Social Media and Van Life/ RV Life
Van life, Life on the road, and RV lifestyle may all be common terms that you have heard as you have used social media. It is no coincidence that these terms have become increasingly popular with the rise of social media. You may already know what they mean and may subscribe to content creators who demonstrate their nomadic lives on social media but you may not know how this came to be and why more and more people are choosing to live this way.
Personally, my boyfriend and I chose ‘RV Life’ for several reasons, all of which have pros and cons but we’ll cover that at the end.
Where did the nomadic lifestyle originate from? I don’t mean the nomadic lifestyle where homosapiens followed herds of animals to hunt for survival; I mean the nomadic lifestyle that involves vehicles. “It's difficult to say when the RV was invented or who invented it. Many believe that early RVs were inspired by the traveling nomadic Roma Caravans that existed in Europe during the 1800s. The first production RV — Pierce-Arrow's Touring Landau — made its debut at Madison Square Garden in 1910, (VoloCars, 2020).
Tumblr media
With the invention of the RV, families began to travel via the vast highway system in the USA. This new-found vacation method created many more upscale variations of Pierce Arrow’s Touring Landau as well as many new forms of camping via vehicles.
Tumblr media
In the 1960s ‘hippies’--as many Americans coined them–chose a nomadic lifestyle as a way to rebel from the ‘American dream' and protest the Vietnam War. The idea of this form of protest was to tear away from the materialistic world and rapid industrialization by choosing to live with less. Because of this, the Volkswagen Microbus became a symbol of rebellion against the Vietnam War. As decades went by more and more people chose to live a life of less but not for the same reasons. Hippie families would drive their RVs or vans to music festivals, vacation destinations, and national parks. This led to mass production of Winnebago products and the invention of the Good Sam Club in 1966 which encouraged the opening of RV parks and more campgrounds; giving members discounts or incentives to travel (Stacker, 2023).

Tumblr media
People today use RVs and vans to travel around the world as well as live a low-cost lifestyle.
So how does social media play a role in increasing the popularity of Van Life/RV Lifestyle? With the creation of social media content creators found that they could document their travel as a way to supplement income. This encouraged many influencers to come to fruition. The dream of traveling the world was becoming a reality for a lot of folks who were okay with living with less while creating content for others to watch how they have simplified their lives. The term ‘Van-life’ was born. People of all backgrounds became inspired and began documenting their van builds and sharing their travel experiences in the hope of gaining enough popularity to continue their content creator careers. With the explosion of this trend came many variations of van life such as ‘Skoolies’ which are school buses converted into RVs. Other builds such as truck campers, RV renovations, overland builds, and mobile tiny homes also became popular. You may have heard of content creators like MAV, Eamon and Bec, Janielle Eliana, RV Blogger, and Happily Ever Hanks to name a few. Today there are a ton of nomadic lifestyle influencers but these are the ones that I remember watching whenever my boyfriend and I were considering joining the lifestyle ourselves (CruiseAmerica).
youtube
Before social media was invented the ‘hippie lifestyle’ of a life on the road was looked down upon. American families wanted a stationary home where they could raise a family, and it was taboo to not desire that. Many of these families still owned RVs but would only use them for vacation, never to live out of. With the rise of remote jobs and jobs that require travel; fewer and fewer working couples decide to have children but instead choose to travel with their jobs building wealth while seeing the country. The rise of remote jobs and jobs that require travel made the nomadic lifestyle more understandable for the average American but still not desirable. Enter the creation of social media. Social media allowed nomads to document their adventures while on the road and Americans began to realize what they were missing by being stationary (Jesse and Rachel Lyons, 2023).
So why do so many people choose a nomadic lifestyle of living less?
Well, it has many benefits.
First of all, it is much cheaper than renting/owning an apartment or house. Most RV parks offer a monthly rate that includes all utilities for around $300-$1000 depending on the location and amenities. Campgrounds usually do not offer a monthly rate but instead offer nightly or weekly rates that can vary in price from $10-$300 depending on the location and amenities. The cost of owning a nomadic vehicle can vary greatly depending on the age, condition, and type of vehicle. Depending on your needs as the owner; it is up to you how much you are willing to spend. My boyfriend and I purchased a used 2018 Palomino Puma that was in great condition for a reasonable price that we were able to pay cash for. Our monthly rent is only $500 and includes all utilities. Every month we spend about $40 on quarters to use at the laundromat to do laundry.
Tumblr media
The second benefit is the ability to travel. We save so much money living the way we do that we can use the leftover money to pay for travel. Whenever we want to go somewhere we put the camper slide in, hook up our truck, and pull our home wherever our F350 can take us. We know we never forget anything when we go on vacation because we can bring our entire home with us!
The third benefit is that the nomadic lifestyle brings freedom: you get to experience way more things living in an RV! You are never tied down to a single location and the world is your oyster depending on how far you are willing to go!
Tumblr media
You may be thinking that it almost seems too good to be true. Well, there are some downsides to the nomadic lifestyle but they may be minor depending on who you are.
The first one is comfort. Living a nomadic lifestyle can be uncomfortable at times! You have to learn what things are essential to you and what things are not necessities because, in a vehicle, there is not nearly as much space as an apartment or house.
Everything is smaller: the kitchen, the oven, the bedroom, the bathroom, the closets! If you build out your vehicle yourself you may or may not have a large shower. You can get used to it but trying to shave your legs in a small shower is a bit challenging. Some large RVs or fancy builds may have a washer and dryer but our RV does not. Therefore we have to go to a laundromat to do laundry. Luckily we have a nice laundromat in our RV park!
You have to empty your black and gray tanks. If you don’t know what those are then here is your lesson: your dirty water and bodily fluids have to go somewhere when you flush them down the toilet or shower. All you have to do is open a valve on your tanks and empty them using a hose into a designated dump station! It sounds gross but I promise it’s not too bad if you have the right equipment and some disposable gloves.
Depending on your build you may have other odds and ends that affect your comfort level but overall these are the only ones my boyfriend and I face. Besides that, we have all the same amenities and functions of a normal house including wifi, air conditioning, heating, flat-screen TVs, a queen-sized bed, tons of storage space, and a small yard all for $500 a month! If you can get past the discomforts of living in a camping vehicle it is so worth the switch in my humble opinion.
My boyfriend and I are both students at Texas A&M University. We graduate in May and both of us have jobs lined up to work for a traveling solar construction company. We will move home-base every six months to a year depending on how large the project is. The nomadic lifestyle makes sense to us. We knew about the nomadic lifestyle from having viewed influencers on social media in the past. At first, we thought about renovating a school bus and turning it into a 'skoolie', but it became very apparent that we did not have enough time to build out a 'skoolie'. We then looked into buying a truck and trailer. Many influencers on social media would buy older campers and renovate them to be modern. Once again, we did not have enough time to renovate a camper so we opted to save up a little bit more money to buy a newer camper. Many influencers are simply people with a truck and camper who document their lives while traveling around the country. After watching many videos from RV Blogger and Happily Ever Hanks we decided that this was going to be our lifestyle. I sold my Jeep Wrangler and we bought a 2000 F350 7.3L Powerstroke pick-up truck and then we began shopping for our camper. Based on the influencers we watched we knew we wanted at least a 35ft fifth wheel. One day, a friend of a family friend listed their well-maintained barely used 2018 29 ft fifth wheel. We were hesitant to buy it since the slide function did not work and it was smaller than what we wanted but after looking at it and negotiating a good price we decided to purchase it. So began our lifestyle of RV living!
Tumblr media
Thanks to social media my boyfriend and I found our dream way of living and we are so eager to take our RV all over the country. If you are still on the fence about RV living I recommend you check out the many influencers I listed earlier because they have fantastic content about what it is like to live on the road as well as travel for work. Although I don’t plan on creating content about my boyfriend and my lifestyle other than this school project blog I can’t wait to share all the amazing pictures from the places we go with family and friends on social media.

Camp Update
Hey guys, it's me! Anthony Dice! CEO of Realm of Cascadia! Here to share some great news about camp with you all!
So, a cut of your funds that you paid to go to camp have gone to paying for excavators, and we're now digging a big hole in the center of middle earth. I wanted to be closer to camp and all of the fun action, so this will be a great change. I'm moving in this May because as you all know, I love to sleep in holes.
Adding onto that, I wanted to share this wonderful privilege with the rest of you. So, the remainder of money paid to go to camp will be used to demolish the weather ports and replace them with holes for every camper to sleep in.
Unfortunately, since we have no money left after these much needed renovations, our staff will not be getting paid this year. But! We'll be doubling the pay for our wonderful employees next year, and additionally doubling the cost of camp.
Take care, and remember our camp slogan: You're doing it well, but not well enough

HOW TO BUDGET FOR A COMPLETE HOME RENOVATION IN LOS ANGELES
Tumblr media
This is one of those big life decisions, do you renovate, or do you sell? Some things are hard to replace. If you have fantastic neighbors and a community of friends that you have cultivated over many years, that is hard to give up and maybe irreplaceable. The garden you have tenderly nurtured with its heirloom plants and prize-winning blooms is not something you can easily pack up and take with you. And then there are the memories, the good times and the not-so-good time, all the moments that add up to the sum total of your life to date.
Can you, in good conscience, walk away? Would your kids and or grandkids even tolerate the idea? Now I know that we have become a culture of nomads in this country. We do not live our lives in our communities as much as we exist online. I’m not sure that is a good thing. Time will tell. After losing many friends and neighbors this year, I am partial to the idea that home, family, and community are essential to our physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
SO HERE IS MY CASE FOR STAYING PUT AND GOING FOR A FULL HOME RENOVATION.
It is a sellers’ market. You can get full price for your home, and then you are on the other side of the equation. Now is not the best time to buy. Do you want to go through a stressful bidding process where it’s you and twenty other families in an obscene bidding war for the same house?
No matter what home you purchase, you will end up with a few renovation projects to make the house your new home. So, no matter what you do, you can’t avoid a construction project or two unless you are buying new construction. Either way, you are managing a build.
It’s your house, so it is your choice about the renovation process. You can choose to do it in stages or pull the band-aid off and go for the complete house renovation. Living in Los Angeles, where the weather is excellent all year round, makes this prospect much simpler. No chance of snow, frost, and winter weather interfering with your project. You can set up an outdoor kitchen and live in your camper in the backyard. Think of it as a nature vacation.
You decide your home renovation budget, so you control how and where the money is invested. Look for home renovation ideas on a budget. You will be on your own timeline so you can investigate budget kitchen remodels, budget bathroom remodels, and budget backyard renovations. Watch the home remodeling shows, read the home design magazines, go to the bath and kitchen showrooms. Go to open houses in your neighborhood and take the best design ideas you find.
Then you can start to assemble a working budget. You will know what things cost and how you want to invest your dollars. Here are some things to guide you on your journey to compiling your home remodel budget.
BREAKDOWN OF TYPICAL STARTING COSTS:
GUT RENOVATION VS. NON- GUT RENOVATION
In creating a budget, the first decision that impacts cost is deciding on a gut renovation vs. a non-gut renovation. A gut renovation is exactly as it sounds. You gut the house, removing everything down to the foundation. In a gut renovation, all visible surfaces are replaced. Interior walls are stripped down to the studs, and the framing is knocked out entirely.
A non- gut renovation may also involve a new kitchen, bathroom, new flooring, etc., but you will be using the existing structure and walls. A gut renovation will start at $100-$200 per square foot. A non- gut renovation will begin at about $75-$100 per square foot.
GENERAL GUIDELINE FOR A LOS ANGELES HOME RENOVATION BUDGET
Full-home renovation $100—$200 per square foot
Dry spaces- bedrooms and family rooms start at $50 per square foot.
Baths start at $400 per square foot.
Kitchens start at $300 per square foot.
Gut remodel with customization: $200—$300 per square foot.
Non-gut, remodel with customization: $200 per square foot.
Structural factors like staircases and second-floor additions- extensive customization: $300 per square foot+
Plumbing permits: from under $2,000 up to $5,000
Electrical permits: $900
Electrical permits: $900
Moving walls, adding staircases, shifting gas and plumbing, and electrical rewiring all contribute to a higher per-square-foot cost, plus add to the behind-the-scenes expenditures.
Since pricing for kitchens and baths runs higher than other rooms, more of those equal a higher price per square foot.
You can expect to see more extensive customization, fine finishes, and luxurious materials at this level and beyond. You will have access to handmade tiles, exotic wood grains, natural stone, and fine architectural details at this price point.
You might also see custom door casements and extensive lighting details at this level. There won’t be much in the way of off-the-shelf materials, and the artistry should be top-notch. Renovations that hit all of these notes can quickly run over $500 per square foot.
TIPS TO STAY ON TOP OF YOUR RENOVATION BUDGET:
Include an additional 10 to 15 percent in the budget for project overruns, unforeseen structural, plumbing, or heating problems.
Spend for high price custom materials only where it counts. Work with your designer to choose materials for maximum effect. Spend for the handmade tiles for your kitchen backsplash. They will create a standout design focus for your home. You can use standard material for the second bathroom to balance the budget.
Fix the plumbing and electrical infrastructure. Spend it now while you are under renovation or face more costly problems down the road.
Focus on kitchens and baths. Spend your money where it counts. Renovated kitchens and bathrooms add the most resale value to your home.
Consult experts upfront. If you plan to hire an architect or designer for a major home renovation, get them on board early. This can help save money by mapping out a clear plan to avoid costly changes mid-stream. Set aside 15 to 20 percent of your budget for your design team. Hire your licensed professionals early, a cost-effective way to prevent headaches later.
After planning your home renovation budget, it’s time to call in the experts. Structura Home Remodeling is the top company in the Los Angeles Area for a total home renovation.

Sometimes buildings formerly used for storeroom can be bottle of spray foam protected and converted to residential work with. Or why not consider converting a classic van or bus in a recreational vehicle? Insulate it with spray froth and you have some quiet, warm place to slumber while on that summer car ride. https://insulationline.com/ know one of many qualities from polyurethane foam is a ability to repel moisture, also prevent mildew and mold. In the event of a fabulous water issue such as a home flood as well as hurricane harm, spray foam will provide a brief dyke although a more definite solution may be arranged. Today let's bring that capability to resist deliquescent one stage further, to hazardous resources. Polyurethane foam even resists olive oil and petrochemicals, which suggest it can be used like a temporary hazmat spill containment solution.
Tumblr media
Today let's move on to a more creative avenue. Or simply been to a museum or theme park high are monitors depicting a prehistoric or maybe outdoor world including large fake big river rocks or rock n roll walls? Those boulders could be made from atomizer foam insulating. How about a fabulous spooky haunted house in a amusement recreation area? Many of the goblins and oddities inside are probably sculpted from spray froth. The same can be carried out for detailed stage sets for theatrical and film productions. The builder merely constructs basics from real wood, covers that with insert or whatever the foam can adhere to, and spray the foam on till there is the correct quantity of depth. Then the constructor can just simply carve, stone dust, and trim the foam prior to the proper appearance and consistency is completed. We have covered the secular construction uses of squirt foam, the recreational uses, the sound deadening uses, the buoyancy, the HVAC, filling voids, crisis flood control, hazmat tidy up and even theatrical uses. Cost of Solar Batteries in Perth
Cost of Solar Batteries in Perth - Many people who use solar PV systems and those of us in the solar industry look forward to the day when the cost of solar home batteries will drop to the point where they can generate a respectable return on investment. If you are looking for the Cost of Solar Batteries in Perth then you should only stay with us as we provide all the accurate information regarding solar batteries.
Although solar batteries are not the most popular way to harness solar energy, they do have some distinct advantages. The cost of any home renovation project must be taken into account, and updating or redesigning your energy infrastructure is no exception. Because of this, it's definitely worth considering whether solar batteries are the right choice for you.
How much is the cost of Solar Batteries in Perth?
Before deciding whether or not to get a solar battery, you need to understand how solar power works and what it can do for the homeowner. Solar energy is generated at a high level when solar energy interacts with components found in solar panel cells. Panels produce electricity when energy passes through them, and the systems in your home use that electricity to power the residence. If you get a chance to generate more electricity than you need at that time, you can either use it to power your home immediately or send it back to the power grid.
For a home, solar panels are often a wise investment. Even though the cost of solar batteries in Perth ranges from $3,000 to $10,000, they often pay for themselves within five years. At that point, they not only provide power to your home but also help pay for your electricity, resulting in long-term savings on utility costs. As a clean, renewable energy source that does not rely on fossil fuels, deplete other natural resources or produce carbon emissions, solar power is another excellent green energy option.
Do you really need a solar battery for your home?
Most landlords will say "no" to this. Solar battery systems large enough to power your home can be quite expensive, while solar panel systems can pay for themselves in just a few years. Solar panels may be sufficient for your electricity demands unless you live in an area with sporadic power or you have a strong desire to live off the grid.
When solar batteries are portable and used outside the home, they are more useful. Solar batteries are a practical solution for campers, RV owners, boaters, and others who don't have access to electricity. Off-grid portable solar batteries typically have a capacity of 1.2 to 1.5 kWh and cost $300 to 900.
Why you should consider solar batteries in Perth
For this reason, many solar panel installations are integrated into the existing electrical system. Even though solar panels can light your home throughout the day, they can run behind schedule or supply insufficient electricity at other times. This means that during off-peak solar hours or total power outages, your home must draw power from the local electrical grid.
On the other hand, Price of solar batteries Perth are made to recharge using the power produced by solar panels. They connect to your current solar panel system and store energy for future use when you need it most. Among the frequent applications for solar batteries are:
Power your home during a solar power outage
Use electricity when camping in remote locations
Offset brown-outs or power outages if the grid is overloaded
Get energy independence from utility providers

How to Buy Recreational Vehicles
Tumblr media
If you're planning to buy a recreational vehicle, you need to do your homework before deciding which one to buy. You can start by narrowing down your choices by considering their maintenance needs and the type of value they'll retain over time. Then, make a decision based on your personal preference and your budget. Buying a recreational vehicle is an investment and you need to take care of it properly. Buying a recreational vehicle can be an overwhelming experience, but if you know what to look for, you'll be able to make the right choice. Read on this page: https://www.recvan.com/locations to get more tips.
The next step in the buying process is financing. Many companies offer financing for recreational vehicles, and the process is much the same as buying a new vehicle. However, your credit score will be a big factor in deciding your rate of interest. Getting a credit score that's above 650 will help you secure the best possible deal. Finally, you'll need to look for a safe place to store your RV during the winter months.
A recreational vehicle, also known as a fifth wheel, is a trailer that pulls behind a car or other vehicle. It features a sleeping area and can accommodate up to six people. They're expensive to tow and need a heavy-duty vehicle. Towing a fifth-wheel RV can be expensive.
Depending on the type of recreation vehicle you have, you may want to purchase a separate insurance policy. While RV insurance can be pricey, it's often less expensive than car insurance. You'll also need to pay for storage, which costs between $50 per month to $250 a month. If you plan on using your recreational vehicle for long-term trips, you should consider taking out a policy that will protect your assets.
Another way to save money is to buy a used recreational vehicle. An older RV is more likely to be in better shape than a new one, but you'll still have to pay maintenance and repair costs for it. Fortunately, there are many ways to save money on your new RV by renovating it. With some research and the right furniture, you can make it look brand new for less money than you might expect. Choosing a recreational vehicle that meets your personal needs and budget will make your vacations more enjoyable and memorable.
Another way to save money on a recreational vehicle is to buy a truck camper. Truck campers are van-like, but they come with living quarters inside. This type of recreation vehicle is popular among couples and solo travelers because of its affordability and ease of use. They are also very easy to drive for first-timers.
Before you buy a recreational vehicle, you should decide on its size and features. Towable travel trailers can range in size and price, from tiny to large ones. While smaller ones are more affordable, larger ones come with more amenities and comforts. Besides travel trailers, you can also purchase sport utility RVs (or toy haulers) and van campers. However, you should keep in mind that these types of recreational vehicles are more expensive than small recreational vehicles, so it's important to consider your budget when making a decision. Find out more details in relation to this topic here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recreational_vehicle.

Which Camper Trailer Is Proper For You?
This introduction will hopefully help you to greater perceive the varied kinds of camper trailers on the market and what amenities you presumably can anticipate from each. Like all of the pieces, camper trailers' prime quality and worth for money will range so it is worth performing some analysis and investigation if you're planning to purchase. In spite of everything, there's no level getting a trailer with a big kitchen unit but not enough room to mattress everybody for the night time.
To start with I need to say about classic trailers. There is a roaring commerce in second hand and renovated vintage trailers, and these will look the part behind a primary automotive or truck. They're great www.blackseries.net-retro and often have wooden interiors and that conventional 1950's metallic exterior. Perhaps not for the primary time buyer, but a dream for the purist fanatic!

How I Came To Live in the Woods
Two years ago, my husband and I bought our dream house. This lovely seventies fixer-upper has robbed us of every last pound, consumed months of our time, and has signed us up for another decade of sweaty evenings and weekends spent painting, repairing, and renovating. We sometimes stop, paintbrush in hand, and ask each other, “any regrets?” Well…no—but we both pine for simpler times.
I look around and marvel at this big house and everything we’ve accumulated since our move to England. We arrived eight years ago with only a few suitcases and a handful of hopes. Unlike normal people, we didn’t ship our furniture and household goods from America. Instead, we had a massive yard sale and sold the rest on Craig’s List. I said goodbye to my sewing machine, guitar, bike, and camping equipment. We had to rebuy everything from brooms to blankets, dishes to clocks, silverware to shoes. It’s amazing how long it takes to rebuild your collection of stuff, especially when money is scarce.
Yet all this didn’t faze me. I was already well versed in the art of minimalism. When I was twenty-eight, all my worldly possessions resided inside the boot of my car. They would remain there for two years, while I tried out life as a vagabond.  When you’re young, the promise of adventure can outweigh all fear. When it’s just you—no partner, no kids—just you and the great big sky, there are more chances you can take.
It all started after reading Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho’s book, “The Pilgrimage”, which sparked my desire to embark on a solo journey to Northern Spain to walk a 500-mile pilgrimage route that’s existed since the Middle Ages. Looking back, my decision to walk this ancient path set into motion a new trajectory for my life that wouldn’t be altered for several years. Walking the path for forty days, with nothing in my backpack but my journal, clothes, food, and water, certainly perfected my predilection for a minimal existence, but it was truly the time before and after the pilgrimage, that tested my resolve to embrace the unconventional life.
I was desperate to get to Spain. I had travelled the length and breadth of The States, but outside of a quick hop to London, I hadn’t properly travelled overseas. I didn’t have any form of savings to purchase a plane ticket or even feed myself for the two months I’d be gone, yet still, I couldn’t ignore the pull to go. I had a sharp distaste for fear and regret, and a stronger desire to be the bold protagonist in my own life story, so I needed to find a way.
I was living at the time in Flagstaff, Arizona. This high-desert mountain town boasts turquoise blue skies and perpetual sunshine to beckon everyone outdoors. At 7,000 feet above sea level, it’s cooler than its neighbouring desert towns, and yields deep winter snows that will never meet the cacti of the south. Flagstaff’s natural beauty draws an alternative collection of hikers, skiers, hippies, and transients. The cost of living is high, but the desire to be there great, and so many people find whatever means they can to stay. I had heard about a few odd souls who camped in the surrounding national forest for weeks at a time. I would be one of them. It was the most feasible means of funding my travels. I was renting an apartment then, with a kindred friend, Marike. Partial to avoiding conformity, she too, knew the value in travel and adventure, and so she wasn’t hard to convince. Together, we gave up our apartment to head for the woods. I quickly sold my furniture, giving away everything that wouldn’t fit inside my small Toyota. All I had left were my books, photos, clothing and gear.
Marike and I set up our first camp in a clearing of aspens and pines a mile down a long dirt lane. It was close enough to make the morning trek to work, yet far enough from the main road to ease our minds about cops or potential serial killers. My tent was narrow and thin, but sufficient. We’d forage for firewood, heat cans of soup on the stove at night and pour water for each other to wash up in the morning. Every other day, we’d pay to shower at the local hostel. Being April, the snow still fell, and so the coldest nights would find us curled up in the car beneath heaps of blankets, where sleep was fickle and fragmented. It was challenging, uncomfortable, and at times scary, but also exhilarating. The difficulties were dotted with starry skies, deep conversations, and the perpetual fresh mountain air that magically invigorated us despite it all. I felt raw and alive, my eyes open and senses heightened. My inner strength was blossoming, and my fears grew smaller, giving way to a confidence that began to permeate all aspects of my life.
Soon after, I left for Spain. Walking the pilgrimage was an epic alter reality that inspired and stimulated me daily. The path had brought many wonders and gifts—among them, a thirst for freedom, both internal and external. I felt tethered to nothing and life’s possibilities seemed boundless. The journey had liberated me from nearly all my money and material possessions, so when I returned to Flagstaff, I wasn’t ready to buy furniture, pay rent, and adopt a normal life. So, I returned to the woods. Marike had left for other adventures, and I was on my own, uncertain of how long I’d be there.
I was a vulnerable single woman alone in the forest, but through either ignorance or grace, I felt protected. I enjoyed the town and the trails by day and spent time with friends in the evening. I’d often find my way to the local bookstore before bed. Their late hours gave me a pseudo living room to read and write before driving back to the forest. On my way to the woods, I’d roll down the window to inhale the sweet smell of wood smoke escaping from well-lit houses, where people sprawled happily on couches, glasses of wine in hand. The line between liberating and lonely began to blur as winter closed in, but still, I was in a pleasant state of surrender. I believed life would shepherd me to extraordinary things, and magically it did.
At a random party, in a place I had never been, I met a married couple, Vickie and Bruce, who were soon to sail around the coast of Mexico for three months. I foolishly disregarded them as a wealthy privileged pair whom I’d have nothing in common with. Yet as our conversation grew, I quickly realised that they were making sacrifices to pursue their dreams, the same as I. And, when they asked me to look after their pets and home while they were away, I was humbled with euphoric gratitude. It was a blessed encounter that, not only granted me a home during the cold winter months but brought me a lasting friendship. For this couple, who were once two strangers, became dear friends. And their home became a haven of warmth and stability, to write, relax, and even grieve when my father unexpectedly died months after. And, two years later, when I met my husband, Vickie presided over our wedding.
Vickie and Bruce went on several long jaunts to Mexico, in which I was always happy to look after their home and pets. And in between, I found several other house-sitting jobs. I stayed in homes with hot tubs and hammocks, along rivers and among mountains. The most remote dwellings were quiet and wild, and I’d spy elk, coyote, and bear. Some were affluent, and afforded me weeks of luxury, soaking in big baths, lounging on plush furniture and dining in stylish kitchens. Others were more rustic. One January, I looked after a cat in a converted camper van on the edge of town. Without any electricity or water, the camper had only a small built-in wood burner to shield me from the worst of the winter cold. In three feet of snow, I’d chop logs into kindling and fall asleep to a roaring fire that demanded to be rebuilt several hours later, yanking me from sleep to action.
When one job finished, another would harmoniously begin. I only occasionally camped in the woods in the interims. Everything seemed to fall into place to facilitate this unconventional existence. It gave me courage, trust, confidence, and the precious gift of time. In escaping from the rat race, I bought myself time—to simply be—a luxury I have so little of now. It’s hard to believe I lived like that for two years. But in my wandering spell, I’d somehow cultivated true peace within myself. And even now, in life’s most constricting moments, my soul still wanders free because of it.
My vagabond days eventually proved their limitations, and I began to crave a place of my own. With great resistance, I exchanged my car—which brought me such freedom—for an apartment, where I acquired a rescue cat, a collection of mismatched furniture, and soon after, my husband.
I look around now at all this stuff—sofas and beds, tables and toys. I never thought I’d accumulate so much. Yet instead of weighing me down, it pleasantly anchors me. I think children need rooms and toys to call their own. As do I. And from the comfort of my couch, I now enjoy the smell of wine and wood-smoke from my own chimney. Someday I might don my backpack again and set off on another pilgrimage. Maybe I’ll even find a quiet spot in the forest to dwell for a while. But first, this house needs work and love, and as it’s filled to the brim, there is no more room for regret.

house update:
so our new contractor came yesterday and after a few minutes of looking at our disaster renovation, he called someone else to come help him. and that was just to take a look and get info to give us an estimate for fixing everything. we’re waiting on the estimate, but he was actually shocked at the shit job that was done.
he wants to remove and replace:
all of the flooring and subflooring in the house
2, possibly 3 bathrooms completely, including replacing tubs/showers, and the plumbing in the master
all of the kitchen cabinetry
he wants to probably jack up the addition because it is settling way too fast. since they squared the master bedroom door in feb, it has fallen 1/2″ out of square. the floor in the addition is about the same and breaks building code with how much is slopes. his estimate is 4-6 months of work. his estimate will include the cost of 2 pods to store all of our belongings. we will have to move.
as soon as we get his full estimate, we will talk to our lawyer. but this is where we are right now. pretty much the entire house would be ripped out and redone AGAIN completely. and we would get a brand new house, which we PAID FOR.
we will be suing them, obvs. for the cost, and legal fees, and the cost to go LIVE ELSEWHERE FOR 6 MONTHS. and for like pain and suffering. no joke. like, my kids are in public school now and a big reason for that is that i couldn’t keep up with homeschooling them when we kept have to LEAVE OUR HOUSE for weeks at a time, oh and also live in a camper for 7 months when it was only supposed to be 2. ANYWAY. i’m sure this will not be easy. but like just add it to my list of bullshit i have to deal with. yay me.

MM ANON … 28th June
Cry-sis, what Cry-sis? A past discretion could end this Tissue-thin alliance.
MM has a quandary to deal with in a very important family matter.  Family first until they get in your way is her motto!  During the flower girl dress fitting for her wedding, references to the DOCs post patron tum tum were “taken out of context” resulting in many a discarded Kleenex.  While MM promised not to tell the press (being the sole of discretion), 37 of her carrier pigeons leaked the story of how the DOC was completely unreasonable given the extensive 2 day turnaround to the wedding.  The DOC, having had doubts about the source of the leak from Day 1 is threatening to commission the royal fleecer to knit scarfs for the entire BRF 2019 Christmas loot (extended family and anyone who wants one included, worldwide courier free of charge).
Not camera shy’ talented royal exhibits soon?
HRH MM has been asked to “do” a working trip to the National Gallery on the 4th July 2019 to officially open her own very special photographic exhibition.  The exhibition will not be open to the public due to privacy concerns.  It features many filtered and photoshopped images, most of which are of people that may appear to be PH and MM hard at work in the community, but in actual fact, are people who work hard in the community for little reward.  All photography is credit of and copy write of Sussexroyal - follow them on Instagram today!
Extravagance and contempt infuriates transparency.
“Parental love is the only love that is truly selfless, unconditional and forgiving. …” © MM 1963. Submitted for copywright by someone as she was not yet an embryo.  No parent or relation was available to comment on said copyright and how it is legally possible as they have all been extravagantly paid off.
This vacuous carapace trills… “ I would he had boarded me “
Now that Archie Darren doll has been delivered, MM is hard at work securing his future.  Great plans to send him to boarding school in the vein of the BRF have not been met with fawning excitement as expected.  Numerous rejection letters have indicated that the hallowed halls of the great British schools will not accept an inanimate object that will never be able to speak.  Not to be put off, and seeing this as another chance to modernise the BRF, MM plans to home school Darren, her qualification of an (unfinished) Bachelor degree in hunting Bachelors will more than suffice.
This still hidden sea-shanty will be a pricey burial.
Being very mindful of the family that she has married into, MM has a new plan to commemorate those that have passed before her.  Her plans to give a true Viking send off to Wallis and Edward went slightly astray when the vessel to repatriate their remains in a FC pond blew a fuse, self ignited and created a 241 foot tall bonfire viewable from Wales.  PH, who is said to have control of the remote control yacht at the time said that it was the best fireworks display he had seen in a long while.  MM was not available for comment but sources suggest that she was responsible for the lubricated tones of  “what do we do with the drunken sailor” heard through Windsor at the time.
Papering over the cracks are becoming difficult.
The renovation costs at FC are spiralling out of control.  While keeping up with the rental bills for other properties actually lived in, MM wants to keep up with the Joneses.  To speed things along she has hit the ground running, taking up plastering the interior herself.  The campers on the back lawn have complained to the council about whiffy aromas, likened to old socks, emanating from the property.  What best to cover a crack MM mused, but stilton.  In an unexpected turn of events the stilton she was using contained not maggots but wood worm and the renovation costs were quadrupled.  A small discount was offered by the newly contracted tradespeople in return for cheese on crackers at all elevenses for the duration of the 19 year project.
Wolves quietly prepare the abacus.
MM is patron of the National Theatre didn’t you know.  After the adoring boos of her last appearance it is now time to step it up a notch and provide real value for money in return for the patronage.  May we present a national event that will turn the air blue “ABBA-cuss ©”.  A singing and dancing extravaganza personally written, directed, produced by and starring only MM.  The musical will include hits such as “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” ” & “Money, Money, Money” with  not safe for work overtones applied to the lyrics.  Dependent on whether LG will give her her passport back, the show will go on the road to Africa soon.
How wonderful!  We definitely needs laughs…this is amazing!  Thank you so very much!  So appreciate you doing this for us!😁❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
MM ANON … dear LH … I love reading your witty interpretations … I’m in fits of laughter with your clever humour …… carry on , much love. Laughing is the sunlight of the spirit 🤣🤣🤣
