower his walls just a tad, but only to Gregory.
It is on the day of the American-Canadian war, after Chris has been killed and brought back to life, that those walls crumble down, & it’s like a metaphorical dam has broken, leaving the floodgates to ravish the Frenchman’s body. Once Gregory finds out he’s alive, the Brit clings to him as if he’d never see him again, and it’s in this moment that the boy doesn’t recoil away from the contact, but instead stiffens, before he slowly slumps & melts into the hug, bringing his arms to rest around the other, careful & timid, as if he squeezed too hard the Brit would break like porcelain.
Dip #1
Pip knew he wasn’t supposed to be in here.
The Thorn’s had been nice enough to allow him into their home, but they forbid him from ever entering this small room in the basement.
And for good reason.
Shame he didn’t listen.
-intro-
-
Humans keep the antlers of the deer that they kill as a prize.
Angels keep the horns of demons.
Demons keep the wings of angels.
Pip is always welcome into the Thorn home, but there is one room that is off limits for him -the small room in the basement. In that room is racks filled with angel wings from angels slain by demons. Pip’s wings are a dusty grey, but he’s still horrified. “Are my wings more valuable? Will they be treasured because of their color and size? Am I the smallest angel they’ve killed and want my wings???” Damien assures him that no, he won’t be harmed, and that this room hasn’t been added to in centuries -Satan doesn’t like to utilize the room anymore, but the demons of Hell don’t want to get rid of it, arguing that it is a part of their history.
-
“Pip-“
“NO! I DON’T WANT TO HEAR IT FROM YOU, YOU-YOU MONSTER! HOW DARE YOU! HOW COULD YOU DO SUCH A THING TO THOSE POOR PEOPLE?! THOSE ANGELS!”
He ignored how Damien flinched when he uttered that word.
“Pip, would you just-“
“NO! WERE YOU PLANNING ON DOING THAT TO ME, HUH?! WHERE YOU? JUST USING ME, GAINING MY TRUST, ONLY SO YOU COULD BETRAY ME AND ADD TO YOUR SICK TROPHY CASE LATER ON? ANSWER ME!”
“PIP! WOULD YOU JUST SHUT UP FOR FIVE FUCKING SECONDS?! NONE OF THIS IS MY DOING, I WOULD NEVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THIS!
He continued on, fangs gleaming as he shouted.
“LEAST OF ALL TO YOU! I CARE ABOUT YOU TOO DAMN MUCH! WHY CAN’T YOU UNDERSTAND THAT?!” At this point, the blond began to curl his greying wings around himself, a fear instinct that made his body betray his mind, as he was furious with the demon in front of him and wanted to make himself look as big and intimidating as possible.
Dip #2
Meanwhile Pip is on his way to their house, sneaking out of the orphanage at night. He had meant to leave during the day, but the nuns showed up and the orphanage and they prayed all day.
On his walk a storm hits out of nowhere, terrifying the poor Brit. He’s already terrified of storms, and this one was right on top of him, moving in the same direction he was, agonizingly slow.
In his moments of irrational thought, he books it to the Thorn’s house, jumping each time there’s a flash of lightening (which is non-stop) and the booming thunder that follows. He’s covering his ears in desperation, while also using one hand to hold onto his beloved hat.
By the time he reaches their home he’s thoroughly soaked through, shivering, and terrified. He only prays that they’re home and that they can hear his desperate knocking.
Thankfully, Satan open the door and is rightfully surprised.
“M-mister Thorn sir? Can I come in?” Formalities forgotten in his terror.
“Phillip? Goodness, what are you doing out here? Come in, come in! Quickly!” He ushers him in and yells to Damien to grab a towel and a set of his pajamas.

365: Patti Smith // Horses
Tumblr media
Horses Patti Smith 1975, Arista
There’s a man named Nicky Drumbolis who lives up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, in an apartment that doubles as perhaps Canada’s greatest bookstore almost no one has ever seen. The septuagenarian Drumbolis is short and nearly deaf, a master printmaker and eccentric autodidact linguist. For years he ran a second-hand shop on Toronto’s Queen St. called Letters, until push (the size of his collection) came to shove (skyrocketing rent) and he went north, where he could afford a sufficiently large space to spread out. Unfortunately, Thunder Bay has little market for antiquarian books and micro press ephemera, and his shop is located on one of the most crime-ridden streets in the country. And so, the transplanted Letters has no storefront—in fact, the building looks derelict, its windows boarded up and covered with what at first glance seems to be graffiti but on closer inspection resembles a detail from the cave paintings at Lascaux. Letters’ patronage is limited to the online traffic in rare first editions that brings him a small income, and the occasional by-appointment adventurer willing to make the long, long 1,400 km drive from Toronto or further abroad.
When you enter, you find yourself in what appears to be a well-kept single room used bookstore, the kind there used to be dozens of in every major city. Books of every type and topic line the shelves, neatly arranged by category, and a long glass display features more delicate items, nineteenth century broadside newspapers and the like, some so fragile they seem on the verge of crumbling into dust. But this is not, Drumbolis warns you as soon as you attempt to take a book off of the shelf, a bookstore: this room is a facsimile, a tribute exhibit to as he calls it, “the fetish object formerly known as The Book.” The real bookstore lies in the chambers beyond this front room, the full catalogues of bygone presses, the one-of-one personal editions he’s assembled over decades of following his personal obsessions, the stacks which crowd his own modest sleeping quarters.
To Drumbolis, the original utility of the book as a container and mediator of information is now effectively passed; virtually every popular book in existence has been digitized, their contents instantly available in formats that are better-indexed, more easily parsed, and more readily transferrable than the humble physical book ever allowed. To desire a book is to desire possession of the thing rather than its contents, this edition, this printing, perhaps this particular copy that once passed through the hands of someone significant. He can show you the copy of John Stuart Mills’ On Liberty that was owned by Canada’s founding father John A. MacDonald, and argue convincingly that this object helped set the course of a nation’s history; or a set of Shakespeare’s complete works bearing Charles Dickens’ ex libris, which sets off a long anecdote about how Dickens liked to troll his houseguests with a collection of fake bookshelves. Drumbolis’s collection is threaded through his life like an old wizard in a fantasy novel whose flesh has fused with the roots of a tree: he eats with his books and he sleeps with them; collecting fuels his arcane research and dictates where and when he travels; 25 years ago he uprooted his life when his collection bade him, and though he’s starved for company in the frozen city it chose for him, he abides.

My own case of collectivitis is not so advanced, though Lord only knows what I’ll be like when I’m Old (I’m currently 47). And despite the conceit of this blog, I’ve seldom spent much time in these reviews dwelling on the physical properties of my records, evaluating the relative merit of pressings and the like (or even mentioning which one I’ve got). But as I sit here listening to my copy of Patti Smith’s Horses for the first time, I feel a small but definite sense of wonderment. It’s an early ‘80s Canadian pressing, so near-mint I might’ve stepped back in time and bought it new, still with what I take to be the original inner-sleeve, pale azure (to match the Arista disc label) with a texture almost like crepe paper.
Tumblr media
It’s a delightful, surprising contrast to the iconic black and white cover portrait of Smith by her former paramour Robert Mapplethorpe. Generations of fans have stared at this image as they listened, not simply because Smith is hot (though this is undeniably true) but because the music’s visionary qualities demand an embodied locus. That a record, unlike a book, can speak aloud, has always primitively fascinated me; that this one contains what I can only describe as rituals makes it magical, this physical copy that is unique because it’s this one that is speaking to me in this moment.
Smith writes on the back of the sleeve:
“…it’s me my shape burnt in the sky its me the memoire of me racing through the eye of the mer thru the eye of the sea thru the arm of the needle merging and jacking new filaments new risks etched forever in a cold system of wax…horses groping for a sign for a breath…”
“charms, sweet angels,” she concludes. “you have made me no longer afraid of death.” The record becomes an extension of Smith’s body as it existed in that time—I think here of the physicality of the moment in “Break it Up” where you can faintly hear her striking her own chest with the flat of her palm to make her voice quaver. It makes me wonder how anyone could sell this thing once they have it: not because it is particularly rare or difficult to acquire, but because it’s hard for me to imagine the experience of slipping the lustrous black disc from its dressing and setting the needle down upon it as anything but a personal one. It is poetry and waves; the subliming of the idea of a rave-up; Tom Verlaine shedding his earthly mantle in an explosion of birds; John Cale; Kaye, Král, Daugherty, and Sohl; one of my boys from Blue Öyster Cult; the pounding of hooves and the Mashed Potato.
I suppose what I’m describing is a fetish, my pleasure in acquiring these things and writing these reviews the hard and strange work of finding life’s joy in its dusty corners. This year has run through my fingers like water, as it seems they all do now. But on my good days, all these words behind me and the records in front of me seem like a document of abundance.

First Nations groups on the Canadian side of the Columbia River Basin are adamant that salmon runs that have long been blocked by dams in the United States must be restored, potentially in a renewed river treaty between the two countries.
But experts say possible solutions, such as “salmon cannons” that suck fish through a pipe and shoot them out upstream and over obstacles, are all costly and potentially limited in their effectiveness.
Representatives from the Ktunaxa and Syilx Okanagan nations say they continue to bring up salmon restoration in negotiations for a modern Columbia River Treaty and will not stop until a solution can be reached within or outside a new agreement.
The U.S.-Canada treaty regulates the cross-border Columbia River to prevent flooding and generate hydro power. A key component of the 62-year-old treaty is set to expire in September 2024, lending urgency to the ongoing talks.
“I think what we are doing in the fight to bring salmon back is vital to us moving forward,” said Lower Similkameen Indian Band Chief Keith Crow, who is a member on the Syilx Okanagan Nation’s Chiefs Executive Council and the Nation’s lead in the Columbia River Treaty talks.
“And we’re not going to back down, either,” he said.
The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation says much of the migratory salmon run in the Upper Columbia, both in Canada and the U.S., ended with the completion of the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington state in 1942.
While the Grand Coulee Dam isn’t among four dams built in accordance with the 1961 Columbia River Treaty, First Nations leaders say the talks offer a rare opportunity for them to directly engage American officials about restoring Pacific salmon to the Upper Columbia.
“The salmon hasn’t been a big piece of (the talks), and I’ve been trying to move it forward consistently,” Crow said.
The nation opened its own hatchery near Penticton, B.C., in 2014 to help bring salmon back to Okanagan waters.
The goal, Crow said, is the restoration of natural salmon runs throughout the Upper Columbia Basin.
“We’ve been supplying salmon back to the people for years from our hatchery from the work that we’ve done, but to be able to see them actually swimming freely and coming up the Columbia the way they’re meant to be, I think it’s something I’m hoping I’m going to see in my lifetime.”
Ktunaxa Nation Council Chair Kathryn Teneese said the loss of salmon to the Upper Columbia Basin fundamentally changed communities and their ways of life, since the fish was a staple to traditional diets and held significant cultural value.
“We now have generations of people that have grown up without even knowing that salmon was very much part of our staple diet,” Teneese said. “So, from that perspective, it’s changed who we are. Because one of the things that we say is that we have a word in our language for salmon, but we don’t have access to it.
“We just fill that void with the utilization of all of the other resources off the land that we’ve always used, but there’s just a piece missing.”
Crow said salmon may have comprised up to 50 per cent of traditional Syilx Okanagan diets prior to the region losing its fish runs.
In September, the U.S. pledged more than $200 million over 20 years from the Bonneville Power Administration for reintroducing salmon in the Upper Columbia River Basin.
Crow said he has spoken with British Columbia Premier David Eby about similar long-term financial commitments on the Canadian side.
“Right now, we are kind of doing the best we can with the budgets that we get every year,” Crow said. “So, a long-term commitment would be so much more beneficial. We can get so much more done, I think.”
In June, the province agreed to separate bilateral deals with the Syilx Okanagan, Ktunaxa and Secwepemc Nations so each group receives 5 per cent of the revenue B.C. receives every year from the U.S. through the Columbia River Treaty, funding known as the Canadian Entitlement.
But the challenge in bringing salmon back to the Upper Columbia Basin isn’t limited to funding, experts say.
In 2012, a group of researchers published a report on efforts to restore Atlantic Salmon and other migrating fish species to rivers on the East Coast of North America.
The report found that the effort at three major rivers did not yield “self-sustaining populations in any eastern U.S. river” despite “hundreds of millions” in investment on the construction of hatcheries and fish passages.
“It may be time to admit failure of fish passage and hatchery-based restoration programs and acknowledge that significant diadromous species restoration is not possible without dam removals,” said the report on fish that travel between salt and fresh water.
University of Victoria Biology Professor Francis Juanes was a co-author of the report, and he said that while the topic of fish passage technology among researchers is actively discussed and constantly advancing, studies have shown the only reliable way to fully restore a natural fish run may be a dam’s removal.
Juanes said that when a dam on the Elwha River was removed about a decade ago in Washington state, “you didn’t have to reintroduce (salmon).”
“They came back naturally. In a sense, that is the best way to reintroduce salmon especially to a river system.”
Results on the East Coast where fish ladders were used, particularly the Connecticut River, were not nearly as effective, Juanes said.
“It took so much effort by so many states, and you needed the hatcheries to grow these babies. So, that’s an enormous effort, and the return just wasn’t very good.”
John Waldman, biology professor at Queens College in New York, is one of the main authors of the report.
Waldman said there is rising belief among grassroots and Indigenous groups throughout North America that dam removals may be the optimal way to restore fish runs, in lieu of the poor results from alternative passages.
“I think there’s one universal theme that has emerged over the last two decades, which is that dam removal is without question the best solution to bringing these fish back again,” he said.
“Fish ladders and fish elevators provide what’s called the halfway measure.
“It looks like to the uninitiated that you have a solution and that it works, but the truth is when you look at the actual performance of many of these fish ladders and fish elevators, not that many fish pass through them.”
The biggest dam removal project in the United States began earlier this year on the Klamath River along the Oregon-California border, where four such structures will come down by next year under a budget of US$450 million.
Discussions on removing four dams on another branch of the Columbia River Basin – in the lower parts of the Snake River – have been ongoing for years, with the U.S. federal government rejecting in 2020 the idea due to possible power-grid destabilization if the hydro electricity from the dams are removed.
Last month, U.S. President Joe Biden directed federal agencies to use all available authorities and resources to restore salmon runs in the Columbia River Basin that are “healthy and abundant.”
Biden’s order, however, stopped short of calling for the removal of the dams on the Lower Snake River in Washington state.
The Upper Columbia United Tribes, consisting of five member Indigenous nations in the U.S. Pacific Northwest, said on its website on salmon restoration that while more studies are needed, there have been “encouraging advances” in fish passage technologies such as floating surface collectors and salmon cannons to get past tall dams without the structures’ removal.
But such technology, Waldman said, is unproven in being able to support a large, natural fish migration.
“I think this is a quarter-way measure, not even a halfway measure,” he said.
“You see them emerging once in a while, and somebody gets wind of it on TV, and some late night comedians make fun of fish being shot through these these cannons. But no one’s ever ramped them up to be at a level that would sustain a natural level of migratory fish.”
But Juanes said such options may be necessary if dam removals are not possible, even if they may add stress to the salmon population and make them more vulnerable to diseases.
“For one, that’s a very costly thing to do,” Juanes said of fish-passage technology. “For two, it causes stress to the animals. I can imagine that this cannon is not a happy moment for the fish, but maybe it’s better than it dying below the dam.”
Crow, for his part, said he understands “there’s no way of getting around the fact” that dams such as the Grand Coulee remain in the migration path, posing a monumental challenge to restoring salmon migration routes.
But he said the reintroduction of salmon runs to the Upper Columbia Basin is important enough to warrant effort and funding.
“There are lots of options out there, but what is going to be the most efficient and least impactful to the salmon, and they can still get back up? That’s the key,” he said.
“I’ve been taught to think seven generations down. So, I’m looking seven generations ahead of decisions that I make today: How is it going to influence or how is it going to impact my great-great-grandkids?”

I like to visit r/nursing a lot because like candle reviews they’re a good way to look at covid surges in certain areas. what i’ve come to notice in my frequent visits is that there’s usually one megathread a day where they discuss the ethics of allowing patients to die.
it’s not grossly pro-eugenics like one would think; the conversation scarce veers into the realm of “should we withhold treatments from certain types of people?” as much it functions as a sharing circle about experiences in emergency care. “I felt an 80 year old’s sternum crumble to dust in my hands as I performed resuscitations, it was traumatic” “we intubated this patient at the family’s request and they never showed up to discuss palliative care/hospice while she was physically trying to remove the tube in her bed.” “I had a retired nurse patient who was voluntarily DNR, but was forcibly kept alive against her wishes at the request of her family. she spent the last 10 minutes of her life we salvaged in agony” “we did compressions for an hour, nonstop, on someone with zero electrical activity in their pt at the request of the family”. things like that.
I’m normally sensitive to the topic of medically assisted death because due to it’s newly rendered legal status in canada (and this dumbass country’s evil history with coercive medical procedures), some people may feel inclined to accept it as to not burden their families after a medical incident (I know there are more issues with how our assisted death policy exists but I’m only thinking about it in the context of critical conditions). While provincial health care covers many of the services needed under palliative care, end of life care can still be taxing to those who have little time and resources to expend on what the province can’t provide. Coupled with how disabled people can feel ashamed about asking for assistance with every day activities such as eating or using the bathroom, physically separated from the person they were pre-illness, requesting death should be considered a slightly more contentious matter. “What can be done to support disabled people while they are alive” and “Should we rethink how we view disability” should be asked long before “What can we do to give someone a dignified death”.
At the same time though, the latter question isn’t really given much consideration either. as with the above r/nursing examples, life and death are rarely dictated on the patient’s own terms, and it is problematic for obvious reasons for medical staff to advocate for the patient’s wishes against that of their family. The family’s behaviour in these anecdotes are understandable as these are largely unforeseen medical incidents; they likely have limited insight into the dire state of their loved one’s health and may not be ready to say goodbye yet- but it is also symptomatic of a larger trend I’ve witnessed in stories surrounding end of life care: incapacitating a disabled person renders them convenient. It’s not so much the end of life that the family is managing, but the cost of death. If that 80 year old survived her cardiac arrest and her disintegrated sternum, what would happen next, exactly? You don’t need to think that you’ve “killed” a loved one if they’re in a state where they can’t tell you what they want. You can act out ‘righteousness’ through control of their body. Depending on the cause of ailment, the patient can be exploited for personal, financial or political gain as we’ve seen in the past. More broadly, the existence of assisted suicide is weaponized to argue that public health care is a failure. Canadian conservatives are actually quite split on this issues because of how it can be utilized.
anyway can you tell that they upped my vyvanse dosage. look at all those words.

Nova Scotia Power parent company expected to detail impact of power rate cap
The fallout from the Nova Scotia government's imposed rate cap on the province's privately owned electrical utility is expected to be detailed during Emera Inc.'s earnings call today.
The parent company of Nova Scotia Power says it will provide an updated rate base investment forecast and funding plan during its third-quarter call.
The utility had applied for a nearly 14 per cent rate hike over two years with the provincial regulator earlier this year.
But the province stepped in and passed legislation to limit the power rate increase to 1.8 per cent over the next two years, excluding increases linked to fuel costs.
The changes to the Public Utilities Act also took aim at the utility's profit by preventing the regulator from approving a rate of return on equity any higher than 9.25 per cent, down from the 9.5 per cent requested.
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said last month on Twitter his government would "take the necessary steps to protect you from unfair rate increases while helping to ensure your lights stay on."
The Oct. 19 announcement sent Emera shares tumbling more than 10 per cent following a temporary trading halt, before recovering to just under five per cent down at close at $51.68 a share.
Nova Scotia Power said the cap has restricted its ability to invest in power grid upgrades and renewable sources of energy.
"This legislation prevents us from investing a planned half a billion dollars in clean energy projects in Nova Scotia," Nova Scotia Power spokeswoman Jacqueline Foster said in an email.
"It will take time to fully assess the implications of the legislation," she said. "In the meantime, we've pressed pause on our team's work on the Atlantic Loop."
The Atlantic Loop is a proposed $5-billion transmission megaproject, which would give the region more access to Labrador and Quebec hydroelectricity.
It's a key part of efforts to end the region's reliance on coal power.
Both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have committed to phasing out their coal-fired generation by 2030, while Nova Scotia has enshrined in law its goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to at least 53 per cent below 2005 levels by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Federal Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson has said Nova Scotia has limited options to meet its goal of getting off coal asides from the Atlantic Loop, but called the conflict between Emera and the province a "bump in the road."
RBC Dominion Securities Inc. analyst Maurice Choy said in a client note that the cap could prompt Emera to limit investments in Nova Scotia Power and "redirect the capital to other parts of its business, including Florida."
Emera is the parent company of Tampa Electric, which operates on the west coast of Florida.
Choy also noted that Emera could cut 60 new reliability-related jobs outlined in the utility's 2022 general rate application filed in January as part of a broader effort to rein in operating costs.
Energy analyst Bill Marshall said the government shouldn't interfere in the work of the provincial regulator.
"The entity that exists, that is empowered to decide whether the application is fair or not, is the the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board," said Marshall, president at WKM Energy Consultants Inc. in Fredericton, N.B. "They're the entity that has the power and responsibility to ensure Nova Scotia Power's investments are prudent and in the best interests of customers in Nova Scotia."
He added: "The government has overstepped its authority here by handcuffing the regulator from doing its job."
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Nov. 11, 2022.

Strategic Tax Planning for Real Estate Developers
Tumblr media
Strategic tax planning emerges as a cornerstone for maximizing profitability and ensuring long-term success. For real estate developers in Toronto, navigating the intricate tax laws and leveraging effective tax strategies is not just an option, but a necessity. This article delves into the significance of understanding and applying nuanced tax laws and outlines practical strategies that real estate developers can implement to optimize their tax positions. With insights from recent statistics and credible sources, we aim to provide a comprehensive guide to strategic tax planning tailored specifically for the real estate market in Toronto. Navigating Tax Laws for Property Development Success The real estate market in Toronto, buoyed by its economic stability and growth prospects, presents lucrative opportunities for developers. However, the complexity of Canadian tax laws can pose significant challenges. A 2023 report by the Canadian Real Estate Association highlights the importance of staying updated with the latest tax regulations, including changes in property tax rates and land transfer taxes, which directly impact the cost and profitability of real estate projects. Understanding these laws is crucial for developers to avoid unforeseen tax liabilities and capitalize on potential tax benefits. Tax incentives and rebates play a pivotal role in real estate development in Ontario. Programs such as the Ontario Home Ownership Savings Plan (OHOSP) and the HST New Housing Rebate are designed to encourage development activities by offering financial advantages. Developers need to be adept at identifying and applying for these incentives to reduce their overall tax burden. Furthermore, the intricacies of capital gains tax and how it affects the disposal of real estate assets underscore the need for expert navigation through tax laws to ensure optimal financial outcomes. The implementation of strategic tax planning begins with a thorough analysis of each development project, considering factors such as project location, type of development, and available tax incentives. This requires a collaborative effort between developers, tax professionals, and legal experts to ensure compliance with tax laws and to devise strategies that align with the developer’s financial goals. Properly structured, these strategies can lead to significant tax savings and contribute to the success of real estate projects in Toronto. Implementing Effective Tax Strategies in Real Estate Cost segregation is a strategic tax planning tool that can significantly benefit real estate developers in Toronto. By identifying and reclassifying personal property assets to shorten the depreciation time, developers can accelerate depreciation deductions, thereby reducing taxable income and improving cash flow. A recent study by a leading accounting firm in Toronto revealed that developers utilizing cost segregation strategies effectively reduced their tax liabilities by an average of 15% over the lifespan of their projects, highlighting the potential financial benefits of this approach. Another effective tax strategy is the utilization of the Deferred Development Charges Program offered by the City of Toronto. This program allows developers to defer a portion of their development charges, improving initial cash flow and enabling more capital to be invested directly into the project. Such strategies require a deep understanding of local regulations and policies, but when applied correctly, they can offer substantial financial relief and support the viability of development projects. Lastly, structuring partnerships and joint ventures in a tax-efficient manner is critical for minimizing tax liability. Choosing the right business structure, such as a Limited Partnership (LP) or a Corporation, can have significant tax implications for real estate development projects. Strategic allocation of income and capital, along with careful consideration of the tax attributes of each entity within a partnership, can optimize tax outcomes. This underscores the importance of strategic planning and professional advice in the early stages of project development, ensuring that tax strategies are integrated seamlessly into the overall development plan. Strategic tax planning is indispensable for real estate developers in Toronto, offering a pathway to minimizing tax liabilities while maximizing project profitability. The successful navigation of tax laws and the implementation of effective tax strategies require a comprehensive understanding of the real estate market, as well as a collaborative approach involving tax professionals and legal experts. By staying informed of the latest tax regulations, leveraging available tax incentives, and utilizing strategic tax planning tools, real estate developers can achieve financial efficiency and ensure the success of their development projects in the competitive Toronto market. The Backbone of Success: How Chiropractors in Canada Are Paving the Way for Ice Hockey Players Recovery from Sports Injuries
Ice hockey is not just a sport in Canada; it's a way of life. From backyard rinks to professional arenas, the passion for hockey runs deep in the veins of Canadians. However, with the intensity of the game comes the risk of injuries, which can hinder players' performance and jeopardize their careers. Enter chiropractors, the unsung heroes behind the scenes, who play a pivotal role in helping ice hockey players recover from sports injuries and get back on the ice stronger than ever.
Understanding the Demands of Ice Hockey:
Ice hockey is a fast-paced, physically demanding sport that places immense stress on the body. From sudden stops and starts to collisions with opponents, players are constantly pushing their bodies to the limit. As a result, injuries are all too common, ranging from muscle strains and ligament tears to concussions and spinal misalignments. This is where chiropractors step in, utilizing their expertise in musculoskeletal health to address these issues and facilitate the healing process.
Tailored Treatment Plans:
One of the hallmarks of chiropractic care is its emphasis on individualized treatment plans tailored to each patient's unique needs. When working with ice hockey players, chiropractors consider the specific demands of the sport and the nature of the player's injury to develop a comprehensive rehabilitation strategy. This may include a combination of spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapies, rehabilitative exercises and ergonomic advice aimed at restoring function, reducing pain and preventing future injuries.
Addressing the Root Cause:
Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses solely on symptom management, chiropractic care takes a holistic approach to healing by addressing the underlying cause of the problem. For ice hockey players, this means not only treating the immediate injury but also identifying and correcting any underlying biomechanical imbalances or spinal misalignments that may be contributing to their susceptibility to injury. By restoring proper alignment and function to the spine and nervous system, chiropractors help optimize players' performance and reduce their risk of future injuries.
Enhancing Performance:
Beyond injury rehabilitation, chiropractic care offers numerous benefits for ice hockey players looking to enhance their performance on the ice. Regular chiropractic adjustments can improve joint mobility, increase flexibility, and enhance neuromuscular coordination, allowing players to skate faster, hit harder, and react more quickly to the demands of the game. Additionally, chiropractors can provide valuable guidance on injury prevention strategies, proper biomechanics and ergonomics to help players stay healthy and perform at their best throughout the season.
A Trusted Partner in Recovery:
In the high-stakes world of professional sports, having a trusted healthcare team is essential for athletes' success and longevity in their careers. Chiropractors have earned their place as indispensable members of this team, thanks to their expertise in musculoskeletal health and their commitment to helping athletes achieve their full potential. Whether it's rehabilitating an injury, optimizing performance or providing preventive care, chiropractors play a crucial role in supporting the health and well-being of ice hockey players across Canada.
From minor tweaks to major collisions, injuries are an inevitable part of the game for ice hockey players. However, with the support of skilled chiropractors, these setbacks need not be career-ending. Through personalized treatment plans, targeted interventions, and a deep understanding of the demands of the sport, chiropractors in Canada are helping ice hockey players recover from injuries, prevent future mishaps, and stay in the game for years to come. With their expertise and dedication, chiropractors are truly the backbone of success for Canada's beloved ice hockey players.

Canada, with its breathtaking landscapes, vibrant multicultural cities, and exceptional quality of life, beckons ambitious individuals and families seeking a fresh start. If you’ve ever dream of calling Canada home, this comprehensive guide will equip you with the knowledge to check your eligibility for Permanent Residency (PR).
Understanding Canada’s PR System
Canada utilizes a points-based system called Express Entry to manage skilled worker immigration. Applicants accumulate points based on various factors that contribute to their potential success in Canada. Here’s a breakdown of the key factors:
Age: Younger applicants (generally under 40) receive more points.
Education: Higher levels of education (degrees, diplomas) earn more points.
Work Experience: Skilled work experience in an in-demand field is crucial.
Language Skills: Strong English or French language proficiency is essential (proficiency tests like IELTS or CELPIP required).
Adaptability: Points are awarded for factors like Canadian education or siblings living in Canada.
Canada PR Eligibility Criteria: A Deep Dive
Now that we understand the core factors, let’s delve deeper into specific eligibility requirements:
Age:As mentioned earlier, younger applicants receive an advantage due to the point system. The maximum age limit for eligibility is typically 49 years old.
Education:Having a minimum of secondary school education (Canadian equivalent) is essential. However, points are awarded for higher qualifications like diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, or master’s degrees. Educational credentials obtained outside Canada may require an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) to verify their equivalency to Canadian standards.
Work Experience: Skilled work experience in an occupation listed in the National Occupational Classification (NOC) is vital. NOC categorizes jobs into skill levels (Skill Level 0, A, B, etc.). Jobs in Skill Levels 0, A, and B generally offer higher point values. Having at least one year of continuous, full-time (or equivalent part-time) paid work experience in your NOC-listed occupation within the past 10 years is preferred.
Language Skills: Canada is a bilingual country. Demonstrating proficiency in English or French through standardized tests like IELTS or CELPIP is mandatory. Minimum scores are required for each language skill (reading, writing, listening, speaking).
Adaptability Factors: These factors aim to assess how well you might adapt to life in Canada. Points are awarded for factors such as:
Canadian educational experience: Studying in Canada can significantly boost your score.
Skilled work experience in Canada: Previous work experience in Canada demonstrates your suitability for the job market.
Arrangeability points: These points are awarded based on a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, a provincial nomination from a specific Canadian province, or having close family members already residing in Canada as permanent residents or citizens.
Canada PR Process: A Step-by-Step Guide
Knowing your eligibility is just the first step. Here’s an overview of the Canada PR process:
This profile is your key to the Express Entry system. It details your:
Education Credentials
Work Experience History
Language Proficiency Scores

Preparing Your PR Application Package — This detailed package requires meticulous preparation and should include the following documents:
Proof of Education: Transcripts, diplomas, degrees, and ECA (if applicable)
Work Experience Letters: Employment verification from past employers

Application Processing and Review — Once submitted, your application enters the IRCC processing queue. Processing times can vary depending on individual circumstances and current backlogs. Aim for a well-organized and complete application to expedite the process.
Permanent Residency Decision — Upon successful review, IRCC will grant you permanent residency status in Canada. This allows you to live, work, and study in Canada permanently. Congratulations! You’ve officially become a Canadian Permanent Resident
Canada PR Requirements: Your Essential Checklist
Obtaining Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada opens doors to a world of opportunity. To embark on this exciting journey, you’ll need to meet specific requirements set by the Canadian government. Here’s a comprehensive checklist to ensure you have everything in order:
Minimum Age: Generally, applicants under 40 receive an advantage due to the point system. The maximum age limit is typically 49 years old.
Education: A minimum of secondary school education (Canadian equivalent) is mandatory. Points are awarded for higher qualifications like diplomas, bachelor’s degrees, or master’s degrees.
Language Skills: Demonstrating proficiency in English or French through standardized tests like IELTS or CEL PIP is mandatory. Minimum scores are required for each language skill (reading, writing, listening, speaking).
Adaptability Factors: These factors aim to assess how well you might adapt to life in Canada. Points are awarded for factors such as:
Canadian educational experience: Studying in Canada can significantly boost your score.
Work Experience Letters: Employment verification from past employers.
Skilled work experience in Canada: Previous work experience in Canada demonstrates your suitability for the job market.
Medical Examination: Proof of a recent medical exam conducted by a physician approved by IRCC.
Police Certificates: Criminal background checks from all countries you’ve resided in for six months or more in the past five years.
Arrangeability points: These points are awarded based on a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, a provincial nomination from a specific Canadian province, or having close family members already residing in Canada as permanent residents or citizens.
Additional Documents:
Proof of funds to support yourself and any accompanying dependents upon arrival in Canada.
Valid passport or travel document.
Medical examination results from an IRCC-approved physician.
Police certificates from all countries you’ve resided in for six months or more in the past five years.
Marriage certificate (if applicable).
Birth certificates for any accompanying dependents (if applicable).
The processing timeline for a Canada PR application can vary depending on several factors, including:
Current application volume: With high application volumes, processing times tend to increase
Complexity of your application: Straightforward applications with complete documentation are generally processed faster.
Background checks: Medical examinations and police clearances can add to the processing time.
IRCC workload: Backlogs and resource constraints can affect processing speeds.
